A Taiwanese friend told me about this game a few months ago and I just saw it in local game stores here in Taiwan. It was a big piece of gaming nostalgia for him when he was younger. Unbeknownst to him I secretly bought the game for his birthday in a couple of days. He's gonna love it.
The sprite artwork is just absolutely gorgeous to look at and the game’s a real blast to play. The difficulty surprisingly doesn’t pull back any punches and even on normal it’s still a bit of a struggle, which I totally appreciate.
Having to unlock easy mode by needing to not only beat the game, but then play more is perplexing to me. That being said this game looks far more fun than I thought it'd be at first glance!
It's unlocked because it takes all difficulty out of the game. You have infinite lives. The difficulty of monsters isn't much different. You're basically unlocking infinite lives.
@@michaelshourd653 accessibility options should NEVER be an unlock. This game's really hard, and even with the checkpoint system it can be really intimidating to newcomers. Easy mode being unlockable actually does deter some people from playing it, and a game this good deserves as many people playing it as possible.
The original Pocky & Rocky is in my top 10 SNES games of all time. Regardless of the strange decisions by the developers, it is a very fun game. I was surprised to learn that some of the developers that made the SNES version came back to work on this game.
@@Crcvmbdfl this is in regards to the censorship I’m not entirely sure if they altered the sprite of the character but since the gameplay your running n shooting that’s probably not gonna matter... any ways, the western version has one of the characters cleavage covered up via the character select screen when you obtain that character.
I just don't understand the philosophy of locking the multiplayer mode behind the completion of the game. Makes no sense and devalues the game on such a high level.
This particular game was always harder with 2p due to the fact you could bash each other off the stage and fight for or gimp your build with certain resources, so it does make some sense you should try 1p first. I am so hyped for this, this is the game I always said they should have had on NSO from the start and now I can get a physical copy, with local co-op.... Feels like x-mas.
The game really is more of a sequel than a remake. While the first level and most of the second are more or left lifted from the SNES original, after that, it goes in a completely new and original direction, with entirely new stage designs for the remainder of the game.
Yeah I did hear that it was effectively a new game but without having played the original myself I couldn't elaborate on the point too much. Good to hear the effort that they've put into it. Glen
This game's great. I feel like its thunder got stolen by Shredder's Revenge, but this game does just as good a job on following up Pocky and Rocky on the SNES as Shredder's Revenge did for Turtles in Time.
I grew up with the Snes games and the Kiki Kaikai arcade games and I always thought that any sequel or re-release would benefit with twin stick support so a shame that it's still not incorporated. However, some may argue that it would change a defining factor of the series. Maybe. I'd still like the choice.
This is a remake just as much as "a link between worlds" or "Sonic mania" are remakes. it uses some old locations and is set in the same world, but with a new story, new levels, 3 extra playable characters, new modes, new moves and specials attacks, and new bosses, this is a new game
I suck at games like this but if I ever find this game on sale, I will get it. Presentation and setting are absolutely my jam and I can't wait to battle through this game with a friend. EDIT: You have to unlock co-op and easy mode? That's so stupid.
Co-op is rather like hard mode for this game, competing for resources and the ability to push each other to your deaths makes it slightly challenging. Fun as hell though.
I'd have been all over this if it had a twin-stick shooter control scheme option. Great review. I'll keep my eye on the Sunday Sales videos for a price drop I reckon.
Same here, man. I really wish this was a proper twin-stick shooter along the lines of something like Nuclear Throne. As it stands however, I’ll buy it for sure, but probably in a future sale rather than at the full £26.99 price tag.
I tried to play this with my brother on the SNES and later with my boyfriend on the SNES mini and it was too hard. It’s disappointing to hear you have to unlock BOTH easy mode and multiplayer. I guess I’ll wait for a sale.
I had been so excited to play this game. I'm still in contact with a friend who I played the original with on SNES. Once we saw that you had to actually beat the game solo in order to even play 2 player, we decided to just not get it at all and play the old one on emulator together. So disappointed.
You'll be happy to know you can now unlock co-op with a cheat code. At the main menu, press left left left left, right right right right, left right, left right, left right, left right. You'll see the free play option unlock. You'll only have Pocky and Rocky to play though, you gotta beat story mode twice to get all the other characters.
4:25 The game is making you have to play better and be a better player, you have to unlock the luxury of easy mode first by going through the hardships first! This is a classic challenging game so making you have to unlock easy mode is part of the games design.
It is really sad that we have to play through story mode or collect 10.000 coins before multiplayer mode is unlocked, what a unnecessery bummer ide.... also I would really have needed Easy mode to begin with xD
5:50 This isn’t a remake of the original Pocky & Rocky it’s a new game/remaining you may recognize certain parts, enemy’s and bosses but overall this is a brand new game with brand new characters and levels.
Looks really interesting. Actually nice art this time as the nice pixel art is beautiful seems to be over used lately . Some pixel art versus today's standards are crud. This one looks nice , the little rocky tail and the font is so nice. I'll add it to my wish list as it's new to me and looks fun for sale single player
Looking at recent trash-masters like Sonic Collection and Blade Runner, this game is extremely well made. Its like RE2 reimagining. They should patch it up so you have co-op from the start, but other than that...9/10. I'm on PlayStation, but always check on your reviews.
Totally agree that it would be great to have a choice between the new and old graphics... So many games do, Dragon Quest 11, Mana, even Alex bloody Kid... And don't get me started on Links Awakening :[
It's impossible to do that because it is a completely new game, none of the levels are the same as the original (even the first level has differences).
@@tonberrymasta Alex Kidd remake had an old graphics option even though it has differences from the original game(bosses and some assets are new or different). I just don't think the option would work here cause it's already sprite art and the sprite art looks AMAZING.

So you can only unlock easy mode after you finish the game on normal… Kind of defeats the purpose eh? Very strange choice. Anyway, cheers for the review!
He did say you save points between runs, so if you beat a runs worth of points but can't beat the game, that is why it is unlockable at that point value.
The SNES version was fairly hard and was based around obscure Japanese folklore and yokai creatures. It never got more than a cult following until the recent retro gaming boom.
