I truly love whenever someone discovers that First Burn isn’t burn. Almost everyone ends up liking this scorned woman version better. Also adds the dynamic that Eliza wasn’t clueless to the feelings for Angelica. Hamilton is a masterpiece so it’s hard to criticize any decisions, but would have loved for this to make it into final cut.
This was the first draft of the song "Burn" sung by Eliza in Act 2. It was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. First Burn" is the fifth promotional single of the Hamildrops collection. The song was released on April 30, 2018 and features five actress who had played Eliza Hamilton at notable productions of the musical: Arianna Afsar (original Chicago company), Julia Harriman (first and third national tour), Shoba Narayan (original second national tour company), Rachelle Ann Go (original West End company) and Lexi Lawson (Broadway).
I love this version of Burn. I understand why it was changed but I love it this way. I saw Arianna first in Chicago and I saw Rachelle in London as Eliza. Both were phenomenal.
I think this was the 1st version that LLM wrote for Eliza but changed it because he didn't think this in line with how Eliza would have reacted. Another excellent reaction. It would have been great to have seen your reaction to the Disney+ version of Hamilton.
I love First Burn, however I totally respect LLM’s decision in not making it into the final cut. As the song suggests, all of Hamilton’s letter to Eliza were burned - therefore the historians didn’t exactly know how Eliza reacted to Hamilton’s scandal. The final Burn plays a safer guess on how Eliza reacted; First Burn insinuates a lot of things about Eliza’s reaction that may or may not be historically accurate. Nonetheless, I love both versions🥺

They performed the show in front of the test audiences, with this song as Burn. The feedback they got was that the song was great, but the audiences didn't believe that this Eliza would get back with Hamilton three songs later. They said it wasn't realistic. So, Lin went back and rewrote Burn, taking out a lot of the anger and replacing it with a sadder meaning, and we get Burn is it is now. This was then dropped and called First Burn as it was the first version of Burn.
