I heard pure carbon/activated carbon doesn't work too good. Charcoal would be better for gunpowder then. But maybe that would be something worth testing.

charcoal is better than activated carbon for black powder/gun powder. The best charcoal for black powder is made from woods like red cedar, willow or paulownia. it will go puff in less than 1 second

All commercial black powder, as well as "regular" gun powder, contains graphite for one very important reason: It lowers the risk of static electricity building up. If you are going to play with explosives such as this, please add a little graphite to lower the risk of unwanted static electric spark ignition. Graphite transfers electrons better than copper.
Graphite slowed down the burn. Mixing while wet controls static ignition. Also in place of water use human piss. The products you body threw off . Makes the powder produce more velocity when fired out of my 45 and 50 calaber muzzleloading rifles. Powder granular size plays into the equation also. And tumbling the sized powder to polish the sharp corners is another option to make the powder burn produce shot to shot consistency. (Less velocity difference shot to shot.
Also after mixing press the powder into a puck. 2 to 3 inches diamiter about 1/4 thick. Using a 10 ton press. Pressig helps remove excess moisture.. and produces a denser product. Then break puck into the different granular sizes. By grinding it up. Then sift through different size screens to get granular size.

DO NOT CONFUSE gunpowder (smokeless powder) with black powder. BLACK POWDER IS CLASSIFIED AS AN EXLOSIVE....smokeless is not! THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE!
You gotta be really, really careful with dry black powder around plastic, because unless the air is very humid, plastic can build up a static charge and make a spark. Black powder is very sensitive to sparks, even tiny sparks that you can't see. You should either moisten the powder or use metal utensils, not plastic.

Actually this is perfectly usable. What makes black powder go bang is confinement. Igniting it in a small space allows a build up of gas and a rapid spike in pressure and temperature, which causes the reaction rate to increase many times over. Pack that same 1g tightly into a cardboard container and cap the ends, and ignite with a fuse. It will definitely go bang!
