How Does America's Response to Climate Change Look From Abroad? | NYT Opinion

  • The United States has a schizophrenic relationship with the environment.
It boasts a spectacular system of more than 400 national park sites; a robust environmental lobby; and strong federal environmental law, including the landmark Endangered Species Act, which is credited with saving the bald eagle and the grizzly bear from extinction.
Yet it also harbors a dark side, including an insatiable appetite for fossil fuels; a longstanding romance with behemoth, gas-guzzling vehicles; and perhaps the highest per capita generation of plastic waste in the world.
For the video above, we collated data and other information about America’s posture on the environment and presented them to people from other countries that, in some ways, have made the United States, the wealthiest country in the world, seem like an environmental laggard.
Their reactions? Well, check out the video to find out. But an Indian participant seemed to speak for everyone when he remarked, his face furrowed in dismay, “That’s … that’s America?”

I’d love to know what you think about how your country approaches environmental issues, and what you think they could do better.

I think countries should stop calling all this a global warming issue because it's not just about that. Even if global warming wouldn't exist cars are still polluting the skies of cities, trash is still filling land, cities and even oceans. It's not just about global warming it's also about discipline, organization and a less wasteful way of dealing with our recourses as well as most importantly caring more for our environment.
Btw as a side note: I'm from Germany and the environment is still a huge topic, even tough we are already trying so hard compared to other countries. It honestly often feels like we don't even make a change and seeing how the big countries that need to start making changes are acting just makes me sad.

Considering the USA accounts for 11% of the total global emissions, with China being responsible for 27% of the total, yet China's population is roughly 4.5x greater. It seems the media likes to portray China as the bad guys, but if the United States had that population their pollution would account for almost 50% of the total pollution.

Not true. Neither one of those factors are static. It’d actually allow people to live outside the cities. People would adopt and so would the real estate costs and commercial business structures of the cities and their peripheral communities. Just like it did in every other cities around the world. Especially given the abysmal state of progressively worse rush hour traffic, risks of accidents, rising costs of gas and insurance etc. Especially as our roads are falling apart and cost of registrations changing from time to time in order to cover traffic/highway apparatuses.
There’s a reason why Europeans love their tubes. A properly planned system can reduce costs, time, and effort for the passengers. I’d rather sit/sleep/learn in a train to work than actually drive, get stuck in traffic, possibly get into accident or get slowed down by one, or be worried about getting there on time, about the parking costs (sky high in cities). Not to mention, less wear and tear on my car, less insurance premium, less travel time etc.
Plus, Americans can use a little walking every day and cleaner air. Desperately.

    • @dylanhoward7668
      @dylanhoward7668 3 года назад +3

@@RojaJaneman American cities and European cities are not the same. American cities are much more sprawling, with bigger yards, bigger homes, wider streets. This makes public transportation useless, as there is not enough population density to support it, except for a few buses. Cars provide you unmached freedom to choose exactly where you want to go, at the time you want to go. And parking is free or very cheap in the majority of American cities. Public transport does not make sense here, as the vast majority of Americans are able to afford cars.

Rush hour traffics and sky high real estate costs in cities that force people to live at least an hour away from work and then travel for two hours, stuck in traffic? Heck people are leaving states to find remote jobs because of real estate costs and traffic. Washington DC, Honolulu, Atlanta, NY (even with public transportation available), LA etc. all have serious density issues. People literally waste an hour every day in my city. And there’s almost always an accident every day that makes it even worse. I’d LOVE a functional transportation system. I’d pay premium for it in fact just to be able to not stress. His allegation came after the United States had launched a probe into whether the virus came from a laboratory. According to Montagnier, the "presence of elements of HIV and germ of malaria in the genome of coronavirus is highly suspect and the characteristics of the virus could not have arisen naturally." However this was described as "a conspiracy vision that does not relate to the real science" by Jean-Francois Delfraissy, an immunologist and head of the scientific council that advises the French government on the COVID-19 pandemic. The C02 emissions from Norwegian petroleum platforms are the lowest in the world, like extremely low, compared with Saudi Arabia, Russia, USA or other oil producing nations. The companies operating in the Norwegian North Sea have invested in high tech advanced technologies to Cut Emissions since the start of the 90’s. They are transitioning/ expanding in to Renewable Energy production now, but to do that they need the revenue from the petroleum business. They also have something extremely cool that went into operation at the start of the 2000’s they store over 85% of the C02 emissions from the petroleum extraction under the sea bed of the North Sea in empty reservoir where there previously where oil or gas and as far as it has been possible to confirm it stays there. I've looked at data available at ourworldindata.org/co2-emissions and plotted emissions from the US, Germany, UK, and France, between 1970 and 2019 (I divided the US number by 10 in the figure such that all values would be in the same range). See pasteboard.co/K56FwiK.png
If the links breaks, of if you for some reason don't want to view it, here's my takeaway. The CO2 emissions by German, France, and UK peaked 1979; the US peaked 2007. German, France, and the UK have all decreased their emission by 37%, 42%, and 38%, respectively, since their peak; the US by 14%. Annualized that's around 1.3% reduction per year for all four countries. Since 2007 (when the US peaked), Germany has decreased emissions by 18%, UK by 33%, France by 20%, and US 14%.

@@someonejustsomeone1469, if we go back a few years, India and China had a similar economy. But China is able to invest in and manufacture renewables equipment much better than India right now. I understand there is more to this comparison, but India does have the capability to do much more.
I believe nearly 60% or so of Indians are not even aware of climate change. When this is the case, the government alone fighting this issue may not solve it. (Assuming the government is doing everything in it's power right now, which arguably isn't.)
On a broader note, pollution is one of the biggest killers in India. Solar and wind are already cheaper in India than coal, yet the dependence on coal is still way to strong in the country.

What is not coming though here is that the reverse vending machine for bottles scans the barcode of used empty bottles and collects 0,12$ for each 0,5 liter bottle and 0,35$ for each 1,5 liter bottles. This is money you get back for returning your bottles for recycling. You are charged 0,12$ or 0,35$ extra at checkout mandatory/automatically when you buy the bottle and get it back when you return it.(Can be returned at any reverse wending machine in the country regardless of where you bought the bottle) If you don’t return it you loose more money/ the bottle cost you more to purchase. Think of it like cashback for bottles, like for credit cards. It should cost more to pollute and if you then return for recycle you get the extra charge back. Good for the environment, nature, oceans and wildlife and good for your wallet as well. Incentive at it’s best.

No, the population doesn't "water down the emissions", it highlights that USA pollutes A LOT.
China has 5 times the population and twice the industries as the US. By simple calculations, USA will be polluting FIVE TIMES as much as China with those numbers.
Sure , china does add to a lot of pollution, but it's a developing country. Usa is the richest and the most developed country. Why does it pollute so much? If china got the numbers of US, it would only contribute to 5% of global emissions, and if India got them, it would be a mere 2%.
Compared to the current 15% , USA has a glaring problem.

America sucks in per capita emissions , and therefore sucks in controlling emissions. If China and India as developing countries performs better than you, then you've got a serious problem. It can reduce its emissions by atleast 3 times. The wasteful nature of their citizens is the problem.
Oh, and china produces 30% of its electricity by renewables, and India produces 40% of its energy via clean sources, even though their combined wealth is less than that of US. And guess how much US, the most developed country, AND the richest country, produces by clean sources? A mere 12%
