  • So in this video, I'm trying to show tips and tricks on how to eradicate goat heads from your property. Spraying with a weed killer will kill the plant but will still allow hundreds of seeds to remain fertile. You can use a pre-emergent to try to sterilize the seeds, but I have yet to find a pre-emergent that works well with this particular weed. The seeds are easily carried from your feet to other parts of your yard or from car tires in gravel or dirt parking lots, and can quickly get way out of control. Cleaning the seeds as best as possible helps to dramatically reduce the number of plants that come back. If you spray them while they're quite Young and very small, you can kill them before they have seeds which is much easier then pulling them by hand. During the growing season, however, you would need to spray about every 2 weeks to catch new growing plants and ensure they are not producing the seeds. If you find this video helpful, please hit the thumbs up button. Thank you for watching, and if you have more tips of your own to share with us, please comment below.

    Goatheads are the bane of my existence. We finally got some good rain last winter here in Sou Cal and then what do you know..I have them bloody things sprouting up everywhere. My husband says forget it, it's a lost cause and I'm over here like Scarlett O'Hara "As God is my witness...I will TAKE BACK my lawn!!!"

      Dame of Thrones I wasn’t concerned with them until my puppy started getting 3-5 per day stuck in her feet. It would stop her in her tracks and I’d have to pick her up and pull it out. This might help as I’ve got an old shop vac laying around

    Please read this post to add more info and help in your battle against these weeds!! We moved into a house that the previous owners did nothing with the property and puncture vines were everywhere (including in the “lawn” itself). After doing some research, I learned that each of the “pods” from 1 flower being pollinated can have usually about five seed packets (2 large prongs that resemble the goat’s head) and that each packet contains about 5 seeds. So just from one flower turning into a pod can result in about 25 seeds that can mature and germinate. Meaning, if you have 1 weed that has a lot of pods on it, you’re potentially looking at hundreds or even thousands of seeds that can germinate later. If that’s not bad enough, each of the goat head seed packets can be able to germinate for up to about 10 years! If you have large areas of ground covered in these weeds, you might want to invest in ordering puncture vine weevils. They only eat these weeds so they’re non-invasive, and they lay their eggs in the pods, so the beetles eat the weeds and their babies eat the seeds. They’ve been known to eradicate over 90% puncture vine weeds. If you only have them in small areas, then it really is a matter of as soon as you see one, pull it up and throw it away or toss it in a burn barrel. You can also use a propane torch and burn those little bastards back to hell! Avoid at all costs getting poked by the prongs! Not only does the puncture initially hurt, but the area where you got poked will feel like a gnarly bruise for a few days. I’d easily take stepping on a Lego vs one of those! I know this post is long, but anything that can help others battle these evil weeds, the better! Good luck!

    If you soak the ground with water it allows them to be pulled up by the root easily once you get all you can see you go to the nearest base and grab about 65 pounds of C-4, make sure you have some good eye protection before ya light it off,if the hole is not deep enough light another off ... If you have small landscaping gravel all over your yard which you don’t want to suck up with the goat head seeds, use gloves and duct tape. Make a duct tape collar with the sticky side out and putting your four fingers through the collar to hold it. The sticky side should pick up plenty of seeds.

    My place is infested with goat heads. I almost had them eradicated. I got sick in 2018 and kinda let the slide, and now they are back with a vengeance First of all, poster is incorrect. Each goat head breaks into 8 individual seeds. Seeds can remain dormant in soil for over 20 years. I'm in southeast Idaho and our arid climate is near perfect for the most prolific plant on the planet. If left unchecked, I've found vines with 15-20 arms over 15' long with tens of thounds goat heads, now times that by eight seeds. I pull the majority by hand, I'm not a fan of herbicides. I usually every evening after work I'd pull 1 or 2 five gal buckets with pulled plants. I use a long 12" screwdriver tapped in parallel to taproot, breakup soil, which allows me to pull the majority of the root. Anther trick is to pull them when they are little. They pull easy and don't have thorns yet. Once thorns form they are fertile and viable, and if you wait till the plant matures, the thorns will fall off the vine as you pull and need to be picked or vacuumed. Yes I've vacuumed them too. My neighbors thought I was crazy. He sprays his. Good luck everyone, you'll need it

      Seeds can only lie viably dormant from 5-7 years. Not 20.

    Do not cut roots! Use a garden claw to break up the soil an 1-2" deep around the root base to easily pull the puncture vine out of the ground. To kill remaining roots, follow up w/a mixture of 1-2 cups table SALT dissolved in hot tap water(be sure to stir it), then pour mixture into a garden watering can add more water to fill it to the top. Pour salt water directly over & around area. Be sure to break top layer of break dirt, otherwise, the salt water will just sit on top & will not absorb as quickly or efficiently as needed to keep it from resprouting. Use this method ONLY if you do not plan to use soil for planting. Salt will render the soil infertile for months to years depending on how much & how often it is used. Before smoothing out broken dirt layer w/a hoe, liberally sprinkle dry table salt or space out salt pellets then cover w/remaining dirt. Anytime it rains, the salt will dissolve preventing further growth. Good luck!

      They might be sandburs perhaps. If so, they are even more nasty. Do they resemble a crab grass by chance? Those are more easily taken care of with pesticides if so.

      Utah State extension says that if you break it off of the tap root, it won't grow back; there isn't enough energy contained within to resprout. However since it will germinate all year long, if it has gone to seed it doesn't need to resprout, it just keeps going with a whole new plant.

    • @Herooftheday64
      @Herooftheday64 6 лет назад +5

      Best to get rid of as much of it as you can before laying sod. Most landscapers would bring a small skidsteer in and remove the top layer of dirt to get rid of what they can. The "seedbank" in the soil needs to removed. You can also put down a pre-emergent weed control (chemical herbicide that is lawn safe) after the sod has rooted, just to keep them from sprouting up. Chances are you will still need to inspect and remove any sprouts before they mature to the point of seeding more goat-heads.

      I have a large turf grass back yard and a puncture vine infested area beside me. Puncture vine seems to grow only in our dry, rather barren areas. Even though I'm sure we've tracked puncture vine seeds onto the lawn, there's been no sign of it there.

They never go away it would be the same thing as putting a blanket over a bed of rose thorns maybe for a second you wouldn't notice them, but after a minute of putting pressure on them they would poke back through...dogs laws will find them and they can reap off in their pads don't do it...get them out of there..they are relentless.

      I put sod over the stickers and this works great, if you're trying to wake up the dormant seeds and get those growing, talk about shooting yourself in the foot. If this guy was really concerned about the goat heads, why did he let them grow 10 ft. long and germinate before breaking out the vac.

  • @tamarakennedy4976
    @tamarakennedy4976 5 лет назад +1

    Dig one foot down and remove that top soil lay down weed and feed or some kind of weed killer not roundup it's toxic, but just haul out that overrun top soil as long as you have one, you have a new crop on its way, it's the only way rid and haul away top soil take rototill that layer and buy new soil people like pool contractors are constantly in need of someone to take the free soil. Call a swimming pool contracting company or an excavation company they should be happy to help you out.
