  • In 1898, imagine that the original film is 125 years old, the Riley Brothers from Bradford created a charming street scene of Leeds that showcases a busy Boar Lane, complete with electric trams, horse-drawn carriages and lots of pedestrians. There's even a policeman posing for the camera. Look out for the steam powered tram, I wasn't aware that they even existed.
According to the Warwick Trading Company catalogue from the same year, this street scene was considered one of the best available at the time. The Brothers also shot a street scene in their hometown of Bradford, which was described as "of local interest but not as impressive as the one from Leeds."
The original film had terrible noise, scratches and other damage, the worst of this is still evident in the upscaling. Until the AI advances further the only way to remove this currently is manually. I increased the fps from 18 to 30 to smooth out the film action. Overall a enough detail has been recovered to bring the scene to life in the 21st Century.
✔ AI settings testing, optimised for the best upscale.
    ✔ Flicker reduced.
✔ Scratches, blemishes and other damage removed.
    ✔ Image noise removed.
    ✔ Image details recovered.
    ✔ Digital/jpg artefacts removed.
    ✔ Film sharpened.
    ✔ Upscaled to HD.

Great film, all the buildings on the left have long gone unfortunately, the bank on the right is still standing, not sure what business it is nowadays.

It's the Black Prince pub, formerly the Yorkshire Banking Company building as you say.

very nice but why have the thumb in colour when its not, misleading...

I agree, but colour thumbs draw more clicks, unfortunately it's down to marketing. I'm not a fan but that's the way of this world. More B&W conversion to colour films coming soon.

the UK was so backward & dirty (STILL IS TO A DEGREE)
its hard to believe that this video was made only 70 years before i was born -
the squalor & poverty was still bad in the 70's though
go round parts of inner city even today & all the poverty is hidden
behind new window frames, painted doors & covered cracks etc etc, the people are still the same, same depressing social problems, overcrowding, everybody is skint, over worked & over scheduled, immigration etc
we've just hidden the visible poverty- shocking country!
its just disguising the problem which is still rampant today

Brilliant film - the music not so much. The eras don’t mix

Wasn't Leeds always ahead of the curve with musical trends. I've an idea jazz came from Yorkshire, all those brass bands! lol
The era's are pretty close and I thought the piano was very plinky plonk Victorian sounding. Maybe I should have chosen a less well known tune. :)

Yes they do. It's Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin, first performed in 1899.
