      As someone who has motion sickness I don't have any problems with the camera in this game 5 or stuff like that now playing resident evil zero or the old school resident evil games I hate the camera I am the opposite because I do not like fixed cameras less sickening to play for me then having more control over the camera like in the Arkham games or resident evil 4 or the remake it's not as bad as you're saying
      Hell I can't stand the camera for the classic God of war games the reason why is because there's sometimes especially in God of war 3 that there's so many enemies on the screen you can't tell what you're doing

    Yellow mode works in dmc1 cause of how short the levels are. In 3 onwards the levels get so long that it becomes a drag. Dmc1 Is all about speed like an arcade or sonic game

      For DMC4 onward I'd agree, but I don't see how that applies to DMC3. With only one or two exceptions (which do stand out as bad for that reason) the missions are designed to be really short, like in DMC1. Yellow Mode works well for DMC's 1&3 but wouldn't work for the future games.

      In vainilla DMC3, you know, the game you are FORCED to play on hard, there were no gold orbs, only yellow.
      I get DMC2 was critized for been too easy, but Capcom releasing that game in 2005 was nuts.

    The camera being zoomed in actually makes a lot of fights more fair, because DMC games have a mechanic where enemies won't start an attack animation unless they're on-camera (or in DMC3 some enemies can start some off-screen attacks if they have an audio cue that will telegraph it), so you don't get blindsided by cheap hits that you had no way of knowing were coming. It isn't as noticeable in 3 because of the semi-fixed angles as it is in 5 where you can actively "camera trick" in real time but it's more a quality of life thing. Pulling the camera back would make some of the cramped rooms easier to navigate during combat but it'd probably make the game unreasonably hard in other encounters.
    I'm a bit shocked that no mention of the sheer amount of time it takes to level the styles from 2 to 3 was made. Though using one style throughout may make it less obvious, that's one of my own gripes with the game, especially when so many key moves are locked behind style level 3.
    I'd think the concept of Style Switcher breaking the game would be because Quicksilver is ridiculous and its main weakness is that you have no Style actions if you equip it, being able to swap to Quicksilver at any moment is insane. For the main four styles I think that swapping between them does let you do some weird unintentional things but not so much game breaking since a lot of them just are more fun and Style Switcher is the easiest way to get people to be able to experiment with all the mechanics.
    Less need to buy items on normal specifically is fine, because the cost of most of the moves is actually fairly steep so that you won't get the full moveset until probably your Hard playthrough. For the first run I think a lot of people would RATHER get more moves than just health items and so by the time you start to really feel the need to buy items to clear a room it's when you've gotten enough red orbs to clear the shop. I frankly don't get why someone would rather the game push them to buy a Health Star over Rising Dragon.
    Some of the enemies are certainly bad but of the ones I think are actually horrible (Soul Eaters, Dullahans and the Fallen) there actually aren't very many mandatory encounters so unless we're talking a run of "kill every enemy in every room" their commonality seems overplayed here. Going off of memory I think there's about 2 or 3 mandatory Soul Eater rooms, 3 mandatory Dullahan rooms, and 2 mandatory Fallen encounters, with each having about 2 more rooms they appear in where you can run past them if you want, and they don't get thrown into most combat rooms as "additions" so for every other spot they can be treated just as platforming obstacles.
    If you have style switcher installed you also can swap to Gunslinger, turn away and Twosome Time the Soul Eaters, though my preferred method is when going to a mission where I know Soul Eaters will arrive to equip Spiral and use Trick Shot. In some of the mandatory encounters you even get a statue ahead of time so on repeat playthroughs you can play the mission as normal and just clear that one room with Gunslinger then switch back if you really want to.
    Bloodgoyles can be overwhelming but they aren't really actively annoying IMO, and Enigmas are only annoying on higher difficulties when they learn to Korean Backdash but even then they're entirely fair. All in all they aren't really FUN to fight but they also aren't something that makes you groan when entering a room.
    I have no strong feelings about the Damned Chessmen, I think of them more as enemies that test your mobility, and reaction times or rhythm similar to the Arachnes. You can't really combo them but they are engaging as fights when you think of them more as tests of your defense.

      The story of this game is so overrated. For its genre, yeah it’s good, and DMC 4/5’s story was nowhere near as good. But I wouldn’t call it “incredible”. Although the music definitely was.

    You know I agree that dmc 3 has some bad enemies but I'm surprised this doesn't bother you in Ninja Gaiden. When I think of "good action games that are let down by bad enemies", the first series that comes to mind is Ninja Gaiden. The ghostfish might be the worst enemy ever put into a game? And there's a lot of stinkers like the big zombies that just slowly move around completely ignoring your attacks until they eventually die from UT spam. Plus the boss fights are much worse in quality than dmc 3. In general all the fights with enemies that aren't medium sized humanoids kind of suck, and that's most of the game after you go underground.

      @@billyboleson2830 maybe but they're one of many bad enemies that appear in the 2nd half of the game, and you fight a ton of bosses that are trash too. Vergil and beowulf clear the entire ninja Gaiden boss lineup. If dmc 3 is only good when you're fighting the 7 hells, ninja Gaiden is only good when you're fighting the human enemies

      Ghost fish exist for easy essence and health. If you use the flails or chuks they are a non factor basically. They basically healing stations, kick and punch attacks with specific armlet’s can make quick work of zombies and all the fiends are at least decent except maybe purple laser fiends which are trash

    ok lets do a run down, he puts vergil IN THE THUMBNAIL, shows footage of the trip to the first vergil fight, says he's gonna rank all the bosses and skips vergil, mayo's been responding to quite a few comments, and NONE of those have been the numerous comments asking about vergil. At this point i can only imagine there's a full video on vergil coming or like, comparing dmc3 to dmc5 vergil or all the vergils or a video about rival fights or something because this is just too much

    I do agree with your checkpoint health thing.
    A big issue imo with the LAU Tomb Raider trilogy is that your encouraged to simply not heal as checkpoints are common and refill Lara's health. (and Legend suffers from a long section where you can't get any health packs in the England chapter, so intentionally killing Lara off at the next checkpoint for a refill is the best way to do it.)
    IMO, in an ideal world, all of these helper mechanics should be toggles, that way everyone benefits so players who need the extra health can turn it on while if you want to keep resource management, you can just turn it off.

    Just a heads up, you ARE getting bonus red orbs the higher your style meter. The higher your style, the more orbs fall out, and if you go higher still, the orbs get bigger, which is representative of more orbs.

      @@underthemayo ay fair enough! One more thing though, regarding the Chessmen, they are perfect training for a couple of techniques: royal guard, and the advanced jump canceling tech. To this day I think the only way to beat DMD Vergil in 3 is jump canceling. You know how you can jump off enemies, a technique called Enemy Step? You can do that after a hit connects. So you can equip Beowulf for example and do like 15 dive kicks in like 5 seconds it's crazy. Works for helmsplitter with Rebellion too!

    Of note, all modern editions are based on the "special edition". The special edition took the Normal mode from the original game and changed it to Hard mode, and took the Easy mode and made it the Normal mode. So if you play any modern release and select normal, you are not getting the original experience that I had with the game.
    I played DMC3 in Normal in the original release, which would be Hard now. It ruined me for other PS2 action games. Trying the original God of War on Normal immediately after DMC3 on its original Normal made God of War feel like a Fisher-Price game for babies, a feeling of mine that's never left for the franchise. I understand now that if I had played God of War on Hard mode I probably wouldn't have felt that way, but as it turned out, God of War eventually actually turned into a Fisher-Price game for babies.

      Nope, that's the US version only.
      The Japanese (and I think PAL versions?) have the same difficulties as Special Edition minus "Very Hard" which is US Hard.
      It was done so people couldn't return the game quickly rather than any sort of super well thought through design decision from what I hear.

      This is anachronistic. This is a solid 10 years *after* the practice of increasing difficulty for the purpose of rentals was commonly used. Rentals were far less common in the mid 2000's, and the used game market was the target of developers.
      For purchases, players COULDN'T "Return the game quickly". You couldn't return any opened new games to any major American retailer at the time for any reason other than defect in the United States. Wal Mart. Target. Toys R Us. Gamestop. Funcoland. None of them.

    I agree that the camera can be a problem, but it actually accounts for enemies being off-screen. Enemies can't begin an attack if they're completely off-screen, so camera manipulation can help manage encounters

    I have like 5 k hours in dmc 3 since it's all I had for like 3 years on my ps2. And I agree with everything said in this video. Besides the chess pieces, I love them. The board is my favourite area of the game besides the boss rush at the end. A bit sad that you didnt mention the goat, Vergil. The sole reason I love dmc.

      Imo Ninja Gaiden 2 did this perfectly. You get a single health recharge the first time you use a save point. It created a weird resource game where sometimes you will not use a save point because you have full health, and take the risk of going forward and getting through a couple battles and then backtracking to restore health and save. I loved it

      You can abuse taunts and dodges to fill up devil trigger endlessly and thus regain hp. Health restore at checkpoints just saves time

      That's the good stuff. Not everybody will figure out first time how to abuse said things to easily regain health.

    You know, while I like the simplicity of the style meter, it's true that a number for feedback would be handy.
    I looked around once because I was curious, and not one DMC game has a chart online which gives you an indication of how significant the difference of orb payout between a kill at D and SSS is.
    I might eventually have to make one myself honestly, cuz while it sorta becomes irrelevant after the initial 2 playthroughs when you've already unlocked everything, it'd still just be sorta curious to know

    i never had camera issues, in the sense of it being ruining my experience because i learned early on that enemies can't really attack you from off-screen. in the clip at 8:45 the white devil did his motion before he teleports to attack you, but because he went off screen just as he was doing it it made it seem as if he teleported from off-screen. i never had a enemy attack me from off screen so i never had to worry about camera all that much.
    also i love the chess pieces, and the chess board battle at the end is one of my favorites. trying to prioritize which enemy to kill and to dodge is amazing

      @@jurtheorc8117 i donno, i like the variety of the pieces, and how unlike most other enemies in the game your attacks don't interrupt their attacks, so you have to always be careful, but at the same time their attacks are slower so its a different type of challenge

    You certainly wouldn't be indifferent towards enigmas if you had played dmd. They go from an occasional nuisance to the single most bullshit enemy in the entire game due to the devil trigger buff.

    My favorite DMC, and an experience that taught me harsh lessons about my own skill.
    No "Soulslike" has ever made me step up my game like DMC3 and Xbox Ninja Gaiden....I was determined to laugh in Cerberus and Ayane's faces.

    At last someone who appreciates THE STATUES. Taking them out in Dmc5 was a big mistake in my opinion. These statues teach you HOW you're supposed to play the game and how devs see their game. There are even obligatory statues that you have to break (usually the easy ones) in order to advance further.

    Good news: you can speed run the chest boss.
    If I recall correctly, If you kill all the big enemies (ones that explode plus the ones that shoot lasers) of that boss than the rest of the pieces just destroy themselves.

      Kill the Damned King and rest explode you mean. The Damned laser ones only shoot lasers, guard the king by swapping him in case he gets in contact and resummon other damn goddamned chess pieces. Issue is that the Dayum King is not available to strike from get go and on DMD if you kill any two of the 'GODDAMNED Chessmen' then everyone DT's which drags the fight a lot which is why even DTE is a bad idea against em on DMD.

    Damn, the chess pieces on Mission 18 on DMD difficulty are horrible, to put it very lightly! I don't know if I got a different version of the game, but in my copy ALL the pieces get devil trigger after a minute, including the "damned" king. Enemies under DT basically get x6 hp, higher aggression, and immunity to launches. Resembles DE's spirit buff. And there's also that devil-triggered Arkham...

      @@GerardoFirestorm, in all the YT videos I watched, the pieces get DT only if you kill ~3 pieces. So you can wait for the king to activate and then focus him only. He will be normal. In my case though, he activates and everyone gets DT at the same time.
      Oh, and I also don’t have red/blue colors on the chess pieces.

    I used to be a DMC fan about 15 years ago, and I'm glad you touched on something that annoys me about the franchise in general: a lot of the common enemy types are just annoying and unenjoyable to fight. It's the reason I couldn't get back into the series upon trying recently.

      It's quite funny how, I feel like besides the first game, the one game that got enemy types right was the reboot because the combat of that game was made in cohesion with weapon prioritization without sacrificing style and fun.

      ​@@Aripuni1While I wouldn't say that, it does feel a little bit of untapped potential. With just the right amount of execution. Take God of War III for example, Onyx enemies breaks the pacing of some of the fights forcing you to use other weapons or combos other than your favorite. And you have like, tons of options in that game, perhaps it can be argued that yes, it interrupted your fun just now, but now you know why you need to use Nemean Cestus or use quick movements with Hermes Boots and control crowd with Helios Head. It just creates a different kind of funzone for you to discover. Same goes for DmC reboot, at least in later versions, it gives you incentives for using different weapons against different enemies. And while Devil Trigger is kinda ass in that game, there's better moment to moment action in regular combat.
      Unlike with Bayonetta when enemies blocking will interrupt your combos, applying strict rules to witch time, or wicked weaves. It's janky, and unwieldy.

Shame in a way because it was the ice breaker the game has, it was bad, because in the original release there was no lock on feature, and I don't need to say why that's bad when combined with color coded enemies.

    I streamed my first time with this game to a friend who's a series vet and they really didn't seem to understand my critique of the enemies. I wonder if the amount of times you said "I really like this game" would've made them not hate you for the dmc 5 video. I did like the whole chess board moment though. I found all the pieces together were a lot more fun to fight
    last thing is I think it's fine that health items are only worth buying in one mode because that's better than a lot of games where health items are never worth buying. A game mode where I don't have to worry about smart orb spending and just unlocking fun moves works for me. It's unfortunate that there's not an in-between mode that works for you

      Yeah I've learned through experience that style meter communities need a special kind of treatment when criticizing their games. And an inbetween would have been great. A real sweet spot.

    The camera was honestly never much of an issue for me because I’m the only target for them and i’m pretty sure every enemy has an audio cue to keep an ear out for. I’d recommend maybe playing with headphones if that’s the case.

    yup couldn't agree more. Love the combat, love the sickle guys and all their variations, love some of the bosses, love that the game goes basically "you either learn how to play or eat shit", fucking hate the rest of the enemie cast and the bloody palace from this game. DMC 4 does enemies attacking from outside your view much better, and the bloody palace is fun as hell, but sadly the campaing is all over the place, and i honestly prefer dmc 3 dante.

    One of my favorites DMC games. But you could have talked about Vergil. Also about progression, what do you get for beating the game and about story. Because, SPOILER ALERT, you can play as Vergil. And if that is not enough, you can play as Nelo Angelo Vergil by selecting specific costume for him, that gives him different moves and stuff, including the look. Also, you can play as DMC1 Dante if you unlock his costume. So yeah, you missed a good chunk of things to talk about.

    Once you get S rank all your animations become 5% faster or so, I believe this had to be datamined from the game back in 2016 and went 10+ years without anyone knowing. It's not mentioned in the manual, in strategy guides, in online walktroughs, nowhere.

      it just gets more boring and tedious. Boring and frustrating enemies make more appearances, level design starts going downhill with backtracking, bosses become more boring. The boss rush isn’t bad and vergil 3 is good but that’s it for the second half

    Despite being one of the greatest games ever made, DMC3 isn't perfect. Personally, I never put side by side OG God of War games and DMC3, because I think both series compliments each other very well, this is the inspiration for why God of War was so good. DMC had camera problems, God of War made a fix for it, no freedom to choose styles? Well God of War made a multi-ability system so you can keep your combo going seamlessly. And even then DMC combat has distinct features that makes it stand out on its own, weapon variety, some interesting boss fights. A combo and style system that allows you to access more moves, a better trigger system that ties in with your combos and style meter. And while DMC has a very black and white checkpoint system, God of War made a fix for this by allowing you to only refresh whatever resource you need in-between fights, boss or otherwise. The lack of freedom to choose styles was a problem so glaring it was fixed for later games, and the Switch version of DMC3 included it as a standard feature so no need for a community patch. It's very beautiful how two franchises can have so much cohesion and at the same time difference, thus becoming two of the most well known franchises for its genre today.
    While DMC at least bothered to stick with its roots despite differences in execution as per installment. It is such a shame that certain franchises are left in the dust, having forgotten its identity and what it was during its prime, for the sake of changes disguised as "innovation". Batman Arkham was an innovation to say the least, but it's a shame to see that something like God of War has been reduced to a very stiff lite-RPG metroidvania style over the shoulder hack n slash, instead of the very tight but gripping action it had for most of its games, being inspired by the Souls series, despite not understanding what makes Souls games and their combat appealing and trying to mix it up with OTS and regular hack n slash. While Koei Tecmo tries its best to remix anything From Software does, except make a mecha game, or a new Ninja Gaiden game that doesn't feel like ass or a copycat of No More Heroes.
    If retro-FPS made a comeback through newer design, I propose that old style hack n slash should also come back. Much like how Beat em up made a return via Streets of Rage 4, because DMC5 difficulty balancing is broken, God of War series has dementia, Bayonetta doesn't know what to do with itself, and Ninja Gaiden is MIA.

I used to just be alright with the new games, but I can no longer stomach the glaring problems it has, especially with the story. The only counters I've ever seen was, "the new games are fine, you're just looking at rose-tinted glasses", I don't think that's true anymore.

      @underthemayo I can understand if it is the number of units sold, but do you have any evidence that many people would say that gow is a better game than dmc?
      Unlike dmc, which had little advertising at a time when the game market was far smaller than it is today, god of war had Sony's dominant brand and marketing. Unlike dmc, god of war was able to get a foothold ahead of the pioneers.
      In fact, some series have seen an explosion in sales after switching from in-house publishing to Sony publishing.
      In the US, once you build a brand, it will continue to sell unless it fails badly. Other countries are the same, but the US is especially susceptible to nostalgia and branding.
      The same goes for popular sports games, pokemon, sonic series, etc.
      Also, the popularity of God of War, which is boring and shallow in terms of game mechanics, is spectacle, overwhelming graphics and story and violence. In other words, this series is similar to Mortal Kombat franchise.
      I think you have a deep psychological need to place your favored franchise, gow, above dmc.
      I say this because you don't respect other action games and are trying to give an advantage to your favorite action game.

    You trolled hard by not mentioning Vergil even once lol.
    I love this series, but it feels like an unspoken truth amongst the fanbase that the 3rd game has aged poorly. Out of the first four games, I honestly think DMC1 has aged the best, and it's still my second favourite game in the series.
    Will you be playing the reboot, too? It's a good game with its own unique mechanics to explore.

    Switch version DOES let you change styles on the fly, and is a good port. That said I understand completely not wanting to be forced to play with Switch hardware, and it's a shame this isn't in the PC version.

      Style Switcher mod existed years and years before they even got the idea for it to sell the switch port on it. The mod is also much more responsive than Switch port's version as well so don't worry about the PC players for 3SE.

    I also think the camera is a problem in this game but because of the exact opposite reason, like in so many games, the camera should be closer, so I can see what enemies near me are doing. In DMC5 the camera is closer most of the time and I love playing with Royal Guard, in DMC3 too far away so the style is useless.
    But a lot of games have that problem, some like Elex and The Witcher 3, they barely have combat but it's there, the camera even zooms out when you equip your melee weapon and in when you equip a ranged weapon (in the case of Elex, I use this because that's the moment I realized that), which is...the exact opposite what's needed. When in melee I have to know the exact movements of my enemy in front of me, when I aim it's not really important what my enemy does.
    And that the "free roaming" is somewhere in between a lot of the time doesn't even make sense, when I'm fencing I'm concentrated on my opponent, when I'm looking around my pupils change and I see more of the scenery, that should be common knowledge.

I said, in my comment on DMC2 video, that DMC3 is "restricted"...and I'm glad to see in your second or third playthrough, you install mod to style switch, because the director think: "players aren't ready to switch style and carry more then 2 guns at the same time"; in fact the HD version for Nintendo Switch has the Style switch.     So this is *intentionally* bad, right?
    Like not every part of this video is bad (I don't just mean his praises of the game) but seriously?
    You didn't go over all the bosses, didn't mention the soundtrack and didn't even acknowledge that the game *had* a story.

    Regarding the Camera, you are supposed to single out enemies by pushing them into a corner, because other enemies won’t attack off camera, they have to move in frame to start their attack.

      Yeah, I get that. But still. Not a full solution when enemies cover 50% of your visibilty, zoom around quickly, gang up on you, camera freaks out when close to walls, etc...

      dmc3 sadly doesn't have this camera system, enemies just attack from off screen which is from where the bad design from enemies get really frustrating. DMC4 and 5 do this much better (hence why dmc 5 is my fav in the franchise)

      @@speeddemon144p that's just false the fallen wont attack you off screen ever, it has similar rules to all other enemies it wont attack offscreen unless it started an attack animation onscreen before switching it offscreen.

      You can see old videos on things I think doom eternal needs (many of which were never added) and my video on the bad bugs it has (which were addressed by the company specifically because of that video.) But DE doesn't have 5% of the problems DMC3 does.

    -Okay serious talk, I was looking forward to this review because, it's pretty much the only one video who takes this game and shows the bad and the worst aspects from it. -Great idea about items management, it's similar to GOW Health and magic management.
    -overall Great review, I enjoyed every second of it, I hope will enjoy the last 2 games both DMC4 and the Reboot.

    Yeah the game has flaws no game is perfect but the positives of the game outweighs the negative so much that there's a reason why so many people hold DMC 3 as the pinnacle of the series.
    While I don't agree with the whole camera problem because it's more like realizing what enemies you're facing and just move accordingly (In other words get good) I do agree The enemy sucks ass I hate fighting the fallen It feels like no one playtested that enemy.
    Overall good video can't wait to see you do DMC 4

      I get the camera thing. But lots of these fights are in tight spaces with fast moving enemies. Trying to manage them and get one to the corner so I can manipulate the others' AI Is just a tedious way to play for me.

    I agree with pretty much all of this. great ideas for the game, good execution overall, terrible enemy design that almost ruins the game for me. though generally Id say Im more forgiving.

    The switch version adding style switcher and weapon switcher did alot to make the experience more enjoyable. The enemies in the game are some of the best but also the absolute worst of the series. Dmc3 isnr perfect but it is always a memorable and fun experience to come back to. The RE level design is somethin we all miss.

    I hate when games have enemies that take away some of the most fun stuff in the game. That's the problem with the chessmen imo. You can't juggle them, you cant launch them, and so you just feel like so many of your options are gone.
    A lot of character action games have this problem, I'd say Platinum Games have this the worst overall, but the Ninja Gaiden games are also really annoying, particularly the bosses which usually just feel like a different game from the regular enemies. Ninja Gaiden actually got me to hate bosses for many years, until the Souls games reminded me of how bosses can reinforce the normal gameplay rather than be so different from it

      Yeah, the combo aspect of this game is SO key to the fun. And you can't launch chessmen or do anything really to the fallen.

      Sure but the chessmen can still be Jump Cancelled upon so there's still a lot 3's Dante is capable of doing against em. The real issue is adjusting to their slight movements while JCing to keep up w/ em while avoiding their attacks, varying your own attacks w/ 2 melee + 2 guns and keeping up the pressure on em.
      Usually Plat allows most of the jobbers to be launched and juggled in their games esp for Bayonetta. As for NG, it's focus is different than launching and juggling enemies but still cool allowing about half of it's enemies to be launched which is more than this game (DMC3SE). NG Bosses are hit or miss though mostly miss for me (sorry).

      The character action game Soulstice from 2022 hardly has this problem. Got just over 20 different enemies and all of them can be put in a stunned state, or "crumpled", if i am using that term correctly, and be brought into the air and juggled.
      Even better in that the seven total different weapons are all viable, some stronger or less strong against different enemy types. Not just in terms of damage.
      Bosses are an exception to this, but i nonetheless enjoyed them a lot (except for the Weavers, late in the first half of the game).
      Good game with a lot to offer, despite issues like camera and the middle part dragging on a bit. Base gameplay feels really good, most bosses are good, story's solid.

      @@jurtheorc8117 I haven't played Soulstice but I've seen enough to know that the game is a very good first attempt from a relatively unknown western studio (Italian devs I think). I've even recommended people to check it out as well as I do think it's just good in general to support devs who're at least trying to make these kinda action games when they could've easily just chased after the fromsoft template and cash in.
      Aside from the gamefeel, lack of polish, huge wasted/empty open areas and questionable gravity aside Soulstice has a lot of potential going I feel but I can only say so much about it w/o actually playing the game myself and experiencing it.
      I do hope the game did well enough that there could be a sequel to it that further improves upon what they've got going there and smooth out it's rougher edges.

    It's just awesome how this game is still enjoyable for most people that played DMC5 first. Wish DMC4 was more like this actually, but it's unfinished anyway so
