This movie has gained a second lease of life in the reaction age; I always find it fascinating to see today's young, media-savvy reactors' take on a subject that, at the time this movie was released, seemed like an absurd exaggeration of the early "Reality TV" shows of the time (bear in mind that 'Big Brother', although conceived a year before this movie, would not premiere in Holland until the year after). Nowadays, the idea of 24-hour streaming a life isn't so far-fetched, and it's more about how fun it is to see the mechanics of what would be necessary to make it work. By the end though, the message is the same: what kind of emotional impact would it have on someone to realize their life isn't what it seems, but to some extent has been manufactured for others' enjoyment? I think that must also hit differently for some reactors too. Sorry, that got a bit dark. Love re-watching these old classics with you as always Biss 💖
Yeah, it really kinda freaked me out how she *wasn’t* horrified at Truman’s situation and felt like Christof had nothing to apologize for. I almost couldn’t even watch this reaction. What’s wild is that she’s just like the “audience” characters in the movie. She related to those characters, even to the point of feeling moved when he escaped, but she never empathized with the protagonist at all and didn’t even seem to be able to suspend disbelief enough to think of him as a character as opposed to thinking of him as a Jim Carrey role and focusing on Carrey’s performance. I don’t know if it’s a generational thing or whether she’s just a very callous sort of person, but I’ve watched every Truman Show reaction on RUclips and I really don’t think I’ve ever seen a reactor care so little about Truman. They didn't let Sylvia be Truman's wife because 1. they already paid/casted Merl & 2. Sylvia wouldn't ever go along with lying to Truman because she actually loves him. The town looks like a movie set but it is a real place, purposely designed not to need cars. This quaint town provides a stunning backdrop for many scenes, with its white sand beaches and lush greenery surrounding a medley of colorful shops and homes." The town was especially on the basis of the "New Urbanism" and has a lot of non-traditional features, like no front lawns, all the buildings have to be different design so it doesn't like a traditional American suburban development of cookie-cutter houses, and only native plants are used. It is a private development so there were no zoning laws they had to overcome.
Underrated ? The Truman Show ? It seems to me that it's a cult movie which is well appreciated. I wouldn't say overrated neither, this is a really good movie and people should watch it, but I don't believe that it's "underrated". Particularly from one of Jim Carrey's movie. Eternal Sunshine, well I'm not saying about Jim, he might have been a good actor in it, and I'm sure he was, but I found the movie very boring and the story didn't catch me so... Maybe it's underrated I dunno, but I hear a LOT about it being so special while my own experience didn't match the expectations. So to my POV, ESOTSM is a bit overrated...
I can either have my neighbors hear her voice with that laugh and a sweet whisper of something the movie is saying that I'm supposed to hear and understand the commentary for, or I can turn the volume down to 1 and still blow my ears out while clips of a movie plays and she sits in a chair and zooms every 4 seconds. Awesome!
This is a horror movie where everyone you see in it, except for Truman and Sylvia, are villains taking part in the lifelong imprisonment and emotional manipulation and torture of an orphaned baby. I love this movie. Gives us all alot to think about.
Not even that, there’s some cut scenes that put a lot more depth to the actors and how they feel. Probably forced, or it’s their livelihood now. A cut scene had Truman’s friend spot him on the search for him but he let him climb on the boat and keep ‘looking’ for him.
Bissflix this film is a representation of the 'Allegory of the cave'. we are all trapped in our own worlds and we can rarely see the walls. Also, Jim's acting i think isnt over the top for this film becuase you have to remember the character is mentally a child. he's never had any negative experiences. his life is easy.
This movie was a warning, at the time of the start of reality shows. It was before everybody gave their personal data to social medias, before reaction channels on RUclips and lives on Twitch. There was also a forgettable movie with Mathew McConaughey, EDtv 1999 from Ron Howard, about same kind of fear. Jim Carrey was very subtle in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004. There are a lot of good actors. The visuals are unique. The story is great. There is no way, you will not watch that movie. It is too good. The Majestic and Man on the Moon are also very good movies. But they are completely based on the main role, played by Jim Carrey. The director of The Truman Show was the director of Dead Poets Society 1989 with Robin Williams, Witness 1985 with Harrison Ford, Fearless 1993 with Jeff Bridges, Master and Commander 2003 with Russell Crowe. Very good popular movies with very good actors.
Jim Carrey's greatest (non-comedy) work is without a doubt "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004). It shows what a surprisingly great actor he is when he's not just messing around. He and Kate Winslet give career-best performances. I cannot recommend it too highly.
30:15 "They could have just put _her_ to play Meryl." No, remember that Sylvia was just an extra. The actress chosen to play Meryl is sure to have signed a long-term contract committing to do the product placement and all the other things the T.V. show wanted and needed. However, Sylvia's contract as an extra is sure to have been much more limited. And there's no way she'd have agreed to the "recurring cast member" one because she was already an activist against the show who wanted it cancelled and Truman set free. Don't forget what her pin said: "When will it end?"
If you'd like to see Jim Carey in a non-comedy role...you should check him out in "The Majestic". He's absolutely fantastic in that movie. It's a straight up drama.
This was Jim Carrey's first serious acting role, before that he was only known for his comedy films. Calling it a comedy was probably a marketing stunt, because only a psychopath would call this movie a comedy. It's a dystopian, psychological horror film.
Before you give up on Jim Carey completely, you absolutely _must_ watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). (Note that it's not a comedy or even a dramedy.)
Its a crying shame the Academy Award morons refuse to recognize Jim's talent. Hope he one day wins and lets his azz deliver a "What took you so long?" acceptance speech as an epic F.U. 😂😂😂
Come on, he is just making faces. It was funny to some 20-30 years ago. No one is interested in that kind of comedy today, except some people that grew up with these movies. And the biggest stupidity of his movies is that no one ever reacts to his weird behavior. Especially in the movie where he is a lawyer. They all act like nothing is happening. I really dislike that
@@milannesic5718uh… excuse me, but making those faces is a talent that you will never have nor anyone else! There’s no one else who has that physical talent like him. Also, I wouldn’t say that no one is interested in that kind of comedy these days, if more people these days and of this generation would actually see his movie they’d appreciate too… and some won’t just like people of any generation
@@milannesic5718I’m sorry but I am born in a time where most of his best movies were already pretty old. And you’re just wrong truthfully, he has a personality and face that lets him convey emotions in a reall unique way, they make something really good for comedy as an addition, but also make something unique out of when they aren’t comedic.
Many people on the net argue quite seriously that the Thurman Show is not a fantasy - but a kind of story about how our lives actually work. I personally have experienced the same feelings more than once in recent years as the hero of the film... The Mandela Effect alone is worth it.
27:58 This part was _amazing,_ I thought. Truman Burbank, a man who has been _lied_ to, _all_ his life suddenly demonstrates a grasp of the practice _himself._ The whole world was watching as, somehow, he managed to obtain this ladder and make this _hole,_ and _no one_ saw it. He fooled _everybody._
Yeah, it's better to judge this movie as a Drama more than a comedy, I think. And as you are someone who isn't necessarily a Jim Carrey comedy fan, I think that works better for you. He has a few roles where he strays from his typical rubberface comedy, and they are actually some of his best movies, in my opinion.
The overexaggerated acting is Jim Carrey style in both comedy and drama. He is the goat. Check out eternal sunshine of the spotless mind and The number 23 for an even more serious role.
Truman has cameras all over his body in buttons on his clothes and in the ring he's wearing. All they needed to do was choose his ring camera and they see exactly where he was.
Truman's Moon looks so awesome... Ever since I was a child I've loved the moon. I Live in the UK and I remember once when I was about 8 years old I went to Australia. Seeing the moon "upside down" was really scary to me. My little child brain couldn't handle seeing something I was so used to seeing and it not being not the same. None of the stars in the sky I was so used to seeing were not there. A child's brain just can not handle that. There's something peaceful and soothing about the moon and the stars in the night sky. But when you are on the opposite side of the world the night sky has a whole bunch of different stars and an "upside down" moon. There's no North Star. There's no Orion, There's no Big Dipper/Plough, no Sirrus... I just remember being so scared.
Harrison Ford was known for adventure films, but the actor wanted to expand his acting skills. He got Australian director Peter Weir to direct him in “Witness.” Robin Williams was known for comedy. He wanted to be seen as a serious actor (he’d studied at The Juilliard School). And seeing the success with Peter Weir got him to direct him in “Dead Poet’s Society”. Jim Carrey, also wanting to be known for more serious roles and following on the previously mentioned, got Peter Weir to direct him in “The Truman Show.” All felt that this Australian director could bring out the serious actor in them.
Big parts of my life I have felt my life was a Trueman show, every time I tried to change things or wanted to travel, something went wrong! My first time on a plane happened when I took a trip with very short notice to UK age 35, every other time something came up. Every travel, promotion, or relationship always ended in ways that I thought were strange... So most of my life I felt like Trueman, so when I saw this movie it really hurt my brain
The real scary thing though, is realizing they only made the Truman Show to convince you that this sort of thing was a fiction, so that you wouldnt suspect your own life is fake, and they could accuse you of stealing the "paranoid idea" from a movie.
For a variety of different humor type comedies that are good, consider the following: The Emperor's New Groove, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, A Fish Called Wanda, and Uncle Buck. I suppose you can toss in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but despite being one of my favorite comedies of all time, it's an unusal taste that will really appreciate it.
I would consider this a horror comedy myself. He is dialed back from his other choices around this time. Solid performance. I feel the same with Adam Sandler. He is just to much in a lot that he does, but certain films you really get a better understanding how talented he is. Personally I would have ended the movie with him not surviving on the boat and with the ass that created the show being taken away in cuffs.
I love this movie! I always recommend this film for a more serious side of Jim Carrey. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Number 23 are also serious roles for Jim Carrey with little to no comedy. He really is a great actor.
Which is what she did almost immediately the first time they talked with eachother. Meanwhile Meryl was all up for anything including having someone she dislike's baby.
I can't speak for everyone, but I don't ont mind lengthy outros. It's part of the reaction experience. It's the drawn-out intros where people rehash every every detail of the previous episode that I can do without.
I would say this movie is a Drama with comedic aspects to it. Not all comedy elements and supposed to make you spit your drink out, but to break up the drama at times. I think any "over-acting" the was in the movie was perfectly times. I would think a person in that position, thinking he's losing his mind, would overreact. For those reasons, it's one of my favorite Jim Carry movies along with "The Magestic." But I do love his crazy movies too. Great reaction.
Why do you need to be told a film is a drama (or whatever genre)? Just watch it and see what it is. As for the over-the-top moments in this particular film, you're watching someone learn their entire world is not what it seems. The antics in that situation are totally appropriate.
Please check out " Pleasantville "... it's another odd little movie that is really good. Robin Williams was probably one of the more universally liked comedians to switch to acting and had great success. He was a little over the top at times which I believe other comedians took as the recipe for success and each of them tried to be more over the top with their characters like it was a competition, which comes across as way over the top and in your face type acting and humor. I think for me, Will Ferrell also falls into this category. I probably watched this movie 2 or 3 times over the years before I actually liked it and it wasn't for the great acting, but more so for the situations that are created in the movie. Keep up the great work Biss and Happy Thanksgiving !!!
I can't put this movie into comedy genre. There are a lot of psychological things going on in this movie. Starting from how media can alter the reality around you, create a perception that you confuse as reality... to the final scenes were the short attention span of humans is depicted - how easily they forgot about Truman. Also the last line can hint to history repeating itself. There's a lot of symbolism in this movie from 1998 and it's still applicable today in 2024, so we can say the movie was way ahead of its time. Jim Carrey is known for his comedies, yes. In this area, yeah, he is not my type as well. But the serious movies of Jim are very good. And he shows how good of an actor he is. I genuinely recommend other movies from him.
Bisscute, you and I share the same sense of comedy, a darker edge to comedy. Snatch was my idea of comedy. If you haven't seen Deadpool, I know you will love it, because it is very much up our alley as far as "comedy".
Jim carreys overacting is intentional here...he is basically on a tv show where everyone around him are actors who respond to him in a heightened way... as the movie goes along he becomes less and less cartoonish in his interactions...ending with his catchphrase being just a normal human response... jim carreys acting is impeccable in this movie.
About the "Drama-Comedy" and the "kind of humour"... As said in another comment, I share with you my "problem" with most of Jim Carrey's movie. And I think you might think the same about that kind of "american humour" about Adam Sandler, which seems to be VERY cheesy, too much for me... BUT... Yes, BUT... In this category of "Drama-Comedy" that AT THE END, fits well and have some deep message, I hugely recommend "Click" (Adam Sandler), which might be cheesy, BUT is a very beautiful movie with a lot of laughs and a lot of tears. So please, do "Click"... (From an European "neighbour", French in Switzerland...)
I like Jim Carey. He is noted for being WAY over the top. Usually comedies. This movie shows a different, dramatic side of him. Similar to Will Ferrell movies, Will Ferrell was in a suprising drama/comedy, 'Stranger Than Fiction' (2006) Worth seeing. I was really impressed by this movie.
My wife can't stand him. She says he's a performer, not an actor. I thought on that and I think that's actually a very good way to describe his style of acting. I can understand why some people don't like him, but I can appreciate it for what it is.
@@neil2444I mean, yes… in a way your wife does have a point. But in another way she’s incorrect… she actually needs to put aside her ignorance and negativity and actually watch his movies to better judge him. Because he actually is a good actor… not the best dramatic actor but still good enough. When this movie first came out in 1998, a door opened for new fans of him who didn’t like him before this movie. This is one of the most beloved and adored movies ever made and it had alot to do with the versatility of Carrey and seeing how talented he is and his dramatic acting. Has your wife ever even seen this movie?
Thank you for mentioning Man on the Moon because that movie often gets overlooked. But I don’t think she should watch it because I strongly doubt she knows who Andy Kaufman even is. If you don’t know someone then you wouldn’t understand their biography movie
Yes, Carrey exaggerates; that's his whole style of comedy that people love (not really for me.) If you want to see him less exaggerative, watch "23" or "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." If he grew up on the show, he should not find it strange that people are advertising products or moving in circles, because that's all he knows. I can even ignore that things are not built despite there being no good reason and that the actors never learned about their fake occupation. However, what really gets to me is that everything went well for decades until everything suddenly started going wrong. I know "when it rains it pours," but that's not about things going right for so long and then a lot of mistakes within a week.
Truman didn't get dags. Yeah, it's a drama-comedy (dramedy) with more emphasis on the drama. IMO, it's one of Carrey's better performances and an interesting concept. For another not-always-popular comedic actor turned drama check out Stranger Than Fiction, and for something truely surreal, check out Being John Malkovich.
1:27 "We find many viewers leave him on all night for comfort." Now if that's true, it's the _ultimate_ sign that someone's life has become too much dominated by TV.
There are comedic elements, but I wouldnt claasify this as a comedy in any way. Carrey is perfect for this in that he's goofy enough to be realistically someone who people might want to watch day in day out, but he also nails the emotional elements beautifully.

"Can you imagine living 30 years, trapped, where everyone lies to you and nothing matters?"
Yes, actually
Never underestimate the resolve of those who have nothing left to lose, that is my takeaway from this movie.
We don't see what happens to Truman after he gets out because now finally he has a private life and we aren't allowed to see it.
This movie is so iconic that it changed the world in a way
Bissflix this film is a representation of the 'Allegory of the cave'. we are all trapped in our own worlds and we can rarely see the walls.
It was well before RUclips and Twitch were even _founded_ (2005 and 2011, respectively).
My fave non comedy of his is the number 23
Nah this ones better.
It's not a "comedy", lots of movies are labelled comedy just because they have some humorous moments. It's stupid.
I can't go a year without watching this movie.
Before you give up on Jim Carey completely, you absolutely _must_ watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). (Note that it's not a comedy or even a dramedy.)
" A comedy , not my sense Of humor ". .
Absolutly not a comedy girl , that's Dystopia
The travel agent had a makeup napkin on. I always thought it was food related too but now it makes more sense
The music is composed by Philip Glass - and he plays the pianist in the studio doing the live music
This movie was way ahead of its time. So much so that most people still don't realize that they're also living in a simulation.
They have known this for thousand of years:
ruclips.net/video/pKoPugBGNM8/видео.html
Its a crying shame the Academy Award morons refuse to recognize Jim's talent. Hope he one day wins and lets his azz deliver a "What took you so long?" acceptance speech as an epic F.U. 😂😂😂
Come on, he is just making faces. It was funny to some 20-30 years ago. No one is interested in that kind of comedy today, except some people that grew up with these movies. And the biggest stupidity of his movies is that no one ever reacts to his weird behavior. Especially in the movie where he is a lawyer. They all act like nothing is happening. I really dislike that
Well did you know that he won a Golden Globe for this movie?
Jim C's over the top crazy acting was a good fit with a character going through an over the top, crazy life event.
Very enjoyable reaction 😊
Not liking Jim Carrey is the first real serious black mark against you 🥲
Yeah, it's better to judge this movie as a Drama more than a comedy, I think.
Ehh… the Number 23 was way too weird for him 😵💫
It was very hard to wrap my head around him being in a dark, psychological thriller like that
Truman has cameras all over his body in buttons on his clothes and in the ring he's wearing.
I also am not a fan of his comedies but I absolutely love this movie and eternal sunshine
"Man on the moon" is probably the best incursion of Jim Carrey in drama acting, he certainly shows there how good of an actor he is, a real talent.
Jim Carrey, also wanting to be known for more serious roles and following on the previously mentioned, got Peter Weir to direct him in “The Truman Show.”
All felt that this Australian director could bring out the serious actor in them.
"Cue the sun." Damn, I love that line! 🌅
If she vibes with “Snatch” then I hope she checks out “The Gentlemen” and “Boondock Saints”… cause that’s totally my preferred type of humor too :)
Comedians in dramatic roles are the best ❤
Robin Williams proves that, but Jim Carey is very good as well.
Finally, a reactor who understands the crossed fingers.
i actually agree. I'm not a huge fan of his movies usually, but this one he knocked out of the park. i was pleasantly surprised
32:49 » that way the sequel could be called Truman The Janitor or something like that, lol 😂
.

"liar liar " is my favorite jim carrey movie. check that one out.
Yes, Liar Liar is definitely one of his best movies… it’s right up there with Ace Ventura, the Mask and Dumb & Dumber
I love this movie! I always recommend this film for a more serious side of Jim Carrey. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Number 23 are also serious roles for Jim Carrey with little to no comedy. He really is a great actor.
2:56 Come and play with us, Truman.
12:43 » no one would dare killing the super man, lol 😆
the girl couldn't play Meryl becuase if she loved him she'd tell him the truth.
A great non comdey of Jim Carrey's is Eternal Sundhine of the Spotless Mind. Amazing film you should definitely see.
33:23 » well, as i said, i grew up with that movie in the back of my mind, lol 😅
I've been waiting for Truman Part 2. He's in the real world, gets the girl, and sues the heck out of the television network and producer.
5:21 Yeah. _I've_ had days that have seemed kind of like that.
How polite and courteous he was till he discovered the ruse. All he did was be himself......CANADIAN..😂😂😂😂😂
I absolutely LOVE that shirt!!
We're all living in the Truman Show...
NO-ONE looks better in Biss Merch.........than Biss!
Bisscute, you and I share the same sense of comedy, a darker edge to comedy. Snatch was my idea of comedy. If you haven't seen Deadpool, I know you will love it, because it is very much up our alley as far as "comedy".
This is number 2 on my list of favorite Jim Carrey movies, outranked only by Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
I wasnt a big fan of him but after this movie, I'm willing to give his other movies a shot
Thats actually a real town in Florida called Seaside. lol
I agree with you he's does go over board with his acting.
Three movies which might change your opinion about Jim Carrey: this one, "The Majestic" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".
I really don't think this movie is meant to be a comedy at all, just a drama. Just having Jim Carrey in it doesn't make it one!
Просто чомусь люди не хочуть сприймати Джима інакше, не хочуть розуміти, що він загалом дуже потужний актор, не актор одного жанру
Please have a watch of 'This is Spinal Tap' my personal favourite movie ❤
1:03 First of all: day 10909. And the premise becomes a bit more obvious when you do a bit mental math and figure out it's almost 30 years.
'The Moon is so close.' and lit up all wrong...
2:01 » we've all been there, right? 😂
Your shirt is amazing 😍 The female Vlad Tepes.
Recommend: 13 Assassins. A great Japanese samurai movie. 😊😊
You can play new game "American Arcadia" having the same story idea of tv show with real humans.
Wow, you just couldn't get past the part about people driving cars in a fake town, could you?
Hey Biss, please react to "Shoot'em up". If you want to have a good laugh with a fast paced action movie then this is THE MOVIE to go to.
Uh… no, Will Ferrell sucks! He’s not in the least bit funny. He’s not half the star that Jim is
@@neil2444I mean, yes… in a way your wife does have a point.
Yes . I don't care for his movies. But 'Stranger Than Fiction' is NOT a "Will Farrel' performance. I think you will be suprised.@@nsasupporter7557

A great movie to watch for Jim Carry is Man on the Moon. The true life story of Andy Kofman.
Thank you for mentioning Man on the Moon because that movie often gets overlooked. But I don’t think she should watch it because I strongly doubt she knows who Andy Kaufman even is. If you don’t know someone then you wouldn’t understand their biography movie
Yes, Carrey exaggerates; that's his whole style of comedy that people love (not really for me.) If you want to see him less exaggerative, watch "23" or "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
If he grew up on the show, he should not find it strange that people are advertising products or moving in circles, because that's all he knows.
"Day 10" 😂
Day 10… THOUSAND!!!
👍. Jim acts inlay that's make him.. him. Just like how we all act the way we act in our own way.
1:27 "We find many viewers leave him on all night for comfort."
Now if that's true, it's the _ultimate_ sign that someone's life has become too much dominated by TV.
"Cut your nails!" 😅😅😅
