Fun Fact: The C4 Corvette was so dominant at the Sports Car Club of America's series known as the Showroom Class, that BMW and Porsche, who were running the E30 and the 944, had six to seven full time German engineers at the races to see why the Corvettes were so dominant, consistently finishing First thu Fourth!! The series was set up as a showroom class because all you had to do was add a roll cage for safety and then shave the tires for track grip and go race! The Goodyear Eagle GT tires(Gatorbacks) that came on the Corvette, BMW and Porsche were the one of the first really super sticky, almost R compound tires of the day, taken straight from Formula 1s "rain tires" . Excellent buy, I’ve always liked the C4 Corvette, I think it has the best tail lights and headlights. If you get some GM silicone weatherstrip lubricant and put it on all of the door gaskets and seals in that car it will make it nice and quiet again. The majority of all the little squeaks and rattles will go away. I was a GM tech back in the 80's I hated working on those but I loved the test drive. People didn't know or forgot the C4 was the first production car that could hold 1 G in the corners. It could not hold it very long because of the tires technologies at that time. I always felt the 350 TPI in the Corvette was under rated. On paper the 350 TPI where only a little more powerful then the 305 TPI in the Iroc. The cars were night a day. THe only bad thing about that car in the manual transmission and the dash.
@@cdbennett2332 What I meant about the manual transmission and the Dash was they failed even under warranty. 86 was a very bad year for dashes. Some of the Vets had their 3rd dash in under the 3 year/ 36,000 mile warranty. It was also one of the few stock cars that could break its gearbox at the track.
That Doug Nash 4 +3 was kind of cool . For those that don’t know it’s a 4 speed shift with a button on top of the shifter that would let u have 2nd 3rd and 4th gear in to an overdrive. Essentially a 7 speed. When in overdrive you could mash it to the floor and it would kick down
The hp wasn't very different between the L98 and LB9 (when using the same cam) but the L98 had a good bit more torque. They got within 15hp of eachother but the torque split between the best examples of those engins was 45lb/ft.
As a guy who is refurbishing a 1988 manual C4 coupe, I would say that this car was worth _every bit_ of $14.5k. People today just don't understand what a serious, well-engineered, world class sports car the C4 Corvette was. It was the C8 of its day, but that was 40 years ago and we had no internet back then. However, you can still look up period road tests in the Car&Driver archives, for example, and you just might be amazed at how good the C4 really is. They are incredible bargains hiding in plain sight today. A word of caution on a car like this one, though. Every original piece of rubber in it is now roughly 40 years old and needs to be replaced. That includes fuel lines, for example! Fire sucks... It also includes coolant lines, brake lines, suspension bushings, weather seals, etc.
I bought one of these cars out of a Quaker steak & lube a few years ago when they closed.. it was up on a lift in the restaurant and you could eat at the table under it! Always had a soft spot for them!
As I get older... Certain old cars like these start looking nicer and nicer. To see this amazing Corvette looking so pristine is amazing! That is one gorgeous machine. That stereo looks perfect in there.
I like the c4 body style. And I think that was the first modern Corvette that was lighter and redesigned, and I was told the 95 and 96 are the most desirable, and have the most power and a 6-speed manual. I also like the tilt front end.
Indeed. The C4 was a serious sports car where the earlier generation cars were more along with the muscle car tradition despite a few nods to thoroughbred ideas. In the early years the C4 comprehensively beat on track everything Europe and Japan could muster. It was the first production car to break 1G on the skid pad too, with street tires.
Congrats! What a clean ride!! I was a painter at a Chevy dealer in the early/mid 90s. Loved working on the C4s!! A set of fresh tires, and a C4 will get it done on a auto cross course!!
man thats a nice vette. definitely the way to buy. seems like a decent price too. i ran across the same dilemma when i bought my 08 mustang. i looked at a bunch of junk. ended up spending a little more and bought an original owner, 7500 mile 08 mustang gt. thought i over paid for it but man the prices have gone nuts since i purchased it in 2019.
Most people lump the C4 into the 'pig, stay away' category, but if you buy the right year models (ie from when the LT1 started, up to the LT4) they are a gem of a car to operate and service maybe bar a couple of things like Optisparks and leaky tops - but they are one time fixes, do it once and then it's done probably for the life of you owning the car. I reckon they look real tough looking at the front end with the pumped arches and sleek uncluttered bonnetline, especially with the Callaway models with the wider arches and fat 335 tank treads
The acting in the reenactment was Oscar-caliber. Amazing. That body style is looking better over time, I think. It does have a simplicity and clean-ness. And yeah, when that car came out it was a step change in performance.
Hey guys, I'm 62 years old. And I remember those cars very well when I was younger. IT'S worth every penny he paid for it. He stole that car. You'll not find a cleaner one.
@LEOhopeful There might be plenty of cars with twenty thousand miles or less, but how many 37 YR old corvette Have less than twenty thousand miles? Not many
Stole no, a good deal yes. Have to remember that generation corvette was not a performance car so to speak. So you’re paying 14k for a mint 27k mile car from the late 80s. That happens to be a corvette
That 4+3 trans was awesome. You could cruise in top gear button down then stomp it and it would drop to 2nd and shift all the way back up by itself automatically. Amazing for the 80's.
$14.5k is *strong* money for that car, but that age + that mileage + that condition is impossible to find outside of a collector car lot, and in that context it's pretty damn cheap.
Agreed, your paying for the cars condition. Plus with the prices of today's car where are you going to get something that cool for that price. Win win I say.
true, but pretty soon these are gonna go up in value after all the cheap ones are used up, and people realize what a impact this car actually has had on everything performance from cheverolet. It would have been the end if not for the c4. Love mine. wouldnt take 20 for it as it sits, and it sits pretty much as this one does with my own mods done to my taste which is all i care about.
@@funify11xAside from the historical significance of the C4, it's literally just an awesome car. People sleep on it because it "only" makes 245hp in this hp obsessed era. Except it does 0-60 in 5.5sec, has 340lb torque, weighs light, and has a 51/49 weight distribution. I've owned 400hp+ modern muscle cars but my C4 is easily the coolest car of the bunch. Exudes retro while being a good driving car, especially with the 6 speed manual You're right they'll go up in value as less and less will be available on the market while demand stays the same.
Those bolts came off pretty easy for a 37 year old Pennsylvania exhaust, that was last inspected in August of 92. Congrats on the purchase. 3 pedals, 4+3, red leather, best of friends; that's the awesome part.
This is cool. I've been looking for a later c4 or a c5. It's too bad the 96 C4 Grand Sport or any other with the lt4 get a premium because that's what I want. I'll keep looking

ZR1s are really fast and collectible. They are a bit more complex but there are lots of resources for them. I’ve driven two of them and they are very impressive. If you get the chance to drive one looking for a C4, do it!
My coworker has a c4 that has a very low amount of miles on it. He also purchased it from a widow a few years back for half of what your buddy paid! It handles great! My cousin had a C4 ZR1 back in the day and I remember it being very very fast when i was 13!
I really loved how clean it was with those wide tires and sick engine, but when I saw the dash with the cool looking gauges, I was like OMG I have to have one of those. The way that tachometer looks when you step on the gas would have looked space age and high tech back in 86. It looks that way to me now, I love it. That thing is sick. It's like a time capsule.

I’ve had my 1986 C4 for almost 30 years. The 383 it has now makes it. You should talk him into doing that. It sort of negates the 1986 smog detuning and makes it more competitive with today’s cars, and you can use the numbers matching block to do it. Late year alum heads mean roller block, one piece seal. With 27,000 miles, it’s clearance the block, change rotating assy, pick your cam AFR heads and hold on
As an 80's child I love it. What a time capsule. I'd almost feel bad modifying it past an exhaust and wheels and lowering bolts.... almost. Gotta blast some Motley Crue and Van Halen and Def Leppard in there!
My neighbor had a red on growing up always garage keep and absolutely beautiful. Red with black interior I wanted it so bad as a teenager!! I even tried to buy it from him when I bought his house.
Just sold my 1994 with 28K on it (consignment sale) for about the same price. Red with black interior and a 6spd. Owned the car for 25 years but got tired of driving it. I'm tall and the cabin was uncomfortable for any sort of long trip. Loved the way it looked though. Bought an Alfa Romeo Giulia QV and I'm loving driving again. Love the channel.

We did it for a few years, but I was 13 in 1984 and I remember being drawn to the new Vette that was there. It was a bronze color with a black leather interior. I absolutely remember thinking that the interior and dash looked like a spaceship
Loved this video. I bought mine for $375. I went through and cleaned it up though. I probably should have found a $14,000 one though 😂😂. I wish I could send you a picture. You were one of the dudes that inspired me and gave me confidence I could do it.
the reenactment was really the cherry on top of this sundae of an episode, so funny hahaha
That was a great video. This channel has exceeded my expectations. I hope y'all never stop doing this....
Dude stole that car! So sick. That lady rowing gears like a badass. Good for her!
I drove one of those new in 86, I was in the navy and my buddy's dad bought him the Vette. What a great car.
They have definitely aged well!
The early C4s with the rear round tail lamps are attractive. Thanks for sharing. Congratulations on this purchase
Car looks amazing. I love the diverse content you guys have. A fun surprise every Friday. This one makes me want a Corvette.
That ending was perfect. "Brenden" loved it.
Sweet ride 👍 love that old ford pick up
It's killer for sure!
I have an '85 Z51 4+3 with about 92xxx miles but with a faded paint and needs a clutch. I'm not looking forward to doing that but this video motivates me. I need to get that jack that you guys are using.
DASH IS HEIDIOUS, LOL.
The dash is cool. The 90+ are better.
I have one of their lifts that used to be a salad bar. Haha.
Wow, that's crazy!
Thank you for not putting Carona and I's 30 year old almost antique C4 down. It is a Corvette! Good show!
so excited to see c4s getting some love ! c4's are fkn awesome. I've had 3. currently own a 96 and a 01 z06. love me some vettes.
It makes sense to even overpay a little, as it's always more expensive than you think to put everything right on an average car.
Great reenactment! She deserves an Emmy 😂
Best car show on the internet ATM. keep up the good honest work. :)
Thanks so much!
I loved this!! I never would have noticed the reenactment if you hadn't actually told us there was one! 👍👍👍
Lol
Facts!
You'd be surprised, there are plenty of sub 20k mile cars out there. You don't see them, because they don't get driven
Wow, the difference with the detail work is amazing
That 4+3 trans was awesome. You could cruise in top gear button down then stomp it and it would drop to 2nd and shift all the way back up by itself automatically. Amazing for the 80's.
???
Be prepared for the 4+3 explosion
Clearly you don't understand what the 4+3 was, you could not cruise in fourth gear and have it downshift to
This channel is always an instant thumbs up from me. I don't even read the titles, juts open the video immediately and smash that like button.
Exudes retro while being a good driving car, especially with the 6 speed manual
You're right they'll go up in value as less and less will be available on the market while demand stays the same.
Think about the ZR1! They are super rad.
@@StayTunedTATony and crew... My heart is set on a C4 LT4 or a C5 Z06 or a C5 HTC. But I do like the C4 ZR1 and will add to the search. Keep on rocking fellas!
LS swap the late gen c4. That’s really the way to go.
ZR1s are really fast and collectible. They are a bit more complex but there are lots of resources for them. I’ve driven two of them and they are very impressive. If you get the chance to drive one looking for a C4, do it!
@@kylekloewer951 a bit more complex lol just a bit
Hands down the best down to earth, best personalities, best project selections, and straight up fun having dudes in the automotive RUclips world. Thanks, dudes!
I am so glad I watched this to the end!! That dramatic reinactmenet was the best!!!
I remember that truck from one of your old episodes. Wonderful project!!
Congrats on the c4, such a cool car
AWESOME I literally just bought a c4 with exactly 27,000 miles on it. And it's black I absolutely love it.
Aye Tony, when I was 21 I had a 1988 corvette. White with red interior, auto. The gauges had just been redone, and the car was MINT. Underrated car.
I have never been so happy that video content was lost. Gave me a good chuckle. Now get the editor to lower the volume of the music during the montages and the whole thing was golden!
As soon as I saw how nice the headlights went up and down…I was like dang 😊
That thing is awesome, I had a 87 C4 I drove as my daily driver for years, it was lot's of fun
Tasteful upgrades...wha what!! Beautiful C-4 and great to have friends like Tony and crew making some cool changes. Keep up the good work.
I originally thought is was too much money but after hearing the owners story and seeing the once over I think it’s worth every penny.
She must have been the coolest grandma ever
The reenactment was spot on... I feel like I didn't miss anything. Go Tony!
Love the channel.
so rad, great work guys, thats really what "friends" means
How about a bit of love for the lady who owned it? Wicked ride that's been beautifully maintained. She rules!
That’s a pristine example of a great car. I’m taken back to being 12 years old, and my distant cousin visiting from out of town…took me out in his gold 88 C4. What a thrill!
That interior makes it. Those cars were way ahead of their time.
Beautiful car! I have an 86 c4 as well, copper metallic with tan interior, just a hair over 46,000 miles on it. Lots of fun to drive!
Why was I kind of attracted to Brenden in the Reenactment scene ?
YOU ARE A GREAT FRIEND, TONY.
Henry, from N.E.PA.
I’m a man of a certain age (40-45) and my dream car remains a C4 ZR1. I had an abundance of Hot Wheels and Matchbox C4s that I still have. Excellent buy.
the truck pulling the trailer is very cool
I have an 89 C4 with the 6 speed. It's a really great roadtrip car. I can drive it 16-18 hours at a crack and not sore or particularly tired at all.
I just bought a 1989 C4 from original owner. Only 34,000 miles. Can't wait until spring time to drive it!!
The Silk Jacket hahah yeeesssss!!!! Official Corvette guy now... for life, lol.
Absolutely love this video, just everything is spot on. The passion and enthusiasm is just infectious 😅
My 15 year old son. Was given an 85 c4. Needed a bunch of work but it's coming around. Did a 0411 pcm swap and just rebuilt a 96 4l60e for it 👍. He loves it
I JUST two weeks ago picked up a ‘91 6sp Vette…this was really cool to watch. Congrats on the great buy and thanks for video.
Tony put his cleanest overall on. Nice
I have 1989 corvette convenable with 6200 miles on it. The wife wanted a spit and shine car so when I got this it had 2650 miles so she got basically a new car . We had it now for 5 years. It still smells brand new.
That ending was hilarious.
Barb paint correction was very enjoyable to watch.
This is the C4 of my dreams. But i think that will always be a dream because a manual corvette with these cool colors and this interior with the electric seats and all that stuff and the low mileage is so rare 😭
Thanks a lot Tony now i want a corvette 😃 that paint came out beautiful !
That reenactment was premium!! Well done
Wait, that lady got a manual trans C4 Vette for her 40th birthday?...now that's a badass legend of a woman right there!...
Tony, Y'all are great friends, you take care of each other! Nice group of Guys! Working on interior plastic is nerve racking, especially if someone else has been in there. Working on an older car interior plastic is a whole other ball game! I know it will be handled with outstanding care. Great job Guys!🏁🏁🏁🏁
