I did my master's in Screenwriting and Sylvester Stallone is a much appreciated inspiration as a writer. There are so many brilliant things happening in this script, especially with dialogue. I have no idea how many times I've watched this film, but I always find something new pop out that I hadn't caught before, mostly little things that are so clever yet subtle. Terrific story, terrific writing.
The Vaseline is so the glove slips off, preventing some cuts. When a boxer throws a punch they twist at the wrist, in an attempt to get the glove to grab skin and twist tearing open a cut.
Wonderful reaction! Modern audiences often don't understand the differences of a world almost 50 years ago, or don't have the life experience or maturity to understand things like Paulie's character or the fact that Tony Gazzo the loan shark could be a friend to Rocky or not thinking that Rocky forced himself on Adrian. Not only did you not get hung up on those things, but you understood everything perfectly - especially the most important part - Rocky's character. People watching reactions don't care if you like or dislike something. We just want you to "get it". Your enjoyment is just icing on the cake. Cheers!
I still think Rocky and Adrian's relationship is one of the most genuine and adorable relationships ever on media. Also its amazing that we pretty much get their entire lives together on screen.
I've always felt the first two Rocky epsiodes are so closely linked, you really need to see the second one to complete the original story. You won't be disappointed if you watch it.
It was not only Stallone's script. He had to fight to realize the film. It is a love movie and a movie about boxing. But it is also a description that most of the people have to a fight for their everyday home and meal and don't have the chance to fulfill the American Dream. A great movie and as well as "Rambo" six years later one of my favourites for sure. An amazing start of Stallones world career.
This takes place here in Philadelphia. We have a statue of him at the art museum steps that he ran up. There's always a line of people to take pictures worth the statue.
Fun fact: The fight scenes were shot in reverse order, from final round to opening because it was easier for the FX crew to remove the fight makeup between rounds than to add it. They started off all beaten up then ended all clean and beautiful.
Yeah, but the biggest insult is the fact that people associate that statue of actor as representing Philadelphia when it comes to boxing. The people of Louisville would never put a statue of an actor in a place of honor over Muhammed Ali.
It's quite the dramatic character masterpiece enrobed as a boxing film. Adrian, Paulie, and even Mickey, add so much to the story around Rocky and his journey toward defining himself. None of the rest are as well made and grounded as this one (it fully deserved winning Best Picture), but Rocky's journey is worth getting excited about.
The steps are the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. To this day people regularly run up them and jump around like Rocky! Even Google Maps has them listed as the "Rocky Steps".
I love Mick. He's exactly like my grandfarher was. Speaks the same, acts the same, sounds the same, even looks like him. He was a sailor and a ww2 vet. Looked and sounded rough but was actually warm inside. Btw, the actor who plays Paulie was actually a boxer in real life when he was younger.
Thanks for the info, I had no idea Burt Young have been a boxer, looks like he was also in the Marine Corps, funny how actors often plays characters that are the total opposite of who they are in real life 😉
I want to see isolated clips of you saying "I don't really like boxing" with a clip of you watching the big fight saying "hit him, hit him, hit him!" hahahahaha...sounds like a boxing fan to me haha! Great video as usual.

Rocky 2,3 and 4 get better and better!

7:43 "Skid Row" is an expression, originally sort of meaning like the poor area of town. In this context, it's an area where people can leave their things hanging on the wall out in the open. Which is where people leave their things when they aren't good enough boxers to actually have a locker in the gym where they can keep their things securely. So, it's the 'poor area' of the gym, so to speak.
To give you some context, when this movie came out, gas was considered EXTREMELY expensive at 60 cents/gallon. About 1/8th what it is now. So, multiply the numbers($40) by 8, ($320).
I saw this at the theater when I was about sixteen and it was amazing to see on the big screen. The country was preparing for its bicentennial birthday so there was a lot of red, white and blue in the air which is referenced in this movie. Great scripts are timeless and it's pretty cool to see how it still thrills people today seeing it for the first time.
Hi Biss! You just watched my favorite movie of all time. I was 10 when this movie came out. Over the years, I've watched this movie probably at least 50 times, more than any other movie. I think this character is the best in the history of cinema. He's physically strong, yet is also humble, which seems to be rare. He is simply, a good and caring person. Rocky isn't book smart, but he is street smart. I love how much he loves Adrian. I read that Sly (his friends call him Sly) originally thought about giving Rocky a little bit darker, meaner personality, to make Rocky more "realistic". Sadly I guess a lot, maybe even most, people, have a dark side to them. I'm SO glad he DIDN'T do that, because to me the Rocky we have represents the kind of person we should aspire to be - good. And, oh yeah, Rocky kicks butt! Side note: Butkus the dog was Sly's dog irl. Most likely he was named after Dick Butkus, an American Football player from the '60's. I'm old, but he played before my time. He was my Dad's favorite player. He said NOBODY hit as hard as Butkus. I've seen interviews of players admitting they were scared of him. Anyway the important part here is, Sly was so broke right before Rocky, he couldn't afford to keep Butkus the dog. The happy ending is after Rocky was made, Sly bought Butkus back.
The fact that Apollo wins is incidental. Rocky achieved his goal of simply going the distance. Even Apollo wasn’t a true “bad guy” as he is a descent man whose biggest sin is he went into the fight having no respect for Rocky as a fighter. He learned very quickly that it would be a hard fight.
Rocky is one of the best characters in cinema history. Such a great guy and role model. His whole progression through the movies is fantastic and his relationship with Adrian throughout is perfect.
I've watched several women react to Rocky and most have said they don't care for boxing movies. By the end, they're screaming "hit him, beat him, kill him !!!" 😂
Biscute, I loved that you enjoyed this so much. Rocky & Adrian are the best. 💕 And Mick the trainer cracks me up! Rocky 5 is the weakest of the series, but 1-4 are all really quite good. The last one though, Balboa (Rocky 6), is actually my favorite. It's a very satisfying ending to the whole long tale. 🙂 You did a great job with this reaction. Well done!
Every time you hum "You Can Leave Your Hat On" when someone takes off their clothes, it makes me think of the movie "The Full Monty". It's a good flick you should do. It's an often overlooked gem (especially for one of the rare comedies to ever get a Best Picture nomination from the Oscars), and so far, it seems that only one other channel has ever reacted to it.
1:23. Luckily for you Rocky is a love story. Vasoline reduces the chance that a cut will occur when hit in that area because it creates a slippery barrier between the glove and the skin.
This has been quite possibly my favorite movie. I can only think of a few other movies that I like as well (Chariots of Fire, Jeremiah Johnson, The Mission to name a few).
Butkus was actually Sly's dog. Even though he did small roles in other movies back in the 70's (plus a porno movie and I'm not kidding), he still wasn't a rich man and he wasn't that well known yet, in fact he was so broke that he had to sell Buttkus just so he could get money (I think it was because he had become a father and he was trying to take care of his family). But when he sold the script to Rocky (in which he wrote it in only 3 days) and got to play the lead role (originally the studio wanted a more famous name & Ryan O'Neal from Love Story and Barry Lyndon was considered, but Sly demanded either he played the lead role or they wouldn't get his script), he used the money to buy Butkus back and he put him in the movie. Sly also owns those turtles and I heard that those turtles are still alive (but I'm not sure If still alive today) He doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving because he's Italian (American Italian), it's because he doesn't have anybody to celebrate it with so for him it's just a regular day. Adrian is shy and has low self esteem, she's basically the ugly duckling, but she comes out of her shell when she's with Rocky and her confidence grows as well. Yes, you're thinking about the army poster of Uncle Sam pointing at the person saying "I WANT YOU!" to join the U.S. Army.
Of course. This is genuinely good movie, unlike "Exorcist" that is just blind nostalgia. It was great back then, but it is badly outdated. People are not scared anymore like they used to, so weak horror movies do not work anymore. Sorry, but makers of Exorcist should have done a better job to make the movie stand the test of time
Great reaction. To me this will always be Stallones greatest acting job, followed by Rambo. Instead of just being straight action movies he puts heart and soul in both of them and you Sympathize and empathize with them. FYI Stallone kept the turtle's Cuff and Link and still has them (they are now 48 years old) and they make an appearance in Creed 2.
Miss Bisscute I love your reaction to Rocky especially during the fight. the "hit him back" was so cute and lovely 💓💓💓💓. It is an iconic and Oscar-winning movie, hopefully you can react to the rest of the franchise, Rocky III is great and Rocky IV has become a classic due to its theme USA vs. Soviet Union. For the next Halloween suggestions: The lost Boys (a classic from the 80's) and more recent: 1984. I think you'll like them.
The vaseline on the eyes is to help ease/reduce/prevent cuts. The lubrication helps the glove to keep steady movement over your skin as opposed to the glove material gripping and tearing flesh (this is still less likely than with the horrific tearing of bare knuckles, but still). Worst of all, these cuts in combat sports sometimes might be indicative of the bone under being broken -- which could mean going blind. Basically, its so the fight can go longer and remain interesting by reducing smaller cuts -- if there's blood, it's usually because it was earned (in a morbid sense).
2:05 Eyebrow arch or arch of the eyebrows Your day will be enlightened watching the other Rocky movies, at least until Rocky 4, keep watching 😉 PS : Love your accent.
Don't let the negatives weigh you down, Biss. People watch these for your reaction, not so you cdn react like you believe we want you to. Yes, you won't like everything. And that's perfectly fine. There wil be movies you like some viewers can't stand, and instead of just moving on, they will feel compelled to rant about your choice. Never forget this is your channel, we are visitors and should be courteous visitors. We visit for you, to see you react. Don't ever be fake. You are a lovely person with a very charming personality, and the only person on this planet you ever need to change for is yourself. If someone gets negative, there are other channels they can watch instead. Be you.
You don't think too much about what you plan to say, you say what's in your heart at that moment... That's a Reaction, and it's beautiful! I REALLY hope you'll Continue with this Rocky Series for at least 3 more... I promise you won't be disappointed! WE KNEW about Germs and the Dangers some foods may present... But we exposed ourselves to these potential dangers to build a Natural Immunity to them. That's why today's viruses pose much more of a Danger... No one has any immunity other than getting shots (which makes Drug Companies alot richer). That lack of immunity extends towards many other things (like our Language)... People can't take a joke or are "hurt" by something we would've laughed at 30 years ago. That's also why most movies "couldn't be made today".
Paulie is the heart and soul of the entire Rocky series of films. The series tells the story of Paulie's redemption from being a total degenerate p.o.s, to slightly less of a total degenerate p.o.s.
He’s definitely not the heart and soul, but he does help make Rocky seem like a genuine character coming from poverty and a hard life. Many people who don’t have a lot and come from poverty have close people in their life who are toxic but they have their own way to deal with them.
he is a troubled character, that hates himself, and lets it out on the world... he always hurts my soul... not by his actions, but for what he is... and he has a great character arc over all movies...
@@DrFeelgood1127 yeah... well it was only meant as a joke. The serious side is that the Paulie character is there to show what is special about Rocky. Paulie and Rocky come from the same streets, experiences, environment etc. Paulie is what Rocky could easily have been had he not had something special inside. To go a bit further.... Adrian had this as well however the environment they both grew up in kind of held them down with nobody believing in them. The found the support they needed in each other and their story is one of them both blossoming due to the love and support they give and get from each other.
Rocky doesnt celebrate Thanksgiving because hes poor and doesnt have family, not cause hes Italian. Everyone from the US was an immigrant at some point, not to mention Italians "discovered" America.
Haha! Have never seen a better reaction to Rocky! And your right it's more a love story than about boxing. Have watched you from the start and am loving your reactions more and more.
40:30 - Yes, all boxers & MMA fighters put Vaseline on their faces to keep themselves from getting cut when they are punched. But they no longer allow trainers to apply it back stage. Back in the day, trainers could apply Vaseline on boxers themselves. These days, however, you will see that the fighters have to come into the arena "completely dry" and Vaseline is applied by an "official". That's because some trainers applied far too much Vaseline giving their fighters an unfair advantage. Now, both fighters will be given an equal amount.
Butkus was actually his dog and he had to sell it prior to the movie coming out cause he had no money to feed the dog or himself. After/during the movie he bought it back for 14k which was a lot of money. Those are Stallone words.
Just for reference on some of your questions. In 1975, the drinking age ( at least in Tennessee ) was 18 years of age. The Vaseline helps the glove of the opponent's slip off your face a little easier without breaking the skin. Back in the day, gloves were made of leather and leather against skin rips and tears because of the friction. An open cut creates problems for fighters and if bad enough, can end a fight. One of the stories around Hollywood was , the dog ( Butkus ) belonged to Stallone and since he wrote and starred in this movie , he was footing much of the money to get it made and released.....the story is, he had to sell his dog to help raise money and later bought the dog back after the movie was a success. The 40 dollars he made early in the movie, while it was a fair bit of money in the 70's , it was nothing compared to what he did to earn it. We ( as teens ) during the summer would haul hay in the fields for farmers for 3 to 5 cents a bale of hay, meaning lifting and stacking hay bales on a truck, then unloading it into a barn , 600 bales came out to $18 to $30 pay for a day or hard work. That $10 payment to get on the ice rink was insane.. the Zamboni ( the ice cleaning/ smoothing vehicle ) driver was just trying to scare him off with that price. PS. for the Rocky franchise.... Rocky 1 through 4 are pretty good..after that things get muddy at best ( in my opinion ).
Keep in mind that this is an exhibition bout which means no title belt is being fought over... Most exhibition bouts are 10 rounds to 15 rounds.. Title matches, are topically longer.
The fight went to the "cards" as they call it. Three neutral judges sit ringside and watch the entire fight and score each round separately on a scale of 1-10 for each fighter. If one fighter does better in a round, he gets a 10 and the other gets a 9. This is automatic as long as neither gets knocked down. Rounds can be tied as well. If one fighter gets knocked down, he gets a point deducted from that round's score, likely resulting in a 10-8 round. Every knockdown results in a point deduction. Fouls (hitting below the belt, biting, ect...) can also result in a point deduction. A knockdown, foul and knockout is declared solely by the referee. The judges make their score based on what they see in the ring, and what the referee declares. At the end of the fight they add up the score and that determines the winner. There can also be a tie where one judge scores for one fighter, another scores for the other fighter and the third scores it a tie. It's possible to have all three judges score a tie, although I'm not aware of that ever happening. In this case, Creed won by split decision, meaning that of the three judges, two scored for Creed and one scored for Rocky. This is an excellent result for the massive underdog. A score like this against the undefeated champ will result in at least one more big fight with a very good payday, likely a rematch with Creed, despite what Creed said at the end of the fight. If not Creed, then a match will be set with one of the other top contenders for very good money. Rocky's next fight will be highly anticipated by the boxing fans. In fact, there would likely be much more anticipation for his next fight to see if he's the real deal, or a flash in the pan. Whoever he fights next would likely be fought in a good sized arena, televised, and some portion of all that money would go to Rocky whether he wins or loses. Winning would garner him a bigger check and more big fights, but losing would still be a significant payday for him. In other words, Rocky secured a big payday with this fight and likely set himself up for life.
Vaseline was for the glove slips. That way the glove doesn't stick which of cause can cause big cuts in the sensitive skin around the eyes, it was used for slipping blows
Stallone admitted that the character did not drink the raw eggs for protein. He has to have them raw because Rocky does not have gas for the stove to cook them. It was meant to show how broke he was financially, but that didn't come through in the movie. People assumed it was for training purposes..
17:50 "Can I ask you a question?" "Absolutely." "Why do you want to fight?" "'Cause I can't sing or dance." I mean, it's _funny,_ but has Rocky ever _tried_ to dance? Because as I understand it, _fight_ training and _dance_ training have a lot of _crossover._ People who tend to be good at _one_ tend to be good at the _other._
I get goose bumps at the same time of the movie as you did & I've seen this like 100x. But I also got goose bumps when you let your hair down and went off on your final rant. Great reaction!
ha your still young as , life starts to get interesting when you hit forty ask your mum.Genuine reactions is what its all about ,you be you Miss Biss you are a real Taonga (treasure)much love to you and your family
I remember when this movie came out. I was surprised when you said your mother was born about that time. Two of my kids are older than that. Now I feel old. I do love watching your reactions. You were throwing punches and rooting for Rocky.
Is Rocky a movie about love or boxing ??
Love❤
Absolutely love!
Sylvester Stallone himself says its not a boxing movie, its a love story.
Love story

Your answer nailed it Scott.
By *far* the biggest surprise in the movie is Tony giving him so much money with no strings attached

Sly also owns those turtles and I heard that those turtles are still alive (but I'm not sure If still alive today)
He doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving because he's Italian (American Italian), it's because he doesn't have anybody to celebrate it with so for him it's just a regular day.
Army.
I hope you liked it. Interested to hear your thoughts on this movie. As others will say. If you did enjoy it. The entire series is worth a watch.
Of course. This is genuinely good movie, unlike "Exorcist" that is just blind nostalgia. It was great back then, but it is badly outdated. People are not scared anymore like they used to, so weak horror movies do not work anymore. Sorry, but makers of Exorcist should have done a better job to make the movie stand the test of time
@@milannesic5718 exorcist was about authentic evil which only believers can understand. There are few believers left now.
"I've never had Thanksgiving dinner"
That makes sense if you're not American. 😉
Frozen Turkey usually has to be special ordered in Europe
Great reaction. To me this will always be Stallones greatest acting job, followed by Rambo. Instead of just being straight action movies he puts heart and soul in both of them and you Sympathize and empathize with them.
FYI Stallone kept the turtle's Cuff and Link and still has them (they are now 48 years old) and they make an appearance in Creed 2.
I throw Copland up with this movie for his acting!
Rocky said that this is a “love story “!!❤
Miss Bisscute I love your reaction to Rocky especially during the fight. the "hit him back" was so cute and lovely 💓💓💓💓. It is an iconic and Oscar-winning movie, hopefully you can react to the rest of the franchise, Rocky III is great and Rocky IV has become a classic due to its theme USA vs. Soviet Union. For the next Halloween suggestions: The lost Boys (a classic from the 80's) and more recent: 1984. I think you'll like them.
The Rocky movies are some of my favorite movies of all time!
This was a great reaction! I hope you watch them all!😊
Adrian was also The Godfather’s daughter. Actress Talia Shire is director Francis Ford Coppola’s sister.
@BissFlix if you want, we can setup a fund for you to come to the United States during the Holidays so you can experience eating a Turkey..
I've watched a lot of reactions to this movie. You're the first to note that he takes his off his hat when she comes out of the other room.

Your day will be enlightened watching the other Rocky movies, at least until Rocky 4, keep watching 😉
PS : Love your accent.
Be you.
You need to watch Rocky 2, its just as good...great reaction!
That's also why most movies "couldn't be made today".
you're going to love rocky 2 , one of my all time fav films
Paulie is the heart and soul of the entire Rocky series of films.
The series tells the story of Paulie's redemption from being a total degenerate p.o.s, to slightly less of a total degenerate p.o.s.
He’s definitely not the heart and soul, but he does help make Rocky seem like a genuine character coming from poverty and a hard life. Many people who don’t have a lot and come from poverty have close people in their life who are toxic but they have their own way to deal with them.
🤣
he is a troubled character, that hates himself, and lets it out on the world... he always hurts my soul... not by his actions, but for what he is... and he has a great character arc over all movies...
@@Metzwerg74 agreed!! The characters were so well written and I highly suspect that Stallone knew people very much like the characters he wrote.
The dog is called Butkus. He is named for Dick Butkus, a famous American Football player in the early 1970s.
Un clasico del cine ❤
cine-ma. Si dice "Cinema"
Como sea
@@juanparrales7718 ops, i was thinking you are italian. My bad.
Lo que digad
Rocky's boss also played Willie Cici in the Godfather.
Rocky doesnt celebrate Thanksgiving because hes poor and doesnt have family, not cause hes Italian. Everyone from the US was an immigrant at some point, not to mention Italians "discovered" America.
ROFL For someone who doesn't like boxing, you sure get excited about the fight scenes.
Sylvester Stallone always says the original Rocky is a love story... that has some boxing.
Vaseline under the eyes or elsewhere on the face is to help prevent cuts. Rocky 2 is really like Rocky part 2. Don't miss it.
I’m so glad that you enjoyed the movie and I ❤your honesty✨💛Have a Very Nice Day😉❣️
Haha! Have never seen a better reaction to Rocky! And your right it's more a love story than about boxing. Have watched you from the start and am loving your reactions more and more.
Dick Butkus was a famous American football player just before this movie was made, what I assume the dog was named after
40:30 - Yes, all boxers & MMA fighters put Vaseline on their faces to keep themselves from getting cut when they are punched.
THE MAN ROCKY WORKD FOR AS A "COLLECTOR" EARLY IN THE MOVIE LATER PLAYS HIS COP BOSS IN THE STALLONE THRILLER "NIGHTHAWKS".
Butkus was actually his dog and he had to sell it prior to the movie coming out cause he had no money to feed the dog or himself. After/during the movie he bought it back for 14k which was a lot of money. Those are Stallone words.
One thing the start of the film does is establish that Rocky is not a dedicated athlete. He smokes and drinks and doesn't exercise much.
FYI, Butkus was named after the American football player named Dick Butkus.
Biss before the movie - I really don't like boxing.
Biss during the movie- Hit him, hit him! Go for the kidneys! Hit him in the ribs! HIT HIM!!!
You gotta keep going. Rocky 2 was the first one I saw. This really sets the stage for their relationship.
2:10: I'm not even a natve English speaker, but the term you were looking for is "The Ocular Bone".
Stallone admitted that the character did not drink the raw eggs for protein. He has to have them raw because Rocky does not have gas for the stove to cook them. It was meant to show how broke he was financially, but that didn't come through in the movie. People assumed it was for training purposes..
YES FINALLY ROCKY AND NEXT *RAMBO*
Your going to love them all
17:50 "Can I ask you a question?"
"Absolutely."
"Why do you want to fight?"
"'Cause I can't sing or dance."
I mean, it's _funny,_ but has Rocky ever _tried_ to dance? Because as I understand it, _fight_ training and _dance_ training have a lot of _crossover._ People who tend to be good at _one_ tend to be good at the _other._
I get goose bumps at the same time of the movie as you did & I've seen this like 100x. But I also got goose bumps when you let your hair down and went off on your final rant. Great reaction!
Thank you so much
41:58. Uncle Sam. Was of posters in the US in the forties to get guys to enlist in the military.
I'm glad you liked this movie, loved your reaction. This Franchise is Timeless
i enjoyed watching your reaction and i clicked on the thumbs up button
ha your still young as , life starts to get interesting when you hit forty ask your mum.Genuine reactions is what its all about ,you be you Miss Biss you are a real Taonga (treasure)much love to you and your family
At the time of the filming of this movie, the legal drinking age was 18 years old. It was changed in the early 80’s.
Outstanding reaction video! You have a very pleasant voice 🙂
I remember when this movie came out. I was surprised when you said your mother was born about that time. Two of my kids are older than that. Now I feel old. I do love watching your reactions. You were throwing punches and rooting for Rocky.
The actor who played Paulie, Burt Young, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and boxed while serving, 32 wins to 2 losses with 26 knockouts.
Oh well Thats an interesting fact
