I feel like you are covering these topics more thoroughly than the other videos did and instead of giving the answers and maybe an extremely brief explanation other than "that's the answer", you give us a good explanation of why the answer is correct and the process behind it. I knew a lady who's husband used to be on the bomber runs that ran continuously out of there during the Cold War. Said he'd get a call and be gone for a long time. No advanced notice, no questions, no answers. Having said that, look at the length of the AFB runway vs Minot International and 'nuff said! At 13:13 this is a class E4 airspace. Any E airspace added to a class D airspace with a segmented line does not require atc permission . So just depends how high the tower is above the ground. If over 700 feet then you would need permission.

    question with Figure 23 @ 21:45, there's a shaded magenta circle "underneath" the solid magenta circle (Class C), which is a class E with floor 700' above AGL, so you would need ATC authorization even if you are flying at 701'.

    • @MrMigsClassroom
      @MrMigsClassroom  2 года назад +3

      Great question WHY. Yes, if you fly a drone at 701 feet AGL in that area with shaded magenta you would need ATC authorization. so in that specific example the outer ring of the Savanah airspace would be Class C from 1,300 ft MSL to 4,100 feet MSL, Class E airspace from 700 feet AGL to 1,299 feet MSL, and Class G airspace from 0 feet AGL to 699 feet AGL. So if you are under 700 feet AGL in the outer ring you could fly your drone without ATC permission because that is class G. But at 700 feet or higher you would need ATC permission.

    • @haplorhine
      @haplorhine 2 года назад +1

      @@MrMigsClassroom There are 3 types of Class E airspace: E2 (from SFC; also known as Class E Surface Area), E3 (airport 'transitional' area: 700' AGL), and E4 (airport 'enroute' area: 1200' AGL). According to 107.41, you cannot fly "within the lateral boundaries of the SURFACE AREA of Class E airspace [translation E2 airspace] designated for an airport unless that person has prior authorization from ATC". However, you CAN fly in E3 and/or E4 without authorization. So... if that lighted tower is hypothetically at 1250' AGL, as mentioned in the video, then NO, YOU DO NOT NEED ATC permission to fly, as long as you stay below 1300' AGL.

    Not sure if someone else has mentioned this but about 24-25 min, that question, isn’t that a shaded magenta class E air space as well? If so you would need authorization for inspecting that tower even if it was below 1,200’. I’m new to this so I could be wrong.

    • @matthewalcorn352

  • @alanabley525
    @alanabley525 Год назад +3

    First of all thank you for your excellent videos. Regarding the question involving the class C airspace around Savannah and photographing the tower, if the tower was 1,100 ft you would be below class e 1,200 but would you still have the option of flying 400ft above the tower without authorisation?

  • @shadduck
    @shadduck Год назад

    At 24:30 you talk about flying above a tower that takes you above the 1,200' AGL floor of/into Class E, stating ATC authorization is required... Couple of things; am not finding anything that states that upper level of E needs authorization, but if it is indeed required, how to get it? I'm very familiar with getting LAANC approvals, but it seems to only be available near airports and up to 400' AGL. So, how does one go about getting the authorization for flying above structures (in otherwise G space, or anywhere else above 400' AGL) that takes you into Class E space? Does the DroneZone website handle this? Also... is the authorization required above 1,200 AGL when nowhere near an airport? Trying to clarify this in my head, as I'm seeing conflicting info out there. The FAA study guide for this test ends its paragraph on Class E saying "in most cases, a remote pilot will not need ATC authorization to operate in Class E airspace," so I'm confused as to the requirement you mention... And this FAA page, under Rules for Recreational Fliers, #5, lists "Class B, C, D, and surface Class E designated for an airport" as the air spaces needing authorization (this appears to exclude authorization requirements for Class E airspace other than inside the dashed surface level surrounding an airport?). www.faa.gov/uas/recreational_flyers

    I rewatched this video and the charts are much clearer and easier to read now. Appreciate the Savannah airspace question and explanation. I have a question as I live in a mountain and deep canyon area, if I fly my drone 200ft AGL from my take off point over a deep canyon that is more than 600 ft lower than my take off point, am I still in G airspace? Thank you.

    • @MrMigsClassroom
      @MrMigsClassroom  2 года назад +1

      Hi Brock. Yes, you would still be in class G unless you were in a shaded magenta area. Shaded magenta is class E starting at 700 ft agl. If there is no other airspace near by class G goes to 1,200 AGL or 14,500 MSL (whichever is lower. In your situation your drone would be at 800 ft AGL so still in class G airspace. However that is over the 400 ft AGL hight limit.
      But I don’t think that is your actual intended question. I think you are asking if the AGL height is based on where you take off or where your drone is currently at. AGL is measured from your drone to the ground directly below it, not where you originally took off.

    • @SurLife
      @SurLife 2 года назад

If I find your school email I will send you my power-points. If you have semester classes like me I suggest having your students take the exam starting around week 10. Thank you so much for your videos! Can we did deeper into the Savannah Question? I understand 1200 would be Class E airspace, but let me give 3 possible scenarios.
    1. What if you were given the tower at (1150) in the question (below class E), BUT you know that you can fly up to 400ft over the obstacle, which would put you back into Class C. Does the FAA want you to include the 400ft? So the answer would still be Class C, or would it fall to Class G because it is under Class E?
    2. What if the question gave you 1295 AGL for the tower height? This would easily put you over 1300 MSL. Class C starts at 1300 MSL correct? What would be the correct answer here?
    3. For a variation on a theme, what if you were given at 1195 AGL tower heigh, which would put you over 1200 MSL (Class E)
    Thanks so much for your help!!

      @@Neal_Schier Thanks for your input. I think you are correct. Normally 400 AGL is the altitude limit but it would be possible to be within a 400 foot diameter of a structure and also be 400 feet above and then you might find yourself in Class E. The answer to your 1st question is it tells you “where” to look on the map in the question. The question stated to look at section 6 of the map. The large red circles in black trim with #’s in white font are the section #’s.
      The answer to your 2nd question is the 2 #’s are the MEF or Maximum Elevation Figure for each map quadrant. The 2 trailing zeros are dropped. So a 28 means the highest obstruction of any type in that map quadrant is 2,800 feet, rounded up. This is explained on page 13 of the FAA’s “Aeronautical Chart User’s Guide”, found here:

    Elizabeth City (13:42): why can't I just ask ATC for permission ? (instead of a waiver from the FAA)

    • @johnbankston72
      @johnbankston72 Год назад

      There are 4 types of Class E airspace: E2, E3 and 2 types of E4. Only type E2 requires ATC authorization and the Elizabeth City is an E4 type.
      You may think, while only type E2 requires ATC authorization, it’s easier “for you” to contact ATC than to request a waiver. However, it’s not easier “for ATC”. It’s easier on the network, overall, if you file the waiver, which can be handled more leisurely by an FAA clerk than by a potentially busy ATC.
      You can read more about the 4 Class E types here:

So wouldn’t that magenta line indicate that Class E starts at 700’ AGL, not 1200’? I’m confused 🤔

    • @MrMigsClassroom

      This is complicated. Honestly, it is easier to assume the answer to your question is yes. If you stick with all controlled airspace (b-e) requires ATC permission you will be fine on the exam. However, there are multiple types of class e airspace. E4 for example does not require ATC permission. The only E that actually requires ATC permission is a dashed magenta circle surrounding an airport.

    Hey, on the Savanna question, there is a solid magenta line and a shaded magenta line out there by the tower. Is this an echo space above 700', as well as a charlie space above 1300" or am I reading this wrong? Thanks

    Thank you for this. Been studying for a couple of weeks but your channel explains it the best that I've seen. How long would you recommend preparing for the test and how far out is their scheduling usually?

      Thanks Clay. I recommend 20 - 40 study hours. Make some flash cards for rules and terms. PSI is the testing agency. You can book 2 weeks in advance.

    Savannah airport you said it’s in E airspace at 1200? Wouldn’t it be E airspace at 700 agl cause of shaded magenta

    my biggest problem with the supplement book is that the information is so small I can't see it very well at all. I wear glasses and I have had eye exams and they say that my lenses are correct but those legends and charts are just not large enough.

    On the Savannah question isn't that area class E from 700 ft and above because of the faded magenta border?
