I went to leave my neighborhood to get on the highway, and go to work ( I live in rural Colorado). There was couple of police cruisers stopping people from getting on the highway without chains. No joke, the storm was CRAZY. So I called my boss and told him what was going on, and I swear I had this exact conversation. I told him my life was not worth coming in so I could serve people coffee. (I was a barista). Got written up. Better than dying.
I also was heading to work in Colorado, but the highway patrol had closed the interstate due to a blizzard. When I called in to work, they actually asked me to “try to come in anyway.” Ummm, no. I don’t think so. 🙄

RIP Dodi. She was threatened with getting fired if she didn't stay when the weather was getting bad. Later she was in a horrible car accident and passed away. No one should be forced to work when bad weather is too hazardous to drive to or from work.
Her coworkers should’ve notified her family of the situation that led to her fatal accident. That company and manager should have gotten their butts sued off! I worked at a hospital. The weather was icy and bad that morning. A coworker rolled her truck and still drove the rest of the way in. Our manager couldn’t grasp why she had no intention of working all day, after that. SMH
The manager saw this coming and had asked the lawyer to buy a life insurance policy on their valuable employee, making them collect a cool 2 million dollars tax-free (yes this is legal in the US).
I ran off in the ditch in a snow storm back in the 80s…no cell phones back then..I had to get towed out of that huge ditch and when I got home I called my supervisor to let her know what happened…. There's a supermarket chain here that has a union but they haven't always been helpful. It all comes down to the union stewards and officers, and whether the rank and file keeps them on their toes.
I'm not risking my life for any company if they want to fire me fire me for no reason I will sue you!my life is far more important plus I am not doing overtime if you're not paying me you will pay me for my overtime or you will have problems.
i went into work during a bad winter storm. 90% of the staff had called out. I was one of the few that live near work and had 4 wheel drive , so I was able to navigate the roads. I did let the Manager know that if the weather got any worse, I would not come in the next day. Guess what? I was told that I would be written up, if I didn't show up. I told them to go ahead. @@churchofpos2279I feel ya I have a 2 wheeled rear wheel drive truck that I have to put sand bags in the back of just to get around in the winter. I had a boss that I asked if it was ok for me to ride in with someone who had a much better car for heavy snow, she started 1/2 earlier. He said no, so when it snowed I called. Then when summer started he was letting a coworker come in early and leave early for FOOTBALL games. I had to schedule PT appts for the same time. He said no. Then mgmt tried to get a co-worker in trouble because she lived outside the city and HER town had a driving ban one day in a big storm, while the company was located in the city and the storm hadn't reached us yet so we didn't have a driving ban on yet.

I had a supervisor put me on for an 8 a.m. shift for the week after my vacation. 1) He wasn't supposed to put me on the 8 a.m. shift without checking w/me first because I had seniority and I didn't want that shift; 2) He was supposed to post that schedule by Monday afternoon two weeks in advance, but he didn't post it until Friday the week before my vacay AND I had that day off; 3) he was definitely in violation of the contract. I read him the riot act when I got in after vacay and was told I was late. Nope, dude!
When there's no one there, you as the manager have to do the job. Pretty clear-cut. I had to do it when I was a team coordinator. That's why I didn't want to be a coordinator anymore.
Yeah, this is why managers get paid more! It's bcz you agree to take on the responsibility of all the employees you are assigned. If they can't come in, it's your responsibility to cover that shift. Hence the better pay that you recieve for accepting that responsibility! I don't understand why ppl think that you get paid more just bcz you are "more important" to the company. It's bcz you accepted the role of taking on all of these expectations! Good for her for going to higher mngnt, to get this cleared up and understood! And I love that they are demoting this mngr, and putting her thru training again! Hopefully she learns her position a bit better, this time around. Lol
Federal law is that all employees must be treated equally. If they write one person up, they have to write everyone up. If they don’t, they have no defense against the lawsuit that inevitably follows.
I had a manager that had a habit of changing schedules willy nilly after they were posted. Schedule changes were to be brought to the attention of the individuals who were affected. After the 3rd time I was threatened with a write up and proof that I was not informed about the changes, I got corporate involved and that manager no longer was an employee. I was not the only one he was f-ing with.
If they write anyone up, they have to write everyone up. Federal law in the U.S. This has been litigated all the way to the Supreme Court and the companies lost every time. They must treat all employees equally. That means if one person gets a write up for the same offense that 50 people committed, all 50 people must be written up.
I don't tolerate BS like this. I don't request days off, I TELL them that will not be there on specific days. It is not a negotiation, and I will gladly do what I have to.
We had that huge hurricane just before this last one. The streets were flooded. I had to just about swim from my bosses car to my house. The next day the called and told me to stay home and safe.
First off, if every single employee calls out because of bad weather, then obviously you can't write up one person out of 50.😂 That is a lawsuit ready yo happen. Yep, go ahead. The manager will be fired. Second, my life, totaling my vehicle versus a write-up or a (safety)point? At one place, I got a safety point for going to a doctors appointment for my back, and they knew this before they hired me. But they get kudos for hiring g a retired vet. I have never heard of a vet without some medical issues. 😂 Ah. If they would listen to themselves. And thank the gods they can't listen to my thoughts.😂

We waited the mandatory hour and nobody that had a key ever showed up. We left. Next day, everyone got written up on the line for not being there. Grievances were filed.
