Every guitar player should know 5 songs. You should be able to perform these songs to the best of your ability and they should highlight your strengths. These are songs that everybody should know immediately, unless you write your own songs. If you have originals, you should always make sure that at least one is in the set. Here are my five songs. The Beatles, Tom Petty, Allman Brothers, Van Morrison, and one of my own. I hope you enjoy it.

Short term memory loss from a heart attack is what got me playing again!
I was reticent about keeping that part in there for that very reason Hopefully people will see the lighter side of it. I've tried not to be too sarcastic on here because my sarcasm tends to be very dry and my delivery is very monotone so people take. It the wrong way mark
I sincerely appreciate the amazing support you've given the channel
Another home run. The opening section on "Crippling Affliction" is priceless!
It's probably going to be another double
Space Hippie is the standout for me.
Hey Andhe. I sincerely appreciate that thanks for taking the time to watch and to comment. I'm grateful for your time take care stay safe and be well mark
Great video. Space Hippie rocks!
Hey dennis i'm glad you enjoyed the original As always thanks so much for the amazing support take care and enjoy the rest of your week mark
Another one to enjoy listening to again Mark 🎸🎸🎸🙂🙂🙂
Sandra You are definitely the biggest eight minute axe fan I am so grateful for your time and enthusiasm this Is the hardest job i've ever had but but people like you make it worth it. Mark
the beginning is too funny. great video
Yes
Another kick ass video. LOVE the original
As always Much appreciated Clem
Love the choices!
Hey Michael thanks so much for taking time out of your day to join the live chat. I sincerely appreciate your time mark
The key to overcomming put on the spot shock. I was told ,is to practice someplace different every day. Such as, outside, in the kitchen, garage, livingroom, ect....and of cource profrom for others as much as possible.
Hey charles I didn't see the "on the" Before spot shock. I thought you were calling it spot shock. I'm gonna give you credit for it. That's an awesome name for a spot shock I love that. Thanks so much for checking out the video I sincerely appreciate your time. Enjoy the rest of your week and please be safe. Mark
Yep! I usually fall back on Helplessly Hoping, works every time! ;-)
That's a great one howard. and you have multiple parts you can sing. I hope that didn't come across as sarcastic. I meant it sincerely. Take care and be well mark
Another great video. Hate I missed the debut. You’re spot-on about the brain freeze and having a few in your hip pocket. Thanks!
Amanda and I were talking about brain freeze last night. I read an article about 7 ways to combat it, as I get it really bad when it does come on. I'm now equipped with multiple ways to fight it. Lol. Mark
Hi Blake, l was worried when I saw that you weren’t on chat, so it’s good to see that you are OK and that you caught up with the video later 🙂
@@sandrataylor51 Thank you. Life is controlling my schedule, not me! I miss the comments during the debuts. Hope to catch up soon.
I have a three-ring binder with songs I have practiced enough that I can do any of them at a moment's notice.
Hey Bob yeah I used to carry a list in my pocket. I want you to know when the piece you sent me arrives again many thanks mark
Big thumbs up! Glad I made the premiere this time. Good stuff once again Mark
Hey Christopher thanks for taking time out of your day to make the Premier. EI know Mondays aren't always easy for people. I just always seem to run into a snag That prevents a sunday upload. Take care be well and stay safe mark
Love the “crippling affliction” humor. 😂
I’d like to hear more of Space Hippie. Really catching tune. Keep including your original songs ❤
I remember that one!
Remind me to send you the full band version email me
Great video Mark love the t shirt
Lol. Thanks my friend.
Great job. I have forgotten so many songs I’ve covered.
II used to carry a list around in my pocket because nothing worked other than seeing the songs. I knew in print lol thanks so much for checking out the video. Please take care stay safe him be well mark
Love me some Space Hippy!! Awesome video!!
My voice text isn't working
All great choices and the advice was well appreciated.
You've Been such an amazing supporter of the channel and I sincerely appreciate it. I say that a lot but I mean it every time and I don't take. Other people's time lightly have a great rest your week Mark
its a damn good thing you were sitting down in the shots without a rok-lok.
Nice
Really great job playing, singing, and mixing the video! Enjoying your channel and the 12 string content!
Good list
He's zach. I'm using voice text right now and this is my fourth attempt at writing something coherent to you l o l mark
@@8MinuteAxe I can relate as sometimes I use voice text sometimes when my fingers get tired
Excellent quality video as usual Mark
Excellent Advice!
Love the shirt!
Rock on
Excellent Mark!!!
As always much appreciated tom
Thanks for some new song ideas Mark! I'm gonna get started on Space Hippie asap.
You really are an inspiration to me and so many others. Thanks for these great videos.
Indeed! Keep up the good work mark! 🎸🤘😎
You sounded fantastic!
Great work Mark, that was awesome man 😀🤘🎵🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Another great video Mark.
Shoot me an email when you have a few. I want to tell you about something. I hope you're well.
Sounds great! I play most of these classics!
Hey Matt. That's awesome. I really appreciate you taking the time to check out the video. Enjoy the rest of your week and take care. Mark
Whipping Post rocked! Like the shirt in the intro. Good things to come.
Excellent job, Mark!
I'm glad you enjoyed this one Dave.
@8MinuteAxe I truly like them all, but enjoyed this one a little more!
Great video Mark, really enjoyed space hippie. Recently came upon your channel & subscribed, enjoy your videos. Thanks ☮️
another nice video Mark!
Congrats my friend this is only the fifth time out of twenty five that a friend of the channel has won
@@8MinuteAxe Thanks again Mark! I will endeavor to bring more subscribers to your site for the excellent content!
@@8MinuteAxe Mark, did you get my address via email?
You had me at Whipping Post great acoustic cover.
Awesome Mark. So right about freeze up. Even when I am humbly and quietly trying a guitar at my local shop or L and M.. if I feel like driving a ways.... I have a hard time figuring out what to stumble through. Great info.... and performance.✌.
jeezo, mark, i got chills down my backbone when you were playing free-fallin' - fantastic work, my friend! and haha, where was the 12 string on norwegian wood 😉? fortunately, as i am just learning, i don't yet have 5 songs under my belt, so i can't choke when it comes to requests! but don't worry - i will haha 🙃! thanks again for your great content - love from canada!
You know what. Then just have 5 parts of songs down and play them to the best of your ability. That's what I did for years when I was learning. Thanks so much for checking out the video. Please take care and have a great week mark
Great piece of advice at the end! Don't miss that, folks! :)
thanks brother.
Your hints are excellent! I only play a 12 string guitar because the sound is so rich.
If solo almost always a 12 string
This was a fun one and mostly new songs for me.
My preference of all 5 songs was the 12 string version, keep up the great vids, great information
Mark, I just discovered your channel a few days ago, just want you to know I'm really enjoying your work. Thanks and keep it up.
Blue shirt!
Dis blue
Mark, another excellent video. Good advice at the end, I have felt forced a few times to play songs I am not completely comfortable with. By and large I regretted it or I felt as though it did not showcase my best effort. In addition, I did take my Taylor 12 string to the local luthier at Hanover Strings here in Hanover NH. though less than a year old they looked it over and felt a set up was in order. They will adjust the neck/truss rod then determine if any other work is necessary. Thanks
Great job, Mark! :)
The video is doing well. If it dies after a few thousand views like most of my videos, I may prop it up with a new title #1 Affliction Affecting Guitar Players.
@@8MinuteAxe GAS? Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. Ya know there is a mathematical formula that reveals the optimum number of guitars in a guitarist's collection? It is n+1, where n is the number of guitars you already own! :)
Great video as usual, Petty sure has been played a few times when everything else failed to pop up ;)
Hey Peter. Thanks for always making time for the live chat. I know it's probably not very easy with the time difference but I'm very grateful. Please take care of me well. Mark
Great to see you back! Hope your feeling better. Well, you hit the nail on the head with this video. I hate that feeling...total brain freeze. I ask the person"What sort of songs do you like ?" and go from there. Sort of breaks the ICE!!!🤞🤞🤞🤞
Hey john. It's funny that you mentioned brain freeze. My wife and I were talking about brain freeze last night. I read an article about different ways to combat people. I get it terribly bad when I do get it. Thanks for the well wishes. Things are getting back on track Please take care and be well. Mark
Great job on your favorite 5 songs. I also liked the sound of the 12 string when you played the cover of Tom Petty's "Free Fallin."
Space Hippie has to be my favorite on the list. Not only cause it's yours Mark, but it really jams ! Plus every time I play this song, no matter where my handicap daughter is in the house. Once she hears the first few notes she's right next to me telling me to turn it up. All I can do is Crank It ! She even has the lyrics memorized. Thank You Mark ! Touching lives more ways the one buddy !
Rock on!! 🎸🤘😎
I'm glad you make videos !! I work days and can't join your live show !!! that's probably a good thing I am such a slow typer the show would be over before I got HI HOW ARE YOU DOING typed !!!!!
Mark I lost count holding my breath and passed out, I think Whipping Post might be my favorite cover that I've on the channel you really nailed it man!!! Party on Garth.
Very nice as always, Space Hippie was really good. You should try to slide more original's into the channel.
Free Fallin’. Classic. And damn good voice!
Good advice Mark, I know the feeling! Also, Whipping Post might be the best song of all time. Rock on! 🎸😎🤘
Super Whipping Post! ♥♥♥
Hey Mark Great to see you put this out today. My 5 include Norweigan wood, Substitute , Melissa, Alone again or ( By Love 1967) and my original "Your Lovely Eyes" all these songs have a bit of a Guitar tag along with chords so just one Guitar works out. Free Falling is my backup.
C'mon AL. You really think you need to provide info on Alone Again Or. Lol. I just performed Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale 2 weeks ago. Forever Changes gets a lot of fanfare. It's a great album, much better than the Moby Grape album (another album from 67 that gets a lot of underrated shout outs). The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus is my favorite deep album. Nothin to Hide, Street Worm, Animal Zoo, and Nature's Way are all exceptional. My friend from HS (grad 89) quoted Love in the yearbook. The snot has caked against my pants. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe It was for you audience not you. I Love" You Set the Scene : from Forever Changes. LOVE Should have been huge Arthur Lee wouldn't Tour outside of California at the time. Oh well I hope your feeling better Mark still looked slightly off kilter
Nice... I got the last 3. A few others that have usually been on my fingertips are The Boxer, Blackbird, and Time in a Bottle. The octave jump in free fallin' rocks, but I never quite know what to do with the double vocal part.
Also agree with your rule.
I really like the Free Falling. Very nice. Any recommendations for a good capo for a 12 string? First video I’ve heard you sing. Excellent voice.
Held my breath and did something kind. Also wondering why so many comments are talking about the 'crippling affliction' when you clearly said 'cruel affliction.' :)
Do you know that I actually thought a little bit before I kept that part. Some people are a little over the top and I didn't want to come across as insensitive to those that actually have crippling ailments. I finally determined that it was fine. I thought of the fact that most great comedy has some tragedy in it.I don't even note that applies. Lol. Thanks mark
Great pitch with your vocals buddy.. showing my age, haven't heard the first 2... Top tips at the end... and I'd add one... my rule was never play the same song twice in a night... so many great songs to choose from.
Great video, Mark. I think about this problem (of what to play) often. Not because I'm ever asked to play, but because I'd like to shock some of my family by actually being able to play a song they've heard (versus one of my own compositions, which they have never heard). 2 of yours are kinda on my list: Norwegian Wood and Free Falling. Thanks again, Mark.
Glad to see you’re getting over your flu. I could still detect a little bit in your voice. Despite that your voice sounded great. I’ve had that “playing paralysis” too in the past. I’m very much like that in guitar shops too. For some reason it’s intimidating!
Great choices Mark. Sadly, I have a baritone voice which rules out many of the tunes here. I usually end up playing Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson or Tom Waits. Note to self: I need a 12 string!
Hey joe don't say sadly about having a baratone I think being a child Of the eighties made me associate high singing with good singing. I would love to have a rich baritone or even to be able to sustain a few low notes. I have nothing down there Do the songs that work for you? If the capo doesn't bring it to a key where it doesn't Justice move on to something else. Thanks so much for checking out the video enjoy the rest of your week take care mark
Sing sound of silence with a 12 string and you would feel great.
Nice Taylor Mini !
If I am playing every day I usually have a song or two ready to go. If I skip a day or two my mind goes blank. Can always remember "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", the John Lennon tune which was one of my very first learned songs, about the time of the Punic Wars.
Mark, I just read Space Hippie is your original. Any chance of getting the full lyrics and chord shapes? I had a little trouble playing those clean on the upper frets. Great tune! I sent you an email.
Hey brother. Did you see my email? Did that help at all? I have a couple of different versions of the lyrics. I'm going to see if I can dig up the liner notes from the original CD single. Did you like the full length version? Hit me back with an email when you have time. It's hard to find threads on comments on here. Thanks so much for your interest. I used to get some requests on how to play it but it's been quite a while. We still feature it in our live show. The one we do each year now. The summer of 24 will be reunion # 3. Mark
I loved "Tied to the Whipping Post!" Hey, can you do a lesson on that one, just the way you play it? No pressure. You've got a lot going on. But I'd love that one, and I'd probably watch it a dozen times while I learned it! :)
Marty Music's version is lead electric guitar. So it is different. Same with Dave's Guitar Channel, and James James. The bottom guitar in Jeff Williams Guitar's video is a bit like your version. Ooh, the Noah Guthrie cover of this song is like yours! (That dude can sing!) Anyway, it looks like RUclips needs a tutorial the way you do it, man! :)
First I have to relearn it. LOL. That would be a good one to redo with a lesson attached. If I don't get to it in the next 60 days, please remind me. I will try to tab some of it when I get a moment as well.
check this one out. similar to mine. I think I borrowed the ascending line during the chorus from this version. ruclips.net/video/C0jDwegyNnw/видео.html&ab_channel=V%C3%ADtorBacalhau
similar to mine except this guy can actually sing...
First time viewer. Could not find that Space Hippie tune on iTunes. Is it an original? It’s a great tune!
Always play to your strengths😉🎶
Definitely good advice. My biggest challenge is learning entire songs, instead of just the hooks.
For sure, Richard. I don't think I knew an entire song in the first 4 years of playing. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. Take care and be well. Mark
Vocals are great. Very compressed tho? Auto tuner filter too if you dont mind me askin?
Hey man. Thanks so much for checking the video out. I really appreciate your time and thoughts (and kind words). Up until about 6 months ago I was still using cakewalk (stop laughing). I used ozone with it occasionally but the only vocal tuning had to be "unlocked" for $800. I switched to logic and it has vocal tuning. I used it on the chorus of free Fallin and the last note of each line on Norwegian Wood (notes are too low for my limited range). I don't really know how to apply it yet. Is that where you noticed it? I'm pretty sure where I applied it I cranked it all the way up. Lol. I figured my pitch is usually about 85% there, what's the point if I'm going to add effect and still sing out of key. I'm curious what you heard. I just figured out a few weeks ago that you cab not only change the pitch but you can add or subtract vibrato. If you ever hear me singing with vibrato you'll know it's been treated since I have none naturally. Have a great weekend and please take care. Mark
I waited to hear the obvious. Man, I'm a suscriber w/ the bell clicked, b/c you've had great tips for approaching 12-string, You're Beatles riffs were what turned my attention, but you never sent the Tab that I emailed a request for.
I don't mean this in a mean way, but is this channel about watching you perform, or learning guitar? You're very good at both, but I'm here to learn.
Hey Terry. I'm really sorry that I missed your email. I was in California at the NAMM show for a week and I've been digging myself out of a backlog of emails. When I get on my computer tomorrow am I'm going to send you a bunch of tabs. Take care. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe Thanks Mrj! Received w/ a gracious email reply if you haven't seen it yet. :)
Another point of praise. I really love how you keep your vids just as long as they need to be.
Some of these guys go on forever. :)
Space Hippie rocks. there's a vid of that whole song here somewhere isn't there?
Is an acoustic amp worth it? Or should I just plug my acoustic into my regular amp?
Hey Steve. About twenty people have asked me that question I'm being literal I don't have a good answer I do know that fifteen years ago when I was in guitar center and listening to Acoustic Amplifiers they sounded great but these days P a's are so good. It just doesn't seem worth it to buy an exclusively acoustic amp.
I have always loved Tom Petty and nobody ever talks about him or if I do they don’t know who the hell he is.
That first guitar is beautiful. Model?
I got the fever. And the only cure is more 9 Minute Axe.
Hey jeff. Did you just give me an extra axe?
@@8MinuteAxe 8 minutes . 9 minutes. Whatever it takes.
Who sings space hippie? Can’t seem to find it? What about a lesson on that song? Just read it is your original. GREAT TUNE! Where can I find your CD? Again you give a lesson on that one!
Allman Bros. Yes
So where’s the full video of Space Hippie?
I donate platelets every couple weeks, so that should count as a good deed. Way too old to hold my breath, but I did it anyway. At least I don't have to hold it for the entire 3x watching the vid. I need another twelve string!
12 string
I think most people prefer when I lip sync and don’t move my lips!
If i never played a song i couldn't sing i could only play instrumentals. My singing is abysmal
That's okay Martin. I honestly consider myself more of a singer than a guitar player but my singing isn't that great either. The one thing that holds people back is that for some reason People Don't practice it it needs to be practiced like any other instrument Thanks so much for checking out the video please take care of me well. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe yeah, I'm going to have to learn how to practice singing
@@8MinuteAxe oh, and thanks for the guitar lessons, very much appreciated

You’ve been too kind in your previous replies to me be considered a complete stranger.. but I watched three times and tried to hold my breath for 5 seconds ( But being a laryngectomy patient it’s hard to hold your breath with a wide open stoma)..LOL.. OK ???
At least I can enjoy your video, and not this lousy Braves/Cardinals game!
My Alma Mater just won our 5th national title. Thank God I'm a die-hard fan as my other favorite team is the Mets. Tough to be a Mets fan. Lol.
I'm just thrilled when the Salukis get an invite to the Dance. But to win it all? 5 times? Congratulations, Mark. The Huskies men's/women's programs are something to be very proud of. I watched the 2nd half. What a defense!
