  • Have you ever been shopping for guitars online and sorted by price? If you have recently, specifically with Taylor Guitars, you might've seen these two side by side: The new Taylor GT and the Taylor AD17. These guitars are Taylor's latest entry-level, American made, all solid wood guitars, and they just so happen to be priced the same; however, they're wildly different instruments. One of them is a smaller scale guitar with new C-Class bracing, while the other is a full sized round shoulder dreadnought with V-Class bracing. Which one is right for you? Take a look and a listen and let us know which you prefer!

I played both of these yesterday. There's a big difference in playability and sound. One plays like a small guitar (toy), and the other is full-size. I purchased the AD17 but might go back for the GT too. It's a fun guitar! I put D'Addario (Phosphor Bronze - Light strings (12)) on as soon as I got home; it changed the sound again. But - it plays so much easier. You can't beat the fretboard! I think you'll love either of these guitars.

Thank you! I wondered whether anyone would make a video featuring these two models head to head, and figured y'all were the most likely to. Already had a good idea what the AD17 sounded like, and it lives up to that precedent here. The GT is really impressive for a de facto parlor guitar; it doesn't /sound/ tiny.
So ... both lovely guitars, and either would be a fine addition to the family. But personally, I have limited space and will sit on my wallet for a few more months until I have the scratch for the 612ce 12-fret that I really want.

I used to record doubled, hard paned tracks with my old mid-80’s 412 and a first generation Baby Taylor. I love the result. This video made me wonder how this two would work on a similar situation. To me, different guitars has always been about colors on the sound pallet. Never about which one is “better”. That’s why we keep lusting for more! I really enjoy your videos! Thank you!

That little GT sounds great! Just started looking into getting a smaller bodied guitar. May already found it. Wow.
Cool little innovative guitar that I'm gonna have to get a hold of and take for a spin.
    Thanks for the video guys.

This video is still relevant for me. It isn't just about the 'price' being the same. What it really boils down to is only being able to buy ONE guitar that costs this much (of course the price has gone up since this was posted, haha). I have several inexpensive guitars and my only acoustic is an Epiphone PR-200, worth about $200. My guitars feel and sound cheap. Now being a father, with lots of responsibilities, buying a quality guitar in this price range is a very big splurge. Knowing all the differences, it's still about deciding if I want a comfortable, small guitar, to play on the couch, or a full-size workhorse. I am hoping to make it a family heirloom to pass down to my daughter. Oh well....I am still saving. 😀

Both sound good! Expected AD to kill the GT, but was surprised how well it sounded. Out of these two I would pick the AD and if needed a mini.

Great review ..as usual, thanks! Both these guitars are dream guitars to me and over my budget but I couldn't help looking at them. Anyway to me, they both sound great and I would be thrilled to own either but the larger GP AD17 is much deeper, richer and smoother sounding in each example...to my ear at least.

Last night (10/20) Bob Taylor said they would be doing the GT in different tone woods in 2022. I think I might try the GT, but I already have AD17 equivalent or better in standard Taylor lines (BE 717E).

Actually like the sound of the gt better. Surprised since it's the smaller body. Really like that enhanced mid range. Plus I like the look of that body shape. Anything from Martin that's about the same size? Maybe in the next comparison?

Lol, can't forget that outro. I appreciate the effort to cover the brand of that guitar to not give the idea they're a bad brand. I do wonder though what it was... my best guess is a Yamaha FG800.

I have the Gr urban ash and it’s a perfect couch/around the house guitar. I’ve also got a 214 for more strumming/louder out playing and would love to upgrade that to an all wood, was thinking the ad17 may fit the bill….any suggestions ? Your reviews are great by the way and thanks again!

Chris; Would you recommend one of these guitars over the other for a beginner? These are the two guitars I am considering for my first step-up guitar. Right now, I am playing the smaller version of the guitar that you guys destroyed at the end of the video (name withheld to protect the innocent, haha). I am concerned that I might be doing myself a disservice by buying the GT and not a "full size" guitar. I am more a fingerstyle light strummer type of player and want a guitar that would be gentle on my 62 year old fingers and hands.

There is actually such a thing as a "piano smashing competition" ... I remember being at an event years ago when this was on and my mother saw the programme and said "who'd want to smash a piano?". I actually thought that guitar was going to get smashed over the other guy's head then. What was actually wrong with that guitar?
