you seem to have skipped that fact that the main reason your nitrate levels are 0 is because of the string algae in the pond

Great point, Daniel. We test the pond regularly and prior to this (when algae wasn't in the pond), the nitrates were still 0. But you're absolutely correct, the string algae will have been one of the reasons why the nitrate levels were at 0.
