UK immigration debate with Reform's Richard Tice and Professor Jonathan Portes | The Daily T Podcast

  • For this special episode of The Daily T, Kamal and Camilla do a deep dive into one of the thorniest issues in politics: immigration.
How much is too much? Are immigrants the reason our NHS is barely able to cope and there aren't enough houses?
Or are they a scapegoat for other problems? Are immigrants necessary for economic growth and give more to British culture than they take?
To answer all these questions and more, Kamal and Camilla are joined by Reform UK's chairman Richard Tice and by Jonathan Portes, professor of economics and public policy at the School of Politics & Economics of King's College, London and a senior fellow at UK in a Changing Europe.
They also unveil some exclusive Savanta polling on public views about immigration, plus share some readers' letters on the issue.

Swamped by people who are totally alien to our traditions - by people who hold no affection for the actualities of our history, heritage, or hinterlands. Of our 1000 years of development as a people.
And the second aspect is the threat of Islamic takeover. Something simply ignored here. The issue that we are all supposed to bury our heads in the sand over, the metastasis of fascistic Islamism within our country.

Rafe Mankoo said that at current rates of immigration, the UK will be majority non-white by 2075. That's the EU's plan. Is it a coincidence that 44 million muslims live in Europe today ?

Tice is correct that a lack of cheap labour drives innovation and automation. Compare Brazil and the UK in the 19th century: In Brazil an endless supply of slave labour was freely available, no need to do anything more efficiently. Quite the opposite story in the UK.

'Stable equilibrium' is essential: my concern is not only for the present and foreseeable future of the UK but for the long-term - 100, 200, 300, 400 years and beyond. An extreme example of population growth is Pakistan - in 1947 they had some 33M; just 80 years later it is 245M . . . How will the finite UK cope with exponential population growth?

Sure, immigrants pay tax and so contribute a small amount to the on-going maintenance costs of public services. But they haven't made any contribution to the capital costs of existing public service infrastructure which has grown up after decades of contributions from the existing population and their families. So obviously there is a huge net financial benefit to the immigrant in gaining a share of this. They would have no reason to migrate otherwise.

Most people have no problem with ordinary Muslims most of whom are decent and hardworking.
The problem is radical Islam. There are thousands of Islamists who preach hate against the non Muslims (even some Imams) and want to see Shariah Law in this country. I know several ex Muslims who have been severely beaten on leaving the Islam Faith and a few of them are in hiding and in fear of the lives from their own families and own communities for daring to reject Islam. The police aren't interested. They don't want to incur the Wrath of these communities. I fear the Labanisation of the UK
These are the ones that we are afraid of.

Another exercise in bean counting as opposed to the systemic issues involved in immigration. The big elephant in the middle of this discussion is culture. The cost of immigration can be measured by cultural fragmentation and discord and the related growth of identity politics. Without a common culture, trust will always break down, but many immigrants are unwilling to affirm a common culture.

    • @christinefiedor3518

And another nadir consideration is that overseas qualifications are not always comparable, just ask anyone working in the health care sector. Qualifications should be diligently cross referenced with the uk equivalent to ensure standards don’t slip. The talk of getting immigrants to fill jobs in social care fills me with horror for all sorts of reasons. But nobody seems to talk about that.

Camilla, good on your son, but why can’t the opposite happen too, maybe see a Muslim reciprocate and take on the British way of life/culture for a short time, to make sure that complete integration takes place. To me it always seems one sided, we have to always accommodate them, even changing some of our laws. This is rather a one sided programme.

An income of around £41k a year is what someone needs to earn to be a net contributor to this country. 85% of those coming here to work on visas won't be net contributors unless they go home and never use the NHS,Education etc.
