My R5mark2 arrived the day before coming to disney, adding my wife and son to the priority list has made it so easy to capture great picture between crowds and people passing by !!
Just got my R5II a couple days ago. I modified settings to match my R5 and WOW!!. The AF is soooo quick that I don't even think about the process anymore. Shooting Rowing competition for several days. It picked up on people and boats at a distance that I would not believe before. It also stuck on those items. I use back button focus and use eye detect on AFon and spot on the * button. All that I hoped for. I also tried the focus by my eye and think it allows me to pick any of the rowers in a Men 4. My back button then takes over and finds the eyes. Lots more to try but so far it is wonderful. I was using either RF24-105L lens and my trusted RF100-500 lens. Both worked great. Did not try video yet. So much to explore! I did use the earlier battery from canon and it immediately warns that some options are not available. It did continue to work for those items that I normally use so not a big deal at the moment but wish they would stop doing that.
What we need Canon to produce is a fast charger for the new battery. They are supplying the same charger that goes back to at least the 5Dm4! I haven’t timed it but it takes “forever” with both the charger and in camera via USB-C. Companies like Ego (lithium ion battery based lawn care equipment) have shown that you can produce a smart fast charger that won’t burn your house down…
This video, much like the Canon R52, is an upgrade. I hope this is taken as constructive criticism but sometimes your videos are redundant and could be trimmed down more. This one seemed well thought out going through important points and I found it very useful. Thank you.
I have the R5 ii and also the R3. I gotta tell you, my R3’s autofocus seems better than the R5 ii so I get perplexed when I hear how much better the R5 ii is. It’s a nice camera but I also own the Nikon Z9 and Z8 and they still outperform Canon for wildlife. I love both brands obviously but Nikon’s autofocus is just as good as Canon. I do like how Canon catches the subject faster, that’s the only difference that I see between the two. I don’t agree that the R5 ii is groundbreaking. Shooting photo only in 75 degree weather after a half an hour I had 5 bars on the temperature icon and my camera was pretty hot to the touch. My Nikon’s can shoot all day and never even get warm so I wonder why Canon has such a problem with heat management.
There seems to be some disagreement on this. Shooting cars at NASCAR, my friend found the R5 II so much better at staying focused not he car, not being distracted by a sense or polls. He found it snappy, very fast.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker that may be the case but I don’t find the same snappiness photographing birds. I’m going to try to tweak some more settings but these were just my first impressions so far. Do you know if there is any fix to getting rid of the prompt MODE video to stills message that shows up when you hit playback? I’ve been all through the menu several times and can’t find a way to stop that from showing up.
The r5ii is much better.. I locked on to a bird that went behind some branches.. in any other body the branches would’ve obscured the bird but its like the camera knew my subject and kept focus BEHIND the branches to stay on the bird. Looking at the pics in LR, u see the branches in front of the bird but of the parts you can see of the bird.. they are in focus. The r5ii AF is legendary.. the r3 would always revert to the branches.
@@ItsBerg I noticed the same occurrence when I was photographing small birds today as well. My R3 would often focus on the branches or leaves, but the R5 Mk2 focuses on the bird and ignores the branches and leaves. IMO the AF is a huge step forward.
I am so happy with my decision to buy the R5 II. I've taken many photos of hummingbirds in flight. The AF was great. I was using the 100-500 mm. Great combo. I did go out with my 200-800 mm one day but only found one small warbler to shoot, in the shade. The photo still looks good. This combo to be determined. When I was shooting at a hummingbird garden in the outdoor heat, I did notice that the heat indicator was rising. Interesting. It hasn't even been a week with this camera and no regrets. Fall migration has begun. I'll get a better idea of how everything works, especially wanting to try pre-capture. Thanks for your thoughts, Simon!
I'm glad I ordered the cooling grip. It's in the store, but they are waiting on the batteries. I don't plan to use the grip a lot, but when going out on hot days or for long shoots, I will use it. Or when I need batteries. I can't wait for FCPX to release support for the camera. I am currently having to load in full clips. That's annoying.
@OrdinaryFilmmaker I bought the standard grip, BG-R20. I think I'll be okay because if it's hot enough out to stop the camera, I'm most likely not going out. LOL. Jan Wegener just put out his setup video for bird photography. Watching that now.
It’s there in all cameras when you don’t engage electronic stabilization. I recently got the lumix s5iix and at 20mm or wider it has the wobbles. Once I engage electronic stabilization it goes away. LUMIX recently introduced a high electronic stabilization setting to make it even more stable. Again it amazes me how popular it is to hate on canon. All cameras have pros and cons but only canon has every single thing analyzed . LUMIX for instance has a 5second delay on initial start up were you will swear your camera is broken as nothing I mean nothing happens, no lights no signs of life for five seconds. Then after that initial startup it’s fine, until you leave it setting for a few hours with out use, and b it happens again. Also when you press the record button there is a one second delay before it starts recording. What was amazing to me I had never heard of these issues until I bought the camera and encountered them. I went to the forums because the big content creators never mentioned these issues but they were on the forums and are considered normal. Now if this had been canon they would have shouted it from the roof tops but if it’s other brands they never say a word. So as I say it is popular to hate on canon and if you think if you buy say a Sony or other brand that they don’t have issues your kidding yourselfs. I do want to end with I like the lumix it is a good camera but it has issues like Sony and canon and Nikon etc.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker I understand that. I just wanted to point out other brands have the same issue when no electronic stabilization is used. Looking forward to more content on the R5Mkii . What I have seen so far video wise, looks real good.
I'm sure there is a way to do a better job at this. When shooting wide, stabilization doesn't have to work as hard. There should be some sort of conditional logic that says if shooting video at 24mm, reduce IBIS to a level to avoid wobble... ;)
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker that would be nice if they can implement something like that. All cameras would benefit from that. I guess that is why cinema cameras don’t have ibis, because even the best ibis still needs electronic stabilization to stop the wobbles. The cost is cropping in on the image hence, taking away that full frame field of view.
Great information on thus wonderful camera. I shoot birds, and the AF is quick and sharp, The other feature of note is pre-capture. I found birds perching on tombstones in a local cemetery in Cairns. I focused on target bird, then held shutter half way down to engage pre-capture. I just kept holding, (maybe 5-20 sec.) and when the bird launched, I pushed the shutter to start taking images. I got eye sharp images throughout the series of the launching bird. I would have missed this with the R5-1.
I haven't used recapture yet. Bird shots make up a small portion of what I do, but I can see how amazing that feature is. We got a lot of what we asked for in this update. A solid revision.
I used the R5ii at the zoo today with my RF70-200 and was blown away by its ability to focus on birds mid flight. I'm getting shots i would have never gotten before on the R5.
The videos that I have watched never talked about the Whirly sound unless You had the Fan Grip 20 model. NO FAN IN THE CAMERA BUT ONLY IN THE GRIP is what I heard. I have another idea about why you hear this sound. Pick up a seashell from the beach and place it toward your ear and listen. A Whirly Sound, Echo, Radio (Depending what Frequency Your Mind is Tuned to), etc. So with the Vents in the camera any drive noise or anything that is operating in the R5II gives You that sound (like the Doctor placing his stethoscope to listen for any abnormalities during an exam) enhanced. I am going out today with all of my Canon Full Frame Glass and R5II and do a complete how to do a RUclips video from start to finish. Hope Your finger gets better. My Doctor and Stepmother told me to lay off clicking the buttons on a mouse for a computer because of a sore upper arm. Cheers!
Hi Simon, my biggest AF issue on the R5 is getting initial focus on a distant bird of prey in flight. When that case is similar to your your initial focus case with the 200-800 then that's indeed a huge improvement !
It's much faster. I was shooting swans today and they were in flight, I got way more hits than I did not eh R5. The only issues is I wasn't framing right.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker with increased confidence in the AF, it will be easier to train yourself to get the training right. Or zoom out a little, and frame in post ;-)
Now we know: the real improvement of the R5m2 is the sensor. Watch this mornings video from Samuel Saul - one of the best review so far. This sensor is extraordinary, especially for video in log 2. Number 2 is autofocus it seems, based on other reviewers. Then all other items. This camera turns out to be really extraordinary.
It is much improved over the R5. The AF is not perfect, I sometimes lost the focus from a coot when it turned around in the Videomode, but it is much better than the AF from the R5C. And as I just tried 8K-RAW 60fps, my R5MKII overheated after 16 minutes of randomly shooting beside taking a lot of photos and switching between video and foto with prerecording. (The recorded videos are together 16min, but I was shootinf totaly for about 40 miutes) The good thing was that the Fotomode was still usable even when the Video overheated. CLOG-2 is great, I see a clear benefit in dynamic range over the R5C (in video).the white part on the head of a coot has often no details in the white part of the head, but with CLOG-2 there was absolutely no issue with not having details in that part, so the DR is better than from the R5C, as there I hat such issues when shooting the same bird.
The key from my friend, is use the cooling grip when shooting for å long time. It allows shooting for much longer and cool down is quicker. It also helps keep it cool when just shooting stills. Guess I will shoot more C Log today!
If you want animals to shoot, I find it best go out early right at the crack of dawn to get them more active. I did this a couple of weeks ago and got terns and an osprey hunting fish at Rouge Urban, a fly by of a great blue heron, and an egret. And all in 1 morning.
Yeah, I'm not doing the ;) I'll get up early for you lot to do a video, but walking for miles half asleep... not going to happen, but you are right, early is much better.
@OrdinaryFilmmaker Well, I'm so used to waking up at and actively working at 4am daily, that I still do so on my days off. Rouge and the Scarborough Bluffs aren't too far from me, so I'll sometimes just grab my gear and do a couple hour shoot. But if the chance comes up, I'd like to walk the Don Valley. A Facebook group I'm on is dedicated to just that, and the photos I see being posted are just spectacular with Larry the GBH, osprey and redtails, turtles by the Brickworks, and the occasional deer.
If I didn't have so much to do, I would. But funny you day that. It was about noon. I was under a bridge with my son. Then I noticed a head appear. It was a dear. He slowly started moving. We both saw him no more than 20 feet away. He walked calmly seeing us but acting cool until he last 15 feet when he ran away. All I had was myiphone...
@@darylcheshire1618 I did this to practice birds in flight shooting. They're easy to find, easy to shoot, and they're almost as omnipresent as pigeons but will at least fly more.
Can confirm the R6 II has the whirring sound too. But you have to have really good hearing and have your ear pressed to the back of the camera in a quiet room to hear it. I'd never know it existed if I hadn't read about it first then I had to listen for it. Question: The R6 II got an amazing feature from the Cinema line of cameras called Subject Detect Only AF... so the camera will focus on you, but if you move out of the frame it won't then focus on the background. Did the R5 II get this? It seems a lot of what the R5 II got the R6 II got as well including the focal length readout on the LCD and improved AF.
Yes the low frequency whirring type pain is there in my R5 mark II. Can hear it up to one feet with LCD screen pulled out, even with my age related significant hearing loss.
I did my first shoot yesterday with my R5 II and so far, so good! I love the ES for birding. Love that I can adjust the sound up or down. I turned it down so I can just hear it but my subjects can't. I love the HD/240! I love the separate photo/video modes. I will probably switch to mechanical shutter when shooting wildlife, for better dynamic range. I didn't notice any noise when shooting video, but I wasn't looking for it. I'll pay attention next time. I also tried out the eye-control AF. Results are mixed. I'll keep trying it. None of the reviews I've seen to date mention focus breathing compensation. The R5 II does have it, in video mode under "distortion correction". I'll check that out in a future video. I look forward to many, many future shoots with this thing! EDIT: I just checked for the whirring (not whirling) sound and I can hear it, but I have to hold the camera right up on my ear. From a few inches away, I can't hear it. It's present in photo mode, too. I just wonder if whatever moving part that causes that sound will drain the battery. That's a bigger issue for me, since I always use a remote mic rather than the inboard one.
Simon ...I discovered the same improved performance yesterday ...while using the R5 Mk2 and RF 200-800 ...as you did. I even told a friend of mine that I was shooting photos with that I felt that not only was the AF faster ...but remarkably ...the sharpness appeared to be an improved over using the same lens withy other Canon mirrorless cameras ,,,the R62 and R7. It was nice getting my own observation confirmed by you! I'm already really loving this camera!
My Canon R6 Mark II makes the same sound as what you demonstrated in your video. Flipped the screen out and could hear it in the same place. Maybe it is the IBIS
I'm afraid the red line around the screen is too small for me to see it. Hopefully the REC on the display will help. Is there a way to swap between dropping one person/bird/car for another, or keep following the "one", based on buttons? I don't have mine yet, where I preordered it, but I can get it from the shelf at another place 🤔
I did some sports this weekend with it... It's absolutely CRAZY FAST as I go from one subject to the other - I barely missed a thing. But the heat did go up to mid level at 30 fps at 10000/s under the 28° sunshine... but once I when down to 8000/s and 15 fps, it was better - no battery grip yet... hopefully that will help. I was using the 100-300 2.8 and it was so smooth and accurate!! WOW!!!
Consider the cooling grip, it's not just for photography. It will keep things cool for you. I want to get the 100-300 one dy, but it will have to be a used one ;)
Have recieved mine yesterday, not so mouch time to play, but first impressen: AF is crazy good. The noise is a bit irritating in my quiet office, but i think in the field this ist no problem. What i find out about the noise: i dont think this is a fan, maybe a gyroskope for stabilisation. When you make a long exposure, then you find out, that the noise is significant louder during the exposure time, somewhere the double noise. I beleave it has to do with IBIS.
All this has me wondering what we will see in the firmware update Daniel. The denoising in camera, I wonder if that is a result of concerns like yours... knowing it might be an issue.
Simon, please make a video about Apple IOS's lack of support for Raw images in the Mark II. I have a bunch of images I tried to process last night, but got stuck because the files aren't readable.
Simon yes i can hear the swirling noise when the R5II is turned on. Also, I shoot wedding and portrait photography, in your opinion and I value your opinion what is the best mode to shoot in, Mechanical or Electronic?
Seems like a upgrade compared to my R6 II. What do you think ? I will hit about 50.000 photos on my first year with this beast of a camera. Cant wait to upgrade to the R5 II after next year.
While some people assume that the ibis wobble is caused by a flexing sensor, I could never see how changing the lens would affect such flexing. I've assumed that the ibis wobble is related to lens distortion. The image circle from a non-stabilized lens does not move, but the subject image withing in the circle effectively moves as the camera shakes. I figure that the ibis wobble is caused when the image sensor follows the image through varying regions of distortion, particularly serious barrel distortion. If that is true, then the obvious way to handle this would be to have enough processing power to digitally remove the distortion from each frame as it is taken. The more effective the distortion removal, the less wobble across frames. Just a thought. Ken
Since you mentioned the whirling noise on the R5ii and other models, I pulled out my R7 to update the firmware and prep it for the airshow next week. And yeah, there's a sort of hollow noise like a light breeze passing an empty hallway sound in mine too. It's slight enough that you would barely notice unless it's extremely quiet or held your ear right up to the back of the camera. I stuck my adapted lens and my RFS 10-18 to hear if there's a difference, but there wasn't any.
The EOS R5 MK 2 has Gyro Data that can steady your video image better than IBIS when using video. You just need to remember your lens being used. GyroFlow is amazing
Quite easy block the air ducts with tape to confirm it's not air movement through the air ducts. But I think it's the ibis as the ducts allow the noise to be more audible
just add some tape over the vents (to stop air flow into the camera) and see if that sound goes away. It certainly sounds like airflow in pipes. I am in Germany and my new camera is waiting for me when I get home so I can't test it myself.
There is no airflow through the vents that can be perceived. I don't think they do anything without the cooling grip. I put a stethoscope on the back of the camera (with the display out of the way) and I could hear fan-like noise.
I hear the same kind of light whirring noise on my Nikon Z8. It definitely is the IBIS working. When I turn off IBIS or the camera goes into power saving mode it stops. It’s perfectly normal and apparently not unique to Canon.
This was a useful review. Looking forward to further updates. Regarding IBIS sounds, what I consider to be important is not whether the camera does this, but *when* it does this, and whether it does so unnecessarily. IBIS consumes power. If IBIS only operated when it absolutely had to, how much longer would the battery last? As from my previous tests, IBIS operation is dependent on what lens is fitted, and inconsistent across lenses. We know for certain this could be improved, because at least on the R5 Mark I, IBIS still operates when menu diving (and hence not taking pictures). Other times, too. Simon, could you comment on that? Does the Mark II still make that noise when diving into menus? It's not just IBIS though. When paired with an IS lens, the IS mechanism operates in tandem with IBIS, with even more power drain. Again, lens-dependent. So there is plenty of scope here for a firmware update covering several camera bodies and lenses.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker My investigation suggests the noise itself is not a bug, but the occasions when it does or does not occur certainly looks buggy. One also notices the sound when playing back a movie shot using the internal mic. I don't know how Canon could have missed this, but with the louder sound of the Mark II, they should now be onto it.
So was the test for wobble with 16mm? I have a 16mm on R6Mk2 and it’s noticeable. Would really like to know. BTW at 4:12 you mention you are going to show it again and then you dont.
IBIS wobble is also a problem with stills. I can confirm this on the Canon R7 with long focal lenses like 400 mm and electronic shutter. I have seen pictures with nearly shocking wobble effects. If you just look at one photo you will not notice this. But if you take the shots with a high frame rate (as you might do with wildlife photography) and then scroll through the images on your PC monitor, it is clearly visible.
Thanks for the information! Does the R7 have lens distortion correction? Was it on? Maybe I'll try repeating your experiment using an R5 and the RF 600mm F11.
@@KenWWalker The pictures were taken by a friend of mine. So I don't know the lens distortion settings. Because I had a look to the RAW files, I assume this is not the root cause. He had a R7 and an EF 100-400. So maybe the IBIS does not work properly together with the (old) EF IS. Personally I think the problem is that the readout speed of the sensor in electronic shutter mode is too long so that the IBIS / IS cannot keep the image stable and has to move during the readout time. And this movement creates the wobble in the image.
Need you guys with r5ii to test something out. Enable power saving by setting it to 30 seconds to sleep and also enable the EVF to sleep after 1 min. Go to video mode, and let the camera sleep. Wake it up so it wakes up back to your live view. What do you see???
I hate the fact that the red record square could be added to the mark I. It’s so hard sometimes to tell if it’s recording. Doing this to only new cameras is not right
Morning Simon Great channel. Mark II Supply in US may be Ok but the UK situation is less optimistic. I ordered the camera within 3 hours of the official release through a major retailer. I missed the first allocation and the retailer told me that they received enough stock to meet 5% of the waiting list leaving 95% of customers pissed off. Wish us luck that things improve soon.
So was the test for wobble with 16mm? I have a 16mm on R6Mk2 and it’s noticeable. Would really like to know. BTW at 4:12 you mention you are going to show it again and then you dont. Also - if I buy one I will use your link so feel free to put it in every video from now on. Thanks
Hey Simon ! The speed improvements you mentionned on the AF of the 200-800mm COULD be related to the added amp provided by the battery ! More power to drive those motors in photo mode ! Maybe it's not "just" for 8K 60p :)
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Since you have the 200 800, you could test it out with a third party battery. If AF is slower, then it would be awesome if you were the first to report it.
U didn’t talk about the video capabilities,is there record limit or overheating issues ? Or it is performing unlimited recording like R3.Can the files take ln from r5 m1 be used in r5 m2 to upscale ?
One of the things that bothers me, it’s people requesting features that they could have easily acquire shooting with a Rebel T 7 according to their level of skills.
I don’t think you’re exaggerating the IBIS wobble. You’re at 24mm where it should be fine. Imagine using a 15-35mm at the 15mm focal length. Would love to see that. That’s why I love my R5C with no IBIS. Question: can the IBIS be turned off and have the lens IS on only?
I can not hear a thing. But I am half deaf. So I am really enjoying the R5 Mk2 to say the least. The Autofocus is mind blowing, when I remember to hit the back button. Without AF-On, not so great....LOL(old Guy with Camera)
Re: the whirling sound, I hear it on mine and assumed it was a fan to reduce overheating.. odd Canon never advertised this because overheating was a big problem on the mark 1.
The new AF is amazing for birds. I think the difference is that the AI spots the BIRD first rather than waiting to see the EYE. Huge difference. It finds focus easily where the R5 might not find it at all. BUT . . . the image noise! Unless you have a LOT of light, you're going to have to deal with a lot more noise in your images than with the R5. Disappointing. Yes, someone will eventually come out with an effective denoise program . . . but I'd rather not have to depend on denoise. I want capture my images, not manufacture them afterwards.
I'm not sure if I will need it until after I test it. What climate are you in? Others have only gotten about 20 minutes. The other advantage is longer battery life.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Im in FL..so it was about 90 in the shade tho..no direct sunlight. And I was disappointed how it looked...it was sorta grainy and flickers. Shutter was 250th. But perhaps i needed more light at the frame rate.
Yeah, no significant update if you enjoy a fast autofocus that accurately tracks the subject or object regardless of any obstruction, dramatically improving the hit rate. Who need autofocus anyway, Manual focus give an honest result. ;)
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Thanks for the snarky remark. I did not say autofocus is useless. I was talking in terms of still photography, not video. Which brings up a point - if you view the portfolio of many photographers, including those that shoot wildlife, their images are stunning even before the latest and greatest hybrid camera. How do they do that without a stacked sensor or improved autofocus? Oh, they're great at their craft. It's not the gear, but the photographer. One of the more popular landscape photographer shoots with a 5D Mark IV; another with a Nikon D850.
@@jimbruton9482I can take a sharp photo with manual focus as well as with the Canon R5M2. It comes down to hit rate. I am well above 95% with over 14,000 photos this weekend and I like those results. Hi Simon Bit off topic but would like our advice on cf express for R5ii, I am looking at Angelbird 330 and delkin black 325 , to cope with the big files and high frame rate thank you
For an R5 mk1 I have an Angelbird AV Pro 256gb bought from a very reputable shop (CVP) and it’s been flawless at a great price, with good support. Really special product. Imho.
I think am in good place to advice you having used lots of them. Get a delkin black or prograde cobalt, this duo is the best in the industry followed by nextorage.
I've been using Angelbird since 2020. Never had a card fail. Look at the 3 year warranty, and the other technologies inside them. Not only do they design and make their own cards on site, but they have. high PE/
I have set my camera to dual back button AF. First button : AF with tracking, second button eye detection. I have noticed that my camera focusses, even when I do not press any of my AF buttons. Any idea how this happens? Is this something that I can deactivate? Is this linked to the whirling sound at the back of the camera?
I won't be purchasing the II. It's not the camera, it's the operator. I don't do sports and don't do big zoom wild life, so no point in ditching the R5. Matter of fact, my go to lens has turned into the old 17-40 from 2003. All this new gear stuff is nonsense. I shoot alone. Still enjoy your channel🙂

I feel the ”IBIS Wobble” is a non-issue. If the camera is on a tripod, turn it off. Why turn it off? Because disabling Image Stabilization when you are using a tripod has been the recommended since it was invented. Some users complain about it. When you ask for a video sample, it’s the camera is trying to focus and stabilize distant objects. The slightest wobble of the camera can and will cause the Image Stabilization to reset itself. People need to ask themselves what is the AF system supposed to lock onto.
Autofocus performance is completely subjective. There is zero consensus on any particular model being "the best". I remember how people would claim the R7 had the same autofocus as the R3😂😂😂
@@OrdinaryFilmmakerof course. There is zero concensus in the industry about which model has the best autofocus. Most fans of Canon claim it's a Canon model, same with Sony and Nikon fans.
@@germanshepherdmom5411I’ve been loving the camera so far, but also wondering how to get rid of this message as well
@@ItsBerg I noticed the same occurrence when I was photographing small birds today as well.
Hey Simon
Fro Knows Photo talks about the whirling sound on his IG account and confirms it’s not an issue and it’s normal .
I'll give that a try, but I avoid electronic stabilization as it often does things I don't like. I prefer post stabilization.
I didn't own a R51 but my R52 has a far superior AF system than either my R62 or R7, IMO!
Cheers!
It must be the IBS. It would be interesting to see how the camera looks inside.
@@michaels3003 Somebody will do that eventually.
One of the rare sane understandings of what is actually evident.
I've never heard of Samuel Saul. I'll take a look. Thank you! 😊
Minor correction *Samuel Saum
Thanks man. From the videos I saw, I was feeling I was watching red level cameras, impressive rolloff in the highlights.
@@Urbaniam Thank you!
I ordered my R5 Mk II from B&H just over a week ago and it arrived this past Thursday!
@OrdinaryFilmmaker
Well, I'm so used to waking up at and actively working at 4am daily, that I still do so on my days off.
I go to the beach and photograph seagulls because there are so many of them. But people probably think I’m odd. You can try telephoto and check AF.
@@darylcheshire1618
I did this to practice birds in flight shooting.
The R5II also has the ‘detect only’ feature, yes.
Yes the low frequency whirring type pain is there in my R5 mark II. Can hear it up to one feet with LCD screen pulled out, even with my age related significant hearing loss.
I bet this will be reduced in a firmware update.
I have had my r5ii since the 22nd and have not paid attention to the whirring sound, now I will have to listen for it
I'm afraid the red line around the screen is too small for me to see it.
The autofocus update is significant. Much faster and improved autofocus subject tracking.
Humming noise is on the R5 MK 1 too, however much lower. It is louder on MK II.
Thanks for the feedback.
Can you please try masking the entry and exit vents and then doing the same test ? Maybe the hollow tubes for airflow is somehow causing this ?
Most of the sound comes from the bottom vent, but there is no airflow from the vent as many people suggested.
The EOS R5 MK 2 has Gyro Data that can steady your video image better than IBIS when using video. You just need to remember your lens being used. GyroFlow is amazing
In 2018, I had a Sony a7III and its LCD showed the focal length of the attached zoom lens.
Quite easy block the air ducts with tape to confirm it's not air movement through the air ducts. But I think it's the ibis as the ducts allow the noise to be more audible
Will try that today
No airflow. Trust me. I put a stethoscope on the back and I could hear it as well (the sound is the loudest at the bottom vent, but this makes sense.
Temperature conversion from fahrenheit to celsius. 70 too 80°F = ±27,546°C. :D
I grew up with F even though iv been living in Canada for years. I only use F for my own use. When dealing with science, it is always C or K.
just add some tape over the vents (to stop air flow into the camera) and see if that sound goes away.
Shocking😮. My Sony R7 4 makes noises too.
Could be a big though. One only notices the sound when the camera is close - could have passed QA without them knowing it ws there.
I covered this in depth from a video two weeks ago. Attached pics don't pick up the sound, or if there is enough ambient sound.
They need to take the wobble seriously.
Can’t find this anywhere. Is the R5mkII Stereo audio? My R5 is mono-only. My mkII arrives tomorrow, so I’ll soon know.
Doing this to only new cameras is not right
Yes, there are some updates that they could have brought to the MK1, It is a nice enhancement,
the photography field/hobby could really use a camera like the R5II at consumer prices.
Morning Simon
Great channel.
Given how much the US and Canada got, I would suspect you will receive yours within a few weeks. They apparently did make a lot of them.
I got mine from WEX last week, but no spare battery
It looks like your 100-500 lens hood isn't on straight. Thanx for this video.
I'm wondering if that noise is compulsory or is it something that Canon missed. I will ask them after this Bank Holiday to hear what they have to say.
It is caused by the internal design. It is not a problem.
Great Review Simon!
Thanks Brian. I have more ideas than I do have time ;)
So was the test for wobble with 16mm? I have a 16mm on R6Mk2 and it’s noticeable. Would really like to know. BTW at 4:12 you mention you are going to show it again and then you dont. Also - if I buy one I will use your link so feel free to put it in every video from now on. Thanks
The wider the lens, the more pronounced it will be. With 16mm, the best option is to turn off IBIS
Hey Simon !
The speed improvements you mentionned on the AF of the 200-800mm COULD be related to the added amp provided by the battery !
More power to drive those motors in photo mode !
Maybe it's not "just" for 8K 60p :)
Good point.
Interesting idea. I wish the company "spoke."
I hear the whirling sound. Does the internal mic pick up the noise? Can you test not using external mic?
Watch my video from last week. I give examples ;)
My Canon R7 makes the same sound. And my Canon RP makes the same sound while turned off.
Is the whirring sound happening in video too?
I can not hear a thing. But I am half deaf. So I am really enjoying the R5 Mk2 to say the least. The Autofocus is mind blowing, when I remember to hit the back button. Without AF-On, not so great....LOL(old Guy with Camera)
assume there is pixel peaking in the R5ii..... not heard it mentioned on any video to date. has it got it?
Re: the whirling sound, I hear it on mine and assumed it was a fan to reduce overheating.. odd Canon never advertised this because overheating was a big problem on the mark 1.
There is no fan in the camera. The only fan is the cooling battery grip which is optional. I did not hear any odd sounds from my R5 Mk2 this weekend.
@@JohnSwen-p6b, it has a very quiet sound. It stops immediately when the camera goes in the standby mode.
I have a similar sound, noise in my original R5 mark 1
Larry Chen edition!
R3 has the same sound!
I hope to get out there today Bill and shot for the fun of it :) Got a review to do, but it doesn't have to get done today
I shot for almost 2 hours 4k 120fps....and I think I wasted my money on the cooling grip...never even got warm

It's gotta be the fan
Tiny fan would have a high pitch noise (it must spin at high RPM to move any air).
Filmmakers rejoice! The R5II is a great for video. Still shooters? - no significant upgrade.
I don't get a chance to edit my photos before they go to my client, so I demand a hit rate near 100%.
Hi Simon
Bit off topic but would like our advice on cf express for R5ii, I am looking at Angelbird 330 and delkin black 325 , to cope with the big files and high frame rate
thank you
For an R5 mk1
I have an Angelbird AV Pro 256gb bought from a very reputable shop (CVP) and it’s been flawless at a great price, with good support.
The sound is the ibis
Still no test of 8k vs 4k60 available on web to see what line skipped 4k looks like....
Cobra chickens!
Pretty sure the one that commented on canon whirring sound is from Sony user who rented a r5ii and try to find all the negative things about the camera hahaha
can somebody explain why so much hype for clog2 on r5mk2. im not a pro. canon clog2 and clog3 is in r6mk2. and i presume that clog3 is better and newer thing. ok r5mk has totally different sensor but why not clog3 in there? what im missing?
I saw comments that it is easier to grade.
How do I get past 1/8000 of a second in electronic shutter? I can’t find it.
It works in true ES and the appropriate modes. It is limited in the first-curtain ES.
@@michaels3003 That makes sense but I’m in electronic shutter, manual mode and it’s just not there. I can’t figure out where it’s hiding.
my r7 has the same noise.
😳
Does anybody know how many free cameras Canon gave out for these reviews? They’re literally everywhere.
I assume they were loaners, not "free cameras."
I thought it was junk now we love it ? I can’t keep up 😂
I never said the camera was junk. You might want to try active listening ;)
You should stop watching "trash" photo-gear channels. It is a waste of time.
It is fun
Does anyone know if the batteries in the cooling grip are hot swappable since they are separate and not on a sled?
The manual shows a magazine that slides out. Is this incorrect?
@@michaels3003 The magazine is for the standard extended grip with controls and controls/ethernet, the cooling grip has a big door on the back and each battery slides in on opposite sides of the fan unit so no magazine...which is why I was wondering if you could hot swap batteries. Probably not, but one could hope.
@@whiterock1865 , TY. I've found a video on YT. Asian Canon website has a detailed description of the cooling grip (but no manual). There is no note about swapping the batteries. The potential problem is that the camera may not realize that the state of charge has changed after the battery replacement.
I may wait till its in stock and walk in to a wex with my R5 and see what price they will give me also thinking of part ex my RF70-200 F2.8 for the 200-800
I'd keep both of those lenses and maybe just wait a few years. You'll regret losing them.
Weird how the electronic shutter is a downgrade from the R6 M2. 40fps with that one whole here it's 30fps
R6ii is 12 bit at 40 FPS and rolling shutter. R5 ii is 14 bit with minimal rolling shutter. So for a bit of speed loss you’re gaining image quality.
Ich kann die Probleme mit meiner Canon R5 Mark II (seit 20.8.) nicht alle nachvollziehen.

your 100-500 lens hood isn't on straight
I feel the ”IBIS Wobble” is a non-issue. If the camera is on a tripod, turn it off.
Why turn it off? Because disabling Image Stabilization when you are using a tripod has been the recommended since it was invented.
Some users complain about it. When you ask for a video sample, it’s the camera is trying to focus and stabilize distant objects.
The slightest wobble of the camera can and will cause the Image Stabilization to reset itself. People need to ask themselves what is the AF system supposed to lock onto.
maybe need teardown
Yes.
Your friend has clients that want 8K60 clips? Why...?
Maybe somebody told them 8k/60 is "the best" (until 16k is available...).
I saw a photo a bit out of focus....you failed.
whiRRing
Autofocus performance is completely subjective. There is zero consensus on any particular model being "the best". I remember how people would claim the R7 had the same autofocus as the R3😂😂😂
Subjective?
@@OrdinaryFilmmakerof course. There is zero concensus in the industry about which model has the best autofocus. Most fans of Canon claim it's a Canon model, same with Sony and Nikon fans. There is no "authority" that is accepted by those in the industry. It's merely one's opinion because until someone can come up with an objective test, that's all it can be.
