    The Thing is a 2002 third-person shooter survival horror video game developed by Computer Artworks, published by Black Label Games, a publishing wing of Vivendi Universal Games, and distributed by Konami for Windows, Xbox and PlayStation 2. Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance versions were also planned, but both were cancelled early in development.
    Set as a sequel to John Carpenter's 1982 film of the same name, the story focuses on Captain Blake, a member of a U.S. Special Forces team sent to the Antarctic outpost featured in the film to determine what has happened to the research team. The game was endorsed by John Carpenter, who voices a character in an uncredited cameo.
    The Thing was a commercial success; selling over one million units worldwide across all platforms, and received generally positive reviews. A sequel was in the early stages of development, but was cancelled when Computer Artworks went into receivership in 2003.

    Nice to see a proper review of this game for once, so many people think this is a terrible game because of Spoony's video.
    But you must do Alien Resurrection on the PS1 sometime G.

      Larry Bundy Jr he was absolutely right though. I have played this game and I think it's worse than even what Spoony said. Especially on a console since the PC has a few other perks.

      I don't think the game is bad, but it seems to have aged somewhat. Personally, if I was going to make an interactive adaptation of a horror story based in paranoia, I wouldn't have made it a shooter; I'd have probably gone for something along the lines of a point-&-click puzzle/mystery/visual novel, taking into account how important the player character's interactions with the other characters would be to getting past obstacles while also being mindful of who you find yourself siding with, lest you find yourself cornered by the Thing. If I couldn't incorporate a random infection element into the game I'd probably give it a branching story, so the characters you find yourself siding with or suspecting will determine who gets infected & who makes it to end. But shooting the Thing works too.

      Larry Bundy Jr I loved this game. The ammo was abundant, yet there was tension, which is pretty hard to pull off. The controls are meant to be clunky, as it's a horror game.

    I really like The Thing game but the one aspect that always bugged me was the nature of the The Thing. In the game, it's played like a zombie virus, something you can be infected with and not know it.
    But in the movie, it's not like that. The Thing kills the original person and takes their form. It's a disguise. The alien knows it's an alien, it's just pretending to blend in.

    • @noop9k
      @noop9k 5 лет назад +1

      Critical Nobody Yes, he is praising this crappy game but doesn’t really understand that the thing is.

    • @jasonorriss
      @jasonorriss 5 лет назад +10

      Yes I also didn’t like that about the game. It was ok as a shooter but I don’t think the developers really understood what the Thing was.
      The Thing would assimilate you so it could assume your identity and work in secret. It would only burst out if it had been discovered, but in the game it was more like something that would gestate inside you and burst out once it had finished growing (like the chestburster in Alien)

    • @noop9k
      @noop9k 5 лет назад +4

      Jason Orriss Well, I even finished this game so yes, it is not THAT bad. Yet I was very angry about the fact that it took great source material, did a few things right, but they did not even understand the main subject of the game, completely wasting the potential. Was it so hard to read a short story? Yes, they added the blood tests, but you almost immediately understand they are fake. Also, as a shooter it was often boring, repetitive, frustrating. They were given top quality ingredients yet produced a barely playable shallow medocrity. Imagine if they really had werewolf-like politics going on in your team, with some members attempting to secretely murder other while you are not looking. Imagine blood tests having a chance to immediately cause a mini-boss fight. Imagine discovering sci-fi weapons and gadgets crafted by some of the things, etc etc.

    • @jasonorriss
      @jasonorriss 5 лет назад +3

      noop9k That would have been amazing. I think the game should have been set in one location (like the early Resident Evil games) and had a central cast of characters (about 10-12 of them).
      You could then grow attached to the characters, and start to question their actions if they started to behave oddly. You could have some characters initiating a mutiny, while other characters could sabotage your efforts by leading you down dead ends, then you would actually have to question whether you could trust those characters and if you want them on your side.
      So many opportunities squandered in favour of a simple run and gun game.

    The Thing by John Carpenter really is a horror masterpiece and is probably up there as my favourite film ever made. The themes of paranoia and distrust towards others who are possible monsters wearing human faces and the idea of said monsters probably not even knowing what they are until its too late really elevated the monsters to all new levels that no horror film has achieved before to my knowledge and the designs are wonderfully grotesque and fucked up which is always great imo.
    I like the game a lot but I've never finished it, I remember the first boss being a total arsehole and the enemies being incredibly tough even when on fire but I do want to give it another bash at some point down the line. Makes me wish they made another game with the idea of multiplayer and having people infect other players through subtle contact like the film did in mind, there's a ton they can do with the ideas of the film but it'll probably remain as make believe.

    • @joshupew
      @joshupew 3 года назад

      Although I haven't seen The Thing yet, a movie called Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) comes to mind as a movie with a somewhat similar element of paranoia and familiar faces turning into foes/an unknown entity. It's a black and white movie, but I still think it's very much worth it to watch! Might have even been an inspiration to Carpenter, who knows :P

      The Thing from 1982 is the greatest sci-fi horror movie ever made, no doubt in my mind, and in my personal top 10 or 5 of overall films.
      With today's capabilities of consoles and PCs they can make an incredible game on it, building on this underrated gem from 2002. Maybe from an indie company, since these days the so called big names are putting out a lot of garbage and overpriced messy games.

      Def one of my favorite if not favorite horror film ever made even to this day.
      It still scares me, especially the part where they actually see the first guy get infected as he runs out in the snow and falls to his knees looking at them with black eyes, elongated fingers, and sharp teeth as he let's out a chilling scream and they burn him.
      Gives me the chills that scene, and that's still right near the beginning. At that point you know the movie is going to be scary af.

    After extensive blood testing and monitoring of squad mates through multiple playthroughs... 90% of infection is not scripted... all your team can get infected and it happens after they are hurt by a thing (% chance)... however being hit does not guaranty infection. A infection can actually prevent progress if you need a certain speciality in your squad mates, however the devs always made sure there are multiple of that class in the level or the squads mates needed don't get into contact with a thing until not needed.
    I would happily take a remake or new The Thing game.

    I knew nothing about the basic plot going into the game back in 2002. Loved the game. Then, 10 years later, I finally got around to seeing the movie. The opening scene with the dog running through the snow already started to creep me the fuck out, because I knew why they're chasing it. It was so goddamn scary, knowing more or less where it's going to lead. Well, the movie was even worse than I imagined it might be. I have a poster of it. Felt like it made sense to hang it above my retro PC, fitting with that chess scene.

    kickass review. Picked up this game for my PS2 definitely gave me some "Cold Fear" vibes except icy isolation and dread VS watery depths of isolation and dread. as I read through the tutorial on the menu I was surprised and getting hyped about the level of detail with the squad mechanics. It was very unique especially for a game coming out of 2002 and the 7th gen of gaming. I agree whole heartedly on the issue with the health status and lock on reticele. as well as how a single patch of fire can kill you. The PS2 version doesn't even have the ability to free aim in 2nd person like you did. Its either lock ( which means your crouching alot). Or going in stationary FPS view ( you can lean around corners in this view as well).

    One of those underrated gems that went unnoticed and you buy out of curiosity.
    A pleasant surprise, bought it when it came out and it was awesome. Great atmosphere, attention to details, gameplay and has plenty of those "things" that made the movie the masterpiece that it is.
    I think Carpenter also endorsed it, not saying it's canon but a plausible sequel.

    I love The Thing and really liked this game. Though it was a bit buggy, and the thing I didn't like was my team would either all disappear or someone would be suddenly infected. Despite goin through a stage without losing or having anyone get infected. Either way, I'd love a remastered version and a prequel.

    This is arguably the greatest horror game ever released on the PS2 (Manhunt is second best) and just like the Carpenter film is a masterpiece. This is also my favourite game. BTW Carpenter is also IN THE GAME HIMSELF (for those who don't remember) - he's badass with a shotgun and a great medic. Also notable is that the game takes place six months after the film.
    Oh and I actually liked the 2011 prequel - it's best appreciated when watched along with the original in one hit. Personally I completed my third run-through of this game (& taped the footage on DVD) on my 36th Birthday this year (2021). Awesome game.

    With Night Dive working on the remaster, hopefully they can include a crosshair that changes color when you damage enemies if you choose free targeting, take squad mates with you for boss fights, have your squad mates turn into the Thing at random like the original developers intended, and get Kurt Russell back to voice R.J. MacCready.

    The Thing is 1 of those amazing old movies that do more than just hold up imo. I think they're literally better in terms of atmosphere, cinematography and even visual effects than most the new shit that comes out now. A couple of my favorites are Terminator 2, Alien and Aliens, OG Mad Max, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, TGTBATU, that Pam Grier movie where she killed hella dudes in the cabin and... Toxic Avenger lol. Also maybe this is a personal thing but I think since beginning the use of *heavy* cgi in films that they've severly diminished in quality. Especially horror/scifi movies. Like I said tho that's my own biased opinion as I hate cgi with a fucking passion

    Honestly, it's dated, but even this video makes it look surprisingly effective as a horror game. The level of gore, the visual design of the creatures, and the so-to-speak choreography of how they charge you down halls and their movements is legitimately horrifying even in a RUclips video more than some horror films. Definitely gives a proto-Dead Space vibe.

    The Thing is my favorite horror movie of all time, with Black Christmas as a very close second.
    I have fond memories of the game, I got it when it came out back in 2002, and it took me a few years to beat it, because I split the gameplay between two ps2s.
    It was a good game for its time. Looking back my only criticism was regarding whose infected and who isn't.
    Each and every person that is infected has a pointed in the game where they go from being human to infected. If they make another game, I think who and who isn't infected should depend solely on your choices.
    Once you got the hang of the sequence, you basically knew who to take out before you walked in the next room. It roomed a good portion of the suspense that the game had me feeling.
    And the final boss, was ridiculously easy to beat. In contrast the other bosses were much harder to kill on the first play through. Other than that, it was a good game. Definitely underrated.

    One of the best games I ever played, i remember the hype surrounding it when the trailer was revealed in 2002, I remember being so happy when I brought the PC game, it was so faithful to the film and very creepy rather than horrifying, it was all about suspence, the use of paranoia and fear was expertly incorporated. From start to finish, the mystery of the thing and who was the thing remained. Often times, your team would suspect you and each other or simply crack up. Fabulous
