I also wanted to buy a 40th Anniversary Custom 24, but for 8k there is nothing special except that it is limited to 400 guitars. I will buy another PRS on the second-hand market.

Yeah I was sort of interested but my local dealer told me they’re $6,850 here in the USA. I don’t feel like these are unique enough to be worth a $1300+ up charge over a regular 10-top.

I think it’s not just PRS; all the big guitar makers seem to be floundering at the moment, even Fender.

Exactly, many brands seem like there's not really much left to innovate, prime example is Fender's new ultra models, great guitars but not a big step up from the previous generation. These days it seems many special edition guitars tend to target a small demographic with deep pockets just wanting something to add to their collection that sits on the wall untouched.

I might not have been in the market for one but it is always fun to see what PRS will come out with when it comes to the dragons or the other special editions. This dragon compared to the previous is just a little flat I agree.

I bought a Charvel MJ DK24 HSH 2PT this morning. I was going to buy a PRS DGT, but the Charvel just gives more for half the cost. Compound radius fretboard, stainless jumbo frets, heel mount truss rod adjustment, locking tuners, Luminlay side dots, etc. For me, the Charvel just fits all the requirements and the Japanese quality control is fantastic. Maybe one day I'll get a PRS.

    • @Foe1971

Very much agree with you. As the owner of a 35th anny Dragon I am very happy I got it when I did because this 40th is as you say, disappointing. The fingerboard and coloring doesn’t make aesthetic sense to me, the inlay IMO is quite underwhelming esp compared to the 35th, I like the dirty finish but everything else - underwhelming is the perfect description.

I agree. I have a PRS CE 24 from Wild West Guitars. I bought it a few years back and it has a beautiful top and feels great. I paid under 3k. The PRS S2 10th Anniversary play very nice too, again under 3k. These new guitars are for people with money to burn.

I would tend to agree with your sentiments here. I have sold off most of my PRS in recent months, and have just held on to the special ones: Collection Series IV Brent Mason and a first edition (PRS Experience) Private Stock JA-15.
Would recommend you trying a James Tyler guitar. Im not a fan of crazy colours, but i am a huge fan of their dann huff signatures (just ordered the huff original classic model).

I agree with what you are saying , the latest guitars are underwhelming , i have a core 594 with the low output pickups in flame lemon which is a great guitar i bought it when they first came out i also have an Australian eagle in the blue which they only made a total of 12 with the blue only 3 which is also a great PRS but sadly i don’t play them because the longer i live i realise i prefer a good fender telecaster for it’s simple playing and tone .

I thought the exact same thing when I saw those two guitars.
The dragon looks like they are trying to appeal to the Game of Thrones fans but that isn’t the buyers for this guitar. The inlay almost looks like a cartoon has an animated feel to it.
That 2002 single cut is still jaw dropping.
I’m afraid PRS has painted themselves into a corner so to speak. Their clientele buys traditional, but traditional doesn’t bring big money.
Traditional guys won’t pay 20k for inlays so what do they do to make a guitar above what their custom shop guitar is?

Totally agree on the colors, I call these Old Man colors, any sunburst, the browns like this. I liked the Paul's 85 when it came out, but hated the color, so I never really bothered going after one.
One thing I liked about the NF 53 was it's interesting black on white. Or give me an orange, purple, green, heck even red or blue any day over one of these browns.
I would personally love to see a PRS headless guitar, but that's probably the *last* thing Paul would ever try!

Cmon they're not too bad, I have a PRS custom 24 from 2009 and its quite good except for the rotary switch for pickup changes. It looks great and the finishes are fab, but it is still hanging on the wall or in the case as my Ibanez and Fender strats are my preference. Are the "special" PRS's worth the money, no.

Its kinda weird they used a European inspired dragon but its reversed from right to left like a eastern inspired design. I would have prefered an eastern style loong dragon in the yakuza tattoo style shooting down the neck like your summoning and shooting it off the fretboard, and it isn't crawling up to burn your pick hand.

The 40th anniversary custom 24 is way overpriced in my opinion for a custom 24 10 top. With no extra features other than pickups, headstock and the 40th truss rod cover. Honestly, if you want a 10 top there's good deals online at reverb or other places nowadays. That's where I got mine and was glad I didn't pay extra 1500+ for it

Gibson has not come out of their quality slump either. Bought a $3,300 Gibson Les Paul, Slash model in April of this year….by June, I was having some mayor finishing issues. Gibson washed their hands and blame it on me! Never buying a Gibson again in my life! As a matter of fact sold all my other Gibson guitars.
