No one played guitar like Gary. His touch and tone was so unique. Hearing the first few notes and you knew it was him. He has left a great legacy of timeless songs and memories. He was Golden.

Had the pleasure of seeing REO 4 times with Gary in their heyday and once after his departure. Always a great band, and the guitarist they have now is awesome! But.... there has only ever been ONE GARY RICHRATH! He was one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time, and so vastly under rated! He could take the sappiest pop love song, and tear a big gaping hole in it with a solo that was both beautiful and terrifying at the same time! Rest in peace Gary, you are sorely missed and will always be deeply loved for your contribution to the soundtrack of my life! And thanks to Kevin and the band for keeping his legacy alive by continuing on! Any one who thinks REO is past tense, needs to think again! Greatness never fades!
God Bless, and KEEP RIDIN' THE STORM OUT!

Gary was the Inspiration for me, his churps , pick slides ,Chromatic Slurs and then his Use of the Pentatonic Scales were amazing i loved hearing him much much more i loved watching him he really was not a very technical player, what made him the original player was the lack of professional training and just doing his own things , creative things that covered up those things masterfully, he will be missed....One of the Greats in my book...wow i seen them 6 times at least with gary.

I am truly sad for his untimely end but Gary Richrath was never given his due in rock and roll guitarists and I have yet to hear a better one. One of the original founding members to REO Speedwagon and he held his own for many years. His contribution should not be ignored due to his weakness that many performers sadly succumb to with all the pressures of the road and that lifestyle. Not an excuse but look at the whole picture of ones life not just that bad issues for tabloids. I do hope he has rest now and whatever drove him has stopped and he has found some peace. Hopefully the Storm Out is now done. Peace Gary.

He was by far the best guitarist I have ever seen in concert. He WAS REO, and after he left, the rock left, and they went to ballads. They are nothing with out him. Rock and Roll heaven is a better place with Gary joining the greats who went before him. RIP, I love you, Gary.

I met him in my teens. I was a huge fan, but he treated me like a punk kid. I was crushed. When the rest of REO realized what he had done, they lit into him. It was as if a light came on for him, and he realized the difference in gravity of the moment for him and myself. He apologized and spent the next hour making sure he lived up to the expectations i had built of him in my head. He went from an idol, to a man, to a REAL inspiration in a matter of minutes. Thanks Gary for never truly forgetting where you came from. You will live in your music forever. May God bless and keep you.

Here it is 2023 and I still listen to Gary's guitar playing in about every REO's songs. Gary was always a "HUGE" inspiration to me since the early 70s. I had the oportunity to tour with them on a short stint helping set up the sound equipment way back in the early 70s. I got to talk with Gary a few times about guitars, amps, and other sound equipment. Gary taught me some techniques of using the wah~wah pedal for guitar tricks and tones. A real down to earth gentleman and a "REAL" Rock~N~Roller for sure!!!

This news was truly a shock, one of the first songs I learned on guitar was ridin' the storm out. Only the Strong Survive was my life story as well as a great song to play. Gary will always be one of the best guitarists in my opinion. (The reason I have so many Les Pauls) and the reason I will always play ridin the storm out. Thanks Gary, from a skinny blonde in Wyoming, to a fat blonde in Colorado, you made a positive difference! Peace Out!

I'm 52, female, and out of "the blue" picked up guitar and began teaching myself to play. One day my husband started playing all the "oldies" of REO. As I was practicing chords, I'm watching the REO videos playing and I fall "in love" with Gary's style. Captivating and AWESOME. He SO looked "in love" with his "guitar/s". That "cheeky" smile and how his hips would get into "the playing, too sexy. Love him. Now that my husband has "refreshed" my memories of REO of long ago, I'm back "in love". Working on Riding The Storm Out right now, and HAVING a blast with it. I strongly suggest to ANYONE if you have even five minutes a day, get yourself a guitar (doesn't have to be top of the line, just cheap, to begin with, to practice) and everyday learn something on it. It won't (I promise) take long, week/two, and you will be playing. AND you WILL discover a whole "new side" to yourself, it truly opens the creative flood gates inside one's self. AND you can create your OWN "songs" melodies doesn't have to sound like anyone else it's yours, it sounds like "YOU". I'm only four weeks in and I'm playing, learning more and more, love practicing, I've "come up" with some little tunes I wrote and play for my two dogs that never leave my side and have endured all my practices. Understand, I've always loved music always wanted to sing, play anything, tambourine, triangle, anything. Couldn't understand how to read music in middle school, felt like I had two left hands, so quickly put "music" in rear view mirror, "forever" except for listening to it. Just happened my neighbor asked me to store a guitar for him until he moved and i had it in corner of closet for weeks, until one day (long story) I had it in my hands to move it, sat down just for shits/giggles, and waalaa, began to learn it. Looked up utube vids to learn first, basics, notes, chords, strumming, etc. You quickly realize (I did) you don't have to be born "musically gifted" to learn this. Also, it's much easier from the comfort of my home rather than the classroom in 6th grade with the "teacher" hovering over "you" for an hour. To sum it up, I say go to a pawn shop, buy a cheap one, learn some notes, chords, and you will "feel" the "artist" inside you come alive. Believe me, you can just play for YOURSELF (and your pets, lol) and you will love it. Everyday you pick it up it's like "wow" I'm actually producing music with my own two hands, believe me, "it's" a miracle here folks. My husband is in "shock" that I'm playing, I don't think he can believe it, but he likes it. He jokes, had he known that's all "it took" to "make me happy" he would have bought a guitar shop back in the "earlier days". WHO knew. Anyways, obviously I'm encouraging ANYONE no matter if you're 82, if you can, give it a try. If you can't afford any guitar as of now, you can still learn from videos, take notes, practice on a piece of board, tie yarn strings to it to learn notes, chords, until. I did. Had husband cut me a board around size of guitar neck put (any kind) strings on, yarn/ducktape, or fishing line/nails, etc. just for something "handy" and smaller to practice in car or anywhere. Give it a try people, I don't think ya can regret "it". If you are a music lover like myself, it will bring Joy, Joy, Joy to you. Peace!

I'd seen REO in the early 80's when i was 14. Wasnt really into individual sounds of the instruments at that time. When i was in my early 30's, i was driving OTR and the solitude gave me plenty of time to really lusten to the music i grew up on and started listening to the individual instrument sounds and singers voices. That was about 20 years ago and that's when i noticed hoq geeat guitar player Gary Ritchrath was. It amazes me when i get into discussions of who some of the greatest guitar players are and his name never comes uo until i menrion his name.

One of the best guitarists ever still doesn't get enough credit I could go on and on should be in the Rock N Roll hall of fame enough said

Gary was a true ROCK STAR ☆☆☆, seemed he and his LP were one!! My favorite guitarist. He set the bar high, bar none. Not to mention his songwriting and singing, a fine musician. ♡RIP GARY, you left too soon!!

Got my first guitar for Christmas in 1981. My Mom who didn't have a lot of money saved up and bought it for me. I was 14 years old and said, "instead of air-guitaring to be like Gary", how bout you learn how to play.I took lessons and still play today, but nowhere near as good as Gary did! RIP
