    More importantly:
    1) Notify multiple people of your route and return date
    2) Get a satellite phone if you won't have cell service
    3) Consider carrying a weapon if you're traveling alone or will be very far from civilization

    • @karenneill9109
      @karenneill9109 Год назад +23

      Excellent! I prefer a multi tool over a weapon, a knife alone requires a lot more hand strength, and I have weak hands.
      Also, even if you think you’ll have cell service, bring a paper map (or at least download a map to your cell). The smallest canyon or hill can cut service. I live in North Vancouver BC. We go from suburb to wilderness is no time at all. 500 m from the parking lot (half a mile), and you lose cell service. You’re practically still within shouting distance, and you go from 5 bars to zero.
      One surprising thing I learned recently… Our local Search and Rescue (which does several rescues a week), says their number one reason people get stuck is the light cuts on them, so their number one item to bring on a hike is a flashlight. Especially if you’re in the forest or the mountains (we have both here), it can get dark suddenly, much earlier than you expect. Even if you’re on a trail, once it’s dark, that trail goes away. Surprisingly, they recommend it above good footwear, a map, a jacket, etc. It’s literally the top of their list.

    • @joecexe1
      @joecexe1 Год назад +5

      @@nikki1400 unless you live in a country with limited acess to clean water, why isnt hydrating realistic for most people? Not tryna argue, genuinly curious

    • @nikki1400
      @nikki1400 Год назад +8

      @@joecexe1 it's not an access issue, it's just that most people are chronically dehydrated as per their lifestyle. So like, being extra about it 3 days before a hike is very doable because you're aware and thinking about it, with hydrating being a specific goal/task on your mind. Every other day is just a day with no hike in site, and thus no reason to be specifically focused on drinking a lot. In a nutshell it's easier to reach a goal/do the thing when in preparation for a specific event than it is to do the thing day in and day out just because.

    • @dhandley8893
      @dhandley8893 Год назад +1

      These are great! The hydrating thing is key as dehydration happens slowly and people think that if you feel "dry" you're starting to need water. Actually, if you can feel it, you're past that point. It affects decision making and so much. And coming back from a deficit takes longer and more water than one thinks. Ambient moisture and humidity in the air needs to be considered as well. Grand Canyon and desert hiker

    Also double layers of wool socks. Even if you are going somewhere super hot.
    Sound crazy but helps so much against blisters and sweat.
    It can be super thin Marino wool mixed with other materials made to be running socks. The important part is just that there is two layers and it’s to a high degree made of wool.
    You get blisters from friction. And those double layers of socks basically removes all friction, as the socks will just rub against eachother.
    Also wool handles sweat a million times better then cotton, and the first layer is able to stay pretty dry by wicking away it to the second layer.
    I regularly got the tip from other hikers and people who had done basic training in the army.
    So for one hike I decided to pack two pairs and give it a go, and also one pair of my regular socks, and see if it worked out or not.
    It was a hit summer hike. But I quickly became a convert. Worked wonders.
    Haven’t had a blister while hiking since. I used to get them pretty regularly. I still change socks while hiking to make sure the feet get to breath and check that the feet aren’t getting wet. But the socks get a lot less wet now then they used to.
    Also smelled pretty decent after long hikes, especially compared to say sports socks that are just made synthetic materials.
