Pulling is basically the elongation of the labia minora on the female private parts by girls and women, a tradition in central and southern parts of Uganda and Rwanda, which has become widely known as a Kiganda cultural coming of age for teenage girls.
However, some parents (perhaps belonging to cultures that do not pull) are peeved that their children are pulled in school; sometimes, under the guidance of a matron or senior lady.
We’ve got a question for you - what are your thoughts on mandatory pulling in primary schools today?

I appreciate the fact that my Mum sought my consent over this issue. I clearly told her no and she understood that it was my decision to make. Parents let the kids decide
I love that this video randomly pulled up on my feed. Some day I might be a father of a girl. Quite insightful. I lean towards personal choice with regards to pulling, piercings, circumcision, tattoos and all kinds of body modifications that predominantly affect the person to whom they are done to as opposed to their partners or parents.
Learning of this "pulling" today. Interesting topic. My take is it should not be mandatory and no girl should be bullied because they didnt do it.
I don't think it is okay to pressure kids into pulling, when you are 18 you can make that choice yourself. Culture doesn't justify things like that

Manuela same here. We were told at my primary school to do it it was painful. We formed groups of five to help each other we were btn ages 7-10 matron made sure she checked eachone to see progress the herbs were burning but with time it stopped paining what blows my mind is if a little girl didn't do it she would be threatened that they would pour down chicken feed then the chicken would poke her and enlongate them. So basically it was compulsory and we were told not to mention a thing to boys coz some girls talked alot. Women shouldn't be forced especially by boyfriends who aren't taking them no where even husbands love some one the way they are imagine if the woman said u better have a big ....
It's unfair. But if u are a child it's very easy to be forced so ur parent can be asked for consent. Otherwise just doing it to young girls makes even baganda new generation a bond there culture saying it doesn't respect them milleni. ...born kids want self respect and dignity not force like olden days where one was forced to marry at 13. Am from Zambia too and I feel the gals shud be given an opportunity to make a decision on their own. There is no scientific research that proves that labia minora pulling helps in child birth. My research has proved that it just deprive ladies of sexual arousal

I am from COngo ( Lubumbashi precisely), we practice the pulling because my grandmother was from Zambia and it got transmitted to other generations.

Ancestors where wise coz girls got married at an early age let's say 15yrs ,but now its a knew world age matters a lot coz we get married at 20plus so I suggest kids decide for themselves ,and elongation can be helped out by our men in bedroom why risk a child at that age

I will personally couple this labia elongation knowledge for my daughters with sex education, because based on my experience,I was confused as to why I had to do it. I did my own research and found that ,it is for BOTH partners to be pleased sexually. I don't think the practice should be banned I just think it should be modernised, no more of trying to make girls feel guilty for not pulling and no FORCE.

I learned about pulling from a house maid. I told my mum about what the maid had told me about and to be honest she was not surprised, I should ask her if she 'worked' with this older maid to give me this information. It was painful but it never made me uncomfortable. Partly because as you mentioned I was told it was meant to help me with child birth, so it felt like the natural thing to do. Now that I am a mother, if my daughter was born into that culture, at an older age I would give her the information and let her decides what she wants to do with it.

I was forced to start doing that at around 10yrs in primary boarding school by the matron. It was so painful trying to pee afterwards. I told my mum about it and she was so furious, talked to the matron and she immediately stopped.

I only found out about pulling at 21 when I dated a man from a different tribe, then I found out it's also done in my tribe but because I was never interested in cultural practises such as girls initiation, I never went through it. Pulling is not a thing in SA, even seeing a pulled FLOWER is rare & weird.

So this video played spontaneously as I do my house chores. Kemi is absolutely right, she seems well traveled and has interacted with different cultures. Culture is your identity and key to a successful society partly why Jews and Indians excel they are embedded and proud of their culture and don't copy to be like an English. This was very enlightening, as I've never heard of pulling. I think that maintaining cultural norms are fine only when it does not cause harm to others. With that being said, pulling sounds like a painful process and should be reconsidered. Also, are there legitimate benifits of pulling? Could it just be something that was thought to be beneficial but really isn't? If it isn't, it may simply be a misguided practice. Thank you ladies for sharing. Male Genital Mutilation generally falls somewhere between those classifications as Type 3 and Type 4. During fetal deveopment the Genital Tubercle (part that will determine if they become either female/male/intersex) is made of the exact same tissues, nerves, and structures.
It is wrong to strap ANYONE down and forcefully damage and permanantly alter their genitals against their will. If you're an adult and want to mutilate yourself, have at it!

I would think labial stretching would make it more uncomfarble for women: larger labia,harder to keep clean :hygiene and for sex:intercourse ; the large labia would get in the way .Also the one labia would make tight close feel uncomfortable:pinch

I have never discussed this with my mothers. However, at 11yrs old the senior woman teacher and matron made us do it. I mainly did it cos everyone else was doing it. Some students were more experienced so they would help out those of us who didn't know what to do. I tried to let someone else do it, but it was so uncomfortable, and i decided to do it myself. To make it easier they even put a herb, which would be so painful. Eventually, I gave up the whole process.

The practice is also done in zimbabwe but your auntiesare the ones that teach you. We are told it is tomake sex more pleasurable for your husband. I myself didn't do it, was not comfortable with it and i never did it

Yo, I (Zambian) heard that it is also meant for pleasure of the woman. Is this true? I personally tried when I was a child, but I abandoned it - pain won over fear of not getting married. LOL. Definitely should not be a coerced practise but one that you do as an adult over 16/18. I'm horrified that it is being mandated in schools in UG.

I don't understand how a long labia can possibly help a woman's pleasure?. I'm a British woman. A woman's sensitive area's at her private parts which cause the woman to have an orgasm is the Clitoris and the G-spot. Nothing to do with labia. I am merely saying what people have said, that I have seen online - some say they like it, both men and women, and others are appalled by it and see it as genital mutilation. There are varied views even aesthetically - there is no universal view. I don't really care about who finds it attractive or not - to each their own, but there is no one standard of what is beautiful.
My experience of pulling was not pleasant as a kid, it was painful and I stopped doing it. The women who find it pleasurable sexually that I saw online say that a lover pulling/tickling the labia can be part of stimulating the clitoris. Like I said - it's definitely not for me, but some women say it feels good. There is a lot of secrecy because those women with elongated labia do not say HOW it is pleasurable, or how that foreplay would work.

If the predominate culture predominates,then in cultures and countries where the majority of females are circumcised;then it should be mandatory :all females be circumcised .
