Joni will never know how much she has affected us with her music. I'm 67 this year, and have been a continuous fan for all this time. Love you so much, Joni, for so many things.
I too have always been haunted this song. Heard Tom Rush's version in 1970 and it is still my favorite. My wife always loved it, I played it for her when we met in '71. It was the opening song for the Celebration of Her Life this last spring. She got the urge for going and I had to let her go. i hope she still loves it, make me cry every time. Fly on, Little Wing
BEAUTIFUL heartbreaking sorry so for your loss I'm needed to read this stumbled across while playing this treasure for my 32 year old son.....so now yes the tears, it's very necessary sometimes, bless your heart and your wife and thank you for sharing💔💙
The thing that astonishes me about this song is that she was so young when she wrote it (20, 21 or even younger). This song contains a level of angst and pathos that is usually not experienced by people until they are older. The language is highly creative in a "world weary" kind of way, again something that usually takes years of experience to feel. It also exhibits Joni's natural talent for the popular song. The song is perfect in every way -- perfect lyrics, perfect melody, an appealing subject. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest pop songs ever written. It astounds me that she managed to write such a song at such an early age. It should be pointed out that in the same general period, she wrote some of her classics -- Both Sides Now, and the Circle Game come to mind. From a very young age Joni had a mature view of the world.
You said it. Just as Joni could paint what was in her mind, her thoughts pour right through the pen to the page. She rarely revisits her early stuff, if ever. Her first album is great. And later, The Hissing of Summer Lawns is thematically the tightest album by anyone. Thanks for pointing out the old soul that is Joni!
Remember: She would have David Crosby as a record producer who taught her how to be a record producer and two not so shabby Canadians named Neil Young and Leonard Cohen to talk to when as she was breaking out into a larger vision of herself. Also, one she wrote Blue and the Hissing of Summer Lawns she wrote all of the songs in Heijira after the cocaine soaked 1976 Tour with Dylan and dozens of others. Heijira was an album that sounded like no one then or since. It was a strong, honest, female statement of love and life. Whereas most of the men on that tour, including Dylan himself, would not produce anything good for years, if ever! She left the Tour and ran on the beach in South Carolina until she had exhausted all of her desire for cocaine and any desire to imitate anything from that tour.
Indeed, I have always noticed that her songs and conversations were full of English idioms which artists today rarely apply in discussions, were they not taught literature? just wonder.

She perfectly nails what a Canadian Prairie winter is like. The weather is reflected in her craft - her songs and her paintings. As is the flat landscape. I mean, how could it not, to grow up that way. Writers more articulate than I often write about it.
I have loved Joni Mitchell’s music since I first heard her sing when I was 16. I’m 71 now and think that her music gets better as time passes. Thanks 🙏
My favorite of all her songs - there's a video of her singing it when she was like 17 or 18 on a Canadian Television show. How could someone so young write words like this? I first head Tom Rush's version of this in the early 70s. Loved it then but, now, at age 60, it hits much closer to home. Beautiful
Michael Korry Actually, she was 23 when she sang it on Oscar Brand's Canadian TV show. (Just search RUclips for "Oscar Brand Joni Mitchell".) Her live performance of this song was unbelievably great, even better than this studio version (IMHO).

This song is mentioned in a new book of stories by Amy Hempel (2019). I had just bought her "Greatest Hits" and I can't stop playing it. She is part of my youth and has such a soulful voice. My brother, three years younger, just loved her when he was in his 20's. If we could only go back in time instead of just in our minds, what a wonderful thing that would be.

1966 I'd stop fairly often in the later afternoons at a Yorkville Toronto coffee shop called the Riverqueen (or was it the Riverboat, I can't remember) on my way home from school (UofT). If I was flush, I'd order a cappucino, but most of the time just a house blend. Joni was the waitress who took my order and served me my coffee. The early evening (or late afternoon) wasn't a particularly busy time for the shop. When Joni had accommodated her acne pimpled customers, she was allowed to take her guitar onto the small stage and perform. She blew me away. She was singing only to myself, unless there happened to be a couple of other customers that day. Trouble was that she was a couple of years older than me, and I knew from prior experience that even women (girls) my age were getting it on with males five years older than me, males who owned cars, who could buy booze at the liquor stores. And this is I think one of her finest songs, maybe as good as Chelsea Morning, after which I named my daughter.
Yes, it's a wonderful memory, but it has its downside. Joni, far as I know, still lives on a populous island not that far from myself. I don't know what her situation is cognitively. I would love to take the ferry there, in hopes of meeting several other people also I know or knew who live (or perhaps used to live) there, but what do I tell Joni should I meet her? Hi Joni. I'm the pimply kid with buck teeth that you once in a while poured a coffee for, who was in love with you way before you became big?
If I were her and you said that to me, I would consider it an amazing compliment. Maybe you should. As we get older, those connections with our past take on a new significance and meaning.
Sometimes they do. Sometimes it ain't so great. My dad was in a nursing home between his 92nd and 93rd year. One of my favorite Joni songs. I had the 45, one side was "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio", and this gem on the flip one.
I awoke today and found the frost perched on the town
It hovered in a frozen sky, then it gobbled summer down
When the sun turns traitor cold
and shivering trees are standing in a naked row
I get the urge for going but I never seem to go
I get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in
I had me a man in summertime
He had summer-colored skin
And not another girl in town
My darling's heart could win
But when the leaves fell trembling down
Bully winds did rub their faces in the snow
He got the urge for going And I had to let him go
He got the urge for going
When the meadow grass was turning brown
Summertime was falling down and winter was closing in
The warriors of winter they gave a cold triumphant shout
And all that stays is dying and all that lives is getting out
See the geese in chevron flight flapping and racing on before the snow
They've got the urge for going, they've got the wings to go
They get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in
I'll ply the fire with kindling and pull the blankets to my chin
and I'll lock the vagrant winter out and bolt my wandering in
I'd like to call back summertime and have her stay jut another month or so
She's got the urge for going and I guess she'll have to go
And she get the urge for going when meadow grass is turning brown
All her empires are falling down
winter's closing in

Beautiful song. I think she’s channeling Rachel Field’s “Something Told The Wild Geese” here.
Such a magnificent genius. Not heard this extraordinary song before. Also I think that her song Clouds Is possibly THE greatest contemporary song ever written. Must have almost been frightening to see such a young person come out with such unbelievable wisdom along with exquisite melody!
Beautiful song!
Thank you Joni for your music that helped me during my teenage years and I used you as my mother figure and I hope this doesn’t offend you or anyone but you have been a great influence in my life and I appreciate you. Love 💕
Thank you for this wonderful slide show Christian! This is one of Joni's most beautiful, heartfelt songs. Her music reaches my soul.

Joni Mitchell of my dreams... The best music ever.
Standard Joni breathtaking genius.
An Autumn lament.
Joni has a talent that to me is not measurable because it's so immense. Makes me always want to go to my love and tell her again how much I cherish her.
first real frosty morning here in my southeast coastal NH community brings this beautiful poetic Joni Mitchell gem- center stage... "summer time is falling down", every year, like an October Ray Bradbury story about old New England in all it's autumn/spooky finery, Urge for going is classic tale only Joni Mitchell could delivery, an early works with such detail, a classic works..
One of my all time top ten songs, love it,please share this pure gold with young people, they deserve to know these great songs, thank you

Urge For Going
Joni Mitchell
I awoke today and found the frost perched on the town
It hovered in a frozen sky, then it gobbled summer down
When the sun turns traitor cold
and all trees are shivering in a naked row
I get the urge for going but I never seem to go
I get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in
I had me a man in summertime
He had summer-colored skin
And not another girl in town
My darling's heart could win
But when the leaves fell on the ground
And bully winds came around pushed them face down in the snow
He got the urge for going and I had to let him go
He got the urge for going
When the meadow grass was turning brown
And summertime was falling down and winter was closing in
Now the warriors of winter they gave a cold triumphant shout
And all that stays is dying and all that lives is getting out
See the geese in chevron flight flapping and racing on before the snow
They've got the urge for going and they've got the wings so they can go
They get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in
I'll ply the fire with kindling and pull the blankets to my chin
I'll lock the vagrant winter out and I'll bolt my wandering in
I'd like to call back summertime and have her stay for just another month or so
But she's got the urge for going so I guess she'll have to go
She get the urge for going when the meadow grass is turning brown
And all her empires are falling down
And winter's closing in
And I get the urge for going when the meadow grass is turning brown
And summertime is falling down
I first heard this the year I moved to Alaska. It's been my favorite winter song since then over 30 years in the Last Frontier.
1 of my favorites by her. There are so many . . .
I remember the first time I heard Song for a Seagull. I was 16. It totally blew me away. Nearly 60 years later, the feeling is the same.
Absolute Genius! 💖 💖 💖
I am so glad to have come to age in the 60’s.
I have admired her songs and singing since Wood Stock. Love this song make me want to pack my bags and travel. MN
Um...she wasn't at Woodstock. Check your history.
Great photos man.
This was actually recorded in 1967 - very advanced for back then, and still timeless.
how this song missed it's mark is beyond me? only now it's just vaguely popular..

I agree. I once had the privilege of hearing her perform live.
