- I've been riding the new KTM 890 SMT for the last week and its time to take it on a decent run. I'm doing a 200 mile run down to see the Cerne Man In Dorset so we can check things like fuel range, comfort and see if this bike can really do the touring bit!

Interesting variant of the 890 platform; a sport touring hooligan. No announcement for availability in the US and being a niche model, not sure we will see it here. And yes, the Cerne Giant is quite giant😬. Thanks for taking us on the ride!
Another great review LCR, love your enthusiasm for this bike. Currently haveca 1290 SaS, and a Duke 790 and have test ridden the SMT and loved it but wasnt sure if it was worth changing the Duke for it. Well just waiting for insurance quote and the deal to be done. Cant ride it for a while though as just had 3 playes n 18 screws in my elbow. Cheers LCR,

Brilliant review Chopsy as always can't believe YT put an age verification on your last upload but I'm glad I've got to watch it I've always been interested in the 890 variants but I hate the fact of having to pay extra for the electronic package it totally puts me off

Great Video, I just love that 890 engine, I honestly didn't think a parallel twin could have so much character. I have a decat link pipe and an SC project Can on mine and it sounds so nice. Having seen this video I really quite fancy the SMT......

Whilst I'm not a fan of the looks. This bike was needed in the middleweight tourer/adventure esk category.
Had my license for all of 6 months, sold my Mt07 last week, and then hit the market for a sports touring bike. Quickly discovered, there isn't that many to choose from in the middleweight category that have the like off cruise, etc.
Whilst I loved the Triger Sport 660, it didn't have cruise control, big deal breaker.
Tracer 9GT, I love the engine, but the split dash and overall build quality weren't great.
901 Expedition:.Dealets said esrliest stock is April, so that was out of the window.
So, I ended up getting a 2021 BMW 900XR TE.
I can see KTM selling a lot of these..

I’ve got the 890r duke and this is tempting me because of the green lane potential… I’m going to try to organise a courtesy bike ride on one when my 890 goes in for a service.

You mention wanting the increased power of the 890 Duke over this version. Those of us who have or had the old 990s, thought the same about the 990 Super Duke engine compared to what we got in the SMT. The extra bit of oomph would have been nice, but I guess the engineers at KTM did and do this for a reason.

Great vid, I might be tempted if they bring out an smtr. I bought a 701sm last year, great bike but wonder would this replace it or is there room for both bikes?...plus my DRZ and Grom 😂. Are you still using a gopro on your helmet? Your quality seems better than my gopro hero 10 black unless youtube are up to their old tricks again on the video quality. 👍

Looks like a cool package… think I’d like to see a bit more R too… but sure its a great setup for most road riding. State of the UK roads you’ll be needing the 890 Adv Rally suspension anyway. 😅 Think it looks cool… I’d ditch the white front mudguard though, possibly even the rear… like my KTMs black/orange and my Huskies white/blue. 😅

In Australia you do get a lot of backroads you can use the large capacity adventure bikes on. Good fun with a decent set of knobbies, getting the rear wheel to slide around. Enjoy being out in the country,getting the bike dirty and impressing people on the way home.

I have to say that I really love bikes with bright coloured wheel rims. Not only do they look unusual and cool, they also make the bike more visible to motorists. So many bikes come in so many dark colours along with bike clothing, I'm of the thought that brighter colours on and off the bike make you a lot safer/visible. The Yamaha MT10 with the CYAN STORM colours is another great colour scheme.
Visibility is all about contrast with the background. Yellow high viz against a background of yellow flowers (rape seed crop?) isn't as effective as a large black mass (black bike, black leathers, black helmet) against the same background.
But it's horses for courses... of course!
If you were on a big orange KTM, though, you'd be more visible if you were also all dressed in KTM-orange, against a non-orange background 😂😂🤣🤣
Having said all that, I'll soon be testing out a bright orange biking jacket...

I own a 990 SMT and I'm still in love with it every time I ride. This new SMT looks like KTM did a bit of a mix between the old 990 SMR and the SMT 990 in terms of styling. I'm seriously tempted to get one to replace all my current bikes.
I love mine mate can't stop riding it done almost 3,000 miles on it
I think you should hold on to your 990 SMT and get another SMT in the future when it is better like your 990, KTM will have a new 990 engine next year. I think you would be more happy coming from your 990 SMT to a new 990 SMT and not this detuned 890 adventure engine

Nice bike Chopsy , one thing I don't like with my 701. Sm is the seat !!!! Brutal after 100 miles crippling on your backside , good to see the seat seems a lot better on the ktm now .👍 not sure I'm a fan of the buying a bike and paying a subscription for extras right enough 😮😮😮
Yeah it's lovely and comfortable with 90% of the hoonage of the 690 / 701 capability. Its very good

Hi everyone, I own the 890 Duke R, love it. And it's pretty obvious what kind of rider would want a Duke R. However, I'm struggling to determine what kind of rider is this bike made for? Is it just the middle ground between a naked hooligan, and a full fledged ADV? is that what this is marketed towards? Genuinely curious.
I would love to see you compare this to a tracer 9. Seems similar, maybe less capable off-road (in so far you would) and has that nice triple.

What would you think would be better as a (I know it doesn't exist) 50/50 bike? Adventure R with 21"/18" 50/50 tyres or SM with 17" 50/50 tyres? Asking for a friend.
True , I think this is the censored version (Quack) The same comments , a great all rounder . Fits a bigger rider so a big plus + . Just hate the front mud guard , looks like medieval Jousting equipment 😂. Just hoping for an R version with the upgrade bling .
I’m torn between one of these or a 1290 sdr. Took the sdr out on demo last weekend and was impressed and then took an mt10 out just for a 3rd on the shortlist. I’m lost and cannot decide chops what’s your thoughts ?? I’d love to know.

What would you change on the SMT, lighter wheels, exhaust, more power? steering damper… what would make it rock?
I’d call that a 890 duke. I got the standard 890 with relaxed ergos vs the 890R. And it’s perfect without the odd looks of the SMT.
Rottweiler airbox, full Tekmo system and a remap. Would be absolutely brilliant! 👌

It is funny how a lot of people seems so obsessed about figures on paper. HP here and HP there.. Higher revving engine is not what to look for in a super moto, you want the grunt low down. Wheelies, skidding and that hooligan style riding. I'm riding a husky 501 on the street, its a wheelie machine and an absolute crazy bike that makes you loose all common sense :) ... And this is just what I look for to take on trips to different places, cant annoy the same locals all the time... would have liked a V-twin for sure.. But a 890 tuned for low end power and suspension to ride like an idiot on rough roads and even some gravel ... Hell yes :)

Unlike you I think those high viz orange wheels are visually overwhelming, a thin bright orange stripe on matte black wheels would strike a much finer balance without sacrificing the intended liveliness and excitement

Not really interested in this bike even less so knowing it comes with demo mode which really sucks. Giving you stuff only to take it away again! The main reason I watched this video is I don't live that far from Cerne Abbas and have photos of all 4 of my current bikes and several previous bikes parked in front of the giant information signs with the giant in the background. Some great roads near there.

Incredible? I only spent just over an hour on one and hated it. Odd peg position (know that can be adjusted) and all the disadvantages of a naked bike. It has a small fuel tank and the demo I had was doing 34mpg so not great for touring. Preferred the 890 adventure. Really wanted to like it but I was left feeling like it's been hyped and has invented to extract money from those wearing rose tinted glasses by people who had the original SMT.. But maybe I'm missing the point 😂
