    I LOVE these! And that little comment you made is worthy of being in a philosophy text: “Making is kind of thinking, When you make something you enter into a kind of conversation with the world. And that conversation going somewhere worthwhile has less to do with the validity of the idea you start with and more to do with keeping that conversation going.” Brilliant!

    I went researching in norwegian and found that fish leather shoes (fiskeskinnsko) were connected primarily to the sea sámi, and mostly as decorative accents and not the whole shoe. Interestingly, because of leather shortages they were also made commercially by non-sámi shoemakers during german occupation

    Its maybe culturally distant from what you were aiming at, but you might still be pleasantly surprised to know that there are mentions and even findings of fish leather items used by Mongolians during 13 - 14th century. For instance, the 13th century Mongolian Khagan, Kublai Khan, supposedly ordered fish-skin slippers from Korea. There is a very beautiful fish skin purse discovered in Čonot Uul in western Mongolia. Hope you find this useful. Your poulaines turned out great! :)

    • @making.history
      @making.history  3 года назад +1

      Oh thank you! I had seen the purse but the rest is news to me and very appreciated. I'm actually starting on some research to do with 14th century Mongolia for non-fish reasons, so thank yoooou!

      Came across this vid about a year after your comment. You both might be pleasantly surprised that in Iceland, fish leather of various colours is still used, to make bags and/or small accessories. For bags, it's not the main construction material, instead, it's used as an accent of sorts. I believe a single local family keeps this uncommon kind of leathercraft alive. Been there in 2016/2017 and the bags could be a practical souvenir or, at the very least, a nice talking point.

    I probably didn’t comment on your other videos but I wanted to say I enjoy them all a LOT. Orc cod piece was priceless and this entire project is delightful, as is your delivery. And that bit about making as a conversation is great, too, thanks art school! And thank YOU for your vids and your humorous ways and delivery.

    You know, typing as an occasional artist model & muddling mixed-media human to former art-school grad, if you come up with a strong enough through-line you could build up something you could exhibit at the closest artist-run gallery. Interactive or performative or objects on pedestals. And probably qualify for Can Cow, um I mean Canada Council travel or study or exhibition grants. Just sayin'... SAW Gallery just finished up an exhibit that was part of a science conference. Great video. I love your idea of creating an object is creating a conversation with the wider world.

    I believe chicken skin shoes were common in Iceland. They were worn indoors with sheep fleece inside for warmth, or knitted ‘inners’ when knitting became a ‘thing’. Eel skin was used as hinges for gates, as I believe it is very weatherproof.

    • @making.history
      @making.history  2 года назад +1

      oh that's so cool! I'd never heard that.
      Yeah, eel skin has been used for a ton of weird things! I think I heard it's also because when it fails, it tends to split lengthwise rather than snap. Or something. Skin is cool.

    Why not fishleather? Europe 1940s, shoes were made of fishleather (the common leather types went in to the war effort). I have a pair (bought in an antique shop). And they are really fancy. :)
