I will forever defend Dave Batista as the best wrestler turned actor. The man has range! But John Cena has been able to turn around and become a very close second. I’m glad we can all agree that the rock is getting lazy
i guess getting lazy ist the right term. cos in the beginning of his career he showed his (comedic) talent. I LOVE his performance in "Be Cool" for example. but getting bigger and bigger roles he decided to play the same and same persona again and again. probably for his big paycheck. I really would like to see him in a decent role or in real (not just physical) comedy.
I think Cena said it best himself in a Savannah Banana video, "we're all in the entertainment business." So he clearly knows his strengths and weaknesses but ultimately does one thing constantly and that's entertain audiences in the ring, on the screen or on Banana League diamond striking out.
I've been watching John Cena on WWE since I was a kid, and I already had a feeling that he was gonna be a movie actor. The only question was when it would happen. The best part about him is that he has a surprisingly quick mind. He's very aware of the moment, and he'll answer every question with confidence, no matter how random.
Pre-2010 rock actually showed potential. his role in walking tall and gridiron gang gave him layered characters that he played pretty well. but then he sold post-2010 lol
The thing about Cena that is interesting is that he is a student of transition, and it seems he learned the lesson well. He took a VERY 90's-style path into fame: start in low- and mid-budget action -> score some work as a punchline in some full-strength comedies -> supporting roles in RomComs, usually the handsome new boyfriend to be overthrown, or some superhuman competitive suitor -> comedic relief with dramatic parts in something GrimDark, usually a horror film or an arthouse piece from Cannes or SXSW -> ensemble lead in a B-movie, adult-oriented genre film -> breakout lead in an auteur-driven passion project, usually some kind of Oscar Bait needing lateral stunt-casting to stand out -> Stop typecasting into Action and only do action movies that support their artistic body of work, not their bankroll The path was invented by Arnold, and just about every Hollywood muscle-god has either tried following the path and failed, or failed because they DIDN'T take the path; the Rock included (he just can't get a dramatic breakout that doesn't default into some kind of action premise.)
After seeing Pain and Gain I'm reminded how much acting potential Dwayne had before his ego got worse. I'm glad to see that John Cena and Dave Batista didn't go down that path and improved upon their craft.

He’s freaking funny, I remember his cameos as himself and then his transition to actual acting I was confused but impressed. “You can’t see me” was a joke for middle school back in the early 2010’s lol
Rock tried to get out of his comfort zone with films like Be Cool, Southland Tales, and The Gameplan. Then, he just decided one day to get super jacked and get this money, and that he did.
I agree. I followed none percent of his wrestling career. But I will go see a movie or show just because he's in it. I have fun when he's acting. People forget that sometimes you can go see, and wholly enjoy a movie because it was just fun for you. Not everything has to be a masterpiece to be exactly what we need it to be. Not every performance needs to be Oscar worthy. I will note that Bautista is a solid second place for me. Not only have I enjoyed Drax.......but he has shown some chops in Bladerunner and Dune.
I love how you highlighted Kevin Nash! He may not be a leading man or get many roles with more than a minute or two of screen time BUT... Kevin Nash's role, somehow, seem a lot more dignified than most of the roles wrestlers find themselves playing
I like how you just breezed over The Marine, a movie with witty comedy, but Cena plays the character very seriously and straight man That was the very first film I saw with him and I saw he can act, I didn’t even know who he was at the time and he still impressed me
I think the elusion to Dave Bautista being one of the “other normal” wrestlers turned actors is inaccurate because Dave has made it his mission to stop being typecast as the big dude, and hes been very successful in that mission. Sure to a mainstream audience, being the dumb muscle in Marvel movies didnt do him any favors but he even had some very good deep emotional stuff going on screen, his roles in Blade Runner: 2049 and Dune also help his mission.
Also if you watch interviews with him, he is genuinely a hilarious person just in general. The way he talks and his capacity to add jokes and deadpan humor into ordinary proceedings is honestly unparalelled.
I feel like this video is unfairly down on Dave Bautista. He's actually shown some superb range outside of Drax. His turn in the short prequel for BR2049 was outstanding. Recognise!
Is it just me or did the video weirdly gloss over & ignore Bautista? It even went as far as to show his picture while seemingly actively not saying his name, just referring to him as “other actors”. Felt strange.
So, because a lot of people are mentioning Dave Bautista here. I think its from Maven's own youtube channel. Maven said when Dave was 'popping off' in his very first run with Evoloution (Dave, HHH, Orton and Ric), there was a WWE party. And one of the female wrestlers (I think Stacy as he mentioned) husband/BF was a hollywood actor - and for most of the night Dave did was talk to him. And after that he was already going to acting school part-time when he was not on the road. Even John said he him self went to acting school for a long while. Peacemaker is the show that solidified him as a proper actor by getting a complex role. Both of these men committed worked hard, did the grind from the bottom. Its why they are doing so well today.
John Cena works so well in my opinion because he doesnt take himself so goddamn seriously like The Rock does Hes ok with weird or goofy roles, he always brings the "im here to have fun and do my best" energy to his roles in a way thats appealing, and when offered a role with serious moments he doesnt hold back, and often gives amazing performances Peacemaker was definitely a highlight and he doesnt just play himself, he actually acts
I agree with a lot of the things this video says about John Cena. I actually think he's pretty funny. But the way they ignored the work Dave Batista has been doing is outrageous. He has done a lot and you can tell Batista is truly trying to be a great actor.
I like Cena a lot, he was incredible in Peacemaker, especially the moment on the piano. But the video seems to reference Dave Batista negatively, which feels unfair given his brilliant cameo in Blade Runner 2049 and some solid action performances in Guardians and Spectre.
I would argue that Dave Bautista has demonstrated greater range in his acting career and is better than Cena. He's spectacular in Blade Runner 2049 and Glass Onion and shows off some pretty impressive acting chops in both. Same with Knock at the Cabin and Guardians in many ways. Both he and Cena have done great things for themselves.
I think it’s unfair to lump Bautista in with one note actors. Look at his most recent performances, his roles in Dune, Boy and the Heron, GOTG3, Knock at the Cabin and Glass Onion were very different
John Cena and Dave Batista are one of the best wrestlers turned actors. Dawyne just plays himself in almost everything

Batista is doing what he can to move off that action movie stereotype, he clearly cares about the craft and wants to do more. I respect that
One of the underrated wrestlers acting example is Adam Copeland in the new Percy Jackson series on Disney+
I can't believe you bashed "Daddy's home"(1 and 2)
Such a good family comedy, with something for every member no matter the age.
Y’all did Dave Batista dirty with this one
I like how you just breezed over The Marine, a movie with witty comedy, but Cena plays the character very seriously and straight man
That was the very first film I saw with him and I saw he can act, I didn’t even know who he was at the time and he still impressed me
yikes 😂
Damn, I actually like the Daddy's Home movies, especially as a fan of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg!
And Edge killed it in Vikings.
"Why Nobody Saw John Cena's Acting Career Coming" cause you cant see him
Dave Bautista is a much better wrestler-turned-actor than John Cena
So is cena
@@simenzewedlamini360 Bautista and Cena are better than The Rock.
I like the pun in the title 😂
thank god I'm not the only one who thought that
Also if you watch interviews with him, he is genuinely a hilarious person just in general. The way he talks and his capacity to add jokes and deadpan humor into ordinary proceedings is honestly unparalelled.
Cenas movie theater scene is one of my favorte scenes ever. Its so funny😂
And John is just a genuinely good dude. He is always happy to talk to a fan, just as long has you’re respectful.
Bautista is the real goat 🐐
The deceptions joke gets me every time
I feel like this video is unfairly down on Dave Bautista. He's actually shown some superb range outside of Drax. His turn in the short prequel for BR2049 was outstanding. Recognise!
Trainwreck being naked, when he didn't have to totally hilarious, and Blockers super hilarious. Peacemaker tv series sad and understandable.
It is so strange to hear the “and his name is JOHN CENA” followed by generic horn music #37 rather than My Time Is Now.
John Cena out there bing chilling his way in hollywood
John Cena works so well in my opinion because he doesnt take himself so goddamn seriously like The Rock does
Hes ok with weird or goofy roles, he always brings the "im here to have fun and do my best" energy to his roles in a way thats appealing, and when offered a role with serious moments he doesnt hold back, and often gives amazing performances
Peacemaker was definitely a highlight
and he doesnt just play himself, he actually acts
you must be young. The Rock has movies in his early acting career that blow cena’s out the water
Love how all the comments are mentioned Bautista. Feel like Nerdstalgic might’ve overlooked him.
I agree with a lot of the things this video says about John Cena. I actually think he's pretty funny. But the way they ignored the work Dave Batista has been doing is outrageous. He has done a lot and you can tell Batista is truly trying to be a great actor.
Daddy’s Home is funny bro reLAX.
The Daddys Home duology is great, COME AT ME
agree, watched it twice.
I like Cena a lot, he was incredible in Peacemaker, especially the moment on the piano. But the video seems to reference Dave Batista negatively, which feels unfair given his brilliant cameo in Blade Runner 2049 and some solid action performances in Guardians and Spectre.
Can we please discuss the master class that is Dave Bautista's transition into Hollywood?
Not shade on Cena. but really it's Bautista who that best Wrestler turned actor
Did he just insinuate that Dave Bautista can't act? What have you been watching?
Daddys home 2 was actually awesome for the record.
The more I see how good these wrestlers can act, the more I realize how overrated The Rock is as an actor
Peacemaker was so surprisingly good
I feel like Dave Bautista paved the way. John Cena followed up and took it to the next level.
no tf he didn’t 😂
@@poindextertunes in Hollywood he did. Bautista has done a better range of acting than The Rock ever did.
Batista was killing but his best acting in my opinion and his earned respect was in Knock At The Cabin. He showed his skills and owned that role!
He and Dave Bautista prove themselves.
Good on you guys for calling out The Rock for doing the same damn role every movie
Why nobody saw John Cena.
There, fixed the video title for you.
Look at his most recent performances, his roles in Dune, Boy and the Heron, GOTG3, Knock at the Cabin and Glass Onion were very different
he's like Terry Crews. They are performers and comedians who just happened to be absolutely ripped.
This video short changes Dave Bautista so bad...
After watching Peacemaker last month, now I'm more excited to see him return in the next season.
John Cena totally triumphs in Amazon’s, Ricky Stanicky!
7:08 Damn 😂
Suburban Commando 🤣
Thats a deep cut for sure lmao
