    I did this is a little boy in the backyard after seeing a survival expert do it on TV works very well but you're doing it the hard way the way I learned to do it is make a bowl and put lots of debris around the drill it caught fire in less than 5 minutes I could barely get the drill out of the way of the debris Catching Fire in the same way you put the drill in your little pile of debris just put the pile of debris around the drill I used bark like in a bowl shape you can build with you little sticks and stuff catches fire top and bottom picture's worth a thousand words in this case I'm trying to explain it PS total respect I learned a lot

    Never have seen a decent vid that lists and explains or prioritizes the suitability of various woods, for the constituent components for drill-sets and saw-sets.
    Best as I can tell, so far, yucca stalk is prolly the best spinle material ... no idea, tho, which materials are "next-best" ... I am supposing that the top piece can be made out of anything, so long as it has the proper shape and does not impart any appreciable friction ... I belive cottonwood makes best hearth ... Alternatives ?

  • @radikewl70
    @radikewl70 11 лет назад

    Great vid. Now just my opinion here but some people think bow drill is easy, from my experience, the only easy part is finding/making the 4 components needed to make the set. The rest is luck, practice and the will to keep trying.

  • @max465t
    @max465t 12 лет назад

    There is nothing easy about this. Don't over look that tinder bundle, very crucial.

    The hard part is foraging for the entire bow drill kit. anyone can do this with a peice of cedar bought at the store.
    Honestly, based on how little smoke I saw, the screeching sound, and how loose the spindle fit into the board, and how short his strokes were, I don't think fire was actually made here. I think they faked it.

    @seanmulhall I feel that. First time I made fire from friction took me a long time to figure out. I first heard that you can make fire from rubbing sticks together when I was about 5 yrs old. I tried right then with no success. Then I did an experiment in 6th grade with a dowel and drill which was smoking but unsuccessfull. I lost hope till I found out about the powder collecting notch. Long story short, I have been trying for a lifetime and at 27 I finally made fire by friction. It blew my mind

    You know that butane condenses to a liquid at temperatures < 40 F right. at that point you would be better served having a ferro rod and turning that $500k into char cloth.

    • @DragonsinGenesisPodcast

      And if you hold a butane lighter in your hand for a minute the heat from your body will allow you to use it in sub 40 degree temps.

Even the indians knew that they needed foot protection.

    I ALWAYS have three things on or near me. A fire kit, multitool, and water. The fire kit always has a BIC lighter, magnifying glass, char cloth, petroleum jelly coated cotton balls, and a magnesium fire starter. With only fire and water, you have a good chance of survival. A bow drill would be my last choice. Too much work.

    @cjoIIProductionz ,
    Can't help it, it's in my nature to question the man on the pedestal.
    Besides, the clip shows every mistake one can make...and it still supposedly worked? Come on...
    Also, the vid never actually shows a successful ember either. It just cuts straight to blowing the tinder nest into fire....he didn't get this to work. It's fake.

  • @RoyalDragonusa
    @RoyalDragonusa 14 лет назад

    @cjoIIProductionz
    Here is one that actually worked, and was not faked. Look close at the difference. Look at the form, the position, how deep he makes his stroke, ho tight his hand it to his shin. This is what it looks like when it's done right., same as when i use my bow drill set.
    Now, compared to the Cody Lundin
    Not me in the vid btw, just someone who can really do it.

    "Try going on a short nature walk" would imply having a little foresight. Most people understand the words "nature" and "hike" to mean they will be outdoors. Even more would realize "nature" and "walk" generally involve more natural surroundings including trees and animals. Still more would realize this "nature walk" generally means being away from such things as roads and people. Its not rocket science to think of the toliet paper BEFORE taking a dump.

Ok there is like a .00001% chance you would be drugged and wake up in the woods but come on buddy- for the 99.99999% of the time if you are going to be in the woods you can pick up a lighter before going.
