I only knew this from the hours of boredom school has brought me😂
🤣
LMAO SAME except for y the jagged edges part
So true.

This is the video I've been looking for since I was a 5y old
Glad I could help!
@@JaredOwen when is space shuttle animation?

Ok... I've used these pens my entire life and I have never been more fascinated about them until just now. Amazing video man! I've watched a lot of your stuff and I absolutely love every one :D Keep up the great work!
I know right. Did feel kinda embarrassed not knowing how these everyday things worked!
0:28 lmao like we didnt know that from school boredom lol
Today I was so bored I tried speed running assembling and disassembling my mechanical pencil
Yo same dude I did that once and I challenged my classmates.
i never did this huh
Anyone who's ever had one of those in school has taken it apart *ATLEAST* once
@@minoru1137 Yeah! I sometimes broke it... So many lost springs and cams...
Kid who takes apart pen at school: *the expert*
Yes i am the expert
*WE*
Kid who can fix it again.. Proffessional mashAllah
Me: Oh no my pen dry
*proceed to take it apart XD
I’m pretty sure if you had these in an American School you took these apart and acted like an Engineer dissecting this thing
X-90 i did that
X-90 i did that
X-90 i did that
Mine doesnt open, I have to cut through
i did that
I'm another person who wanted to fix my favourite pen that I dropped and broke. But the whole video was fascinating. I love pens. I hope you still enjoy making these animations.
I opened a pen once and i rearanged some of the stuff and somehow made a small canon lol
I did too, but i found out about it from my friend
At school, I think we made a similar item of what your describing. We called them penetrators. Get it? We took out the ink cartridge and flipped it so it came out of the back of the pen. Next we either got rubber bands or the built in spring and attached in a way so that when we pulled the back of cartridge and released it would 'fire.' They were extremely lethal. After one or two were made, the whole grade caught on so we went to the shops buying the items needed to make them.
One day we had a relief teacher, an old lady with a temper. Some idiots started firing the ink cartridges at her, thankfully missing, but hit the data projector screen instead. They got caught, and the teachers did a search of our bags and pencil cases, one kid had an assembly line in his bag for mass production. So, yeah that was grade 8 for me. We didn't have school shootings, we had penetrators.
Me too, but with a led one.
pretty sure all you need to do is put the spring before the cartridge
@@benharris211 what? The kid has an asembly line on his backpack?

Help full
For knowledge
Thanks 😊👍
my god it took me like an hour to figure out how to put together a pen that was broken, the entire time I thought that the cam went on the top, nope! lol. I would have never guessed, so I took apart one of the other pens. Engineering ftw! It was a very satisfying feeling to get something to work again. That was a work out for my head.
You could just buy another one if not you are broke!
man.. you are stupid
The best pens are the ones you can take apart to turn into cannons.
Just put the spring between the button and the cam and hope the pen has some sort of lip that the cam fits behind but can be pushed past with enough force.
The Pilot pens seem to be the best for this, but you'll need to do extra modifications if you don't want your parts to go missing.
You didnt need to teach me the parts, i already knew when i was in school
Then why the hell are you here? 👊
@@phyrojazeargon3072 "curious"
Dude these animations are incredible. Your video on the Apollo missions blew me away. I already knew everything in the video, but the animations were too good not to watch all the way through. Nicely done, you need more subs!
Thanks so much Andrew - comments like these help me keep going!

After i watch this video , i search for click pen .
After found one its actually has a clear upperbarrel so i can see the mechanism.
Yes its the same like the video said
I had a pen like than once. Thats the main reason why i already know this stuff
same lol. I once had a clear clicky pen
They're surprisingly robust for all these small plastic components. I took a crappy old pen and clicked it a couple hundred times then put it in water and it was fine
The Best demonstration clip about how the click pen works, very easy to understand... Bravo!!!
Yours, is one of the best channels on the internet!!!
Tkx!!!
Back in the 1950s we had push button light switches in our home. Press once for ON; press again for OFF.
To make things more complicated, 120 volts was passing through there somewhere.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I took apart a pen and couldn’t figure out how to put it back together and I watched this and put it back perfectly (I don’t know how though, the pen was so much different from the one showed but still a click pen) thank you 😊
Glad to help!
We take so much for granted.
I would have never guessed that such mechanisms and physics go into making a pen.
It's amazing, all the things we have in life today, that we don't truly appreciate.
It's pretty neat isn't it!

Just FYI my 22 month old son loves your videos and requests to watch them every single day. Especially the mechanical watch, Krispy Kreme donuts, and the gumball machine ones.
I was trying to fix my clicky pen, all the videos out there only show the steps to follow for each model of pen without explaining the principle of the mechanism. So it doesn't help if your model is different. Your video is a universal help hahaha
Me, already opening clicky pens millions of times:
*I'm 4 parallel universe ahead of you*
Thanks... Had a broken pen and this helped me realized another piece was at the bottom of my bag, now i have a working pen again!
Thanks for the very clear and comprehensive video. It actually gave me inspiration to fix my clicky pen! :)
did you fix it?
In 0:37 seconds I was able to fix a click pen to the first time thank to you. That's the power of genius!
This is amazing, I never thought that so much engineering is used in a pen
I'm building a revolver-style T-shirt air cannon for a robotics team. Thank you for explaining this mechanism so well, I'm planning use a modified one of these to rotate the revolver drum, driven by the barrel sliding forward and back. Cheers!
It was interesting.
Thank you, Jared Owen, for making this video because I use to think for hours to together thinking about a click pen.
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG!! AMAZING JOB
Thank thank you I did not know what was the cam for, you saved my life
Because my favourite pen fell apart.thank you 😊
Jared writing the script:
“Alright, what should my next video be on?”
**clicks pen to start writing**
**gasps**
*I’VE GOT IT*
It almost happened like that😜
LMAO XD
i found a clicky pen that works in this exact way, and it's kinda clear, and i just watched it click and saw the cam rotate
never noticed it before, that's really cool
Thank you for such short and clear explanation!
That's crazy!!! I was just thinking about that today at school!!!!
I figured it out, but I'm still watching for some reason...
I was never aware of the hidden guide edges which prevents the cam from sliding back while the pen tip is extended. The other parts we can easily see when we pull the pen apart. Life mystery finally solved thank you. (This video also made me pull apart a pen I had on my desk!)
I'm stuck at math class (my last period) clicking my pen again and again trying to figure out how it works , thank God I'm notified to you
I swear i feel like Owen teaches me more stuff then my school
Excellent! Thank you for putting so much time and work into this explanation!
Very instructive video, many sincere thanks for this amazing job.
As everybody, I have used these items for decades without understanding how they work, but thanks to you, tonight I will go to bed smarter than when I got up this morning !
I follow the mechanisms as you stated and my pen works. Thank you
This was so helpful! The 3-D imagery of the components allowed me to fix my dad's pen, which was given to him as a souvenir from my sister's trip to London. :-)
Most hard working humans, bring one imagination out for long time, nice videos.....
This officially the "3 am video"
Thanks I needed to fix my favorite pen, I literally just needed to watch 1 minute to fix it thanks for the vid buddy!
Too good.....I can't describe how good it is.....
I just loved it
Watching this in school since that part behind got me curius.great tutorial
Someone was clever enough to come up with this design.
I am fascinated how much people doesn't understand how something so easy as clicky pen works. Even kids in elementary school that disassembled it for few times can figure out how it works. But it's interesting to see it from the inside.
Thanks for your comment Jirka!
The animation is so smooth
Your video saves me from suffering after I’ve fixed my broken pen for half an hour. Thank you very much!
Glad to help😀
Jared Owen, you are so talented and gifted 😊
Give this man a medal 🏅
😁
Looked complicated but you made it easy!
I'm glad he also calls it a clicky pen
He should do a video series on how a modern car works. That should give him plenty of content between the engine structure, the door mechanisms, the windshield mechanisms, the gearbox, etc. Plus, he can use the car radio/GPS to take a break on the car and explain how they work.
India... Loves a lot your animation more clear and understand very easy.
I didn't knew that a pen has this much science in it.
Thank you so mucho you saved my favorite pen’s life 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you. Everyone pen I disassembled had something covering this part
I have spent so much time at school taking them apart, and rebuilding them. Lol I actually found out how they work last month.
excellent demonstration. I have a vintage clicky pen I'm trying to fix. now I know it's probably the cam that's messed up.
This video found me when I needed it most.
I learned this the hard way and ink got all over my shirt
How? Did you break the ink cartridge?
KagemandenDK bend it and the ink will spill from the back or you can take apart the front
@@win5954 Bend the ink cartridge? That's just stupid lol
@@KagemandenDK Kids do stupid things, you know
I already know this because I was bored waiting for others to finish their paper in an exam but I just watched it because the animation is cool
kudos for you animation work and your efforts..it is simple, good and easier to understand. Never knew a clik pen had such good mechanism :)
I am trying to figure out how to make a jig in my tablesaw advance 6.25mm each time. Got my toothed rack and a rotating gear that mesh great. 2 days of tinkering with levers and springs later, it just might be this clicky pen video that solves my tooth by tooth advancement glitch! Subscribed.
Nice, very informative, I had always wondered how all those parts worked together
+Terry Royer Thanks a lot! Videos like this are a lot of fun to make.
I've watched too much Neebs Gaming... I hear that song, and I picture a guy slowly climbing a ladder.

this helped me so much, i've been stuck on how to fix my pen for months, it wouldn't click in, thx
Very beautifully explained.
This is a really nice video. Now I know something I tried to know for so many years. Thanks a lot. Great way to explain really complex mechanism

You are awsome!! I watched this video about 10 times to solve my curiosity. From Korea
Thank you!
Thank you so much for the knowledge. Great animation.
Never expected pens to be so completed.....

"Clicky pen" Is such a wholesome name
You have god and the power of 3D modeling on my side
Congrats! You just earned instant sub!
Thank you!
Jared Owen ya welcome!
This kind of pen i understand, the type of ped i dont understand are the pens with the plastic wedge between the button and ink cartridge. It like switches sides and somehow is... idk blah
The video we didnt want but needed
Thank you for making this video. I’ve always wondered about this, before I saw this, I thought that maybe it had two cams and each cam was the same kind of cam that’s converts the linear motion on a steam locomotive. I thought that the button press moved the cam, which converted the linear motion into rotational motion, and that that rotational motion turn a wheel whose rotation was restricted to one direction via a ratchet, and the movement of that wheel was attached to a second cam, which converted the rotational movement back into a linear movement. But I was always dubious of that, because these pens never get jammed. So thanks for clearing that up.
omg...never before i realised that :) great job
Every student who had one knows how. We all take it apart and put it together so many times we all understand it
This was awesome, thank you.
Its cool how smart humanity is
I love these animations. So cool.
Thank you Shelise!
I am totally using this for designing 3D printed mechanisms. :)
