Experimenting with different methods, trying different hardware, salts, food etc. and sharing the results is how the hobby evolves. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your success.
With all the coral color videos out there with endless products this is so refreshing... and I have not been adding anything lately (just Kalk and TM All For Reef) and my corals look their best. This is after a move 3 months ago and like 2 water changes since and I maybe tested kH 3 times. Maybe my tank is about to crash, who knows but things are looking good :)
Very nice! Gorgeous colors and corals! But can you elaborate a bit? 1) what are your nitrate and phosphate levels and how you maintain them? 2) you say you not dose individual elements but are you dosing two part? Or kh, calcium, magnésium I suppose? 3) how frequently and how much water change you do? 4)what lights and how much par you run? 5) have you try the dsr method? 6) do you also not feed your lps? For the salt I think you should better go with tropic Marin instead of fauna Marin it have less residus
1) you can see my exact nitrate and phosphate levels here: aquaticlog.com/aquariums/dtum/17/parameters 2) yes, I do run a kalk reactor and would sometimes top off calcium and magnesium 3) continuous water change of about 15-20% weekly 4) AI Blades on two tanks and EcoTech Radion on farm, 300 par 5) No 6) No
Everything is looking really good. You may have confused some newer hobbyist when you say you don't dose anything. With that type of SPS load you must be using some sort of 2 part or calcium reactor. The forest fire digi in the display is probably getting picked on by the Flame Angel. Mine did the exact thing but thrived in my other tank without the Flame Angel.
Hi, Phil! How’s the tanks? I try to follow you over on Instagram, but don’t always go on. I love your avatar also. My other love is my Ducati. Been in love since the 916, lol.
@@Messier87_M87 Hey how's it going. I post mostly on IG now. Tanks are doing well. My little nano has a bit of Dino's but besides that all well. Thanks! I had a Ducati Hypermotard but had to give up riding with my spine injury. Miss riding but reefing keeps my sane. 👍
@@Reefkpr1 Ahh man the hypemotard is such a fun bike, sorry to hear about your spine, that is one painful injury to live with. Glad the tanks are well. Ive been dealing with Dino’s for three years now. Gonna try UV next. Take care, and stay safe!
Yes, my bad on that - I did not even think about talking about kalkwasser/calcium/mag as that was too obvious for me, but you are right. It could be the flame angel, I do like it a lot :) worth it! :D curious if that's the case though
I want to start off by saying great looking tanks! I do have a question though? How often do you do the water changes and how big do you do at a time?.
Thank you for sharing your work , I am trying kalk to get my acros to start to grow and color up and also carbon dosing instead of feeding the corals and feeding the fish more so they can feed the corals . Maybe I should just go with WC as you are doing . I have a mixed tank and just starting with acros as I changed my lights to Radion g6 pro
I can 100% vouche for this as well. I've been doing between 30-40% water changes weekly and it's been the best route for me. That being said I could see that being a problem in a 300 gallon tank. My system is 80g and my brute mixing bucket is 30 gallons so its not too bad
Your videos seem to have been trending towards this more simplistic approach over the last year and it’s great to see. How has this approach changed your equipment and nutrient management? I recently removed my roller filter and replaced it with a chaeto refugium, and since then my corals have really improved polyp extension and colour. I do weekly 10% water changes alongside dosing of alk/ca/mg
Thanks, yes - slowly trying to focus on the fundamentals more and more. Makes you wonder if your corals would be even better looking if you remove your chaeto? :D
I feel that my alakalinity if its too high maybe 9dkh or more it eats away some sensitive corals; they start retracting their polyps and slowly STN from the bottom until they get pale.
I don't think that this is the problem, I've had high alk and as long as there's nothing else out of whack, it should not be the cause. Are your parameters on AquaticLog by any chance? I could take a look.
Hello. Great content. Ive been following you. Since your chat with adam from frag garage. May i ask what light model for your lps system behind you. And sps tank. Light schedule and what did you change in setting to video your tank. What camera and lenses are you using etc. I have been learning about reefing and now want to dive a bit into video and photography. Thanks in advance from Canada Will certainly order some frags off you in the near future.
Hi, I did a video recently on all my lighting but will try to shoot one soon where I'll go over my latest lighting schedule. I use Sony FX3 and a variety of G lenses by Sony. Welcome to the hobby!
Thank you for the video share! I looked for the answer of water change throughout comments which you said about 20% weekly. could you please elaborate how do you do that? is it done by hand or any auto doser? and how many litter per day (I mean your program)
Thanks, I have an automatic water change system setup using Versa. I should do a whole video on it soon. Basically I've calculated it so that within a week there's about 20% changed.
Do you notice any difference in Acropora colors between your AI Blade lit tank vs Radion lit tank? I am wondering which of the two I should go for for the next build. Thank you !
That's a very good question - I think there's a tiny difference between my two orange passions, but it could also be attributed to a different flow pattern or stronger light in one of the tanks. I am certain that just with blades one could get great results, but if you can mix and match - maybe even better
What about alkalinity and calcium? If you don't dose alkalinity how do you keep up with the kh demand? A tank like yours will easy consume 1-2dkh a day. If purely based on water change you will need to do like 30%-50% water change a day?
First off, not what you do is going to work for everyone. Find what works for you and stick to it. And doing large water changed does what you just stoped doing. Dosing trace elements is because doing small water changes doesn't replenish the elements thats needed in your tank that coral consume. The problem with this is become very expensive if you have a large tank.
Are they really needed? Check the dsr method, years without add them and without water change and stunning results! Also befor the icp.. We had very nice tanks full of acropora. Actually when I jsit did water change and had halides on my all tank I had ver y good results. Since I do icp.. Have all in optimal range I just get stn and other problems :-(
@tomg5405 Traces are needed when it comes to sps. Examples iron. Low iron cause dinos. Not everyone knows this. As for years ago. Yes people were not doing water changes but the end result was not good over a few months were they had to do large water changes. There was no one going years with out doing a water change. That's the difference. As for your stn issue I sure it's your ph. I have noticed that stable PH stops STN and RTN. Keeping ph at 8.2 to 8.5 sps are no longer stressed and stn and rtn comes to a complete stop.
@tomg5405 Yes, it's the drop at night that stress sps. My pH stays at 8.3 at night day 8.5. I dose saturated kalk at night as my total water evaporation.
Looks great but you said the key words the tank is ten years old I doubt that would be enough for a new tank but then again it just might be if you can do big enough water changes
Acro frags up top, some LPS and other SPS Some corals just get fussy while others thrive - but your lights look incredible, mine don't look anywhere as good@@TreasureCorals
Sorry but there is nothing informative here or statistically meaningful data. It's simply a 13 minute video to describe and single example of consistent water changes. Did you get lucky? Does the tank have good biodiversity compared to known standards? Are some elements missing that could improve the result or a provide resistance to a stress event? I used Reef Crystals for years and know for a fact that certain trace elements are non-existent in their mix and others are so di deficient that water changes alone could not suffice. Congrats on your results but I'm not confident that this is translatable to other tanks with a reasonable degree of expected success.
Fully agree. My opinion that unfortunately everything in our hobby is anecdotal, people make many claims but almost nothing has scientific backing. My point was - i followed many different regiments and surprisingly the best results I had was when I stopped adding stuff. Anecdotal? For sure. By the way Jason Fox uses Reef crystals, does not supplement anything and he knows his corals.

Interesting! Presume you still dose alk, calc and mag? When you say large water changes, what sort of percentage are we talking?
Thanks! I use kalkwasser as primary means of dosing kH and calcium. And add calcium and magnesium by NYOS when needed
Water change of 20% per week

Nice setup, I started using NYOS salts and I can't believe how wonderful it is and so clean! It dissolves fast in cold or heated water.
NYOS is a great brand

about 20% per week, continuous. Thank you for your kind words.

It is a continuous water change of about 15-20% per week total

I usually stir it and it goes away, I think this is normal
Beautiful!! No calcium/ alk dosing?

Doing kalkwasser, and add calcium and mag when needed
