Thanks for the Wessex review I also bought a double from them and I'm really enjoying it. I have started up re-learning the horn at 68 after being away from it since Jr High School 53 years ago.
Your son is lucky, I have been playing for 3/4 years with a used horn of bad brand and quality ... and I hope to have a new one even if I don't think my parents will give it to me.
Dude, being an 8th grader and playing French horn in my band, you are one hell of an inspiration. Your videos keep me playing even when I don’t want to. Keep up your work man, you are doing amazing. Love your work!
Can you give us an update after a few months or so if you notice any problems? That price is awesome but I'm a little concerned where they managed to find places to cut costs. Awesome video
All of there other types of instruments have nothing but positive feedback and they put that same care into the french horns. I will definitely update you in a few months. It does not feel cheap in any way as I thought it would. It feels like a solid horn all round and plays really smoothly.
Im a trombone player who has always been fascinated with the horn and have wanted to learn it ever since i heard its sound. I have no french horn knowlegde or know anyone that plays it so ive always been skeptical on where to buy one. Considering maybe buying this one
sage ana i also have a singe horn, but i want a double. The trigger on a double horn makes it easier to play high, but since i have a single horn, the high register is quite difficult.
Stumbled onto this, I inherited a Martin Handcraft FIVE valve French Horn, all 5 fingers on your left hand have a key. My Dad told me he bought it when he was in high school in the 1930's, he played in University orchestras when he was still in high school and went to OU on a music scholarship. I played that horn through high school and college, a looong time ago. Every time the marching band went to a parade every one of my various band directors would take me around to show that horn off to them, none of them had ever seen a 5 valve French Horn before.
I have a Holton - H178 and I had a chance to play one of these horns. I instantly fell in love with the horn, but they've been sold out forever. I can seem to get my hands on one, so im probably going to call them some time, but when I checked the horn wasn't $895 it was $1,195, still great, just wish it was $895.
For a student that might have a better horn, or a school supplied better horn, it can be handy to get a low cost horn to keep at home for home practice. You leave the better horn at the school. So you never have to lug a horn back and forth to school. (And it also solves the problem of forgetting your horn or leaving it somewhere.)
I hadnt seen this video and i was wondering what horn you were using when i saw you this weekend at the journée du cor. It was great seeing you there! Good luck in your studying.
I know it's while after this was posted, but I just stumbled upon this video and horn is absolutely perfect for me. I was very upset to find that Wessex stopped making them, and I can't even find a used one.
This helps a ton! My family and I were just looking at horns before I came across your channel. All of them are way to expensive. I am preparing a solo, Nocturno, (I belive you played a bit of it in this) For my school, and I have a really cruddy horn. Thanks so much for this!
Thanks for the review. I ordered one today at a little over $1,000 ... with delivery for March 2020! Yes ... they are STILL on back order. I haven't played horn (first chair university orchestra) since 1979. I'm going to re-learn to play. I always loved french horn ... and regretted that I stopped playing (due to the high cost of owning a good horn).
This looks like a really good offer for pricing for such a good horn. Unfortunately it’s usually very high cost for high quality horn which makes sense. I’m a trumpet player looking into a professional horn to start playing for college and I really would like to learn but would probably be using a school horn in the meantime. Hopefully they would be able to update on when the horns will be back in stock. Does this horn compare greatly to other professional ones you may have tried? Sorry for my lack of knowledge I’m trying to learn about this instrument.
Bought one as result of this video. Price is now $900.00 and they now offer a detachable bell for $995. I also love it. It's everything you claim it to be!
Based on your review I decided to get one for my school program (as well as one of their student tubas). I hope to be able to recommend these to my elementary and middle school students. Having one on hand will help! Thanks for your review!
I wanted one of these but your one of the only people talking about it and it sold out so I'm switching to a Yamaha 671d once the music store gets them back in stock
I’d love to get one but they have been sold out for a while😢 would you mind reviewing the Thomann French horn, some of them are a bit cheaper as well so I’d like to know how they compare
I have a euphonium from Wessex, which I loooove. Prior to the purchase, I heard a LOT of good regarding playability and some bad regarding cosmetic longevity (they have to be babied a bit as the finish wears off faster and some older versions dented easily) , but all things considered, the pros far outweigh the cons at this point in my life. I can't justify dropping thousands at my level but I'm also frustrated with the limitations and ergonomics of a student horn. Even if it turns into a horror story where the instrument falls apart after only 2 years, I still spent less money than I would have by renting a less satisfying instrument for the same amount of time. I honestly can't see a single downside in all of this. The only thing I didn't like was the stock mouthpiece (felt too big on my face), but that's my preference. I've been curious about the F horns and I've had my eye on them just to have one in the house to dabble on, but I haven't heard nearly as much about them.
I'm student playing French Horn and let me tell you. I've been told that I've got a great sound but you sound magnificent. Thanks for the inspiration to practice. It means alot to know that I've got a long road ahead of me. I'll get there though, in Time.
SwaggyJay | Quite a few of their products are sold out, like all of their saxophones and some other products here and there. They need to restock some of their items because I would like to have one of their double horns but they’re sold out. I’ll live though.
Looking at their site, I don't see the same engraving on the valve caps and keys. Is wessex-tubas.com/collections/horns/products/bb-f-double-french-horn-fh601 the same that you got? If so are these custom because you were in contact with the sellers?
+Martin Anderson you're right the valve caps do look slightly different. They are not anything special for me as I get exactly what normal customers would. The horn I got is the newest version So i think that is what happened. The newest version has the valve caps I got and the site picture is just missing that one detail
I was wondering if you still have the horn if you could give an update on how you liked it and how it holds up after the amount of time it' been. Or if you no longer have it, any reasons that you no longer have it. I'm looking to get a horn, but my budget isn't huge. Thanks!
Hey Patrick. I was wondering if you could share you view of hans hoyer horns. Could you tell me what you know about them and the quality. I’m considering buying the G10. Thanks!
Kaleb Williams I've never played one. All I know is when people buy them... They sell them in a couple of years to get something better as they end up not liking it. They're very heavy horns that don't match the tone of other horns well.
Got one for my elementary school. The little 5th grader loves it. I want to get it in tune with itself so do you have any suggestions of approximate amounts to pull each tuning slide like Conn-Selmer has for the Conn 6D? Thanks!
Unfortunately without having the horn in front of me I couldn’t tell you. Each horn is so different (same with conns Yamaha etc.) I’m glad they love it!!
At the beginning of the school year I broke 5 French horn strings each on a different one. I almost needed to use a single horn because all the doubles were being fixed.
Hi Patrick, after this time how is the Wessex holding up quality wise? Would you still recommend it as a good used alternative to a 567 or 6D? Cheers Isaac
Patrick, How is this horn working for you 3.5 years since you posted this. Do you still like it. Has anything broken? It sounded great in the video. Thank you!
I ordered the horn, should be coming in soon. I’m so excited to have my first horn that is affordable. I bought this for 1,195. It’s so crazy how this horn goes out of stock so fast. I’m excited to try it out. I’ll let you guys know soon how I feel about it.
Circular breathing is more common for woodwinds for continuous breathing. It is difficult for brass instruments because continuous breathing involves using the cheeks. This continues pushing air while breathing in at the same time which is not a technique used for brass instruments.
Patrick and anyone else who bought this horn - how's the horn holding up a year later? I'm ready to pull the trigger for my Freshman as he's using a very beat up middle school horn. Would like it to last through high school!!!
Hey patrick. Can you tell me what mouthpiece u use? I `ve play 8 years trombone in our orchester now i swiched to horn. I tried some mouthpieces but its real hard for me to play. And after 20min playing it is over. Can`t play anymore. Have you some tipps and tricks for me?
+Opperer271 no matter what mouthpiece you use, you will have to build up a horn embouchure as the French horn requires totally different muscles than the tbone. So it will take time. I'd recommend a wider rim mouthpiece as my trombone players who also play horn use that kind of spec. The trick with mouthpieces is just to try a lot until you find one that is perfect for you. What works for me night not work for you.
I’ve only had terrible experiences with 567’s so my opinion may be biased. It’s better than the 567 and I’m not sure about the bell. You can check on the site.
Do you still think this is a good horn? Have 6th gradr student. Been playing for 1 and a half years. School provided horns are terrible. Not many options in area to rent.
Hey Patrick, I was wondering if you are doing anymore horn giveaways in the near future. I am using an old school horns that has dents galore. Just wondering.
Hey Gibson, the first hard giveaway I paid for myself and ended up spending over $1k total. As much as I would love to give away horns to everyone, I cannot afford to do this frequently so the next one might be a year away if there even is one. I would not hold your breath on me for another giveaway in the near future.
Unfortunately I've never been to australia let alone had anything shipper there. They ship from UK and I'm in Canada and it took 1 day from when they shipped it to when I got it at my front door if that is helpful in any way.
FhornPatrick being new to horns. Is this being b/f different than a 179. Is the 179 f/b? If so how does that change things. Btw love your videos. Oh and link to this horn was broken. I found the site and they are sold out of them.
hey fHornPatrick or anyone here is a pro horn player, id like some help. im having trouble slurring from middle C to pedal C. i had to change embouchure to just play that low note very strong and clear, but never could i slur from mid to low, or low to mid.
Fire Gun nope. Some notes sound disgusting in the Bb side. A double horn means everyone has a better chance of being in tune. It does not give anyone superpowers
I might switch to the horn (Right now I play the flute). If I do switch what would y'all recommend? A single horn (F or Bflat) or a double horn? Im in 8th grade right now and I'm going to highschool next year. So, if I do switch to the horn, I just want a horn that's good for a beginner. :)
Jose Padilla just start on a double. That’s what I did in 6th grade and although the horn is a difficult instrument to learn, I’m glad I did that instead of starting on a single horn and having to learn a new set of fingerings
Ericles Rodrigo on their website I think it mentions they at least used to be manufactured in China but they may be in the UK now and the US (not sure) but if you read on the website they mention they go through professional testing or something and it seems really good. (Coming from a non horn player so take that for what it may be :/)
This isn't a horn related question because I am trombone. (Don't hate people) but do you think there trombones will be as well made as this french horn because I have been thinking about buying a piccolo trombone and a valve(hope I spelled that right) trombone but I don't wanna spend money on a bad instrument. Thanks in advance for an answer.
+FhornPatrick especially if it's a piccolo trombone. From my experience even the most expensive piccolo trombone sounds funny. But that's just how they sound.
FhornPatrick Oh ok cool. Thanks for the response I will get them both as soon as I get the money for them. Its not like I need either instrument so its not like oh I need to get this ASAP I just want more trombones. I wanna become a better musician maybe learn other instruments. I look up to you for horn and look up to Joe alessi for trombone. That is probably all I will try to learn for now. Anyway thanks again for the response
first
FhornPatrick I am a beginning band and a French horn player (school owned)
FhornPatrick :v gift me one pls it's awesome
FhornPatrick WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET MORE LIVESTREAMS???
FhornPatrick From one horn player to the other how do you play higher notes??
Hey would recommend this to person going into college?
Thanks for the Wessex review I also bought a double from them and I'm really enjoying it. I have started up re-learning the horn at 68 after being away from it since Jr High School 53 years ago.
I just placed my order! After playing on school horns for the past two years, my boy is going to be happy to have a horn of his own!
Of course! You'll be soing the progression of this horn :)
FhornPatrick great, weighing options for college right now, and this looks really amazing if it's a solid as it seems!
All of there other types of instruments have nothing but positive feedback and they put that same care into the french horns. I will definitely update you in a few months. It does not feel cheap in any way as I thought it would. It feels like a solid horn all round and plays really smoothly.
Awesome! Thanks so much for showing this off!
No problem :)
Im a trombone player who has always been fascinated with the horn and have wanted to learn it ever since i heard its sound. I have no french horn knowlegde or know anyone that plays it so ive always been skeptical on where to buy one. Considering maybe buying this one
Did you end up buying this horn? If so, thoughts? I’m also on the market for a decent quality horn under $2000
I really want a double horn but I have a single.😕
sage ana i also have a singe horn, but i want a double. The trigger on a double horn makes it easier to play high, but since i have a single horn, the high register is quite difficult.
Just get it a date

You should do a give away with that horn!!!
could you do a few covers on it? maybe one fun pop tune, and one practical piece played in a concert setting?
I have a Holton - H178 and I had a chance to play one of these horns. I instantly fell in love with the horn, but they've been sold out forever. You should try piccolo French horn
I'd be interested to see the Wessex triple horn - any chance you can do a review on it?
I'm currently borrowing an old conn 6d, will look into this
Great!! Enjoy it Martin
I have a school 6D, not a big fan. Do you like the one you have?
Will this become your main horn or are you still going to using your Alex?
+Brandt Conley i sold the Alex three horns ago.
I hadnt seen this video and i was wondering what horn you were using when i saw you this weekend at the journée du cor. It was great seeing you there! Good luck in your studying.
Whats making that noise
Autofocus on the camera.
Jonathan R. Oh ok thanks!!!
Finally someone who noticed
I know it's while after this was posted, but I just stumbled upon this video and horn is absolutely perfect for me. I was very upset to find that Wessex stopped making them, and I can't even find a used one.
Im just getting back into playing my Horn after 10 Years, and this was beyond helpful! Thank you so much!
It's $1095 now. Still a good deal, but bummer it's over $1000 now
This helps a ton! My family and I were just looking at horns before I came across your channel. All of them are way to expensive. I am preparing a solo, Nocturno, (I belive you played a bit of it in this) For my school, and I have a really cruddy horn. Thanks so much for this!
Wondering how Wessex compares with Mack Brass . I love the tone quality you produce on this one!
Thanks for the review. I ordered one today at a little over $1,000 ... with delivery for March 2020! Yes ... they are STILL on back order. Martin Schwartz how has it held up?
Ahh! Wessex was my next guess after Mack brass!
Congrats on the endorsement! You're sounding great man!
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who flings my horn all over the place with one hand. Never dropped it. Prob never will!!
@Fhornpatrick, is this an F/Bb horn with an american valve-system?
Based on your review I decided to get one for my school program (as well as one of their student tubas). I hope to be able to recommend these to my elementary and middle school students. Having one on hand will help! Thanks for your review!
How is the horn holding up, especially with students?
I wanted one of these but your one of the only people talking about it and it sold out so I'm switching to a Yamaha 671d once the music store gets them back in stock
I’d love to get one but they have been sold out for a while😢 would you mind reviewing the Thomann French horn, some of them are a bit cheaper as well so I’d like to know how they compare
Is the low side F? You said "Bb - F", and that made me think it might be a descant horn, which I would love to have.
4:08 i‘’m playing that piece.! Nocturno is an amazing solo. I might play it for my solo and ensemble.
(miDdLe sChoOlEr)
Hey just wana say thank you so much, your the reason I got into playing horn and I really love it!
Woop woop!! I'm glad you love it!
Patrick-Did you get an assigned a discount code to give to your peeps to buy the Wessex horns?
I have a euphonium from Wessex, which I loooove. I hope you find a horn that works for you :)
I went to the website and the price was a 1000 euros. Has it gone up or am I missing something?
Riina Reismaa it may be different due to import fees, taxes etc per country.
Probably :(
I'm student playing French Horn and let me tell you. I've been told that I've got a great sound but you sound magnificent. Thanks for the inspiration to practice. It means alot to know that I've got a long road ahead of me. I'll get there though, in Time.
I want one so bad but they're all sold out *insert sad face here*
SwaggyJay | Quite a few of their products are sold out, like all of their saxophones and some other products here and there. They need to restock some of their items because I would like to have one of their double horns but they’re sold out. I’ll live though.
They’ve been sold out every time I check
Looking at their site, I don't see the same engraving on the valve caps and keys. Is wessex-tubas.com/collections/horns/products/bb-f-double-french-horn-fh601 the same that you got? If so are these custom because you were in contact with the sellers?

Ok. That makes sense. Thanks!
Is it possible to get it without the dragon design?? I'm just not a fan of it.
I don't think so.
FhornPatrick poop
Make sure to hold your trigger/keys when emptying those slides! The suction can cause some damage over time 🙏💜
Duuuude, I just got mine after getting rid of my Andreas Eastman and I LOVE IT.
I was wondering if you still have the horn if you could give an update on how you liked it and how it holds up after the amount of time it' been. Or if you no longer have it, any reasons that you no longer have it. I'm looking to get a horn, but my budget isn't huge. Thanks!
The price went up a bit but would you recommend the removable bell or non removable bell?
For anyone still wondering in 2024, It is at $1,270.00 now.
When he started playing Nocturno by Franz Strauss😏
(great piece btw, it’s my favorite horn solo that I’ve learned so far)
hows the horn now after 4 years? Did you return it, or do you still have it today? If so hows its condition? Thinking of buying this horn
I don't know how to play horn YET but this WILL come in handy, thanks for showing this off.
Also where are you, is that your classroom?? Ha ha
the link doesn't work anymore. are these horns still available and what's the name of the horn?
Hey so I’m looking to buy all the sheet music off your store so how many pieces is that?
i got a super old kruspe horn which still has a better sound than most of the new 5000$ horns
I would love to buy one of these horns, but I have not been able to find much info. How would you compare this to an old dented holton 179?
You have changed my life! Thanks for this!
I have an older Yamaha double horn is do you think for a beginner this is better?
Got one for my elementary school. The little 5th grader loves it. I want to get it in tune with itself so do you have any suggestions of approximate amounts to pull each tuning slide like Conn-Selmer has for the Conn 6D? Thanks!
Unfortunately without having the horn in front of me I couldn’t tell you. Each horn is so different (same with conns Yamaha etc.) I’m glad they love it!!
So I just ran across your video. Do you still love this French Horn?
could you maybe make a video sometime talking about the books you have listed in your description?
Good idea!
At the beginning of the school year I broke 5 French horn strings each on a different one. I almost needed to use a single horn because all the doubles were being fixed.
Could you pleeeeease pleeeeeeease put the sheet music for some of your older music like "Skyrim Quintet" and "Star Wars Sextet"???
Wow,pretty shine and bright sound!where can buy this horn?
wessex-tubas.com
thank you
This horn is absolutely beautiful!
Hi Patrick, after this time how is the Wessex holding up quality wise? Would you still recommend it as a good used alternative to a 567 or 6D? Cheers Isaac
Doesn't seem like this guy responds. Wondering the same thing!
I'm buying one today, thanks for the great review.. I will let you know what I think when I get it!!
Great video! Do you have any tips for beginner hornists?
This is definitely something I'll look into!
I’ll let you guys know soon how I feel about it.
how is your experience on it so far? Ive been considering buying this horn, but havent been sure because of all the negative feedback online.
How has it worked out for you? Considering it for my kiddo
Do you think you can go over how to circular breath?
Nope, never done it or needed it.
Circular breathing is more common for woodwinds for continuous breathing. It is difficult for brass instruments because continuous breathing involves using the cheeks. This continues pushing air while breathing in at the same time which is not a technique used for brass instruments.
Oh ok, thanks for the info.
Is it so hard to mute the music when you are trying to play the horn??
Patrick and anyone else who bought this horn - how's the horn holding up a year later? I'm ready to pull the trigger for my Freshman as he's using a very beat up middle school horn. Would like it to last through high school!!!
Not factoring cost, which French Horn would you recommend? And then factoring cost
more strauss solos please.
May I know what app u use to loop your music?
Hey patrick.
Can you tell me what mouthpiece u use?
I `ve play 8 years trombone in our orchester now i swiched to horn.
I tried some mouthpieces but its real hard for me to play. And after 20min playing it is over. Can`t play anymore.
Have you some tipps and tricks for me?
+Opperer271 no matter what mouthpiece you use, you will have to build up a horn embouchure as the French horn requires totally different muscles than the tbone. So it will take time. What works for me night not work for you.
I'm still super skeptical. Is it better than the Yamaha 567 and does it come in a screw bell model?
I’ve only had terrible experiences with 567’s so my opinion may be biased. It’s better than the 567 and I’m not sure about the bell. You can check on the site.
What’s not mentioned, which is important for the skeptics, is that you get a 14 day trial period AND a 3 year warranty against manufacturers defects.
Do you still think this is a good horn? Have 6th gradr student. Been playing for 1 and a half years. School provided horns are terrible. Not many options in area to rent.
Hey Patrick,
I was wondering if you are doing anymore horn giveaways in the near future.
Haven't taught in a middle school while teaching that did not have Farkas brand.
Hola! Tambien toco el corno francés quisiera que hicieras un video en español saludos desde colombia!!!
what's the name of the program you use to loop?
Can you please do a video on mouthpieces you recommend?
+Anderson Tsai already have!
Definetly lookin into this!!! Thank you so much!
Let me know if you end up getting one!
Definetly. However my only concern is international shipping such as to australia. Any helpful tips?
Unfortunately I've never been to australia let alone had anything shipper there. They ship from UK and I'm in Canada and it took 1 day from when they shipped it to when I got it at my front door if that is helpful in any way.
oh ok cool. Yeah i was just wondering if they do ship worldwide! Thanks for the all the help.
How would you compare this to a H179? Just curious as to your thoughts. I found a used 179 for 1300.00 US
Depending on condition, h179 would be a little better quality. But it all depends on the condition and what your budget is
FhornPatrick being new to horns. Is this being b/f different than a 179. Is the 179 f/b? If so how does that change things. Btw love your videos. Oh and link to this horn was broken. I found the site and they are sold out of them.

It is true that (with a double horn) you can play every note with trigger?
Fire Gun nope. Some notes sound disgusting in the Bb side. A double horn means everyone has a better chance of being in tune. It does not give anyone superpowers
The sound that’s coming out was like fucking my ears!!! Fuck! It sound sooo good!!
Would you recommend a Mack Brass horn?
I might switch to the horn (Right now I play the flute). If I do switch what would y'all recommend? A single horn (F or Bflat) or a double horn? Im in 8th grade right now and I'm going to highschool next year. So, if I do switch to the horn, I just want a horn that's good for a beginner. :)
double horn is best
(f)
Quake so you would reccommend the f horn?
Jose Padilla just start on a double. That’s what I did in 6th grade and although the horn is a difficult instrument to learn, I’m glad I did that instead of starting on a single horn and having to learn a new set of fingerings
Ellie Cook Thanks!
Oh~! Is it available now?
Hello! Is this Horn Manufactured in the USA or China?
+Nelson Moreno all of their instruments have the same build quality. So if you want to try it out then ya go for it!
Dude, I need a finger strap thingy
