  • Methicillin resistant staphylococci have become a ubiquitous challenge for both physicians and veterinarians. Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) are amongst the most problematic and frequently encountered resistant staphylococci. It is important to understand the mechanism of methicillin resistance, the production of altered penicillin binding proteins in the cell wall, because this phenotype confers resistance to ALL beta lactams! In this lecture I briefly describe the history of methicillin resistance, laboratory considerations for its identification and a summary of contemporary issues in veterinary and human medicine caused by MR staph.
