    WELCOME TO SEASON 5 OF FTB FILM STUDY WITH COACH NICK CODUTTI!
    To kick things off, Coach Codutti crawled between the ears of Penn State starting quarterback Drew Allar to examine what the talented thrower saw and didn't see during his first season as a start in 2023. Codutti dissects Allar's decision-making, read progressions, willingness to push the ball downfield, in-pocket movements, and mechanics -- red-flagging areas in need of improvement and highlighting areas of strength that helped Allar throw for 25 touchdowns a year ago.

    The best part about all of this is that Drew and the coaches know about all of this bad stuff and I trust they’ve been doing something about it

      Well he has a whole off season to review his bad decisions from last year. Hopefully WRs are better this year with route running and way less drops!

    Thought I remember from your first Kotelnicki video that he runs a lot of play-action passes. That seems like an issue for Drew, doesn't it?

    Woof. Let er rip kid.
    Although the struggles with PA scares the heck out of me (given that Coach K's system is predicated on it), it also puts into perspective some of the comments I recently heard from Drew. He said Coach K has him confident in the system and playing more and thinking less. That is a typical / boilerplate message of course, but in this case it could really be true. Trust your guy to be there, trust your line to hold, step up and let it go.

    I've been waiting for this breakdown from you guys all summer, great stuff as always!
    Very frustrating to watch the throws he wasn't willing to take, this video confirmeded most of what i saw watching the live games last year. Seeing how different he is using play action was very surprising. Seeing him fold under even slight pressure in the pocket was very noticeable last year and a big red flag going into this season with such a young o-line.

      And yes, Codutti spotting the trouble he had readjusting his vision when he actually sold the PA was the most surprising aspect of this to us, too. Hadn't seen that discussed.

    What happened last year? Allar looked great at West Virginia and then the vertical passing game soon went down hill with McClain sitting on the bench. Not much production [especially at slot] with Clifford, Evan and Saunders disappearing in favor of Warren, Johnson and Singleton leaking out. No safety valve to get in rhythm with on the slant.
    Allar had everyone in his ear. Afraid to throw an interception. Misfiring on short routes. Getting frustrated. Opting to throw to crossers, and KLS finding dead spots in the zone. Young secondary got carved up by Ole Miss but Kiffin's passing game was miles ahead of our TE offense.
    So with the recent departures, does Kotelnicki have the players to develop a vertical passing game to keep defenses honest based on what Allar can do?

      Was just telling someone today, "doesnt allar's wv performance feel like it was 100 years ago?"

      @@ForTheBlogylots of rumblings of the WR room breaking down very badly. Lack of film study, no WR leadership. KLS not helping when he could have. We shall see.

    In HS they would put Allar 8 yards back and go five wide and just let him throw it to the entire football field. He probably never got moved off his spot. It's natural that he struggles with pressure and with stuff like PA. But at some point he just has to get better at these things. I think if we don't see it this year, it probably won't happen.

    What would it take to get Coach Codutti to come to PSU’s staff? His observations and analysis are the best of any analyst I’ve observed. He would be a valuable asset to Penn State

  • @CowboyRibeye
    @CowboyRibeye Месяц назад

    I think a lot of it had to do with not trusting the WRs. We had two transfers that were mid, and a diva in KLS. We gotta hope that has improved or is improving. That plus bad routes. Not pulling the trigger is on Drew, but finding reasoning is helpful. He was a gunslinger in HS. Never afraid to throw a pick or two and four or five TDs.

    Why cabt you listen to Drew Allar tell you himself what he has trouble with!!! He said he had trouble how first full season as a NCAA starter because he went through his projections to fast & didnt allow the play develop & his reciever room had two guys that poisoned the room with their ego & to when you practice everyday against the best db's innthe Ncaa you Don't gain the confidence you need to compete at your best. This team will shock you this season & so much negative media against penn state all the fn time it's so obvious their is an inherent fear of the rise of this program because it it really something rare & special. When we are on top katybar the door because we are going to be there to stay

    Do you think this has a lot to do with him being a first year qb?

    • @ForTheBlogy
      @ForTheBlogy  2 месяца назад +10

      Multitude of factors, in our opinion. We thought it was a disservice to Allar that Franklin didn't purposely work in Allar for a series or two when the game wasn't totally out of reach in 2022 -- ala McCarthy w/ UM in 2021. While Allar had 100+ throws as a freshman, none of them had any real stakes. 2. Sounds like PSU coaches last year told Allar, don't make mistakes. Win with defense. To us, that was the wrong mindset. And then WRs were sub-par. Running game wasn't explosive. Playcalling was a tad repetitive and (therefore predictable.)

    Coach Codutti I'm curious what you thought of Yurcich's scheme? I thought Yurcich scheme didn't help the WRs. It was the Anti-Spread....lol, and another reason we didn't see much passing deep downfield. Too many routes where the WRs/TEs were all bunched up only about 10 yds downfield not creating gaps or open spaces for the WRs to run to? Your thoughts?

      Editor here...great question that we'll make sure to direct to Coach Codutti. Just wanted to give you a heads up that Codutti has been without power since Monday because of Hurricane Beryl...in fact, this video was supposed to run this Sunday but because of the storm and the chance he might lose power, we bumped up his deadline and released it earlier.

    Great stuff. Now let's see if the kid can actually make plays against a good team. His stats are full of fluff from playing C/D level D's. I want him to be good just as much as anyone but don't have much confidence he'll be anything more than average

    Alarming to struggle in play action given that it's generally the most advantageous way to throw the ball. Generally if a QB struggles, their best friend is PA passing. Have to hope that gets fixed this year.
