What is the best log for low light films and what is the best log for a film with balanced light? Canon R5. Thank you very much and don't worry about producing less, good recovery.... hugs from Brazil....
I'm still getting used to CL2, but from what I can see it works very well in most any situation, though I understand that CL3 can work better in protecting the highlights. So far, CL2 with better colour accuracy has it as my new favourite.
I found it informative to see the way waveforms work. I wonder if they would ever be implemented for still photographers? I do see them being more useful than histograms for some circumstances.
As a videographer, I of course love waveform monitors. BUT, when it comes to waveform monitors, audio meters, or whatever other instrument, I NEED to see the measurements! All too often, modern cameras will throw in these things at a basic level with a few lines and call it a day. I need to see either IRE units, percentages, or dB to know what I'm dealing with!
Got you there. While I can see the lines foe the IRE level, the waveform is small enough that it makes it difficult to read. Being able to resize, change opacity and change placement would be a big help.
Histograms aren't useless for still shooters. It is a very useful tool that even until this day many people don't understand. Some say expose for your highlights and you can check this using the histogram. Also if you want you can use multiple exposures and blend back in post for a HDR image. I know this is not applicable for video but the histogram is very helpful in this regard.
Thank you Simon. It's very useful. I can understand why waveforms are used for video, but the others? Why don't we have zebras, false color, clipping etc. when (pre)shooting stills? There could also be a way to switch the place of e.g. the histogram back and forth to elsewhere on the screen. And while we are at it: why can't the Q-menu be optionally available in the EVF? Sometimes the icons on the detailed screen are too difficult to read on a busy background. Older people and those with an eye dystrophy could also use an optional oversize mode of all icons. Especially the Dial Function Setting could benefit from bigger icons. Like the histogram it would be optional. I understand this topic is not sexy, but with time everyone gets older...
These tools are very helpful at getting the right look. Camera like the R5 II are considered pro cameras expecting us to be able to know what to do. It takes time to get it right, but once we do, the results are very good. I'm still learning ;)
Excellent helpful video. Please produce a video showing the video workflow to edit footage in conjunction with a more detailed explanation on waveforms and setting exposure levels. I am not sure on the steps to edit footage correctly, adjusting exposure during editing and colour correcting.
Its great that we get all the tools we need built into our cameras as a stills guy I love the histogram and the live EVF it makes so much difference eg if the I want the shadows to go completely II just under expose until I see what I want. so I can see how you would like to use the wave forms . I saw a tulip in my garden , Mid day Sun beaming down the tulip looked like it was sucking up the rays look great but you dont see the car in the car port behind it as your eyes only see what you want to. now I took my RF100-500 @500 to 1.4mtrs away and then lowered the exposure until the car port and white car was no more. it made a lovely photo just what I could see. but without the tool to see if I was going to far. I am happy with the R5 for sure and part of me wanted the R1 to be this grand camera above everything but at 45mp so I could justify changing the R5 to the R1 so once in my life I would have the top spec camera. I think its one of them things as you get older close to 60 and knowing that you may not have the time with funds to get the stuff you dreamed of as you was paying a mortgage raising a family. I can not complain as my new motorbike well 3 years old Kawasaki H2sx se gives me the biggest smile . then take out my R5 and I feel like a king , happy days then My daughter has just given me a grandson and wow the world has just changed 😁 so which lens do I take LOL 28-70 f2 me think
Ah yes, the decisions on which lens to bring. I made the crazy decision to take the 100-500 to the fire department open house. I was the only one shooting with it, but the results proved it wasn't a silly idea. I love trying something different.
Oof, that title! LOL! I thought you were going to talk about stills. The histogram in stills photography, especially in mirrorless, has helped me tremendously. Sorry about your back issues. I have some myself. It makes car travel a bit difficult. I'll do it, then I pay for it in discomfort for days. I'm super happy with my R5 II. I went out shooting the past three days. The AF finds the small warbler birds in leafy trees much better than my R5 ever did. I'm looking forward to using my camera more and more. Have a great Sunday, Simon! Feel better.
I made the title seem more stills like as the question is often posed by photographers - why do we need waveforms. ;) I did have some trouble with the 100-500. It just didn't seem to want to focus at times - nothing. I'm sensing a firmware update for the lens. It was mostly on things up close.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Simon naughty boy, you just wanted to shock us OrdinaryStillsMakers ? 🙈😛 But you're right, it does help the OccasionallyFilmmaker in us, making sense of the video options !
I feel for you with your back problem 😔. I suffered a spinal injury in my neck which affects all my extremities to varying degrees over a decade ago and every day is just managing pain. I hope your pain can subside to a reasonable level because when it comes to the spine I know full recovery is a rarity. 🇨🇦
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker that’s great if you can avoid the meds but keep in mind if the pain is significantly taking away from your quality of life then that’s the point you should consider some meds…BUT this also heavily depends on each persons 🤔 not exactly sure how to say this but…I don’t necessarily want to say addiction but if someone is susceptible to that type of thing then avoidance is better than the inevitable dependency on these meds. @ordinaryfilmmaker, great topic!!! The waveform is awesome, I love it. I wish we had the flexibility to resize. It as well as to move it. Please @canonusa, give us a firmware update… The R5 Mark ii is AWESOME! So is this Channel!!!
LOL, I haven't used the histogram since I started photography. I learned by the old fashioned way. Started in film photography and learned, (without a light meter), what the right exposure and everything was. I had many failures, and wasted a lot of film, but those failures taught me ultimately how to do everything right. I am honestly not sure why people use the histogram on modern mirrorless cameras because they have a full sim of the output in the viewfinder. You can determine if a subject is "properly exposed" by simply LOOKING at what is in the viewfinder now. And if you get it wrong the first time, oh well! You didn't waste film stock.
Because the monitor displays jpeg. And that jpeg may be displaying a LUT, a film simulation, etc. And in those two cases alone may not show correct exposure by just eyeballing it. The exposure can still be incorrect despite the jpg image being display on the monitor. The operator may be shooting a video and simply switched to stills mode to take a still image. The video and stills settings are totally different, however with a realtime LUT, film simulation look being applied to both images on that rear display.
Use whatever tool is appropriate for your own individual task or requirement. No cookie cutter methodology will apply to every single person or application. Its a tool. Use it when applicable.
@@DrRussell , I think that the way a sensor’s response is recorded is an interesting problem. The digital format and the mode of recording in both stills and video modes alters the number of bits collected and how those bits were amplified and combined in the output stills and video format. In the R5 we see 12 bit stills when using the electronic shutter, which then jumps up to 14 bits in the R5 MkII. We see different base sensitivity differences and sensor readout speed differences too. Videography requires the videographer to
To maintain proper exposure and detail on the subject as it moves in time and space. Photographers are trying to nail that exposure at a specific instant at a fixed time. In both cases it is the person who knows their tools best that will generate the best stills and videos. Very few setups are perfect. A good professional can optimize their setup to achieve optimal results given the lighting that is illuminating the subject. Discussing the techniques that one uses in different situations is a great way to teach your subscribers. Explaining what the video grading process is doing and what the different post processing techniques are doing to the digital data will be helpful to both stills photographers and videographers. Simon,
Thanks for telling us about how you work around the increased shadow noise in the R5 Mkii sensor. Faster readout speed has its cost.
Suggestion for a future video - Waveform vs False colour?
