I laughed when I read the reviews on Amazon for this camera. Almost everyone who bought the solar panel complained it is not stated anywhere the solar panel has to be mounted in direct sunlight. Some of the pics show the panel mounted up in a tree or under an eve. It blows my mind how many people do not have common sense.
I would love for ring to add the batteries to the wired one so that if the power goes out or the crooks cut the wire it works all the time . Thanks great video
Without any storage options battery is useless. A ups or automatic generator would be the only answer. Than again when power goes down half the time internet does also.
This is BY FAR the best comparison review I have found for these spotlight cameras. Thank you! It would have been a disaster if we went with the battery one as I live in a high traffic area and need more monitoring zone control.
Excellent video pointing out the differences between the hardwired and battery cams, as well as the user interfaces. Most people (including me) would think that other than the power source, the cams would work the same.
I was planning to order 2 wired and one battery cam mounts, to save the cost of bringing power to the location on my fence where I would have installed the battery cam. After watching this video I am definitely going with 3 wired.
Great video! I’ve started buying the wired versions for differences that you touched on. Found out after buying five or so Battery Spotlight Cams that the wired versions are a must if you are mounting them on the exterior of your home. With the battery versions all you get are false alerts due the movement of trees and the limited motion settings. With wired versions I’m able to outline the areas around trees and shrubs and works perfectly. Thanks again for the great video. The side by side comparison was very helpful.
Thanks for taking the time to do this. There's actually a lot of difference between the two, but Ring don't seem to tell you that. This is about the only place I've found a side by side comparison. It's invaluable to be able to reduce false alarms and the settings on the wired version are far better from experience. Thanks again
Definitely the wired Ring Spotlight cam is better in motion detection.. it uses both the PIR sensor and the software algorithm and that is why it can notify you 3 seconds earlier as compared to the battery version.
I usually don't test WIFi distance because there are a lot of factors involved like number of walls, wall thickness and interference but it will be a good topic to do a comparison between different brand of cameras. I know Ring will be one of the last ones. It has a weak WiFi antenna and it will usually need a WiFi extender.
@@LifeHackster I got the wired version based on your review. Installed and Wifi has not been a problem as I moved one of my mesh routers a bit close to my front door. I'm getting -21db on the camera which is great.
Thanks for video. I tested both of these ring devices and i have to say the wired is much much better then the battery one. Picks up motion much sooner and catches all activity. The battery one actually mixed two different motions. Soo I’m returning the battery camera and keeping the wired. Just need to find a good way to plug and hide the wire. Thanks again.
Great video, thanks for sharing. It really shows how much they sacrificed performance to make the battery version. Hard to believe that having a dedicated power source can make that much difference. They must set everything for lowest power level to save battery life. I wish we had control of the power management. I wouldn't mind charging it like ever 5 days vs 2 weeks to get a little better video quality.
Best video so far. Great information, thanks.Hope Ring can do something with the sensitivity adjustment on the battery version, to many false alarms, and takes about 10 seconds to activate a movement
Have you done, or are you planning to, review the solar panel to determine what the least amount of sunlight is necessary to keep the batteries charged? I am thinking about buying one, but it would need to face North, which doesn’t afford the most direct sunlight.
I can tell you though as compared to other brands that I have that has a solar panel e.g. Arlo and Reolink, the Ring is the fastest to charge. Ring stated that the panel should at least have sun shining on it couple of hours a day to be effective.
Great video! I live around a lot of Armenians, who steal mail, identities, and many other white collar crimes. So I want one of these. And you made my choice easy. Thank you for a very professional video! You kept the music nice and low, and your voice is extremely clear and easy to understand. I wish more people made videos like you!
This video is SOLID!! Thanks for taking the time to be so detailed in your comparisons! Definitely hitting the Subscribe button. Love that Pilipinas hat, too!
Debating on getting 2-4 cameras. I need one for the front and back yard. Front of house faces north, south side gets back sun exposure. However, I live in MI and it gets -30F in the winter and no sun. I have outlets outside. Suggestions on a brand or brands that would work for my concerns. No lag between movements, leaves blowing creating false alerts, sunlight making the camera unable to see. I'd prefer not drilling holes through my home or walls but ideally no batteries to change outside etc.
Have always learned so much from your videos. Hard to believe this video is already 5 years old. It's fun looking back at old content. Anyway to convert an old Spotlight Cam Battery to a wired plug-in one? Looks like all the power cords do is charge the battery(s), is there a way to plug in a cord and make it work like a wired one, like the current models? Thanks!
Battery powered..I have the Eufy cam E, Arlo Pro 2, Reolink Argus Eco and Blink XT 2 ...all are free and with subscription would be Ring battery spotlight..
The battery powered has some software issues on it that Ring has to address. There is a delay because it has to power up from an off position unlike the wired one which is always on.
When I was trying it out...it works pretty good...I now have uninstalled the solar panel and just run the batteries..the solar panel needs to have at least 2-4 hours of direct sunlight to be effective...
I got the camera on October and I swapped the battery out on December...battery was 36%. From December until now the battery level is 65%...I'm thinking the battery should last from 3-6 months depending on your use.
How do I disable/turn off the light? Also since you have two Ring Spotlights, does that mean you need two monthly subscriptions for them to record in the cloud? Thanks for the video.
You can control, schedule and dim the lights from the app. Yes on the subscription and if you have 3 or more Ring cameras, it is worth it to get their 10/month; 100/year plan.
With ring floodlight cam you can also control the lights , still when its dark the lights will always turn on.Even when the alarm is turned off.Does this cam have the same issue? I want to place it on a terras & not having the lights turning on everytime i move on my chair.
Great video! Is the mounting base for both cameras the same? I just had a wired version and am thinking about replacing with a battery version and hoping to not have to drill new holes. Thank you.
Did you ever get the freezing issue resolved on the battery version. Mine is always freezing up to the point where it is better to just look at the event but it even does it.
Yes, my spotlight cam battery has little to no freezing now. It is in the same location where I had it before and the came connections so I am assuming Ring updated a fixed it. -> ruclips.net/video/tlteuLqOaHc/видео.html
Thanks for the video. As the battery version has a power input for the solar panel. Can you just plug this in to charge the batteries and turn it into a wired version with battery backup? Thanks again
Any idea when Ring will release a new version of the wired spotlight cam? 🤔 They’re on sale at the moment, so I wondered if that was a sign we can expect a new version soon
I would like to see them add the option for "Custom motion zones" to the Battery Cam. I think its possible. The "Custom motion zones" requires the camera to be on at all times, which is why the battery one does not have it in the firmware, to reduce battery usage. But i think it could still be integrated as a secondary motion check before sending notifications that could be false. Battery Cam Scenario: Motion is detected, Camera powers up & begins recording like normal. With cam powered up, firmware now does a motion check in the preset "Custom motion zones". No motion in "Custom motion zones", so no push notification is sent. Unit still records the event & then goes to sleep, just like it would normally do. This would help to reduce false triggers from trees, leaves or animals, outside the area the person would like to not cause false alarm notification.
Wow.. that's a good idea and it might be the one that Arlo is using in their "arlo smart" subscription. My only thought though that it still uses PIR as the primary motion detection which is limited in distance. So, if you are monitoring an area that is 25 feet, then customized zones beyond that is not going to be effective.
Excellent channel. I'm not too familiar with outdoor security cameras. I'm looking for a wireless outdoor security camera. Is this my best choice? I don't want to put any wires/holes through walls. I want something simple. Thanks in advance.
As far as I know, No..just because the battery version only uses PIR sensor which doesn't base it on the camera's view as compared to the plugged in versions which has both PIR and also the camera's view for motion detection. To have this feature on the battery powered one, it has to be on all the time which will drain the battery quick.
I live in a very sunny area and I have the camera with the solar charging panel. I've never seen my battery below 89%. Sure would be nice for the company to provide this as an option for the consumer. Where I need to place the camera there is a lot of trees around in the field of view, and without this feature, it makes the camera useless for notification. Thanks for your channel, very well done.
I have my spotlight cam in my front yard and has no issues as to false notifications because of trees and leaves movement... It uses PIR which detects heat so you should have no issues with it even when placed near trees.
The wired one seems better, I just don't like the idea of having that cord someone can just unplug. What's to stop them from just walking backwards up to the camera and unplugging it? I wish they had a wired one that installed on an existing outdoor light like the floodlight cam. I'm planning on having the floodlight cam over my garage and in my backyard, but I have two lights on my deck I'd like to add and the spotlight cam makes more sense for my deck. But after watching this and your floodlight cam/spotlight cam comparison video I'm leaning towards not getting the spotlight cam.
Yes, they have the "mount" version too...but at the same price, I will get the floodlight...but the spotlight cam mount has a smaller footprint though, so it really depends on your needs.
Ya it stinks it's the same price as the floodlight for the mount version. But this one would be for the side entrance and basically be pointed at my neighbor's house so I figured the spotlight would be less obtrusive than the floodlight. They have a split-level home so the camera would be pointing towards their garage with bedrooms above the garage. So with the spotlight I figured I could just direct it so it'll catch people approaching that door. I don't have any windows on that side of the house so as long as it'll catch people as they walk up to the door that's all I need.
So my girlfriend has the battery version and there is no sound coming in. Hmmm. Had me thinking it had no sound option. But I see yours does record audio. Will have to look into it.
It should record audio. Try the 2 way audio feature and see if you can hear on both sides, if not, then it might be a hardware problem and you will need to contact Ring.
I actually do have the 3 types of Ring spotlights..I purchased the battery one so that I can easily hooked it up anywhere without needing to think about power supply options...I have issues with freezing footage on my battery spotlight at this time and Ring is aware of this.. ring.com/share/6516490205887293920
Did you notice any improvements in the wired version in the recent form update 1.11.26? If you haven’t got that version yet get on to Ring and they’ll push it to your device.
Since the Wired version has been in use for while.. Did u clean the lens on that one before the test? That could be why the night vision on the wired is less clear then the Solar device. Id like to see if cleaning the lens made a difference due to id be using mine more for the night vision more then day time use.. Thx!
Cleaned it and I really didn't see any difference. Check out the Yi outdoor cam if you want a camera for night vision - ruclips.net/video/KQSPI6PKTeo/видео.htmlm31s
I'm thinking of getting the battery cam. Does the backup battery have to be charged by the solar panel or is there another way? Also, I think those night lights will attract bugs. Will the bugs set off the light? I had that problem with a solar light I was using.
The battery can be removed to be charged..so, if you have 2 batteries...one is a backup and will not be used until the other one is depleted..then you can removed that battery to be charged via the USB cable ~8 hours or so..then just reinstall it which now, it becomes the backup battery. The night lights/spotlights are LEDs and they are not "on" that long to attract any bugs.
Have they update the lag on the wireless camera I'm looking to get a wireless one but not sure. My only problem with the wired one is that I don't have a spot to hide the wired Thanks for the great info
I'm actually going to to an update on this pretty soon and I can tell you that the choppiness is gone on the battery powered one. I have to do more testing but it seems like Ring has fixed the issue...
Thanks for the information. Do you know if the ring battery cam will pick up motion from tree leaves? Because I need to mount it in a tree to see what needs to be seen at night. Can I turn off all lights on the camera so as the camera is not visible? Thanks.
Thank You... I made a video about it but currently it doesn't work and Ring knows about this and should be fixing the issue. ruclips.net/video/LRZQBb2SLUg/видео.html
Ring spotlight wired is way better for most uses. Battery has too many issues. Had the battery version and now using wired; for me, hands down, wired is the way to go with pretty much all cameras. I use Arlo pro 2 cameras too, and they are all wired using accessory cables which enhances their use-ability tremendously. When in doubt, go with WIRED every time.
Ring mislead consumers on the motion distance. They say ff the camera is installed 9 fee an pointed parallel to the ground, it can pick up human motion at 30 feet. If I could post a screen shot of my camera installed 9 feet you will see the motion zone is more like 15 feet. The doorbell 2 camera has a wider/longer motion zone that these cameras.
Is it possible to connect a Ring Chime to this setup, so when a motion is detected through the Spotlight Cam, it will activate the chime sound? Also, you know if its possible to have multiple Ring Chimes to only one Cam?
Great review. I've got the battery one, an extra battery & solar panel. Like you I hope they update it so that I can access the lights & siren from the dashboard instead of having to go into live view. When I push siren I have to push another pop up button saying I want to activate it or cancel. I don't like that.
Yes...the siren button does have a confirmation pop up making sure you want to activate it...The solar panel works pretty good..mine is always topped off 100% since I installed it. Thanks...
Is there a way to convert the wired on the spotlight cam to the wireless one to take battery backup? I know you can take off the cable by disconnecting the hardwire inside the spotlight cam but that's about it.
I laughed when I read the reviews on Amazon for this camera. Almost everyone who bought the solar panel complained it is not stated anywhere the solar panel has to be mounted in direct sunlight.

Have you heard if the battery (wireless) spotlight camera will have the method of defining the motion zones as the wired spotlight camera?
As far as I know, No..just because the battery version only uses PIR sensor which doesn't base it on the camera's view as compared to the plugged in versions which has both PIR and also the camera's view for motion detection. To have this feature on the battery powered one, it has to be on all the time which will drain the battery quick.

Nathan Cunningham use some metal conduit up to your camera that would be a good deterrent.

I actually do have the 3 types of Ring spotlights..I purchased the battery one so that I can easily hooked it up anywhere without needing to think about power supply options...I have issues with freezing footage on my battery spotlight at this time and Ring is aware of this.. ring.com/share/6516490205887293920
Can you run the wires through the wall or roof? I want to conceal the wires from the outside of the house.
You can but the cable needs to be cut so that you don't have to drill a big hole. Cutting the wire will void the warranty.
@@LifeHackster thanks! Appreciate the input!!
Did you notice any improvements in the wired version in the recent form update 1.11.26? If you haven’t got that version yet get on to Ring and they’ll push it to your device.
Paul Moran is this update pushed to all ring cams or only the spotlight camera?
leonardo herrera Pushed to wired cams and Doorbell Pro.
Paul Moran awesome, thanks!
I will do that..will see..
Paul Moran does your camera say the current firmware or does it now say up to date ?
Great video! Thank you for the important information
Does the Solar panel work pretty good?
Since the Wired version has been in use for while.. Did u clean the lens on that one before the test? That could be why the night vision on the wired is less clear then the Solar device. Id like to see if cleaning the lens made a difference due to id be using mine more for the night vision more then day time use.. Thx!
I'll clean the lens and check it again...
LifeHackster Any update?
Magic Happy new year wired for me. Your are so professional and a.great manner to explain things.
Thank You. I appreciate it.
I'm going to buy me this to keep an eye on my truck..
LifeHackster oh ok thank u
LifeHackster is there a way if u put the camera sideways can u set the app so this way the camera can look straight
This was a very good comparison. Thank you for doing this.
You are welcome.
Dayum tu trabajas real good thank you
Thanks for the information.
Do you know if the ring battery cam will pick up motion from tree leaves?
Because I need to mount it in a tree to see what needs to be seen at night. Can I turn off all lights on the camera so as the camera is not visible? Thanks.
Very good review! Where can I find your video on adding the Ring spotlight cam to an existing floodlight sensor input. Thank you,
Thank You... I made a video about it but currently it doesn't work and Ring knows about this and should be fixing the issue. ruclips.net/video/LRZQBb2SLUg/видео.html
Hi there I Thank You very. I like it a lot
I agree. Ring's wired cameras are better overall for motion detection, alert notifications and dependability.
Thanks. Very informative and we'll done.
Do stick up cam comparison battery vs wired
Coming up pretty soon... I didn't even realized that I haven't done that....thanks.
LifeHackster i had them both but i prefer the wired because they have a big difference
So can you control the lights from phone for the Spotlight Cam battery ?
Yes.
What is that song in the background it’s nice for kids to put them to sleep

Thanks for the great review. How long is the power cord on the wired version?
It has a 20 foot cable.
How long is the cable on the wired version please?
20 feet.
If the power to the house goes off, will either camera still transmit?
No it will not... unless, your internet router is on backup battery (UPS), then the battery version will still record.

Is it possible to connect a Ring Chime to this setup, so when a motion is detected through the Spotlight Cam, it will activate the chime sound? Also, you know if its possible to have multiple Ring Chimes to only one Cam?
So on the battery version you can't turn on the light manually? Or the siren? Also when you buy this it only comes with one battery pack?
You can turn on the light and the siren manually and it only comes with one battery pack.
Now that it’s been about a year since this video... do the batteries actually last as long as Ring says?
Awesome job!
Thank You.
great video, it really helped me out, thanks
You are welcome.
LifeHackster . When are you going to do an extreme weather test ? Heavy Rain etc
Thanks...
Renee Hughes why did u get an extra battery if u got the pannel? The pannel will keep the one battery charged
I'm not sure if people know that the wireless camea can have a charger wire plugged in to camera while being battery operated. That's my setup.
Does the wired camera have a physical plug, it's not hard wired?
Yes , it has a plug. ruclips.net/video/vS-QFG5VPhc/видео.htmlm54s
How long is the wire?
LifeHackster i
How long is the power cord for the wired version and solar panel?
20 foot for the wired version and 13 feet for the solar panel.
Very well done. Thank you
You are welcome.
Is there a way to convert the wired on the spotlight cam to the wireless one to take battery backup? I know you can take off the cable by disconnecting the hardwire inside the spotlight cam but that's about it.
