      It was a different era... still though Pegasus mentions separate bathrooms and fountains. That was the Southern US with Jim Crow laws. The North though had segregation, white-only neighborhoods, redlining for gov loans and even those artist here.... had to use back/side entrances vs fronts of hotels and probably would not be seated in a higher end restaurant with those not as them. Music though was always appreciated and adapted from multiple cultures and for entertainment. Still also they would get paid much less also. I as a white guy... can respect and also realize how we created the messes was have... though some just blame and use pollitical blame games for it and as books get rewritten the way it is going.... some things might not be taught to smooth out realities.

      Black artists of the early 1960s loved touring Britain as the audiences weren't segregated.
      Tina Turner moved to England, where she was considered a superstar because she was considered 2nd rate to Madonna in the USA.
      I remember hearing an interview of Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., where Dean said he wouldn't work at, stay at or eat at any hotel that didn't allow Sammy to enter through the front door or let him eat or sleep there.
      Thankfully, things have come forward a lot since then, but the treatment of even the superstar performers was horrible.

    You are so right BP, I’m 76 and white, and I grew up with this music and loved it. Back then we had white radio stations that played music by white artists, and black stations that played music by black artists. This song you’re doing and others to follow crossed over to the white audience and integrated music. I think music did more than anything else to integrate our society.

    • @carefreescot
      @carefreescot Месяц назад

      Did you really have separate white and black radio stations ???
      Good grief, I'm British and we just had one main national 'pop' music station, which everyone listened to as there wasn't much option. It played a wide variety of different music so 99% of the population heard the same stuff in shops, workplace or at home, lots of British artists but also Americans of every shape and colour.
      There were a couple of what were called 'pirate' radio stations, one being on a ship to avoid legal issues, and they played overnight when the major station stopped.

    • @johnnyd5285
      @johnnyd5285 Месяц назад

      @ Yes we did. Not everywhere, mainly in the south and Midwest. It was movies like that clip you just seen that brought black pop music to mainstream white audiences. It made the big radio stations play this music. Elvis Presley got his influence from listening to black music stations. Listen to one of his first hits, “That’s All Right Mama” originally done by a black artist.

    The platters were a group of great singers. I was born in '52 and we grew up never caring what color anyone was and sometimes not even knowing. All we cared about was the music. And this was real music, not hip hop or rap. And black women and men in the past dressed up for things just like everyone else, sometimes better. I'm a 72 yeard old WF and I would have loved to go to hear music in Harlem or juke joints but lived too far away. No matter what color, as I remember we all dressed the same through the 80s. I don't know when that changed on some level. Maybe it was just a fad like go go boots, etc. Artists are artists, no matter, and The Platters were really big. Thank you for going back to these wonderful groups and singers.

    I saw the Platters in the early seventies at a small club, standing room only. They propped the door open, and the parking lot was full of people listening to this Iconic group! Best thing I ever heard in my life, they sang my favorite song, "My Prayer". That's why it's OUR song after 50 years together.

    My dad listened to three kinds of music. He was born and raised in the Texas panhandle. And Willie Nelson was by far his favorite. He was a year younger than Elvis, so we went to all his movies and sit in the car at a drive-in. And he loved the Platters.

      Nat King Cole was never allowed to go in the front door when he played. A pox on hollywood and the insane unions back then.

      i had the opportunity to pick a group to play at an Optmists club dance and the Drifters were available. 1966 and an hour of their music before a chicano and gringo audience. Met the leader and talked the band as they were on their way to san diego. Loved it.

    Save The Last Dance For Me - The Drifters. BP this was another mega hit group and one of their best songs that went #1 in 1960 for multiple weeks. Amazing harmonies and love to see you react to it!

    Wonderful music ! 😍 The third person who say down at the table ,was Alan Freed, very famous discjockey. He was also the one that played both black and white music on his station . So he was involved in breaking that race barrier. And I think he organized concerts or nog parties. A bit like American bandstand . Go look him up. And maybe react to something about him . There was a Hallmark movie made about him and his life.
    Sadly his life took a bad turn, as he got involved With the mafia,unknowningly.
