I highly recommend Arcade Paradise if you liked playing arcade games in the 80s. Game has kind of a funny story where you're the disappointing son slowly transforming his dad's sleepy laundromat into a popular arcade. Has some really addicting 80s style games in it too.

That’s a fact!
For people who like Donkey Kong Country, I highly recommend Kaze and the Wild Masks (which also has a physical release by the way). It might look like a typical modern indie game but the way the character controls and the mechanics are heavily based on the original DKC games. Level design as well. It's almost a new DKC game with a different skin.
I would put New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe in this kind of category. It's a Mario 2D platformer, lots of familiarity for gamers that like the early Mario stuff.

As someone who started gaming in the 80s and owned both Sega and Nintendo consoles; this video is one reminder of many; why I love rhe Switch. Great picks and reasoning behind then (I was a bit sticter by not including games wirh graphics that could not be done on retro hardware). YOU SHOULD TOTALLY DO A VIDEO ON ALL THE MODERN RETRO CONTROLLERS THAT WORK ON THE SWITCH. 8bitdo used to make NES and SNES accurate ones, which got re colored to avoid Nintendo going after them, but they still rock. Also Retrobits Sega Saturn and Genesis Bluetooth and 2.4gz Controllers ar great.

I would like to mention both Super Cyborg and Blazing Chrome - two love letters to the run 'n' gun genre and clearly inspired from the Contra series. Both have retro-style sprite graphics and have just the right amount of challenge to keep things fun and replayable.
Blazing Chrome is a delight to play in one sitting!

HUNTDOWN absolutely obliterates Blazing Chrome and Super Cyborg.
Wild Guns Reloaded is absolutely fantastic. It's got two new characters with interesting play styles, new gun options, better explosive effects, and new set of secret stages. Natsume's updated re-releases on Switch can't be missed.
My favorite RUclipsr!!!!! SoR2 was always my fav beat ‘em up, UNTIL I played 4. That game is 🔥 To this date, it’s the ONLY game I’ve bought DLC for

Ok here's a less obvious recommendation: Dragon Quest Builders. The game is basically a modern game: plays like a newer game, graphics like a newer game, high-quality music. HOWEVER, it is such a beautiful homage to the 8-bit DQ1 game. The music is all these amazing remixes, every enemy, every item, a bunch of the scenarios, even just having that feeling of EXPLORING. Exploring in a true way, and just having the wonder of now knowing what's out there. In that way, although the gameplay is technically "thoroughly modern" it gives you that FEELING you had when you were a kid playing an RPG for the first time, while highlighting the emotive resonance of nostalgia by so perfectly mimicking the style and world of DQ1.

The console I am currently collecting/playing games for is the Nintendo 64! These were certainly fun times before the pandemic and DK Oldies came, so then the prices skyrocketed like crazy!

I like how “Green Hill Zone Theme” was playing for the duration of the video, almost like it was playing on the TV while you showcased the Switch.
I like this question, this should be a series. Because of the portable nature of the Switch, the device invites quicker pick up and play games such as Arms, and Wario Ware: Get it Together. These games are not ports, but built for the machine specifically and are best enjoyed portably, the way the Switch is intended to be played. Wario Ware plays the most like a modern Game & Watch and due to a few factors, one of them being Game and Wario, I think that connection is very real between these two properties.
I am _that_ old. Wario Ware: Get it Together is one of my most cherished games currently.
Arms though has grown on me and has become my current favorite just because of how much of an arcade game it is and also how little it demands from me, the player. It’s gorgeous and fun to pick up and play on an early sunny Saturday morning. It’s essentially Punch-Out meets Virtual-On dipped in Wario sauce. Corporations will tell us that we need sugar and chemical cereal to feel like a kid again these days. I say play Nintendo games on a Switch with natural lighting beaming into you room in the space of time you have to yourself in an early morning. Wear some good headphones and get immersed!
I’m glad you’ve discovered the Switch! Splatoon 3 is also designed to be played portably even with motion controls! For more games that feel like classic games, I recommend the Bethesda shooters, _all of them!_ Strange Brigade is a must! And Battle Zone (an incredible remake of the Atari classic) from the company that made Strange Brigade!

I was playing the re-release of Advance Wars 1&2, and it's pretty good! The next day I played the original on GBA, and you can tell that the re-release kept the original gameplay intact, with some great improvements in the graphic and sound quality (obviously). :)

The Messenger is another great metroid-like that I played on the switch. And for similar retro ninja vibes but with difficulty cranked way up, Cyber Shadow is great too.

My recommendation would be Burgertime Party. While its not amazing or anything i just think its still cool burgertime got a new game and its pretty innovative too. Has tons of modes and content to mess with
Another one would be the Blaster Madter trilogy which id say play even better than the original games.
And lastly the Yooka Layle games, especially the Impossible Lair, as that game really taps into the nostalgia you feel for Donkey Kong Country
So many good ones. I don’t know if guacamelee would be considered a “new” old school game but I love that one! Also The Messenger was really good. Oh and Owlboy. Definitely one of the most creative ones.

Kaze and the Wild Masks was really good and definitely a modern throwback.

Timmy is the nice boy with the Sega game...The other kid. Obsessed with bread bag clips and ketchup water...I said ketchup water!...I don't know...something the new kids drink."
I bought all 5 of these games day one. I love me some indies. Sonic Mania is the best 2D Sonic I've played EVER. Metroid Dread was an overall great experience, EXCEPT for E.M.M.I. Cuphead was simply mind blowing. Reminded me of another boss rush game called Alien Soldier. SOR 4 was just as amazing as SOR 2. Lastly, Pocky and Rocky Re-shrined took forever to come out on physical, but it was worth the wait. My top 3 favorite Switch game. There's a reason I look forward to indies way more than I do AAA games. Amazing list of games.

Great video! I own and have played/beaten most of these games (except Cuphead) on Switch and 100% agree. These are excellent modern classics!
A Part 2 would be great! I highly recommend *Bloodstained Curse of the Moon* and *Bloodstained Ritual of the Night* as both are great love letters to Castlevania games.
I'd even say *Yooka-Laylee* is worth playing if you're a Banjo-Kazooie fan. It isn't nearly as good as the Banjo games, but if you enjoy retro 3D platformers, it is still worth a look. Although, I'd say *A Hat In Time* is easily one of the best '90s style 3D collect-a-thons on the Switch.
*Shovel Knight* and *Axiom Verge* have both been around awhile, but they are still definitely worth playing if you're a fan of retro gaming.

I have been on a huge retro binge but honestly, I still haven't come around to the sonic games. I played them so much as a kid that nowadays I just can't pkay them anymore XD. Also, I find that Super Mario games have a bit more of an exploring element and better level design for my tastes and I tend to prefer that nowadays instead of an action platformer. Love Rocket Knight though and that game is as linear as it comes but the added mobility of the rocket pack together with the "3d" elements of some of the puzzles makes it somewhat more interesting though that final boss makes no sense and feels like playing a different game altogether. Not the night in space but that TV pig box thingy. Anyway, I had completely forgotten that game existed despite having played it to death when I was a kid. Finishing it now was a nostalgia kick. Thank you retro gaming consoles.
Because I played the heck out of Sonic games as a kid, I actually found I needed to take a huge break from them as an adult too. But then one day it just felt right to go back to them. So, perhaps one day that feeling will pop up for you too :)
there is a great series of 2d platformer on the switch, its called dadish (dad radish finds his children through levels). If you see this retro bird i hope you check them out.

I think your list of recommendations is really solid. I would say indie games have kind of been what's kept the spirit of retro gaming alive in the modern era. Since AAA companies focus on bigger, shinier, and newer games, the indie games go off and do their own thing, part of which is trying to recapture the magic of games of the past. There are also a ton of Metroidvanias.
It's actually Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom. Close though. And yes, it's really good.

Note: there's two versions of Bubble Bobble 4 Friends. One got that name and a later game got the addition "The Baron is back" to the title. The first game seems impossible to find in stores. That game came out in late 2019. Baron is Back came out in late 2020 I think.
All these games are kind of sequels/successors to classic retro games. I wish I could recommend brand new games that are not sequels/successors. So brand new games that really got the retro game feeling. Cuphead is such a game but that game is one of the games in this video.
One game that I also can recommend is: Disney Illusion Island. Not yet released. It's coming in late July. Got that retro feeling for Donald Duck and his friends.
For anyone who wants their butt kicked, play Cathedral… I made it all the way to the final boss and had to settle for seeing someone beat it on RUclips lol

Thank you, a new convert. Been eyeballing Switch for a while but never got it as been so disappointed with modern consoles for some time, ps3 is my current latest console. This has reawakened my hope in modern games, thanks.
After hearing some good things about it, I was seriously pleasantly surprised with Kaze and the Wild Masks. Outstanding 2d platformer. And I know its on several other consoles and several years old but Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Liar is an incredible platforming game! Both are top notch platformers.
The Gunvolt series is also great games for mega man x fans
I agree with this list because I have most of these retros. But I usually go after retro inspired indie games that are new titles though. If you love Zelda from the SNES era I would recommend Blossom Tales 1&2 because it is really good. Also Asterborg I think , a Genesis inspired game, 80's racer an Outrun inspired game and of course the Shovel Knight. Oh the Wonder Boy games are cool to 😊

I prefer my retro games to be 8bit, a big reason being the nostalgia of the audio. Love those beeps and bloops. So for those like me i would recommend Shovel Knight. It’s a great combination of Mega Man and Super Mario 3 and Zelda 2. Also recommend Alwa’s Awakening. Excellent metriodvania with amazing audio. Also Infernax and the Messenger for the melee action fans. I don’t think they have physical copies though

The problem with that game: will not qualify since it's a re-release. But otherwise it's a great remake/remaster! If you're a Zelda fan it's a must have!

Celeste was pretty fantastic! If it were an actual old game, it'd be one of the most expensive games today, the game was highly satisfying!!
The upcoming Sea of Stars should be included in part two, based on the excellent demo. I cannot wait for this whole game. It’s a great RPG.

Blazing Chrome if you like 16 bit Contra, Super Cyborg if you prefer 8 bit Contra (no physical yet), A Hole New World or Cathedral for action platform fans. For Retro feel on a modern(ish) console, either the Switch or PS4 dominate.

I love Sonic games, but for some reason Sonic Mania doesn't really click with me, especially the constant bonus rounds. I prefer the recent 3D games.
Cuphead looks fantastic and is really challenging, maybe a bit too challenging.
I never liked Metroid, so I haven't tried Dread either.
I might try Pocky and Rocky, looks pretty fun. I did play Wild Guns and that was kind of nice.
Streets of Rage 4 is great! Maybe people would like the remake of Wonder Boy 3 The Dragon's Trap and Monster Boy too. I think both are also fantastic.
Pocket Penguin DX and 2021: Moon Escape look pretty cool. They are on the Gameboy as well as Switch.
I think the 16 bit era is the sweet spot. Games like tmnt shredders revenge and blazing chrome feel like old games and games like super mario world like new ones

Other games I would recommend for retro gamers are Souldiers, it's a metroidvania RPG that's a lot of fun to explore. But it's quite challenging especially the bosses. I wouldn't recommend the switch version, get it on PC instead since it runs way better.
Another game I recommend is Fight'n Rage, a beatemup like Streets of Rage.
Agree with all your picks but a second video is really needed. Some of my additional favourites: advance wars 1+2, the atari retrospective, castlevania and contra collections and link's awakening.
I guess you are looking at new games that are phyical. In that case I can recommend Trinity Trigger (just got released), Ittle Dew (1 or 2), Layman Legends and Monster Boy

Wrestling Empire is the No Mercy sequel we never got and a gift for those of us who enjoy that N64 era of wrestling titles. It's easily my favourite wrestling game ever and has the depth in career mode rarely ever seen in any sports/simulation game.
