She volunteered at a VA hospital where I live and my friend was friends with her during that time. Had her phone number and everything. She was a very intense person who kept to herself while in the throes of depression; yet was also quite loving and interested in being fully present for people who were suffering.

Such a beautiful song! Near the end of the vid Sinead is really shedding tears because the song had her thinking of her mom, who passed away in 1985. I saw her on SNL back in 1992 where she tore up a pic of the Pope. She was no longer loved for this song but became hated instead. Nowadays people say she was ahead of her time on that one. Sinead was a huge talent, her entire "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" album is a big part of my memories. So many great songs on that album I listened to the entire CD with my girlfriend countless times. Her career was largely cut short for the hate she got for standing up against child abuse in the Catholic church and that's a sad statement about our culture.
After knowing this is Prince's song... you can really hear the "Prince" in it.... i saw him do this live somewhere,... and if Sinead's version gives you chills,.. wait till you hear the man himself do it... thanks guys great reaction, love the show!!
Just watched her documentary. can't say I agree with all her stances but I can say I respect her standing her ground. She also said when they made the video she didn't know she was going to cry. It just happened. she said she would always think of her mother when she sang it. Her mother was very abusive to her and Sinead ended up in foster care. But she still loved her mother. it seemed like a weird situation and really makes the whole of her story make more sense
The I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got album is still ranked in the top 500 Rolling Stones of all time. She was far more talented than her history reflects.
Written by Prince and released in 1985 via his band "The Family" on their album by the same name. Awesome album by the way. Sinead made the song famous to the general public. RIP to Sinead and Prince 💜🤙🏼

Over the years, she had a couple dozen singles that did well. She had two platinum and four gold albums, recording well into the 2000s, so she had a solid career. As for the song, it kind of reminds me of that Purple Rain dirge pace, slow and contemplative. To me, it really doesn't sound much like a Prince song, so I'm guessing that's why he gave it to The Family who released it on their debut album (a version no one's heard; give it a listen, interesting take). O'Conner covered it because she connected to the song's feeling of loss. I bought her first CD. It was pretty good, but I didn't pursue listening to her after that, not really to my taste.
I loved this song when it first came out, but the video also helped catapult it to fame. In fact, this is one of my all time favorite music videos due to the creative artistry evident. The juxtaposition of her white face against pure black is simplistic and genius. The expressiveness of her eyes which serve to amplify her voice contributes hugely to its impact. The few bleak views of stark trees, and decaying statuary convey images of haunting loneliness. It was just a superb production and holds up beautifully over time.
It was very rare that Prince let other artists remake his songs. He would write for artists but not let them do a song that he had already recorded unless he truly respected their gift. She was real special. ❤

I’ve followed Prince’s music and career since the early 80s, and I have never quite bought onto the housekeeper story. Prince tended to be very honest in his lyric writing, most often writing about a romantic love interest, girlfriend or wife. And often writing from his personal experiences. IMHO I think he most likely wrote this song about his break up with Denise Matthews (a.k.a. Vanity) who was his girlfriend for four years until they parted shortly before shooting began on Purple Rain. (Vanity was originally supposed to have played Prince’s love interest in that film until she left over a money dispute,) Their separation would’ have occurred within months, if not weeks or even days of him writing “Nothing Compares 2 U.”. The lyrics taken in their entirety make so much more sense if written about Vanity as opposed to some housekeeper.

She did have other hits - mostly in Europe. "I Want Your Hands on Me" and "Mandinka" from the album The Lion and The Cobra. It's a great song but it NEEDS a vocal like this one - she bled on that record. Not one moment of that song is trite or false and it's because she's so in the moment, feeling everything she's singing. You can see it in her face. Powerful stuff. I believe she also stood up for some black artists (rappers) at the time.. and MC Lyte (a trail blazing female rap artist) guested on "I Want Your Hands on Me" - a single I still have in my collection.
