2002 Honda Civic Si EP3 - POV test drive

  • Another day, another Civic Si, this time in the form of Vincent's EP3 hatchback. This 7th gen Si is notorious for ditching its predecessor's 8000rpm screaming VTEC motor, double wishbone front suspension, and hydraulic steering. It's also heavier, taller, and no quicker in a straight line. But do the specs on paper tell the whole story? Watch the full video to find out.
    Quicker driving begins at 7:29.
    I'm always on the lookout for more cars to review, so please reach out if you have something fun!

    in the UK the ep3 is the type r model that makes just over 200hp, and jdm version makes 220, shame the US version isnt the same for you guys

    I just got an ep3 I love it! Everything you said about the suspension, how the car acts over bumps, and wheels hopping...is exactly what I experienced driving it to the other day. Coming from a Ek with full suspension I definitely can tell the difference. This was a very informative video my dude thankyou!

    Great review, a bit harsh though. If you think of this car as fast economy car, its amazing.
    The practicality and fuel economy make it a much better daily driver than a 99'-00' Si.

    The difference between vtec and ivtec is variable timing control (VTC). Ivtec is a much more advanced technology and in proper configuration will deliver more power as well as a more balanced torque curve compared to traditional vtec setups. The difference being that the k20a3 is setup entirely for MPG, if I remember correctly from my RSX days; the ivtec in that motor is used primarily to create intake swirl at low RPM.
    I used to have a base rsx with the same k20a3, and it was such a dog, definitely my least favorite DOHC Honda motor. It sounds and feels asthmatic, theres no low end torque and it runs out of breathe in the top end. I have a 9thgen si now and im much happier with it.

    I think that for "i"VTEC, generally, the i just means it has cam phasing. For "ivtec" badged engines, whether the VTEC system is on one or both cams still varies for different model engines I think. :)

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  8 лет назад +1

      +TassieLorenzo You're right. The K20Z3 in the 8th gen Si, for example, has variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust cams so it feels similar to the old non-i VTEC motors. I didn't go too in-depth in this video, but for purposes of the EM1 vs EP3 comparison, the iVTEC in the EP3 can be considered milder since it lacks variable valve timing on the exhaust cam.

    Nice review; BTW the I VTEC means that it uses VTC (Variable Timing Chain). Also, the k20A2 (Acura RSX Type S) head has VTEC on both cams. I believe that this car is wonderful for a daily driver that you could autocross. IMO it is the best road car with respect for bang for buck. And 1/4 is 15.6.

  • @scottwaters4889
    @scottwaters4889 3 месяца назад

    Ah yes, the EP3, the car Honda didn't know what to do with. They knew they needed an SI, but didn't want it to outshine the RSX-S in the Us market. So we get: 4 lugs, 15" wheels, small brakes, 160hp 2.0l motor, tiny wang, OK Seats, 2 1/4" exhaust, and a long geared transmission.

  • @ANDRIY_H
    @ANDRIY_H 8 лет назад +3

    The difference in shifters apart from placement is rod vs cable. B and D series transmissions use rods. F.H.K.J series use cables. Which set up do you guys prefer?

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  8 лет назад +1

      Well I definitely prefer the 02, 07, and 15 Civic So shifters to my old 99 with B16A2. They feel lighter and more precise.

    " This 7th gen Si is notorious for ditching its predecessor's 8000rpm screaming VTEC motor, double wishbone front suspension, and hydraulic steering. " This US model is imported from England, and the English market had a 8000rpm K20 version (a Euro Type R, below the spec of a JDM Type R, that would have been perfected badged as an Si), you can only think that this despecced US EP3 Si was nothing more than a marketing decision by Honda to protect the RSX Type S...

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  8 лет назад +1

      +TassieLorenzo You're also right here! I have been neglecting to mention models outside of the USDM since most of my viewers are based here. But in general, Europe and Japan often get the more hardcore, less watered-down variants of performance cars. Especially hot hatches. It's a shame.

  • @a88888888a

    You need the jdm integra type r suspension and head with a K24 bottom end with an ecu & tune. I had a lightly modded ep3 k20head/K24, dyno at 280hp all motor with carbon fiber parts to lose weight... The base ep3 I always felt was lacking.

      +WhiteSlift I have mixed feelings about it. Dual exit definitely looks great and can sound better than single, but single usually makes a little more power if you're looking to squeeze out every hp you can get.

  • @JujutsuHeiho
    @JujutsuHeiho 8 лет назад +1

    This car has good ability to be something good. But stock it wasn't much because of the engine. The K20A3 in the base RSX is actually a better setup stock than the civic. The RSX doesn't have a Balance shaft in the oil pan. So that parasitic loss isn't there. And the RSX uses a intake manifold(albeit plastic) helps with low end torque. So you will the RSX actually has like 10lbs-ft of torque than the Civic. The Civic also has weaker tie rods. EP3 really sadden a lot of SI fans. But it has ability to be great though.

    Is the EP3 in the US the same as the EP3 in Europe? The EP3 in Europe comes with the Type-R spoiler, which this guy said he put on after buying it

  • @maximus9401
    @maximus9401 8 лет назад +2

    Base RSX is pretty the same as this car. Same engine, same chassis. The 05-06 Type S is the exciting one :P Closest thing to the DC5 Type R. They say that the DC5 RSX Type S got killed because the 8th gen Civic Si was pretty much better in every way. Better engine, better suspension, cheaper price, and unique interior (I still like the RSX interior better except for the rock hard seats). I'd love to see a comparison between the 8th gen Si and the RSX-S

    • @Zygrene

      Jujutsuheiho Having driven both cars, I can say the LSD in the 8th gen Si makes a world of difference. Much more confidence exiting corners. I prefer the RSX-S interior design though.

      Good review. Your first video I saw was of your 4 month ownership of the NA1, as I'm doing my research for that as my next vehicle. Saw this video and just had to watch as it hits me in that sentimental spot with my Ep3. After DDing it since brand new in 2003 and just clearing 270k this weekend I'm ready to move on. I love the car, just not wanting to put the money, elbow grease and time into it to restore it to its glory days and still just be an old civic. Having had 3 S2k, and still owning a CR, it's time to move up lol

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  8 лет назад

      guiuliani2 Wow, 270k miles in 12 years is impressive. Another testament to Honda reliability. Also, you're lucky to own a CR. If it's feasible to hold onto it AND get an NSX, that would be a dream combo right there.

I have the coupe model but I don't see an option for it. then I had to Google the civic hatchbacks which I thought they discontinued hatchback in the mid 90s due to my location. lol I'm going off topic but my question is, do you know which sunroof visor will fit on a 2002 civic coupe? the 3 door measurements or the 4 door measurements? I tried to Google the measurements but I can't find any results so it's making me a little salty lol

    You are shifting way to much, most of the corners you should have been in 3rd and 4th no reason to even see 2nd let alone 5th.
    Also yes the brakes might me weak but didn't help the car at all, you carried unnecessary weight into the corners by being in the wrong gear , also you were upsetting the suspension when in the wrong gear you should have used the redline and engine brake more often.

      Hontoni Arigato I used to own a 99 Si, same generation as your 2000. The B16A2 engine is much more exciting than the K20A3 in the 02-05. It's harder to find the 99-00 in good condition, but if you can find one, it will hold its value better and be more fun to drive. 02-05 is more comfortable and practical, but that's about it.
