I’ve had mine for 12 years and I just bought a charger for it after probably 7 years and now I have to relearn everything about it lol I didn’t know about the mic either
Sold my sx30 on amazon for $310 and bought sx40 from ebay for same prize. I have been doing this since sx series came out.... free upgrade every year!!!!!
By far the most informative video Ive seen. Ive been looking closely at this camera, seeing how it looks the best in my price range. My only question is, how well does it do with fast moving objects. I take pictures of horses and their riders, and so I need a good camera that isnt going to blur the horses legs or anything else for that matter.
ok, you've convinced me to buy this camera having watched the Nikon Coolpix P510 review and Lumix DMC-FZ150 review (despite you saying the Lumix is the best of all 3).
Many of the SX40's relatively minor "limitations" are eliminated with the installation of CHDK. The largest limitation imposed by Canon is no native RAW support - and by "native", I mean installed by Canon. CHDK provides this most basic of features - and with it (via Photoshop and AEB), HDR support.
great reviews! Question....any idea the difference between this camera and the Cannon Powershot SX500 IS ? Costco carries this, with only a $250 price tag.....thanks for the reviews.
Thanks for sharing. I've checked SX40 in store and noticed the blurry-image-while-zooming as well. I read in dpreview about HX100v that its performance is kinda slow, so....... yeah maybe I have to wait for HX200v. cant wait! X_X
@ TechnoBuffalo I have had my SX40 for some time now, and how do you get the hot shoe off? Great camera so far, I was able to take some great pics of the moon a few times.
@CSXRockford Yep I got some great pics of the moon and its craters as well when I first bought it. I was amazed at how far that zoom can go and how clear it really is.
I've read some rumours about an SX50 HS on a site called dpreview, which is said to have a 42X zoom with a 14.1 mp sensor, and a Digic 5' advanced' (I think it was called) processor, etc. I have the SX40 HS, and love it. I assumed the SX50 would be something like what I just read, and I wouldn't be surprised if it comes out within a few months or so, since the Canon T4i just came out rather quickly (last week)! Of course, the SX60 will be even more impressive, then the SX70 and on and on....
Which should i get? A canon Powershot sx40 hs, canon Powershot sx30 is, or a panasonic fz150? I dont care about the price and i will use it mostly for wildlife pics and scenery. And which of these have lenses for better zoom?
My suggestion to buy CANON SX40 Take Reasons to buy the Canon SX40 1- Great zoom 35x , 2-High speed movies 240 fps 3-Rapid fire 10.3 fps 4-Wide angle lens 24 mm 5-24p movies For that film look 6-Flip-out screen great for movies 7-cheaper 320 € vs g12 362 € And the canon G12 good camera take some reason to buy it 1-Really small Mid size 112x76x48 mm 2-Flip-out screen great for movies 3-Thin 1,9" 4-Great macro 1cm 5-Shoots RAW Better editing 6-24p movies For that film look :)
I think u make the best reviews ever. that's why i check every day for your review for sx50 hs, but still nothing :( do u plan to make one at all, or there's no point to wait?
I started to buy this camera, but I was not at all impressed with the cheap plastic feel of the case. I instead went with the Canon SX260 since I plan on carrying the camera every day, and I need it to be durable. True I gave up some features and the super zoom, but unless you are going to do long range photography, the SX260 is going to give you all you need. Besides, the T2i/T3i/T4i will be better for long distance photos with their better image resolution and interchangeable lenses.
Hi sir, since you did both reviews for nikon coolpix 510 and this canon powershot sx40, which one do you prefer for your subscribers to buy? pls respond as soon as possible, thank you!
@MrSquareZNation In short, it means a photo of a distant image. Its like the word "telephotographic." Whenever you see the letters "t" and "w" next to each other on a camera, t = zoomed in and w = zoomed out.
In the 'minature', 'slow motion' and I think, 'toy' modes you can. Plus you can turn off the auto volume and adjust the mic level, so I would assume you can turn the sound down to zero- I haven't tested it. You can download the manual if you go to the Canon website and you'll see everything it can do before you buy it.
hi i am from mexico and i want your opinion which camera shuold i buy between this and the sony dsc hx200v? i cant decide i really like both thanks one question for both cameras do they have auto focus? and does the canon records in slow motion thanks
If you use CHDK on something like this it takes it from being good to fantastic because a lot of the limiting factors become available. So the Nikons and Fujis are stuck with the firmware that comes on them, where Canons can be hacked to give features the firmware originally didn't. If it had a mic jack like the Panasonic it would be perfect.
i just got into photography and im lookin for a camera to strt with what do you think is better this camera or the s100 on the last video to start with
Can you take photos while shooting video - that is the only reason I am still thinking if I should buy this over the FZ100. (I don't have the budget for FZ150)
The Mobilereviewguys should learn from this guy. He says everything That is important in a much shorter Time. Also he includes the testvideos and Images in the reviewvideo which is much better than splitting the review in a lot of videos.
Could you make a video reviewing the Panasonic DMC-FZ150? I hear its the best superzoom camera out there and might even be a direct competitor to the dSLR market. I would love to see your review of it.
The answer to your question is simple (and quite obvious if I might say). If you want a compact camera that you can carry around all day, quick autofocus, smooth one touch motorized zoom function (DSLR will always have non-motorized zoom so you'll have to zoom by hand hardly), fixed 35x optical zoom equivalent to 1000x telephoto (no available 28-1000x lens in DSLR), then it's obvious that you need an SX40 HS. If on the other hand you're after photo and video quality with lesser grains and noise in low light for photo and video, and you want to build your Canon system with variety of interchangeable lenses to choose frome, then you need a 1300d DSLR with bigger image sensor. Both have limits depending on what you want to do and shoot with your camera. Outdoors and with good lighting you will never go wrong with SX40 as an all around small and light travel gear.
@TheSnowTurtles Because you might not need a large zoom bridge camera like this. Some people just want a little compact that they can put in their pocket and take anywhere.
I've had it all these 12 years and now thanks to your video I found out that it has a place for a microphone under the cover.:D
I’ve had mine for 12 years and I just bought a charger for it after probably 7 years and now I have to relearn everything about it lol I didn’t know about the mic either

My husband gave me a Cannon Super Shot SX40 HS last May for our 45th wedding anniversary. I take lots of great pictures with it. LOVE IT!
Just Picked up one of these recently for less than $100 and I couldn't be happier! Fantastic camera for the price to performance ratio!
Can I get some heads up I'm also willing to buy one below 100
@@hyper_g9720 Hey Hyper, did you want a review video on this camera? I would be more than happy to create one at some point 🙂

Lol i laughed when the video started. Great sense of humor and great video. Thanks for posting! :)
I want get started in photography, and someone is selling this camera online, is it still worth buying it today as a starting point?
I own an SX40... It's an excellent starter camera... buying a used camera online is risky though...
Same
Someone is selling one for 40$ near me, is it worth it at that price? I believe it comes with a few extra batteries too.

I think you just have to use mark 3 with the lens of 75/300
The best reviewer of technobuffalo ;) Jon has a lot to learn from this guy. Love his style
i bought this camera for $380ish in Fred Myers at Juneau AK. I'm loving it it was worth every cent =)

Do you get to keep the cameras you review, or do you buy them ? Or they are just review units and you have to give them back ?
My suggestion to buy CANON SX40
Take Reasons to buy the Canon SX40
1- Great zoom 35x ,
2-High speed movies 240 fps
3-Rapid fire 10.3 fps
4-Wide angle lens 24 mm
5-24p movies For that film look
6-Flip-out screen great for movies
7-cheaper 320 € vs g12 362 €
And the canon G12 good camera take some reason to buy it
1-Really small Mid size 112x76x48 mm
2-Flip-out screen great for movies
3-Thin 1,9"
4-Great macro 1cm
5-Shoots RAW Better editing
6-24p movies For that film look

Mike, I just got mine recently, and I could have sworn I saw a histogram somewhere in one of the modes!
he gets better and better :)
I've got a question. How is the autofocus in Videos?
Could I use the camera for RUclipsvideos? :)
+Charly Seevogel Depeding on how far you want to zoom, the further you are and held in hand it will be shaky. On a Tripod its fine up to about 1mile.

Thank You :)
Hi sir, since you did both reviews for nikon coolpix 510 and this canon powershot sx40, which one do you prefer for your subscribers to buy? pls respond as soon as possible, thank you!
I like big Zooms and I cannot lie
SX40HS is the best, the only plus for the N 510 is that it has much longer zoom and another best camera is Panasonic FZ150
are you pretty much paying for the zoom with this camera? if i am not too interested in the big zoom is it worth buying??
I got this camera last week for $60
@MrSquareZNation
In short, it means a photo of a distant image. Its like the word "telephotographic."

Very good review on the sx40.
great review, you made it so simple to understand for newbies like myself :)
What do you think is better for nature/animal pics in dim light Canon PowerShot SX40 HS or Canon G12
I have the SX20 IS. I love it!
i have canon sx40hs ,it's really Good camera for photography.
Awesome review
awesome review and awesome camera!
The installation of CHDK allows the exposure to max out at about 30 minutes.
0.4 secs per shot, which is very fast. 24fps was the frame rate on the video. the 0.4 is in the camera specs
i just got into photography and im lookin for a camera to strt with what do you think is better this camera or the s100 on the last video to start with
is the a good camera for filming on the go. like vlogging wise. i make youtube video. is it heavy? or just normal for the average person to carry
Nice review, great information
Hey, I would like to know if this camera can shoot fast as if you would snap it fast.
Can you take photos while shooting video - that is the only reason I am still thinking if I should buy this over the FZ100. (I don't have the budget for FZ150)
Which is the best camera:
Nikon Coolpix P150
Canon Powershot SX40 HS
Sony Cybershot HX200V
Fujifilm Finepix HS20 EXR
Panasonic Lumix FZ150
This camera does have a histogram, you have to go to the menu and check box it for the LCD screen, it's on the viewfinder by default also.....
so i was between this one and the sony hx100v and i decided to go with this one because it has a lot of special effects that the hx100v didn't have.
What is the best compact, point and shoot? I need to be able to use it in extremely bright light
I'm in love with this guy
can you attach a mic to it

Why would you buy that handheld you reviewed earlier when you can get this for near same price...?
what would you recommend the SX40 HS or the Canon Rebel T2i
this is my dream camera for concert events!
@TheSnowTurtles Because you might not need a large zoom bridge camera like this. Some people just want a little compact that they can put in their pocket and take anywhere.
If we compare it to the Lumix FZ150 which one is better for shooting smooth hd videos ? :)
Loves the into man.👍
Yes! Finally a camera review!
I'm 11 and in my opinion this camera works pretty well, The zoom isn't too good though.. I'm hoping to upgrade to one with lenses soon:')
Which camera would you prefer?
- the Coolpix L810 or This one?
Please reply ? l:
I would definitely prefer the Nikon Coolpix P510 over this camera.
