Strange World is my favorite song from in my opinion one of the greatest debut albums ever recorded, we could see back in 1980 that Iron Maiden were something very special.
So glad you enjoyed this! This is such an emotional song for many, myself included. No one is really sure what the meaning is as it seems to have a different one for everyone. The "girls drinking plasma wine" had some thinking vampires, but I don't really agree. To me, it almost seems like an afterlife. He says... "Here I am, I'm not really there" followed by "Smiling faces ever so rare" which makes me think maybe a funeral. Either way it is a beautiful song. Thank you so much for checking it out! Also, apologies for any typos as I am on my phone. We have been without TV and Internet since yesterday and just got the electricity back on about an hour ago. Take care and thanks again!
It is about vampirism. The song even merges in from the instrumental 'Transylvania' making them both one full track. 'Living here, you'll never grow old'.
Personally I don't see any link to vampirism. My interpretation is that of someone who has a vision or experience of being taken by aliens into their shapeship or other world, where all is peace. Or a religious experience of some sort. Or even a drugs initiated experience.
Great observation! I feel that its only the fans of Maiden that really understand the importance of Steve Harris and the bass in their music. Reactors often miss it unless they are very familiar with Iron Maiden in general.
Great reaction. A fave Iron Maiden song of mine. Very melodic and atmospheric. Great playing from the band and an ace vocal from Paul DiAnno. Some great guitar playing from the unfairly maligned and forgotten Dennis Stratton on the debut album too.
The debut Iron Maiden album has always been my favorite and this song is one of my all time favorites. They are an entirely different band with the original singer.
At school I had a teacher who I have great respect for and we're still friends today. He went against the headmaster's orders and formed a rock club every thursday lunch time and also organised tickets to go watching Iron Maiden on their first ever headline tour
What a fantastic and (unfortunately) obscure Maiden sing to react to. Loved seeing you experience it. Thanks for reaching deep into the album for this one!
This is a black blues dream like Led Zeppelin jams. It’s a European style but it’s blues from down south. It’s a funky, jam, European style like Led Zeppelin, funky, London, funky sound from the south beautiful song
Paul DiAnno is the singer on the frist two Maiden Albums. Bruce sings from the 3rd album on. Steve Harris is the bass player and the back bone of the beat
I just discovered your channel because of your King Diamond reactions, wich I absolutly love!To see you falling in love with my personal No1.:MAIDEN and a look in your Playlist list made me subscibe instantly!! UP THE IRONS!!!
Prior to this song on the album, there is a track titled ''Transylvania'' which I consider one of the best instrumentals in the entire Iron Maiden discography, and transition with Strange World is incredible. So that you have it in consideration, the next time you listen to this album again. Greetings!
Let's keep in mind that Strange World it's in junction with Transylvania. I believe the lyrics and the song could be describing the visions of a person in a strange world of vampires. Girls drinking plasma wine, the ambient of the music, the lyrics. If you listen to the song Transylvania and Strange World you'll be able to relate the sensation this song produces.
Hey!, I love this song.. Have you heard Ozzy Osbourne's Diary of a Madman Album? Particularly the songs You can't kill rock and Roll, SATO, Tonight, and the self titled Diary of a Madman songs? They give you that same "floating above a dark graveyard" out of body emotional feel, but such amazing songs. I stare at the album cover while listening to it, gives me the creeps!🤣 There is also Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" which is another "floating in space", formidable but amazing music! All the best, Nick UK, XX
Sounds to me like the song was a small peek into not a dream or fiction but something that had happened to someone. Because it is too specific but also cryptic - as in so much important information is left out - to be anything else. Just my thoughts anyway 😋
A false sense of peace trying to penetrate the deepest depths of my soul. Pushing, coming in waves. But no matter how hard it tries, I'll never be convinced of the strange world being home. Close to the real thing, but lacking the original stamp from the first maker of my first home. It all looks right, fells, and even tastes right. Yet within me is a certainty that this isn't real, it's a strange world.. Just a couple of thoughts that came from hearing and reading what the song had to say. Just a few days ago I was playing some Paul Di Anno, looking back at his contribution to Iron Maiden, and saw his solo rendition of 'Wrath child', another song from this album, and the poor chap isn't a well man. Wheel chair bound, unhappy, and a sorry sight to see compared to what he was in the 80s. All very sad. For a 1st album, this was a brilliant offering, so very well thought out, all songs had real meaning, and substance. As well loved as Bruce Dickenson is, I feel that he took the band into an over commercial entity that shot Maiden into super stardom, and I think that had an effect on the output from them, and may well have side stepped them from these earlier routes. Who knows? Nice one Randi. I'd happily recommend both Di Anno, Maiden albums track at a time, but that's me fighting the feeling of getting older... LOL Be well. TTFN
Well said Graham! This first album always seemed a bit more "hard punk" than the metal we would soon get from Iron Maiden. Like you said, who really knows what would have happened if Di'Anno had remained with the band. Would they have become one of the greatest metal bands of all time, or would they have remained a hybrid of punk and hard rock? I guess we'll never know but one thing is for certain... Despite all the troubles that Paul had in the very early days of Maiden, and despite all the amazing greatness that Bruce brought us afterwards... Paul Di'Anno could sing!! While I know the long time Maiden fans like you and I have always known this, I feel it gets overlooked by the newer and/or younger fans. I dare say that for the musical style that Iron Maiden was doing on the first 2 albums, no one could have done a better job than Paul. Here's hoping that things might turn around for him, and here's hoping that Bruce and Maiden continue their greatness as well! Take care, my friend!!
Actually it wasn't Bruce, but Steve who adapted the style of the band exactly the way he wanted it to be. After the already great success of the first two albums, it was clear to him that Paul wouldn't have fitted into this concept. With the 'Number of the beast' album he wanted to filter out the last remaining punk elements that could still be felt on the first ones, and deliver pure heavy metal. The fact that Paul has more of a punky sound and that they could now fill the really big halls came together ,with the plan to just conquer the world! And for that, a far more professional and trained singer was needed. Bruce didn't participate in this development, but was simply the last missing ingredient for Harris to put his plan into action.Harris told this once in an interview this way. I love the first two albums too and I will always prefer to listen to the songs with Paul instead of live versions with Bruce! Nevertheless, the decision to part with him at this time was the right one!
Criminally underrated song
Death row! 😅

An underrated gem beautifully sung and beautifully played. And those 2 stunning solos with the bass underlying it all its perfection

great song, shows that maiden have such a range in their songs
Great freakin song. Not bad for their first album. Legendary.
some people say that the lyrics is about to become a vampire

Agreed its a lost treasure both it and Strange World go well together on the track listing
This is such a captivating tune by IM. I think lyrics refer to some kind of vampire-ish world.
surrealistic escape from reality this song makes me happy and brings real my reality being alone and happy.
