I share your joy in visiting needlework shops in Utah. I live in London, Ontario. I was able to visit both Pine Needles and Craft Center of Fine Stitchery three weeks ago. I definitely helped boost the Salt Lake economy. 😂 Next year, when I return to Salt Lake, my priority is visiting Shepherd's Bush.
As always, valuable information. My favorite completer piece is a jean jacket. I have 3 of them - dark wash, lighter wash, and white. I would add hoodies to my list of completer pieces. I prefer them to sweatshirts because they’re easier to take off when the temperatures get warmer during the day.

Barb Morris, you beat me to it! I have a white oxford cloth 3/4 length sleeve shirt that is my go-to completer piece for the warmer days of spring and summer. Its slight texture adds some interest, and it’s lighter, both in terms of weight and thickness, than a denim jacket. (I do have a blue denim jacket though!) The shirt is great for some sun protection as well as for those overly air-conditioned shops and restaurants. Best of all? I found it at a consignment store for about $10. 😊

I love a blazer, too, their tailoring is a gal’s best friend. I always feel chic in a blazer, but not so much in cardigans, which can look a bit frumpy. I have difficulty with outfits in the hot months when I can’t wear a completer, or third, piece. I’m always looking for summer linen or cotton blazers that are unlined, or lined with a breathable fabric, not polyester.

Nothing like a good blazer or jacket - and in the more affordable category, Loft has good ones . I have had a denim jacket in my rotation for around 35 years - not always the same one, as I have updated (or sized up as necessary!!), but wouldn't be without one.
Banana Republic has a similar blazer (the Captain’s Blazer) to the Veronica Beard one, but in much better fabrics, no sweaty polyester lining (breathable rayon instead) and the outer fabric is half wool/half poly, not 100% poly like the VB one. I just got mine (navy, but they have black, too) and I love it. I think the price is actually lower than the VB one, too. I also got their “white” (ivory) one in this style, which is cotton. No affiliation to this brand, or any other, I have just been loving it since they improved their fabrics.

As a 75 year old retired woman, I have always tried to have completer pieces. My trip to the mall yesterday resulted in no purchases. The stores that I went simply had tops and pants. There was very little of anything else. The third pieces that were available did not appeal to me. For me, it’s becoming much harder to be well dressed. Thanks for all of your great suggestions. I wish the stores offered a greater variety.

I gave up on denim jackets in the 1980s because they always seem the wrong warmth, either not warm enough or too warm. I've realized that I need a soft texture next to my skin if I want warmth. A fleece-lined or flannel-lined denim jacket would work for me, but they're rare, and it has to be a petite plus size, so it's fugedaboudit.
I have a lot of denim jackets. In different colors. But I do have three blue ones. One cropped and two Levi denim jackets. I’m not sure how I ended up with two. One might have been my husband’s. But it’s mine now. I also have a lot of blazers. But I don’t wear them as often. I’m more casual. I do have a graduation coming up. And I’m still not sure what I’ll be wearing. But I will be taking a completer piece with me. Just in case the air is too cold. And it always is for me. I used to own a windbreaker I’m not sure what happened to it. But it did save me one night at one of my granddaughter’s softball games. It kept me warm when the wind was whipping. I think I may have had another jacket under it. That’s when we still lived in Ohio. And it was summer. I’m not sure why it was so cold at that game.

I use a necklace or statement earrings for a completer piece. Even if I'm wearing a blazer, I usually take it off inside, so where does that leave you? Completer-less. So I usually wear a statement piece of jewelry, whether I'm wearing a jacket or not. A great hat could serve the same purpose.

I use a necklace or statement earrings for a completer piece. Even if I'm wearing a blazer, I usually take it off inside, so where does that leave you? Completer-less. So I usually wear a statement piece of jewelry, whether I'm wearing a jacket or not. A great hat could serve the same purpose.
