The Suffering is a 2004 first and third-person shooter psychological horror video game, developed by Surreal Software for PlayStation 2, Xbox and Microsoft Windows. The game was published by Midway Games for PlayStation and Xbox. The PC version was published by Encore in North America and by Zoo Digital Publishing in Europe. In North America, the game was released for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in March, and for PC in June. In Europe, it was released for the PlayStation and Xbox in May, and for PC in July. A version was also planned for the GameCube, but was cancelled prior to release. In 2017, the game was released on GOG.com.
The game tells the story of Torque, a prisoner on death row for murdering his ex-wife and two children, a crime of which he claims to be innocent, saying he blacked out and cannot remember what happened. Shortly after he arrives in Abbot State Penitentiary on Carnate Island, off the coast of Maryland, an earthquake hits the island, resulting in the prison being attacked by unusual supernatural threats. So Torque needs to attempt to fight his way to freedom, whilst also going up against the demons within him, and attempting to remember what really happened to his family. The game features three endings, depending on the players' actions throughout, each of which reveal a different version of the murder of Torque's family.
The Suffering received primarily positive reviews. Whilst some critics felt the blend of action with horror didn't work, and that the game was not sufficiently scary, others praised its differentiation from traditional survival horror games such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Fatal Frame. Many also lauded the creature design, the tone, and the game's morality system, which determines both the ending, and how certain characters interact with Torque during the game. The Suffering was a commercial success, selling over 1.5 million units worldwide across all platforms. In 2005, a sequel was released, The Suffering: Ties That Bind.

It's also very interesting when you think about it how did Clem see all these different monsters yet somehow never had to fight with any expect for Festers
especially if you take into consideration that he made entries about the last boss but it's hard to imagine it being there before the boss fight anyway
also he said he made a drawing of Torque's family from a picture he found on the ground
but how could he find the picture when Torque never lost it
it's almost as if Clem was a G-man type of character that was secretly watching everything from the distance

Fun fact - In 2008, the U.S. Airforce, in association with Midway, released this game, Area 51, and Civilizations At War: Rise and Fall, as sponsored free downloads. The games contained ads in the menus, but other than that, were the full free thing, an event, that, to this day, still baffles me. PR perhaps? Whatever the case, 12 year old me was pretty excited to get his hands on such a nasty game at the time. Still a favorite!

  • @Bladeslingersgamepreserve

I'm glad you finally got around to looking at this GGGman. This is probably my favorite horror video game of all time. I can't think of any other horror game as creative as this one and I enjoy it a lot more than most horror classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill because it not only brings the scares but is genuinely fun to play as well. Your biggest issue with it is that it's unclear what exactly these monsters are and what is going on but I actually view that as a strength. I've always found that what you don't understand is scarier than what you do understand. For example, I really liked Silent Hill up until it was revealed what was actually going on because I now knew there was a way for me to stop the madness. You never get that sense in The Suffering, all you can do is just keep moving forward and hope to find someway to escape. It's also left up to interpretation somewhat and some people have speculated that everything that happens in the game is all in Torque's head which is interesting to think about. To me it is an underrated masterpiece of the genre for it's setting alone (seriously, what is creepier than a haunted prison) as well as it's gameplay and visual design but I will agree that those last few levels of the game are bit annoying. I'd say that it starts to dip and quality when you reach the fight with Height. Still that's a very minor complaint in my opinion. I'm really glad this have been released digitally so more people can discover it.
As for the sequel, it's still a decent game in my opinion as it does share a lot of the same strengths that made the first game such a treat to play but the setting isn't as effective, the villains aren't as interestingly designed as the spirits of Carnate (even Killjoy can't save them) and there is a key change to the gameplay that really botches the overall gameplay. I also feel like it didn't need to be made and is really only there for people like me who really loved the first game.

The thing about Torque's moral ambiguity is YOU are Torque. You decide who lives and dies, and the whole game changes as your own morality shapes it. That's why Torque never speaks. Your own thoughts are essentially Torque's thoughts.

I remember when my big sister coaxed me into buying this game for her when me and her were kids, we were both scared to shit to even finish this game. Even to this day I am still scared to even touch this game, then the sequel was alrightt but fun fact the ending to the first game does have an effect in the second game but mostly adds a different intro and tutorial in the second game. The enemies were manifestations and vengeful spirits of the people who died on the island, the second one tried to give it that the goverment been experimenting on people. The game does have indepth lore but only if you read through Clem's journals on the enemies and Consuela's journal for the island.

Very cool, thanks for taking a look at this. I played it through entirely on release and remember really enjoying it. There wasn't much else at the time that was as creepy as this was while also as action packed as it was. It seems that at least gameplay-wise it has held up OK over the years. Nice to see it be released on GOG.

  • @obsidianproductions8134

With regards to the experiments on inmates: That only explains where, specifically, the Slayers have manifested from. Killjoy was the one doing experiments on people in the abandoned mansion back in the '20s or '30s. You can even see some of the Slayers' getups hanging on the wall in the mansion, I think.
As for where the monsters as a whole came from, I think the idea was that an incredible amount of bad shit had happened on the island over the years, and for some reason, Torque's arrival was either a breaking point or a catalyst. It was pretty vague, and it makes me wonder what kind of explanation we might have originally gotten if these games had turned into a franchise.

Thank you for reviewing this underrated masterpiece, I remember when I was going to get it with a parent they told us they aren't going to sell us the game due to the content and we're taking it off the shelves which is kinda ironic because if i remember correctly they were still selling GTA. After a few years I earned it and first got it on the PS2 along with it's only sequel and later traded them for the Xbox and still have them to this day and I know I am not the only one saying this but I'm still hoping for another Suffering game. Whether it's a late sequel, spiritual successor or another game similar.
BTW, I don't think using the beast won't effect the ending. Its mainly helping or killing the NPCs. Also I don't think you've mentioned there are three endings. The third being neutral.
On another note, I find it funny that the blood will stay on you for a minute or close to a minute depending how much and you got The Evil within where the blood will stay on you for a few seconds. I know it's a nip pick but I personally still enjoy both.

GGG for this month if you want a real scary FPS game that kicks ass please review DarkWatch it's on PS2 and Original Xbox. Also fuck yeah the Suffering fuckin rocks I've never played the sequel but the first game was fuckin awesome they need to remaster it for Xbox One and PS4. Man Midway really knew how to make games they made Mortal Kombat, they made the Rampage series, they made this and many more classics.

darkwatch is literally not a scary game. it's an action game with a horror/western atmosphere. at zero points does that game attempt to scare you.

    • @luxorshark4343
      @luxorshark4343 6 лет назад +2

@Andy Well what I mean scary I just mean horror themed and that's what this month is like i've played the Suffering I mean to me it's not scary its just action with horror themes and stuff. Also @Satanicexela no he hasn't reviewed it believe me I've looked GGGmanlives Darkwatch and nothing came up but yeah it is impressive hardware alongside with Black and MetalWolf Chaos, I know MetalWolf wasn't released outside Japan but I was lucky enough to get a copy when I was over there when it was released back in 04'.

Playing it on original xbox, it still holds up well, for first time im using headphones, and realized there are music and sound cues that are easy to miss without it, also it makes the atmosphere that much better.

The fact that they never actually say where the monster come from really isn't a big deal. Its nice not always having all of the facts layed out for you and spoon fed, it leaves some bits up to he imagination and its what keeps people taking about works for many years down the road.
Also Gggmanlives, your reviews are top tier, id say your one of the best on YT imo.

The way I see it story wise, it's a mass haunting. Prisons are bad places that could harbor a lot of bad energy. When a person does and that mood is strong enough it leaves behind a poltrigeist. However, possibly due to the experimentation, could've lent a hand in them manifesting in the ways those that suffered have died. Maybe when Tork came in, it was kind of the breaking point for all that badness and shit.

Taking a note from Rockstar's originally trilogy of GTA titles the silent protagonist is a way to get the player to imagine themselves AS the character they are playing as, meaning they are the character in the game world making all these decisions to do this or that, the morale system is another way to make the player feel connected to the character as their decisions are being represented in the game world itself.
Edit: and speaking of the morale system it does affect your health regen and the pills you take to refill your health, good morale gives you a lot more health from the meds while evil morale gives you a lot less health from the meds.

i arrive 3 years later, anyway, 4:46 the time you passed transformed into the creature or the amount of times you used the transformation doesn't really affect the game's ending, that's a myth, the only thing that can affect the game's ending is the morality actions you have done through all the game, like he says later in the video (same for the second part). in fact that transformation has the function of give you another way to defeat enemies when you're run out of ammo (for example). and you can upgrade the special attack of that form (spacebar in PC) by killing enemies while you are in that form. so it's a very important and useful mechanic in the game. PD: good review by the way, this is an old game and very few people remember it. i still remember when i play the demo of the 2nd game through Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks in ps2 back in the 2000's. was one of the best games i ever played in that console. and after a few years i was able to fully play the first and the second part in PC. and i still believe that the 1st part have a better environment that the 2nd part had, even with that, the 2nd part have a few upgrades of mechanics compared to the first part. anyway, thanks for keeping alive this game, i still don't believe i see videos of this game in 2017 it's amazing.

Hey Gggman! I have been subscribed for ages and I notice you don't mind reviewing more, let's say 'Controversal' games... So I've been playing this VN called 'Euphoria' and I think you should take a look! It starts out fairly average at the first half but trust me the story really goes places and I guarantee it'll blow your mind! So yeah give it a look it's published by clock up if you are having trouble finding it :)

I think it was for the best that there was no definitive answer to the monsters, at least in the original game. Maybe they're vengeful spirits, maybe there was some kind of evil experiment going on, it was fun to speculate on. As for Torque being silent, it probably would have been difficult to make him emote if he was jumping around from being killing some characters and helping others, but at least they did try to give him some character by suggesting that he had a difficult life prior to the game, with it just being vague enough that he was far from an innocent man, but perhaps not a monster like he could be if the player made him act like one.

The creatures are supernatural in origin. They represent methods of violent death in places that have experienced a lot of death. The idea is that the island is like the Overlook Hotel in The Shining - a concentration of evil that influences the minds of those who stay there too long, hence why so much violence and death has occurred on the island over the centuries. At the start of the game some kind of explosion of evil has occurred, almost like the island has finally reached bursting point, and unleashed all these creatures
In the sequel it's explained further that the catalyst was Torque. Torque has supernatural qualities himself and him arriving on the island was like a key being fitted into a lock. It also turns out that the evil force causing the creatures to appear was not limited to the island, but is actually following Torque wherever he goes - so in the sequel he makes it back to Baltimore only for the entire city to be overrun with NEW creatures within a few hours.
It also explains a bit more about the creatures - or Malefactors, as they're called in that game. Basically throughout human history these creatures have appeared in places of extreme violence and horror, but only numbering 1 or 2 and never for very long. The incident on the island - and later, Baltimore - is the first time these creatures have appeared in mass numbers with no sign of going away.
The sequel also has the woman from Six Feet Under doing a voice, fyi.
