    There's a difference between stealing someone's work and having inspiration from it

    • @karakuri100p
      @karakuri100p 7 лет назад +8

      Josh Gunn no that's the same,one only sounds more pleasant.Look what is stealing?It's basically taking something without the original owner knowing about it right?!So i recon many people don't know the artists who they take stuff from,so it's....And that's ok though just own it,and change things a long the way,making it your own

    • @tmills7374
      @tmills7374 7 лет назад +45

      karakuri100p There's a huge difference. For example if I took apple black with the current storyline, same characters, same plot, same everything, and put my name on it, that's stealing, but if I have my own comic and I'm reading apple black and I think "oh these characters use magic I think my characters should use magic too" that's drawing inspiration. See what I'm saying.

    • @mark009vn
      @mark009vn 7 лет назад +3

      Well... that'd be copyright infringement. Of course that'd be considered "stealing" as well, but if you steal per se 10% of the original work, then what would happen? Imo at the end of the day it all depends on intentions, are you "stealing" for some ulterior motives? Or are you "stealing" because you liked the ideas presented in the original work and would love to include it in your own?

    • @regalragaci7250
      @regalragaci7250 7 лет назад +3

      T Mills You are still stealing plot elements or items from series, inspiration is a sugarcoated version of stealing. Whenever you see something that inspires you and you use it to make art you are still stealing.
      Stealing is a positive thing. Not a negative.

      Regal Ragaci No stealing and inspiration are completely different, think of it like how goku came from a doomed planet just like superman but yet their stories are completely different after that, toriyama didnt steal anything from DC he was just inspired by it.

    I 100% agree with all the points you addressed i needed this video to shown for along time. i strive to make my story original and unique even tho its an action manga so things i did have been done before but the way i do things make it more iconic to my story. the one thing that people compare to my story the most is the fact that i have a wall surrounding a massive part of the world and people say its aot but it really is nothing like it....anyway i strive to be great one day....nice video btw love your vids👊

    Honestly I don't worry too much about originality in ideas, because who knows if someone out there has had the same idea and has drawn it or wrote it down. When coming up with ideas of course we're gonna use shit we've seen whether we realize or not. I notice it in my own ideas, but I don't care. I do try to change my idea a little bit if I notice it's way too similar too something else, but just enough so it's not an exact copy. In manga or comics, you really only have to worry about popular comics. If only a couple people have seen it than who cares? Being original to someone personally only means that he or she has never seen it before or possibly they did but didn't acknowledge it.

    Originality hasn't really existed in LONG time, just look at DragonBall and how that borrowed ideas from Journey to the West; but it really isn't a problem to borrow ideas, sometimes you can create better things from a previously original idea.

    I definitely agree with what you said. Naruto isn't original because there has been plenty of Anime that revolve around ninjas before it. What makes it stand out is the execution of the anime, and the ways they interpret what it is influencing them. A lot of stuff that is used by popular anime that are considered "original" is people taking things that already exist, and putting their own spin on it. I agree with your statement "Nothing is 100% or 0% original" because while it sounds kind of contradictory, it's very true.

      Ed Rodriguez If you want advice not by asking someone read or watch examples e.g Fist of north star, Afroman, Jojo part1,5 or 6, Champloo and if you want to improve sad scenes don't always give them last words that's a cliche and if you don't include that it makes it more realistic. And don't make happy ending cheesy like Fairy Tail.

    Originality has disappeared a long time ago. Can anyone honestly claim they made up 100% of every small little detail about their art or their story or whatever with a straight face? I mean Steve Jobs didn't invent computers he invented a different kind of computer. So basically if anyone is a thief, then everyone is a thief, including the "perfect" people who accuse us of being one.

    Totally agreed, also i think that when you want to make something like either Movies, Anime, Mangas or Games and you are a fan and admire another work sooo much, its almost inevitable to try not to get inspired by an element of it. I am totally inspired by Attack on Titan and isayama I am such a fan of them, and on my universe which haves many stories/manga, one of the stories i was heavily inspired by Attack on Titan. even if i love that series i try to Respect and not get inspired too much. for now i have like maybe 2 or 3 similar elements of AOT and i hope and try to keep it that way

    I'd say originality is a unique combination of already existing content...
    For example Evangelion is very original because it's a very interesting combination of the Mecha Genre and the psychological Genre while having elements of Christian symbolism. ..
    The reason why series like Berserk, 20th Century boys, Monster, Vinland Saga and Taiyo Matsumoto's Tekkonkinkreet are often seen as original is because the artists take reference from outside of the manga industry furthering the complexity in their work and showing a more broad understanding of the world overall

    I agree. Sadly, so many people on this one Webtoon seem to think the creator did a BNHA rip off or a fan fic because both words have super powers and both worlds have drugs that affect said super powers… Even though the powers aren’t the same, the story and world itself aren’t the same, and the story being told isn’t the same. Everyone seems to forget all this happened in X-Men first. Does that mean BNHA is a rip off or a fan fic of X-Men? No. The similarities are so small that to me, you might as well say every story that has dragons in it is exactly the same. It crazy to think that because some stories have 1 element that is similar to another means it’s a rip off. I already know my story is going to be called a rip off of BNHA because it has super powers in it too. :/

I drew Red Hood at first and then took the hood, took every design off of it and made my own designs. I don't call that stealing but drawing his hood with the designs and placing it on something else is stealing

    After sitting down and listening, I understand the perspective now. For example, in my next manga, I have a species of human beings who lose their life and get revived, now having exceptional power the mc being one of those people, is a special case. Not everyone can access this. No, it's not an original idea as it may have been done already in the past, but it can be original (at least once it's executed.)

  • @gus6905
    @gus6905 7 лет назад +1

    When people truly use their imagination they can reach the level of originality very high on the scale. Attack on Titan for example; the author created this manga to portray the idea that the scariest creatures in existence are HUMANS. Of course it's just an idea and it is the cornerstone of his series.

I couldn't take that idea and use it in the same way I could take it and make the whole book about spider riders but its on the bug size level where they're the soldiers of a spider kingdom fighting against the ant riders from the Ant kingdom of these warring fairy people.

    Tbh nothing is origional when we create stories we take inspiration from the stories we love some of us can create something new by combining all of them together and some just copy paste and just change the setting and characters for example naruto one piece and fairytale have one thing in common taking inspiration from dragon ball but then they're some that take inspiration and deconstruct it an example fullmetal alchemist brotherhood and hunter x hunter so nothing is origional it just depends on how you approach it as an artist

    Ur example for naruto was a lil weak if u as me i'd say a more closer thing that's more similar to naruto is Hunter x hunter
    Chunin Exams = Hunter Exams
    Tonpa = Kabuto (been through the exam multiple times and is a rookie crusher)
    Sasuke = Kurapika (trying to get revenge for the destruction of their clans, but get a powerup due to their red-like eyes)
    Orochimaru = Hisoka (both go after powerful child during chunin exams, personality)
    Tsunade = Biscuit (hide their age with their nen/chakra. powerful mentor, both very physically strong)
    There are also random plot developments and character designs that Kishimoto continues to take from Hunter x Hunter later on, like Orochimaru becoming an anti-hero later in the war, like Hisoka during Greed Island, and the first Hokage's Buddha abilities are exactly the same as Netero's.
    Overall i think both series are pretty decent

    You went too far, you basically said "oh this story has a main character not original but he's Interesting so that's original" or "this story takes place on a planet how unoriginal but it's not the earth we know original". These are the basics of writing you can't compare this is original or unoriginal. Cliches are what are shown as unoriginal or original. Now the title of this is 100% true because no matter how good a story is it will have something that's not original because it's Impossible not too. Saying that however you should not write a story and just try to be original. The characters, plot and world are what make up a story, not if it's just original. Sure they go hand and hand but original truly should come second. Finally for all you that say original is not a thing it is, you just can't find it. Everyone always says we just reuse old ideas and your right we do, that's what inspiration comes from but original is still out there. You just can't see it. I'm not mocking you or putting you down I'm saying if it was that easy to be original everyone would be. Originally is so hard to come by because alot has been done but just think back to the 1900's, I'm sure people said everything was done already and guess what it wasn't. We can't see what's ahead because it's not there yet. you can not just sit down and say I'm going to be original, originally only comes on it's own and can not be forced. So don't worry about being 100% original, just worry about being you and making your story to the best of your ability

    • @conankudo9957
      @conankudo9957 7 лет назад +6

      YES!, I totally agree. his examples weren't convincing, nobody claims, that creating a shonen is unoriginal, it's about various story elements and characters, which are told over and over again in the same way in many works, and at this point, it becomes unoriginal repetitive or even a cliche. It's about playing with the expectations of the readers and to surprise them. It's legit to bring up known elements, because the way YOU tell it makes it original.

    I mean, yeah, sure nothing is original and it’s totally okay when you’re inspired and appreciating someone’s art, but when you basically high-jack that artists style as your own and not become inspired by their work to form your own art style, then nothing you do or could do would be your own, in a sense cause you’re just ...borrowing from someone else and getting credit for being a copy of them, basically :/ if you were upset about it, you should’ve expected people to form that opinion because every great mangaka has their own unique style and you just consistently copy Kubo from what I’ve seen of your work so far :/

      There are clear Bleach influences in his style but it’s definitely not a carbon copy of Kubo.

    Here's an interesting point about the Orochimaru v. Voldemort comparison. It was impossible for Masashi Kishimoto (the writer of Naruto) to copy the character off of JK Rowling and vise - versa. The manga had begun in 1999 and Harry Potter was released in 1997, but that was only in England and Japan respectively. The Harry Potter books would be translated by 2003 almost 2 years after the character of Orochimaru was already introduced.

      Maybe you're right. However, you're assuming Masashi couldn't speak english then... maybe he could speak english when Harry Potter was released.

    Original vs unoriginal.
    Now, in Boku no hero come a chara, who was originally dead.
    The people say, this is the "obito-move", because he is a well knowing example of this move.
    But the action, that a "dead" person showed later up alive and probally as a enemy isnt new to the point of naruto.
    By the show: "mighty ducks" was a duck, who "died" at the beginning and showed up at the end. I only didnt know, if he showed up as a enemy or ally (it was to many years ago^^).

    I would say your detailed on semantics of the discussion... Your almost pointing to archetypes being the reason nothingness original. You know what being original is bro. You could easily just say your Manga isn't a Manga. It is a black and white novelty visual watch. Literally make up your own form of expressing a story. And not be a devils advocate of saying well I'm not original because I'm writing a book. Books have been written. So let me just change the name of what I call a book, for the sake of originality to not be 100 percent original. But take it easy on the comprehensiveness of debate.

    Could you perhaps make a video on what to do when drawing is just not fun anymore? Or have you never experienced that feeling before? Right now I really want to draw and I don't know what it is about my art but I just don't find drawing fun anymore, and it's really discouraging me. Any tips?

      I know how you feel. I've been there back and forth. However, take it as a positive thing.
      Whenever I get into that phase in life, I would take a time off, do some other stuff. This could last few weeks to a whole month. However, once I get back, and started drawing again, I started to see flaws in my old work and then relearn the things that I thought I am already good at. After a week, my art work improved a lot more.
      So just take your time, don't frustrate yourself over how you should be drawing right now, instead take a time off, do other stuff. Wait until you are inspired again.

    Something to think about:
    - A young person who hasn't consumed a lot of media yet in their life reads your manga/story: "Wow, this is amazing and so original! I love it!"
    - An old veteran who has already consumed a lot of media in their lifetime reads your manga/story: "Hmm... meh. None of this is original - I've seen all these tropes and clichés before. Boring."
