Thanks for watching this Beginner French Horn video and learning 5 notes with me! If you have any questions or video suggestions just let me know in the comments below! : )
@@xmoney-pb5uo Keep going! The key is practice. Use a tuner if you have one to check that you're playing the right notes. If you're consistently finding that you pitch too low, you might be better suited to a slightly higher instrument like the tenor horn or flugal horn.
ive played the trumpet for about 6 years now how similar is the fingerings between trumpet and french horn?because im looking to learn the french horn and i heard its similar to the trumpet.
Picasso Gaming I also came over to horn from trumpet. The fingerings are basically the same, but begin at different points within the scale...which is to be expected because the horn is pitched in a different key than trumpet. I’m still in the process of relearning the horn as it’s been a long time since I played horn. Normally played trumpet and soprano bugle...
Is french horn really THAT hard? Don’t misunderstand me, I don’t play the french horn (yet) but I heard that it was difficult…but I really didn’t expect it to be that hard
Last year in 5th grade, my band conductor told me that I could play the French horn since I was a natural high player. I was struggling so much until I finally found this channel. Now I’m in the beginner band playing the French horn so good my band conductor recommended honors band. Tysm!
I'm a complete beginner and I just transferred to French horn from trumpet. I'm currently trying to learn how to play over Christmas break without my instructor so I can hopefully be caught up to the rest of the band when school starts up again. Any tips? Thank you, you're videos are super helpful!
Glad you're enjoying them! Do lots of long tones and playing a note, then lifting your lips on and off the mouthpiece. That way it will train your lips to find the right 'place' faster. If you know what I mean :) Flexibility and time practising everyday is a must :)
@@TheBrassTeacher Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! You're videos have really helped me out, too! I'm really glad I found you, I will definitely recommend to some friends who are learning as well!
I suggest trying it get you high F and low F as in you switch between high and low this will help with future notes (also highly suggest get a double French horn soooooo much easier to play)
@@Oliver-qe5uq thanks for the advice! I've been playing french horn for close to a year now and I really really enjoy it! Your advice is definitely fantastic and I'll give it a try!
I switched from the trumpet to the French horn and I've been struggling for a while now and this video helped a lot! I've been so very confused on the papers for our notes and this video solved most of those problems!
I'm a trombonist/violinist and I've always been curious about french horn but upon hearing it, it doesn't sound so much different up close, probably in a closed area but like violin, it sounds so violiny when heard from afar. I've always expected french horn to be less brassy and more of a light and airy horn sound like a cave man horn sound made from animal's horn or a spiral seashell.
my son and I enjoy your instruction as he learns to play the french horn. We'd love to see more videos if you still post content online! greetings from across the pond!
Wow! That's so great to hear! I'm so glad you enjoy the videos! I have been back living in Thailand for over a year now without my horn but I'm working on it!
Thank you for making this video: I have clear the Bb side finally!!! However, the F side is confusing for me. I thought that in an F horn open was C but apparently is E and G as well. And I thought that 1st valve in F side was D but apparently is F as well. But I’m grateful that Bb side is finally clear to me. Thank you so much.
I think I see the problem. The French horn is a transposing instrument, a C on an F horn will come out as F. When she plays CDEFG, that will sound FGABbC on the piano.
@@mattfenner9457 Goodness! Is that right? I had no idea the French Horn was a transposing instrument! Since French horns commonly stand in F or Bflat (not to mention some that stand in G) and, moreover, double horns in F AND Bflat are increasingly common and presumably all must make do with ONE written/printed score I have always inferred that the French Horn MUST be a non-transposing instrument requiring the player to learn to relate his/her personal choice of model to the standard printed/written music.
John Pereira If you were the one that posted the question, I would concede that there is a different reason to the one I suggested. The comment meant to help absolute beginners. Your sarcasm is unnecessary.
@@mattfenner9457 Sarcasm? What sarcasm? None intended. I simply acknowledged that this info' is new to me. I hope @The Brass Teacher will explain how the needs of players of different models (and different modes of the same model) are met by the convention.
Good, and the presenter is very enthusiastic. But I wish there were some graphics to go with this lesson, showing the location of the notes on sheet music as well as the corresponding pictures of what tabs should be open/depressed. Also, that the two registers (F and B-flat) should be in separate sections. From an educational psychology perspective, that would be most effective.
Write them down from highest to lowest, every day, until you can remember them. Then I would attempt to start with 2nd line G as your first note (starts you off with a slightly wider range) I always did one warmup that goes like this G, F, C, F, G (hold down first valve) F#, Eb, B, Eb, F# (Hold down second) F, D, Bb, D, F (Hold down first) Then it would keep going down until you couldn't go anymore.
so i’ve been playing trombone for 6 years and i wanna learn to play french horn. what horn should i buy? idk what key or if i should get a single or double? i’ve looked at different ones but i don’t know what one will be the best for me. i will mostly use it for fun and for any ensembles that i could play in when there’s not a need for multiple trombones. what do you recommend?
It depends on a few things - how much money do you have to spend and what level you are playing at. At a professional level a double horn is a must for the flexibility and fuller tone it creates. If its just for fun and playing at a local level, I would plump for a single as they are cheaper.
That sounds like it may be the problem although it depends on the instrument. If it is for F horn then I would suggest getting a mouthpiece with a wider rim. This worked for me. There are 2 things you can change with a detachable rim mouthpiece - the depth and width. See if you can have a try on multiple mouthpieces in your local shop.
work up to it :) Begin your practice with long tones and work your way up slowly. The main thing is not to strain or press the mouthpiece too heavily on your lips :)
hello there... I have a question... do I have to slide down a bit my horn (front valves)? because I watched a video saying that it has to be slide half inch.... tnx for your response...
I'm not quite sure what you mean about which part sliding down? If you mean your tuning slides, then that depends on the horn. You can use a piano or electric tuner to get your horn in tune
I am a percussionist switching over to french horn and I have no idea on how brass instuments are able to play certain notes without pressing any keys Someone help me understand 😅

yes oh my god same
french horn is so hard to learn because I play trumpet too so I sometimes play too high, and I found this very helpful too so thank you !

Great suggestion! I will bear that in mind if I go back to creating videos! Thanks for watching
I'm starting the french horn soon, are you you using a double horn or a single horn?
If it has a trigger it’s a double horn so yes
That's right!
So I recently just switched from flute to the French Horn. Do you have any tips for remembering the notes?
I wanted to play flute but my friendime got it first
I would start on the F side as there are less valves to press down in the beginning. Other than that - repetition & lots of patience :)
Write them down from highest to lowest, every day, until you can remember them. Then I would attempt to start with 2nd line G as your first note (starts you off with a slightly wider range) I always did one warmup that goes like this
G, F, C, F, G (hold down first valve)
F#, Eb, B, Eb, F# (Hold down second)
F, D, Bb, D, F (Hold down first)
Then it would keep going down until you couldn't go anymore.
That’s a good switch, using more air

I suggest you start out with single as it is cheaper but it’s also harder to play higher notes so Having a double helps but you choose
how do you know when to use the f or Bb side?

what app you using for tuning ??😢
My mouthpiece is really small and often when im playing my mouth is sliding off of the mouthpiece, would a slightly larger mouthpiece improve this?

how do you switch from f to Bb i don't play the horn but i find it very interesting.
You use a trigger on double french horns
