      🖕🏾You clearly don’t know anything about me or my channel, please don’t come back, you’re presence is not needed. As a black man, the amount of “white” artists or “black” isn’t a point of contention. It’s all love here. *_Everyone_* perks up when that jolting transition from folk to gospel shows up. How can you not? The performers wanted it that way. When you listen to black singers back then and before, you hear a lot of this sound. You can immediately tell where a lot of these guys and gals learned to sing. The one who really struck me this way was the legendary Sam Cooke who was an incredible Gospel singer. Racism? A load of crap. Music doesn't care what race you are, it binds us all together.

    My dad gave me the Last Waltz album when I was 14, and told me 'this my son, is real music'. We also watched the concert together and he introduced me to all the artists who participated. Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr, Stephen Stills, and the greatest of all, Bob Dylan. I cant thank him enough, this is where my true apreciation for music began!

    No one ever mentions that Rick is playing a flawless electric fretless bass without even looking at the thing throughout the song while in a nodding out state. It’s astounding how talented the guy was. 95% of all bassist’s today couldn’t even play a fretless bass if they wanted to, let alone under the influence.

    That's Rick's verse! It's the Band's song and Rick always sings that verse. Yes he is very animated, but has that lovely tenor voice. Levon sings the rest of the song (the drummer). The Staple Singers were one of their favorite bands and invited them on to perform in this wonderful song! There was a Play for Change version to celebrate the 50 yr anniversary on this song. Robbie Roberson who wrote the song and was the guitarist for the Band is joined by Ringo Starr and other musicians from around the world to perform it. It's a good watch too!

    Saw the thumbnail and broke a land-speed record clicking it. You're going to love The Band! Upon watching it again it occurs to me that this clip represents the best tradition in American music. Black musicians and white musicians sharing their influences and creating something that is greater than the sum of its parts. By the last verse everyone is singing together. And, yeah, Rick Danko (the bassist) is a unique cat, but it always comes from the heart.

    Loved your reaction, Syd! I went to see "The Last Waltz" as soon as it hit the theaters, which being in LA at the time, was pronto (yeah, I'm old). Take some time to watch the whole thing. When the band did "The Basement Tapes" with Dillon, they, together, changed the future of pop music. They broke the mold of having to do things in a studio, with studio workers, with a gd clock on the wall. After that folks started recording in their garages...and basements..but they were the first.

    • @mookie7688
      @mookie7688 4 года назад

      Don't know about the first. Garage rock was a thing in the 60s, and a lot of the early surf rock was pretty lo-fi, but hugely influential for sure.

    This arrangement was purposeful. Imagine a town full of people. All sorts of different kinds of people, all shapes and sizes, ages and colors. People taking care of each other, taking the weight and sharing it. The song was written by the lead guitarist about real people they knew in Nazareth Pennsylvania, where Robby (lead guitarist) liked to spend time due to his love of Martin Guitars that are made there.
    This arrangement was to reflect the diversity of the people the band knew. Rick Danko, bass player and animated singer, sang the part with Crazy Chester for a reason. It gave character to Chester and added more diversity.
    This wasn't a jam session, this is an arrangement. Thanks for sharing your reaction.

    There is an entire documentary called "The Last Waltz." It chronicles "The Band" and their origins. Full of their musical performances from the different stages of their existence. They were such a unique Band. You cannot Pidgeon hole them into any one genre. They used live in a Big old 3 story Pink country style home. (Think the Walton's) in upstate New York. They had thousands of hours of Taped music from the make shift basement studio that they used to jam in almost all day, everyday. They had other performers come and stay there and jam with them, like Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman (Allman Bros,) and on and on. They named the house "Big Pink." Shortly afterwards, they cut an album called "Big Pink." Legendary movie producer "Martin Scorsese, produced the documentary ,"The Last Waltz." If Martin Scorsese wants to do something like that about you, well...he thinks your a big deal. He's one of the biggest Hollywood producers there is. Check it out if you get a chance. Some popcorn and a soft drink, and 2 hours of great music and storytelling.
    Thanks.

    The Last Waltz was The Bands final performance with special guests. One of the best Concert Documentaries by Scorsese who is friends with Robbie Robertson m, lead guitarist and writer. So many great performances. Check out Eric Claptons performance. He and Robbie are 🔥

    They were protest singers back in the day and pops Staples brought a bluesy reverb guitar to the songs. Bob Dylan asked Mavis to marry him once.

    As already said, watch the movie, The Last Waltz. The Band has to be considered up their with the Beatles, Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd as one of the greatest bands ever.

    I'm sure this is probably been mentioned before, but just to be sure. This came from the movie The Last Waltz. Which was a Martin Scorsese documentary of their final tour. Video editing of this documentary included airbrushing cocaine remnants from noses. Sad but true
