Gears 5 takes a while to get going between a lot of menus, cutscenes, a lengthy recap of the last game, and a boot camp style tutorial. The recap feels like it's more of a reminder of what happened for people who played than an exposition dump for people who are new to the series. I only played the very first GoW and still felt lost in the recap, but I'm not sure how much it really hurts the game itself. You're not required to be invested in the lore to shoot bad guys in their alien faces.
