- This video demonstrates the firing order for the 2009+ Yamaha YZF- R1 (and the YZR-M1)
Idle video here • Inline 4 with crosspla...
shifting video here • Gear shifting Yamaha R...
This is the only 4 cylinder engine I know of which uses a crossplane crankshaft, in basic terms it works like one bank of a V8 engine. (edit: I think Suzuki's motoGP bike has a crossplane crank too)
The firing order shown here is 1 3 2 4.
Up in the video is forward on the motorcycle.
For the purposes of comparison to the Yamaha 2008 and earlier R1 the firing interval of the engine shown here is:
1 - 270 degrees - 3 - 180 degrees - 4 - 90 degrees - 2 - 180 degrees -
where degrees are crank degrees, and a complete engine cycle is 720 degrees.
Unfortunately my tacho and program doesn't go higher than 10,000 RPM. Авто/Мото
Wow. It's amazing how close this sounds to the real engine across the entire rpm range. Inline 4 cars need to use this firing order. It sounds amazing.
Larz This prototype of engine is un balanced unlike the normal inline 4.
Larz yeah this would make inline 4 engines sounds powerful
Prototype engine? You mean a crossplane 4? Yamaha has been building and selling a bulletproof one for years now for its R1.
The reason yamaha using this because racing, so a normal grocery getter don't need it.
@@650hpreventon I don't want a normal grocery getter though. I want a grocery getter that goes fast and sounds like this.
If all I4s had crossplane cranks, everybody would love them so much more.
Nick Darlington unfortunately it won’t happen, Yamaha gained nothing and i mean nothing by going to a cross plane crank and even then it’s till not a true cross plane per say, they did it in moto gp for traction reasons and it sounds cool lol. It’s a big marketing scheme the same way Ford went on and on about the flat plane crank in the gt350 even though it did very little for the engine itself
@@GoGoggansGo Nothing? Many people bought R1s over others just because it's a crossplane.
@Steven Goggans what do you mean it isn't a true cross plane crank? The voodoo crank is a bit weird but I don't know know if a conventional flat crank would make more power, surely someone has done a back to back of flat vs cross plane crank with all else being equal.
@@GoGoggansGoincorrect
Flatplane sounds much better
0:15 hear in 0.25x speed (nice beat)
Loll😂😂
Yup 😂
😂😂🔥🔥
🤣👌🏻
Put put put put your hands up. And jump jump jump jump!!! 😂
I need like just a 10-hour loop video of that purring idle.
You got it!
real close to what a i4 crossplane was, im a big fan of uneven firing interval engine, distinctive sounds, good job!
1:07 when you're chilling at a stoplight
That LEGIT sounds like my 2010 R1 with TBR race cans on it. All the way through the rev range. Spot on. Thanks for taking the time to do it
This is one of the more proper sounding ones, thanks for taking the time to watch it!
Yo like even the idle is on point
This legitimately made me smile when it reached about 3k revs. Like the kind of smile that really stretches your face muscles and makes your hair stand on end, like someone's scratching an itch you didn't know you had.
everybody gangsta till the I4 starts makin V8 noises
This even sounds like an R1 too! Well done.
Because R1 is based on crossplane i4
@@Hunter.1999 I’m pretty sure he was commenting how realistic it sounded it literally says r1 in the title captain obvious
Amazing how close it sounds like the real thing

Unmistakable unmatchable sound of the 1-3-2-4 sequence is music to my ears every morning I crank on it.
If you want to impress people knowing the type of engine just by sound alone this is where you learn
Would’ve thought this was an R1 if I closed my eyes
crazy how it really hits that V8 note. I know it's basically half a V8 anyways, but still cool
Ultimate man! Although it's a digital representation but still incredible explanation. Absolutely perfect and accurate ❤️
Love your idea and the way you present it - can‘t wait to see the new Ducati V4
Great video! I love this particular engine the CP4. I love it's sound. Now I know a little bit more about it, and the reason of that particular beautiful sound. Thanks.
I love the 4k-6k rpm range of sound
Does sound like v8, they should use this firing order in all 4 cylinders and theyd make more sales...
tommy d u b b s cross plane I4s are unbalanced so manufacturers don't use them.
lego technic but imagine the sales if they found a way
tommy d u b b s ppl wont buy a car just because it sounds very nice.
Ppl already dont buy cars cuz they dont like the sound of a 4cyl... mustang turbo
Sportscars dont use small I4s and normal cars don't need good sound so a good sounding I4 isn't needed.
Perfect!! It explains this sound.
You need more subscribers dude... i really appreciate this kind of work
How could anyone dislike this? Great work!!!
because it sounds different on video speakers to irl, they like flatplane because they never hear crossplane irl
Now I want a cross-plane crank on a K24 Honda engine.
It'd be one hell of a sleeper.
Dangg this one sounds amazing through and through
thats why i subscribed you because this is the best example for engine firing order sound ever, 2 days ago i was wishing for this to come and it happened, keep coming for the ducati or inline 3 and more, thank you so much what an educatonal channel
The crossplane R1 had me scratching my head for a while, from the yamaha promo video it looked like the two centre big end journals were on the same axis at first, much simpler to visualise when I worked out it is just a fairly normal crossplane crank.
Ducati V-twin needs to be done, inline 3 will happen at some stage but I need to work out a better way to do the sound for inlines, if there is anything specific you want to see let me know. Thanks for the sub!
thank you so much, I'm so addicted to engine sounds and always finding an answer for the reason why engine sounds different, and it's like my dream that I found this video
mark messmer
I like the R1 too it amaze me with its at low rev like a muscle car
and i figure out that it is just a pause between the first and the 2nd firing
i try it with beat maker app with 6 beats (the 2 aditional beats represent the two gap from the 1st and 2nd firing) just with single cylinder and simply take the 1st and 2nd firing has a 720° gap and also 720° gap to the 3rd, the 3rd and 4th are normal every 720° firing
so it looks like this
1 - gap - 2 - gap - 3 - 4
William Moser mark messmer
here is my video of uneven firing Single Cylinder
ruclips.net/video/OIBKYGFReM4/видео.html
@@bagusadikin7416 the gap btw the firing of cylinders 1 and 3 is three times that of 3 and 2 and also, twice that of 2 and 4.
Mind bending but easy to figure out
amazing demonstration ❤
Sounds like a Corvette that shrank in the wash! I love it!!
sooo freggen cool! You can actually hear the crossplane R1 :D
Sir, your videos are very informative as well as entertaining. Plus, the resemblance of sound that your setup generates to the actual engine is just next to perfect.
I have a request. Can you please make a video on your setup showing how it is, how you built it, the parts, the rpm controllers and stuff please. I really am very curious to know. Thanks alot.
Cheers! The setup is a bit tricky to explain, it's just Arduino, a transistor array, lights and speakers. The tacho is a normal one driven by a pulse from the Arduino.
17k rpm ?
I love this video so much you cant even fathom
cheers!
Awesome! Truly sounds like an R1. Any chance of a video for the Aprilia’s 65 degree V4
This was a very interesting demonstration. Thank you.
Cheers!
That's ace, i have the CP4 engine in my yamaha mt-10 and it's spot on on, even that resonance at 7000 rpm which is very addictive, and goes like stink, i've ridden everything (almost) and this is the best engine ever put in a motorcycle for the road! and explains why it feels like a twin and lumpy, great though
And 5 years later, CP4 is still the best roadbike engine out there! And the best sounding inline 4, period. 😊
It really does sound like a baby v8. Love the demonstration
Cheers!
i can sleep to this beautiful sound
Best video on you tube clear explanation
I have a 2019 MT10. This made me start giggling like a child it sounds so real. I love my crossplane.
Haha awesome
I watch many motorcycle vlogger saying the same things "Crossplane 4 Yamaha sounds like Ducati V engine". Now i get it!
This firing order is music that I love to listen to.........
The cross plane is definitely the best sound a 4 pistons engine can make.
Perfect work congrads...
I love that yamaha sound.
Brilliant. Yep (agree with below) that is how my Yamaha cross-plane (uneven firing Order) howl sounds.
This sounds like the real R1 is how good you did it dayum.
cheers, it's one of the better illustrations of the real thing
Valwntino Rossi loved his Yamaha with a crossplane crankshaft
My dog was particularly interested in this the first time because i listened to so many he fell asleep 😂
The crazy thing is how close it sounds to the real thing
... it's even crazier that the real thing still has 5, 000-8,000 RPM left to run
thanks for this!
I was waiting for VTEC to kick in
actually, there is another crossplane 4 cylinder engine. the pontiac 195 cu in i4. it was half a 389 v8. it shook REAL BAD though.
Just wow! Upvoted. Please also make a V4 if possible.
An I4 crossplane has the same "sound signature" as a 90 deg. V4 (180 deg. crank) like e.g. the VFR 750F.
wow it's great work
These videos are so awesome 👏
Thanks, glad you like them!
Uhh.. mind blown. I bought the R1 because of the sound it makes. Now I know its secret to enchantment.
Very interesting, I would like to see a video with an l4 with crossplane crankshaft but different. R1 has ignition times of 180-90-180-270, I propose a video with an l4 crossplane with 90-90-90-450. This is almost a real big bang and relatively easy to implement. (english from Brazil).
Man i love R1's
Didn't know that there are crossplane 4 cyls existing. Holy smokes... sounds like a V8 for real.
Search 2009+ Yamaha R1 with literally any exhaust, they all sound amazing.
Sicuramente guidare questo motore è un vero piacere sinfonico pari o uguale al suono che emette la ducati desmodromica! 😍
that idle tho 👌
At lower rpm it sounds like a John Bohnam drum solo pattern. That's a great thing.
I saw few comments here at this video: there are people who want to make sound their 4 cyl cars like this. Actually there is a theoretical and possible solution for that: unequal length headers. First, please correct me if I am wrong at something. Let's start with the subaru rumble sound: any 4 cyl flatplane and boxer engines are firing in 180-180-180 degree intervals, on the subaru 4 cyl boxers the runner-pairs lengths difference causes that the engine sounds like it is firing like 180-120-180-240 degree intervals. For this there exists a solution for few Honda inline 4 engines: 1320 UEL header. For crossplane inline 4 sound: it fires in 180-90-180-270 degree intervals, so now, if this length difference on subaru boxer 4 header simulates 60 degree delay at firing, then the double of this length difference will simulate +50 percent = 90 degree delay in firing, and this "double-subaru-header-runner-length difference" simulates on an engine which fires 180-180-180-180 exactly a 180-90-180-270 firing order = crossplane inline 4 sound. So, the theoretical solution using the 1320 UEL header: cut out the loop - which is the runner for the cyls nr. 3 and 4 -, then make a double loop with the same radius like the original loop, and of course using a pipe which have the same thickness like the pipe which was used for the original loop. If I am right, the reason why nobody made a header like this to date because it not worth it: except the sound it is wrong in every other aspects: it can be expensive, it can be hardly buildable even for a car which have big amount of space under the hood, can damage the engine (or at least shortens the engine's lifetime) because of the big exhaust backpressures at cylinders on the short runners, makes a non-negligible power and efficiency loss, etc...
Messing with primary lengths might get you close at some RPMs, but they are more a time delay than an angle shift, I would put up with the Subaru rumble if I owned one but I wouldn't bother trying to replicate it on an I4.
@@WilliamMoser , OK
Wow! Awesome video William. I wonder if you could make the sound more like real engine sound?
Sounds great!
These are awesome thanks for doing these. Any chance you could do one of the Honda Big Bang v4?
Great job
Thanks for this
Thank you.
Fantastic!
Hey there, I have a few questions, do youuse a pitch shift or is this done ONLY by increasing the frequency of the sounds? I am trying to recreate what you have done in Unity3D.
Also: very well done it is the best r1 simulated sound i have ever heard!
No pitch shift used, just sending a pulse to the speaker each time one of the lights goes on.
Thanks for the response mate!
이해가 잘 되네요 감사합니다
Sounds like an r1!
yes, because R1 IS using the crossplane crankshaft
I was looking for this comment, 2009+ R1 got the crossplane, and the YZR M1 (motogp model) also got the crossplane since before but I don't know which year exactly it started
Didn’t expect a 4 cylinder engine to sound like a v8
So you don't have to pay that much money for a *V8* car, but just buy an *MT10* or an *R1* XD
Never seen anything like this before😍😍Cool👌👌
Thanks!
Please do one of Aprilia's RSV4
I love this 😍
Awesome!!!
Epic win
Los ángulos el arbol de levas serían los mismos, solo cambiarían el orden de encendido?
I'm now really curious to hear the difference between the crossplane i4 and the honda vfr v4 (my real world experience may have been tainted by gear-driven cams....)
Amazing
I’m obsessed with these lol
I have had my mt10 for 12 months, love the bike but with the exup removed it does get a bit of a chug at very low rpm.Question how will I know if it has a misfire (just joking)
I can feel it comin in the air tonight.... Crossplane
I love it crossplane
This sounds and reminds me of my 2005 Fz1
Thats so cool, you should do the MT-09 engine, crossplain 3 cylinder
Already done ruclips.net/video/hzqjya_ZtJE/видео.html
@@WilliamMoser Oh Cool, i couldn't find it in your videos, i didn't look hard enough, these are so cool, it amazes me how they sound just like the real engines.
@@Mr_Frazza it took me long enough to find it! Yeah I'm still surprised at how close some of them are.
It really sounds like a yamaha crossplane engine!
1k idle was nice
Really interesting. Any chance of doing a vid of Yamaha's CP3 triple motor?
Yes I've done that one, I've done all motorcycle inline 3s that I know of.
this is amazing!! :D glad i found you! subbed!! if you'd be so kind to show how you did this step by step setup??
Thanks! Glad you found me too, thanks for the sub.
Sorry I'm not that kind :) it's an arduino driving the tacho and lights and a speaker via transistors. The code is pretty simple as far as arduino goes.
can i have the Sketch for the arduino?
What if this firing order is the same when a horse is galloping and every hoof that claps on the ground counts as a firing (power) stroke. know whAt I'm saying, Willis!
R1 🔥
great work. is it possible to make videos for twin engine? 360 degrees, 180 degrees and 270 degrees? Thanks
Thanks! Inline twin variants are next on the list, just need to make them.
The interval between one and three just seems wrong. It might make sense in the context of eight cylinders in a V configuration but in an in-line four it feels like the unevenness might lead to problems. Apparently, some people believe the higher performance versions of this engine are prone to creating a form of resonance that might lead to catastrophic weaknesses in the crank. Regardless, when you hear e.g. the MT10 with a decent can on it the sound is excellent. I kind of want one just for the noise alone.
It took a fair amount of work to get the cranks to not break IIRC, I think Suzuki's crossplane I4s have more problems than Yamaha's.
I want one for the noise too, I don't even have a bike license.
I dont quite understand this, my full power bandit 600 is i4 flatplane i believe, however at idle it sounds just like this crossplane, can anyone clear this up?
Can you make v4 scremer and v4 bingbang engine firing order??
Easily explained 👍
