The whole concept of driving slow cars fast is amazing. I’ve owned some fast cars but these little cars have way more character. My current stable has a 1997 Miata 2017 GTI that is tuned The GTI would smoke the Miata in every aspect from acceleration, braking and handling and yet the Miata is more fun to drive.
I have a 97 NA as well. Just got back from a long drive with it. They are special cars, as I'm sure the 2 in this video are. And oh, QUITE a bit more affordable. I have a 91 also. The 97 is red and the 91 blue.
22 min video with two of my favorite cars ever from one of my favorite channels? Don't mind if I do. It sucks that both of these cars were once affordable and now are pretty much becoming unattainable for the average person. Especially if you actually want one in nice condition.
Bang for your buck..get an e46 m3 and Honda s2k. I did and will never look back. Both still parked in my garage and driven weekly. Easy to maintain, enough power for the streets, and styling to stay classic forever
I have a 1987 E30 316 carburator, it's only 90ch but it was my first car, I used it as a daily and each day was a pleasure to go to school ! You're right about spending money for the maintenance, I bought it only 1700€ (in France) but spent almost 3300€ fixing a lot of stuff... For a student it was hard but I would do it again if I had to ;) I drove it 2 years before switching it for a brand new mx-5 1.5L ND because of gasoline consumption with 100km/day i have for my first job (switched from 10L/100km to 6L/100km while keep driving with fun the foot to the floor) I'm happy with the miata, but i kept the E30 for week-end because it's so much fun to drive, in a different way ! Whenever I thought of selling the E30, I took it for a drive and after less than 10mn, i was like "Hell no, no way to sell it..." hahaha E30 forever ;)
As a current owner of a 1985 Porsche 911 (my father bought it before the price boom) I can say that they are an absolute blast to drive, honestly if you can afford it, buy both. These two cars are unbelievable and come from a different more analog time that made driving fun.
I bought an E30 M3 back in 2004 at 21 years old at arguably it's lowest valuation. Very glad I did! Still my favorite car in the whole world! And I can put my kids in the back.
I owned and daily drove an E30 M3 for nearly 20 years. For some of that same time I ran a Porsche race shop. The way I always described driving the E30 M3 was that it danced, so it was cool to hear you describe the handling similarly. You can rotate it on demand with use of the pedals and steering. I used to occasionally bring it out to a PCA autocross and it would absolutely dominate the Porsches in that setting. I even beat an imported (not legal in the USA) 996 GT3 more than once. I’ve owned a lot of legendary cars in my life, and the E30 M3 is one of the few that lives up to the hype. It just sucks I sold my E30 M3 for $7K and will likely never own another. At least I have the memories.
Having to work around the M3's lesser power makes the car more engaging which adds to the fun factor. One simply can't power through a 30 mph up hill corner but must shift down probably two gears and get the rev's up to maintain one's pace. And that is fun. Also, if you're driving public 2-lane roads out in the country side, well you'll still be going exceedingly fast if you're pushing it. So the E30M3 has it. And the old 911SC? Nothing to complain about. Nothing at all.
Fantastic video. The scenery, the roads, the cinematography. For old car guys, this is surely one of the all time great car videos of these 2 iconic cars.
The E30 M3 could be a 318i below 4000rpm for someone who has no clue how to drive it. But IF you know how to drive it in its powerband, it goes like a bat from hell. Goldielockzone: 4500-7500rpm. Remove the limiter and it will keep putting out power well over 8000rpm until it destroys itself. You have to work hard with an S14. No lazy, low rpm torque but screeching high rpms is the way to go. Trust me. I know.
to be honest, the M3 is not worth it... not even by a longshot... yes, it looks good and it is rare, but if you want good fun. E30 with a upgraded engine and suspension all day long... I have a E30 touring with a M30B35 in, fast and fun!
Paul, you picked what....I'm shocked. I'm so surprised Todd didn't fall over. If I wasn't sitting down, I would have fallen over. It's cool, I'll pick the Porsche. Todd, bring Paul to the hospital ER for an MRI on his head. Obviously, he must have some kind of head trauma, lol. I hope you're both having a good day, take care.
@7:37 with a lighter weight vehicle, 192hp can be extraordinarily playful, especially with a high revving four banger. There's so much talk about 0 - 60mph numbers in automotive journalism, I believe that the ~40 - 80mph range gets forgotten.
YasumotoUS especially when its a motor sport engine downgraded for the homologation car.. also in dtm, where it was designed for, rolling starts were used ✌🏻
This video is amazing! Can you add clips of the gauges while driving next time? Watching the needles move around on older cars is awesome. Keep up the excellent work!
This is such an engaging Video...well done guys ! I have an E30 M3 and was about to sell it....watching this video helped me arrive at a final decision not to sell. I look at these videos and marvel at the fact that...Wow!!! I actually own an E30 M3. Great stuff ! The car may not be as fast as current cars but the character and feedback from this little angel is phenomenal and cannot be matched by anything on the market today.
I had 3x g50s and a 915 - preferred that box for driving pleasure - g50 good for everyday use tho'. The aural pleasure of the 3.2 is totally unique and perhaps the best bit of the experience. Great motorway car - perfection at a steady 100-110 mph.
I would love to see you do a comparison video with this same E30 M3 and with a 1987-88 Porsche 944S (not the base, and not the turbo.) Those two cars are almost identical spec-wise, and were what people cross-shopped back in the late 80s.
I owned an 1989 E30 M3, 1986 944 Turbo, and a 944 Turbo Cup car. While the 944 Turbo was cool, and definitely faster, the E30 M3 is just magic. The E30 M3 is the better/more fun car to drive by a pretty large margin to me. For a while the 951 was a pretty good used car bargain, but unfortunately not any more.
I own quite similar cars for years: a 3.2 with a 915 gearbox and a 325 I e30 convertible. Both wonderful cars I would not sell. I hope I can add a nice Audi Quattro Coupe to the collection soon.
Two of my favorite cars from most likely my favorite period, from a driver's car standpoint. Seeing this video makes me want to get something smaller than my BMW E60 M5 sitting in my garage.
A little quote:"... 5:34 So it's not the fastest car on the planet and nobody cares. Smiles get bigger the faster we go..." Let's call this a blatant contradiction.

I love your honesty!!! your bravery is admired. I agree with you a 100%! well done.
While the 911 has the promenance to be a competitor to this E30, I feel like a 944 is closer to an actual competitor to the BMW, especially the NA. Neutral balance, coupe, front engine, water cooled, similar power, handling, and 4 cylinder. I guess the 911 survived like the M3, but that's it really. Especially when price is factored in, get that feel and fun for a fraction.
I would agree, but I would say the '87-'88 944S would be the better competitor. The higher-revving 16-valve 2.5L four cylinder with 188hp is directly on par with the E30 M3.
I love driving my older cars but man it’s hard on my wallet sometimes since I’m a working student. I will not let go of them though anytime soon it’s a whole different driving experience
These are out of reach for many of us every day drivers. What more affordable, modern (safer) cars are comparable? MX-5, S2000, GT86, first gen Boxster? Great video as always. I’d love to you throw in a modern car against an older car though you’d get hate for it.
Both epic! I owned an 87 Carrera and it was an event. Ha ha. Loved that friggin car. But these guys are on point. I have driven several of the gen 1 M3s and they are so awesome.
The mid and late 60s Porsches and the BMW 2002 tii and CS 3500 were the first German cars that caught my eye in the old Autoweek/Competition Press and Sports Car Graphic. Do you boys know about those rags?
Great revisiting this one again after watching it on TV. Excellent video with great production values. On that note, I was wondering if you've ever considered moving to 4k HDR filming? With the great cinematography you guys have, it would be awesome to see it in even higher resolution (and more especially with the greater color depth of HDR). Just something to think about if you haven't already! ;)
I'd trade three 911s for a classic M3 E30 in white like this one. That's why they're like 50-60 grand to get one now. Ultimate driver's car that dominated DTM and Touring car racing in the 1980s. I own a white 2020 Subaru BRZ (w/ performance package) that's like a modern throwback to the E30. 200 HP, perfect front/rear balance. manual, tight steering, lightweight, toss-able, rear wheel drive, OMG.
I suspected that it was. Utah, is amazing. I’ve only driven the southern half of it and it’s very different to the north. I am from the UK and did Utah, Colorado and Nevada as a trip, brilliant. Even the interstate in Utah is breathtaking.
Both of them great cars...personally, I'd take the 911...and probably the 911SC, which harkens back more to the earlier feel of what made Porsche special. Down a bit more HP, and uses the 915 over the G50, but that requires even more engagement, and I think better. But all of them great. I've owned BMW and Porsche, and it's the Porsche for me. Overall, love them both
"Porsche 911 vs BMW M3, E30 vs G50 Carrera 3.2" - It is plain silly you do not give the YEAR of the cars you talk about in the TITLE of your video... You should give this information at least in the DESCRIPTION, but you don't! - You have to go to the 17.20 minute mark to realize you are talking about a 1987 Porche 911! And "This 1st Generation M3"? -- After watching the ENTIRE Video, still don't know the years it was made. I know it was in the 1980's, but don't know which specific car you drove in this long video! Another example is your MIATA video talking about 'various generations'... When you say "This generation" of car, it would be nice to know the years it was manufactured by the company and it would have been helpful if you listed this information!... This would make it so much more informative. - Don't mean to nit-pick or be overly critical and I do enjoy watching the videos you make... They are very well made.... Just some 'constructive criticism (provide a bullet point summary of the cars you are demonstrating, with model years etc.)... This will improve each page. Thanks so much for your efforts!
Great video guys! My practical side prevents me from owning either of these but I am making due with the grandchildren, 997.2 and E82. Looking forward to more excellent matchups!
These cars are an ode to a specific time period of mechanical achievement where the suspension, steering racks, and engines all provided a well balanced, but not perfect car that gave such a unique experience. Whereas today's cars cost cutting measures and "safety protocol" excuses multiplied by over engineering equal a ubiquitous -numbing experience.
One is a SPORTS CAR, the other a Sports Sedan. It's like comparing peanut butter, and crunchy peanut butter. The Porsche is more real . Great video ,I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just watched a current Vintage Daytona race and amongst the exotic fair , the stand outs to me was a BRE replica Datsun Z driven by John Morton. And an old school racing 1st Gen RX7. In the field to me they stood out as..." What is that " Time has made them look more Exotic over time ...very interesting !
If only modern car companies put some thought and effort into driver experience relative to steering input, driver to road connectivity, and feelings of raw emotion triggered by the driving experience as they once did.... Now all the "driver connectivity" is placed in steering wheel buttons and superfluous infotainment screens. The only "connectivity" modern cars have are there wi-fi services....
So true. I remember hiring my first modern BMW and was so excited because they upgraded me to a 3 litre with all the toys. What a disappointment that was, like driving a sofa.
I like the E30 M3, and I drive an '87 Porsche 944S. For two years Porsche made a 944 with a 2.5L 16-valve four, and the spec sheet reads VERY similarly to the E30 M3, especially the '88 cars(this engine would live on in 3.0L form in the S2 and 968). Power is within four horsepower, both have big, boxed arches, both have similarly slow steering, both have trailing arms at the rear, both have great brakes, and very docile, chuckable handling. Unlike EVERY other 944, the S has a 7k redline. The 944S doesn't have much motorsport tradition to lean on, unless we want to count the 924 GTP that ran at Le Mans and won its class. In true Porsche form it really feels like a dedicated sports car, even if its something of a bitsa.
The '87-'88 944S is the exact right comparison for the E30 M3. I drove my '87 944S as a daily driver for 23 years, put over 200,000 miles on it. Loved that car.
As I said elsewhere in the comments, I owned an E30 M3, 944 Turbo, and a 944 Turbo Cup at the same time. The E30 M3 was the most special of the three to drive. The 944 S wasn’t nearly as exciting to drive as the E30 M3. The 944 really needs the Turbo power to be exciting to drive (to me). I don’t have enough seat time in the 968, but that might have been a decent choice if you want to avoid turbos and you can find one with a manual.
Both fantastic driver's cars, but neither of them is what I consider attractive. Iconic? Unique? Sure. Attractive? Not even close. Great episode. I drove an ND MX-5 which is supposed to be "back to basics" and while it is a great car, it doesn't come close to feeling as mechanical as cars like these. Even my '01 Z3 3.0 feels like a different experience than anything modern. We don't need faster cars. We need cars that are more engaging to drive. I don't know if any new car will ever offer that again.
Fact is: BMW didn't build enough of those m3's they are more rare, while Porsche built a ton of 3.2's and similarly fun 3.0 SC's..I love my SC and will never sell it nor trade it for an E30 M3. Just can't see that happening.. an Elise maybe...
I don’t know if you got a chance to drive those again. Watched the show a long time, but for some reason I missed this episode. The e30 looks modded, and that G50 looks extremely stock. Two things is - make sure the suspension is sorted on the 911, the E30 looked much more sorted, suspension-wise - and then make sure you’re between 4k - 6k on that 3.2 pretty much all the time, totally changes the driving experience. You’re right that the M3 is fun and peppy, but just based on engine sounds, if you were driving the 911 as hard as you all were pushing that M3, you might have felt different. Maybe not though, who knows?
I'm not a rich guy either, I traded the 06 Cayman in on a 19 Elantra....boo to me. I'm a trucker who loves driving, and I'm currently saving for a 718 any form, Cayman or Boxster. I've rented it twice and don't care if it's a 4 banger,. it's an awesome engine, and it's a tremendous Porsche, even better than my 06 Cayman, but not as charming as my 85 911 was.
I owned an E30 M3 for nearly 20 years and I agree with the chip (Jim Conforti did mine) and Dinan cam sprocket. Absolutely no suspension upgrades were necessary, but I did upgrade to 16” wheels so I had better performance tire options. I was beating 993 GT3 Porsches on the autox course with that setup.
@@jimwong2823- Yeah I would think 17” wheels would be better today with tire sizes having gotten larger. And yes it was fun being a “giant killer” on the autox course at PCA events with the E30 M3. I think people were shocked at the numbers I could put down with that little Bimmer. Obviously on a full size track the 993 GT3 would easily win.
@@GrimSRT8 dinan camber plates so unique. So much contact with front tires. Steering response is a match. Unfortunately tire lasts about 8,000 miles. Factory soft shocks. car plow. Seriously I would recommend anyone to drive a dining suspension. Your jaw will drop. And I have 22 BMW
Iknow a guy that bought a 87 911 with 132K miles for 14K in 2005. He sold it a few years later for about the same. That same car now in days is almost twice that cost.
Wow. They really did their best to ruin the beautiful lines of cars in America... Those bumpers/fenders on that 911 and the 3rd brake light almost ruin her... Both legendary cars!
The E30 M3 offers an amazing driving experience, but it's not a $50k driving experience. These were undervalued at $15k, but at $50k they are way overvalued.
Having owned many legendary cars, raced, race instructed, ran a Porsche race shop, etc…I totally disagree. The E30 M3 lives up to the hype. Now at over $100K for a pristine low mile collector car I get your point, but at $50K for a nice driver it’s a great value.
Covercraft giving free shipping is like a slap in the face...I hope they treated you better. If rather not have a code than feel like I'm having my shopping savvy challenged
If you think the M3 is boring, put an Alpha N airbox + tune on it and you‘ll get the sickest induction noise from any car ever

I miss the days when I used to run my Datsun 280z with my friend Cams e30. That was a special time.
Went from a Porsche 981 GT4 to a '84 Carrera. The '84 is just magic. Better than a modern GT4 IMHO. It's tough to drive but really fantastic.
Seeing that cardinal red leather interior in that M3 makes me really miss mine, and regret beyond belief selling it! 😭
If you look like Nicholas Cage in real life, then I don't feel that bad you sold the M.

These are out of reach for many of us every day drivers. What more affordable, modern (safer) cars are comparable? MX-5, S2000, GT86, first gen Boxster?
Great video as always. I’d love to you throw in a modern car against an older car though you’d get hate for it.
I've always wanted an E30 M3 until I got my Porsche 968. It's everything I wanted out of the BMW M3 and yet the M3 will always be special.
Utah makes your reviews so much better.
Wow... just wow! That was beautifully done. Well played fellas, well played.
Great video !! Where was it filmed ?? Would love to drive it !!
Awesome film and amazing cars.
Great job guys. 👍🏼
I would probably call it a tie, but drive the M3 4 days a week and the Carrera: 3!
Great videos as always 👏🏾
Both epic! I owned an 87 Carrera and it was an event. Ha ha. Loved that friggin car. But these guys are on point. I have driven several of the gen 1 M3s and they are so awesome.
'80s cars are the best cars ever made. But hey, everything was better in the '80s!
Great review 😊 best way to start my day.. thank you 😎
3.2L 911 FTW!!!
Makes me wish I was born 20 years earlier so I could have actually experienced more 80s cars
Both cars are now Bangers in the modern era
Absolutely brilliant
epic...
The mid and late 60s Porsches and the BMW 2002 tii and CS 3500 were the first German cars that caught my eye in the old Autoweek/Competition Press and Sports Car Graphic. Do you boys know about those rags?
Both great classics I can’t through salt on either one 👍🏽 beautiful
The GOAT E30 M3
Great revisiting this one again after watching it on TV. Excellent video with great production values.
On that note, I was wondering if you've ever considered moving to 4k HDR filming? With the great cinematography you guys have, it would be awesome to see it in even higher resolution (and more especially with the greater color depth of HDR). Just something to think about if you haven't already! ;)
you guys give a great idea of what is actually driving those cars, love your inputs. LOVE your Channel
I can't afford any of these cars, but If I had the money, I would take the 911 because I always liked 911 as far as I can remember
Owned an 87 3.2 Carrera. Neither this BMW, nor anything else, comes remotely close. No Chance.
Jason Schauer Easy kiddo. We get it you are a narrow body P fan :/
Great video guys.
Nice video as always.....but give us an idea of the filming location. You do film your stuff in some amazing locations.
Salt Lake City/Park City/Provo, Utah areas mainly.
Thanks so much for your efforts!
it says it 22 seconds in.....
Great cars and beautiful road scene.
Great video guys! My practical side prevents me from owning either of these but I am making due with the grandchildren, 997.2 and E82. Looking forward to more excellent matchups!
Sorry, Paul, that Porsche's steering wheel is just fugly.
Agree. Many owners change out the wheel as they really hate it.
I’m a Porsche guy. Like really! But that M3. What a look. But the color and the wheels aren’t doing the Porsche any good IMHO.
So M3 it is.
Wonderful. Thanks guys.
You know what makes the cars, the video and the driving *extra* special? THE ROADS! Where in Utah is this? Anybody know the Hwy #'s?
I like the intro music and the music at 2:00!!! What is it?
This video deserves more views...
That's why I'm an M car guy. Even though I don't quite own one yet 🤔
In the field to me they stood out as..." What is that "
Time has made them look more Exotic over time ...very interesting !
This generation Porsche is one of the best built cars in the world.
My dream cars.
do you have a column where I can read more?
Not a fair comparison. 2 different weight classes
Great job guys.
Just can't see that happening.. an Elise maybe...
guys, the lead in music doesn't work. it's just not everyday driver.
What does chuckable mean? Send it?
E30s are 90k-190k its crazy
I'm not a rich guy either, I traded the 06 Cayman in on a 19 Elantra....boo to me. I'm a trucker who loves driving, and I'm currently saving for a 718 any form, Cayman or Boxster. I've rented it twice and don't care if it's a 4 banger,. it's an awesome engine, and it's a tremendous Porsche, even better than my 06 Cayman, but not as charming as my 85 911 was.
E30 M3 needs a chip and sprocket plus Dinan suspension. M3s true beasts
@@GrimSRT8 993gts 281hp vs m3 205 hp Advantage Porsche.!! Every BMW MasterTech claims my m3 have 17" wheels is best handling car.
Funny, you didnt mention why the e30m3 was made? And what they accomplished racing. Zip....
When are you guys going to put that Icon episode up on your RUclips page ?
Icon is one of our feature films. It is available only on Bluray or streaming on Vimeo.
Iknow a guy that bought a 87 911 with 132K miles for 14K in 2005. He sold it a few years later for about the same. That same car now in days is almost twice that cost.
Reading your comment two years later. Now 4 times the price. Or more....
Used Low: meaning like completely wrecked?
