I get you, I feel the same... I know that it's a "rule": wild animals belong to the forest and free spaces and we shouldn't encourage them to stay around humans. I don't know if I was able to follow this rule, there's a huge temptation... I feel that they do want such interactions.
I felt like I just wanted to pet her too when watching that. But bears need to be left alone. If one respects them, interactions are peaceful. Patrick knows what he is doing.
I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be against a little scratch... Problem is, they might want to keep you around after that... And evading a hugging bear is not a simple task. Too much love can kill... But yes, I'd be easily a seduced candidate to scratch their back and their bellies, like puppies...
A 9.5 for Ruby on the ' bear balance beam '. One slight bobble but two perfect dismounts. She would have been flirting with a 10.0 if she had gotten the bird feeder. Overall a fine effort.

She will figure it out. She is still quite young and not as experienced yet. Her effort was great but just not patient enough. I thought she tried to do a little bluff charge back up the stairs to see what you would do. I was scared for a second. But I know you have a plan. We just went to Blue Ridge mountains for vacation a few weeks ago and I was lucky enough to have a bear visit our cabin daily and feed all around our cabin. I think people have been feeding them. Because the same time every evening the it appeared to be the same bear and he seemed pretty confident.

Ruby is getting bigger and eventually will bring her cubs to visit. It's clear that bears are pretty smart; she was seeking a way to steady herself with a handhold on the overhead, but it wasn't there. She'll figure it out.
Exactly she was looking for a top handhold... Very clever strategist analyzing the situation. Amazing thing, too, they could like us sometimes use force on the object, esp out of frustration, but no, all delicate touching, their patience is exemplary compared to most humans'.

I’m experiencing up close and very personal wildlife that I never could on my porch like you thru videos. We’ve had mountain lions and their Kittens quite often because of the fires, food must be such a challenge and little water… so they’re coming down from the mountains looking for pets and anything rodent, they’re not nearly as entertaining when we see them, it’s a grab the dogs, kids and run in the house! You are a LEGIT bear whisperer…it’s such a pleasure & thx for sharing the videos.

Such a lovely vid! Thanks to you, Patrick, we can see so well how these magnificent animals think and act. What a lot of people don't know is how super-intelligent bears are. You can see it a little bit here where Ruby is carefully analyzing whether there is anything she can do about that damned box. In fact, her concentration was so intense that for a moment she entirely forgot about that thin rail she was standing on (major points deduction on execution there, Ruby!) 😁 I wonder what she would do with some kind of complex object where it was in her interests to solve it. If she's like the bears in IQ experiments, she'd have it worked out in about 2 minutes lol!
@@nikkinicole5588 They have found them under vacation homes in Tahoe and Mammoth. Not bad, but probably not preferred. Not sure it is cold enough long enough in NC for bears to hibernate.
@@nikkinicole5588 - It's never happened before, I don't really know. Bears don't usually go into full-blown hibernation in this part of the country. It's more like a state of torpor from which they can wake to feed, defend themselves, &c. I just would rather avoid it, there's plenty of good spots in the woods. Thanks!
When Ruby grows another 3-4 inches, she'll be able to reach the tray. I love the way she tested hanging on the horizontal crossbeam when she was on the pillar. If she steadied herself on that crossbeam with one paw, she could probably tip the tray with the other. #TeamRuby

This is a prime example of how humans and nature can get along. When you demonstrate the boundaries, and the animals understand, it's such a win-win.

I can't help but to think she spent more calories than she consumed.
Which makes this more of a gym than a porch.
Which also raises hunger, and makes close proximity a gambling... I would have tons of berries ready to trade against my life :).

@@nikkinicole5588 They have found them under vacation homes in Tahoe and Mammoth. Not bad, but probably not preferred. Not sure it is cold enough long enough in NC for bears to hibernate.
@@nikkinicole5588 - It's never happened before, I don't really know. Bears don't usually go into full-blown hibernation in this part of the country. It's more like a state of torpor from which they can wake to feed, defend themselves, &c. I just would rather avoid it, there's plenty of good spots in the woods. Thanks!

When Ruby grows another 3-4 inches, she'll be able to reach the tray. I love the way she tested hanging on the horizontal crossbeam when she was on the pillar. If she steadied herself on that crossbeam with one paw, she could probably tip the tray with the other.

This cub has a great shot at the 2024 Olympics. We just need to work on the dismount from the beam and I smell gold, or is that bird seed? Best in show for today.
