Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, The Great Pretender
Yes!!! Awesome choices
Remember When (my favorite), The Magic Touch, Twilight Time, My Prayer. So many good songs.
Freddy Mercury did a cover of The Great Pretender
Yes! I love The Platters. Been listening to them since I was like 8. Goes great on my Fallout Spotify Playlist.
I'm old now. But when I was in 7th grade at my first dance I danced with a cutey 8th grader to Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. I was in 7th heaven. Really fond memory. The Platters have a huge catalog of great songs. Please play more. My Prayer is another good one
I'm white and grew up in the era of music like this, beautiful warm music which crossed all barriers, accepted and appreciated by everyone!
It was a different era... still though Pegasus mentions separate bathrooms and fountains. That was the Southern US with Jim Crow laws. The North though had segregation, white-only neighborhoods, redlining for gov loans and even those artist here.... had to use back/side entrances vs fronts of hotels and probably would not be seated in a higher end restaurant with those not as them. Music though was always appreciated and adapted from multiple cultures and for entertainment. Still also they would get paid much less also. I as a white guy... can respect and also realize how we created the messes was have... though some just blame and use pollitical blame games for it and as books get rewritten the way it is going.... some things might not be taught to smooth out realities.
Same here. Born in '56 and still listening to the greatest music ever made.
100% truth. I was born in 49. This era of music is just as good now as it was then.
Black artists of the early 1960s loved touring Britain as the audiences weren't segregated.
Tina Turner moved to England, where she was considered a superstar because she was considered 2nd rate to Madonna in the USA.
I remember hearing an interview of Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., where Dean said he wouldn't work at, stay at or eat at any hotel that didn't allow Sammy to enter through the front door or let him eat or sleep there.
Thankfully, things have come forward a lot since then, but the treatment of even the superstar performers was horrible.
Loved this song and the platters. One of my late Mothers favorites ❤ 💕
MOTOWN wasn't even thought of when they released this!
That was the great Tony Williams! The most beautiful Voice God ever created!
Always so many personal opinions on the best voice but I for one will not argue with you on this one, magic in his voice.
As great as he sounds I still think when he sings smoke gets in your eyes is undeniably his pinacle
Loved the Platters since I was a child.
Lol. Not to be confused with the great jazz drummer Tony Williams, who got big later, but was around about the same time as the Platters, really.
The Great Pretender is one of the best songs of all time
The Platters are so classy. I grew up listening to The Platters. "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "The Great Pretender", "Harbor Lights", "My Prayer", and "With This Ring". Loved your reaction, BP!! 💖
Patty-I grew up with this music. Perfection. My parents loved the Platters.
@@patriciatolliver4057 Those were great days back then. There was just something wonderful about The Platters. ❤❤
This song is my husband and my song. He was the only man that I could honestly say “only you “. He died last year and this song is precious for me. Thank you 💗💗🎼
The Platters were as big as a group could get. They put out so many great ones. I am so glad I experienced this in my childhood.
I'm 71 and I remember doing my fist slow dance at my first HS Prom to this beautiful song. Even today, when I play this song I grab my wife and start dancing. Great memories from a great group, thank you so much for reminding me .🥰👍
Yep 73 I was there. ✌️
I am old enough to remember when this song came out. Tony Williams, the lead singer had an incredible voice, & the Platters were one of the first Black groups to cross over to “white” radio. Thanks to disc jockey Alan Freed for introducing us to a whole world of great music!
My mother used to play the platters and also Johnny Mathis all day when I was growing up. I’m 72 now and still appreciate their music.
If memory server's me right back in the 70's i had the "Saturday Night Fever" album and this was one of the songs
Always loved this song. Loved 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's.
Me too 🎉❤
Beautiful era! AAAA++++!!!! Lead singer Tony Williams.
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes is absolutely amazing.
I’m an old white British lady and my dad who died 45 years ago loved this group and made me a life long fan. He also loved the Inkspots who were also amazing to listen to.Hearing this music brings a glow in my heart. He also introduced me to the Harlem Globe Trotters and Sweet Georgia Brown and we just loved watching them.Such happy, happy memories.❤️🙏
@SMT-vb2vb oh yeah 😎
The Inkspots singing If I Didn't Care.
One of my favorites.
Don't forget the Mills Brothers.
Nice ❤ smoke gets in your eye's ❤
The third a person who sits down at the table was the famous concert producer and disc jockey Alan Freed.
The voice of an angel. Such a beautiful, classy group! In the video, how could those folks at the table be talking during this song? A true music lover is silent and taking in the goodness of the music. Great song for a really close slow dance with the one!
This is a scene from a movie.
The Platters were one of the top groups in the world during the 1950-1970's their songs were best sellers. They wereeoften on E d Sullivan show.
Please go down this rabbit whole the Platters are epic
Smoke gets in your eyes, another classic!
I loved the Platters since the early 60's. My Mom had all their albums.
That’s how we got to see “music videos” before MTV. Musical acts were worked into the plots of movies, usually in scenes set in nightclubs.
I'll soon be 68, and the Platters were one of my dad's favorites, so I grew up with this. Thanks for the memories.
One of my favourite groups of all time. The lead vocals are beautiful and the harmonies are unbeatable. I could listen to The Platters all day.
2 of my faves from this era that I still love today;
Johnny Mathis - 'Chances Are' and Jackie Wilson - 'Lonely Teardrops'.
All the comments say it all: Classic Music that will live forever. So many great memories listening to them.
I was a teen when The Platters were big. Everyone loved them. They sounded so great and Tony Williams had the greatest voice. The Platters were a very classy act and they were always dressed to the nines. Loved them and my favorite song by them was Smoke Gets In My Eyes. Thanks for reacting to The Platters. 👏👏👏🥰
When I was about 10 or 11 my girlfriend and I listened to The Platters while dreaming of boys and that was in Cuba prior to 1959. Still brings tears from nostalgia. They were the best
OHHHHH....SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......GOOOOOOOOD!!!! LOVE IT, BP!!! The PLATTERS were SO SMOOOOOTH!!! ANY song by them is FIRE!!! ENJOY!!! :)
Blue moon by the marcells, a great song and great Americana.
Love the Platters. This was my era and you have only scratched the surface of great, great music. Thank you.
You are so right BP, I’m 76 and white, and I grew up with this music and loved it. Back then we had white radio stations that played music by white artists, and black stations that played music by black artists. This song you’re doing and others to follow crossed over to the white audience and integrated music. I think music did more than anything else to integrate our society.
Did you really have separate white and black radio stations ???
Good grief, I'm British and we just had one main national 'pop' music station, which everyone listened to as there wasn't much option. It played a wide variety of different music so 99% of the population heard the same stuff in shops, workplace or at home, lots of British artists but also Americans of every shape and colour.
There were a couple of what were called 'pirate' radio stations, one being on a ship to avoid legal issues, and they played overnight when the major station stopped.
@ Yes we did. Not everywhere, mainly in the south and Midwest. It was movies like that clip you just seen that brought black pop music to mainstream white audiences. It made the big radio stations play this music. Elvis Presley got his influence from listening to black music stations. Listen to one of his first hits, “That’s All Right Mama” originally done by a black artist.
This video is a clip from the movie, Rock Around the Clock (1956), and featured Bill Haley & the Comets as well as the Platters. The DJ and promoter, Alan Freed, appears for a moment at the dinner table (dark hair). It was one of a series of movies introducing rock & roll to a white and older audience.
I was born in the early 60's but my sisters were 11 and 13 yrs older than me. This is the music I got to listen to growing up and fell in love with it. My favourite time periods of music is the 50's, 60's, and 70's. I'm so glad I was there for the good stuff
I grew up with the Platters, Four Tops and Johnny Mathis. My mother played the 50's and 60's and I grew to love this music. Not to forget Elvis! Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and The Great Pretender are two more.
Love, love, LOVE this beautiful music! So classy.
The platters were a group of great singers. I was born in '52 and we grew up never caring what color anyone was and sometimes not even knowing. All we cared about was the music. And this was real music, not hip hop or rap. And black women and men in the past dressed up for things just like everyone else, sometimes better. I'm a 72 yeard old WF and I would have loved to go to hear music in Harlem or juke joints but lived too far away. No matter what color, as I remember we all dressed the same through the 80s. I don't know when that changed on some level. Maybe it was just a fad like go go boots, etc. Artists are artists, no matter, and The Platters were really big. Thank you for going back to these wonderful groups and singers.
In 1955 I was 15 years old and a sophomore in high school and absolutely loved The Platters! They were my favorite group; were spectacular than and spectacular now. May they be resting in peace. 🙏
Absolutely some of the best voices came from the 50s and 60s
This is from a movie Rock Around the Clock, 1956. Alan Freed was a very famous music promoter, he came in and sat down with the couple in the front.
Twilight Time is another excellent Platters song
Yes Yes Yes !!!
Tony Williams had one of the most beautiful voices in the 50’s era. In my humble opinion
I'm born in 1956 and glad I grew up with this fantastic music. 🎶🎶🎶🙋♀️ Greetings from the Netherlands. 😘
He sings like an angel! Great choice today!
The Platters are so good. I love their music
Looks like from a movie, and Alan Freed (famous DJ) came and sat with that couple at the table.
My Prayer, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, The Great Pretender .... all worth your time and ears. And remember, there is no fancy equipment altering their voices or making them in tune. This is pure perfection. The Platters are one of the greatest from the Doo-Wop Era! 🙌🏽💕❤️🎶🎵
He had amazing control. Love all there songs.
One of my favorite groups of the past. I am 68 now and still love them them. Glad you are listening to them. Keep going through their catalog of music. It's great 👍❤
Your comments about entertainment and sports breaking through, and breaking down, racial barriers was right on! That's what was happening in the 50s and 60s...and I'll always be proud to have been part of it....(And I wonder where Ellen Farley is these days....she and I danced to this at a 7th grade party)
74 yrs old and grew up listening to The Platters. His voice is pure gold!
The voice of an angel! Like fine wine (I'm told!)...only gets better over time. Simply beautiful. Back when people aspired to be the best they could be and didn't settle for the easy way in everything. Class doesn't know bank balance or color. You either have it or you don't...and the Platters had it in full measure.
Love this song. Voice from heaven
My mom loved the platters. She passed January of 22. This brings me comfort ❤
Great take, because it is all true. Movie, in the 1956 film Rock Around the Clock, The Platters participated with both songs, "Only You" and "The Great Pretender".
I never get tired of watching your reaction to great music. I was born a year after this so I grew up with so much wonderful music. Thank God gor lp’s and record players.
My sisters wedding song! Mine was "My Prayer'! Another beautiful one to check out.
A lot of reaction channels always say, they just don’t make songs like they used to, and you’re right. Best era ever for this old gal. Thank you as always BP❤️❤️❤️👵🏼 Gmaw
You guys are just kids! I was 16 when this came out and went to our monthly Doo Wop club meeting yesterday with 10 people. The last man seated at the table was Alan Freed who brought this kind of music to New York in 1954, seen here in one of his early films. Please play Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by the Platters. I'm 85 and white and really enjoy your reactions.
They were really good... I am 82 now and remember them well in my early life...... brilliant and talented.
I was born in 54. Started listening to the radio when I was 8. Loved the 50s,60s and 70s music. Some 80s.
Those voices were pure gold they were unique singers now this days can't get even close
The Platters❤❤❤❤❤ No Words needed!
So many great songs, "Harbor Light"," My Prayer", "Only You", "The Great Pretender", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes". So many good songs.
Ageless and perfect. What a voice! What perfect harmonies.
I was born in 1950, my mom said I sat in front of her giant old radio. At 3 I didn't play dolls I just loved music. 🎶🎶🎶❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
So smooth, and so classy. "Smoke gets in your eyes" please. Also "The Great Pretender."
Oh...legends 🔥💃🏻❤️
The 60s and 70s let us listen to ALL music. Teenagers were happy with good music and voices. Never thought about skin color!
I LONG for the DAYS of DINNER CLUBS and PIANO BARS!!! They just don't even EXIST, anymore. WHAT an EVENING THAT would BE: RIGHT?!?!?! AHHHHhhhhhhhh.... 😍😍😍😍
Absolutely legendary! Just as an aside, Elvis was a great believer in civil rights. He would refuse to perform if venues tried to say he couldn’t use his black backup singers. Would be fantastic if you could react to his live performance of ‘In the Ghetto’. Would love your thoughts.
Music transcends the racial barriers. Love The Platters. America Graffiti is an awesome movie full of tracks like this.
My dear Mom loved the Platters. Had their vinyl albums. I was a kid. Even as a kid I liked their talent. They sounded so good. That was mid 50 s. Early 60 s. She passed 20 years ago. I m 75 but musically feel 45.
I forgot they had a woman in the group, she's gorgeous.
I discovered my parent's Platters albums when I was 12 (1967) and listened to them frequently.
The lead singer is Tony Williams. I believe this was in the movie "Rock around the Clock".
That's what I was thinking. I just couldn't remember the name of the movie. It's been a long time since I have seen it!
But it's definitely from a movie.
The Platters were gentle people. Gentle men and a gentle lady.
Aren’t they just the greatest ? I was lucky enough to have been there when this and so many amazing songs came out!
I'm so excited to see this! This is one of my all time favorite songs.
Had the great privilege of seeing these great talents, live, in Australia in the early 70's. I'm sure not all of them were there , but they still sounded great.
Great stuff! Such harmonies. "The Great Pretender" is another amazing song. Talent was something you had to have back then.
My mother had Platter albums and when I was a kid I listened to them all the time 💙
one of the best voices ever, and the back up singers. complimented him so well, just great, I have several vintage platters lp's most were on mercury/wing records, my prayer is another fantastic song.i think the performers of this era, into the early 60's portrayed class, no matter the genre of music, than any other decade
I have a few of the Platters lp's too!!!!
Another group from this era was "The Coasters" I will never forget the time I saw them in a little bar in Vista CA in the early 90s. We had a blast.😂😂😂
Yes, another of my fav groups.
I saw the Platters in the early seventies at a small club, standing room only. They propped the door open, and the parking lot was full of people listening to this Iconic group! Best thing I ever heard in my life, they sang my favorite song, "My Prayer". That's why it's OUR song after 50 years together.
My dad listened to three kinds of music. He was born and raised in the Texas panhandle. And Willie Nelson was by far his favorite. He was a year younger than Elvis, so we went to all his movies and sit in the car at a drive-in. And he loved the Platters.
My kind of music ❤❤❤❤❤❤
born in 1948 and have thousands of records. great great monos
Nat King Cole was never allowed to go in the front door when he played. A pox on hollywood and the insane unions back then.
i had the opportunity to pick a group to play at an Optmists club dance and the Drifters were available. 1966 and an hour of their music before a chicano and gringo audience. Met the leader and talked the band as they were on their way to san diego. Loved it.
It's impossible not to smile when music like this is performed 😁
This was a great sounding song and a great time in music history so many great Acts, and singer's were discovered my mother told me she listening to this type of music when she met my Dad, he listened and played country music, what was real country not crap called country today, she really liked this music I listen to anything that sounds good and has a good beat. Thanks
And yes that note he just hit was insane sounds great.
I wasn't even born when this came out but I love, love them. His voice is heavenly and makes me emotional. I'm crying right now watching this. Beautiful! ✌❤
My sweet Daddy was a Band Leader for over 50 years & played this when I was growing up. I’m almost 59 now. Precious memories 🥰🎶
I have ALL their music..So Wonderful !!!
I was 💯 born in the wrong era cuz I love music from the 50s & 60s! Dive down the oldies rabbithole!! 🙌
Me.too...I was born in 1977 and I love 1930s-1960s
Absolutely Beautiful & Classy. Keep on Rocking! ☮️🎶✝️
Now we cooking, chuffing love the platters. "Twilight time" is soooo good 😊
Save The Last Dance For Me - The Drifters. BP this was another mega hit group and one of their best songs that went #1 in 1960 for multiple weeks. Amazing harmonies and love to see you react to it!
Wonderful music ! 😍 The third person who say down at the table ,was Alan Freed, very famous discjockey. He was also the one that played both black and white music on his station . So he was involved in breaking that race barrier. And I think he organized concerts or nog parties. A bit like American bandstand . Go look him up. And maybe react to something about him . There was a Hallmark movie made about him and his life.
Sadly his life took a bad turn, as he got involved With the mafia, unknowningly.
Absolutely stunning vocals.
