If I am given gifts, I appreciate the gesture but it is mostly things I cannot use or do not bring me joy. So then they go out of my house without the bat of an eyelid. I only keep things I love and use regularly. Always enjoy your videos and interesting contest. Kind greetings from Switzerland.
Even as a minimalist I still love giving and recieving gifts! I love the fact someone saw something and thought of me however I don't hold onto everything if it does not serve me anymore
Oh my! I'm loving this series of minimalism and introspective videos you are putting up (yes, your older videos too!). You helped me to move on and free from so many stuff (and more to come) that possessed me instead of being me who had the possession of the object, that has been a blessing! You also helped me to start a deeper conversation with myself, my relationship with my surroundings and how I cling to the things that will, eventually, go away. Pardon for the long comment, I guess I've been wanting to leave one since your "The Conversation" one and now it comes all out in a single and maybe a bit cheesy one. Thank you very much !
Thanks for the nice comment, Carlos! Glad to know that my videos have helped you so much on different levels and something you can relate to. Always appreciate comments like this. Will continue to create more!
I completely understand. When I receive gifts, then I have to give a gift back. Also it becomes less about appreciation and more about trying to get a more expensive gift. It really puts me off. Because that’s not what I want to base my relationships on
That's why I prefer receiving things to use for the day directly. Like a hangout, food and things like this. I even tell them what I want. Not usually pricy honestly.
Hahaha, I never had a problem letting go of gifts. Sometimes it is really hard for me to not directly throw it away while the giftgiver is still around.
This is the best minimalist videos about gifts I have seen....thank you for going into more detail. I especially liked the idea of thinking of gifts in terms of the categories. That was a new idea that really helps.
I had a gift closet for gifts I thought were not for me, but “too nice to donate.” I gave that up quick. Not only have I donated or regifted my gift closet, but now, to ensure I don’t need a gift closet, I get rid of gifts I know I won’t use, right away. It’s better than organizing room in my closet, silly really.
I am so glad that I discovered your channel today! I´ve been decluttering and "freeing" myself past recent years a lot and I have to tell that I couldn't have done the better thing. I swear. Also, to the topic of gifts .. I usually tell people that I do not want to receive anything, or, at the other hand, I tell them a few items that I truly need for them to pick some of them. If they still want to give me something, I would like it to be something I will truly use and something that will bring me pure joy. Not a dust catcher .. Also, when I do not want or need something anymore, I give it to my friends - be it unused beauty products, jewellery, TONS of clothes, accessories, bags, books or anything else. I am not wasting those items, I am also not making a huge waste either. I rather give them a new chance to live their life at someone else´s :-) Regards from Slovakia ^^~ I love watching/listening to your videos especially when I am decluttering, cleaning or making my own videos :-) You are truly inspirational and I just love your voice. It is somehow soothing.
This video was very good. I like these tips. I have let gifts become burdens before. It's hard to be honest and say "i don't like it" and feel like I am reject g the gift. But I have solved this by always giving out a short wishlist to friends and family before birthday and Christmas. It makes life easier! My friends and family are happy to get the list it takes stress out of the process of finding something for me. And I only receive things I truly need and want
This honestly got me thinking about the portrayal of sentimental items in Media: Cinderella fitting the glass slipper proves to the prince which girl he danced with. Anastasia's locket proves her royalty. The old trope of a sentimental causing someone with memory loss to remember. These sentimentalities and their value are instilled in us at a very young age. But let's be real: Who wants to marry someone who doesn't remember their face? Royalty or not? What kingdom would accept a piece of jewelry as proof of birthright? And what person has their memory jogged by an object? I have worked with many people in memory care and often if you start trying to force them to remember an object they will get very distraught because that's not how memory works. Everyday we have to reconsider the stories and memes we've taken for granted.
I had one provider she bought me a woman's T-shirt I appreciated the gift it wasn't my style I felt bad for giving it away and another gift i received was from a friend of mine I only used it once I finally had to give it away I'm donating it this friend she put money into it sometimes i feel bad about giving away the gifts i received but when i donate these items I know that others will get some enjoyment out them I'm a new subscriber
Love all your videos and so happy you are being brave and pursuing this full time. It's inspiring me to start my own online career. How did you get past the fear and make the leap? Keep us up to date on your journey!
Hi Aura! thanks for the kind and supportive words, appreciate it. No doubt it was scary, but i'm constantly think of what are the good things that can happen if I try. Will keep you guys updated soon!
you sure love to put that same pen in that same green box with the same string and the same crinkly paper hahahahaha so many of your videos have clips of you packaging up a single pen XD I really struggle getting rid of gifts because, I feel so so obliged to keep it so as not to hurt the other person's feelings. My mom and grandma especially are very much the type to ask, 'where's the thing I gave you', 'do you like the gift from last year', 'why are you getting rid of this'. Basically, making me feel bad for ever wanting to get rid of something, despite it being unnecessary. I really want to start asking for next to nothing, but my grandparents and parents always are obsessed with gift-giving and can't not get me things....
I love your minimalistic journey and even more the fact that you document for us. I have a question. What program do you use to digitize some of the gifts you have received?
Okay I'll say amazing video with advice not even the minimalist or matt d'avella channel has said. However you dont understand my girlfriend. I'll never be able to ask her or tell her i want to declutter. she will sincerely get mad so i dont know what to do😟. Like this giant ugly camouflage slow cooker taking up space in my cabinets

"Receiving gift is a nightmare for minimalist" 5555.... you're right
but gift might be something else than a stuff like a movie teather ticket but if you are full on minimalist in every aspect in life then oh shit
Even as a minimalist I still love giving and recieving gifts! I love the fact someone saw something and thought of me however I don't hold onto everything if it does not serve me anymore
Thanks for the comment Rachael!
It’s great to hear that from you.

i actually hate receiving gifts 😂

I feel you ! 😂
Oh this is simple. I declared to people only to give me cash. Any material gifts shall be thrown away. No one dares give me anything now, only $$$.

Glad that this can be helpful!

Giving should be selfless, not selfish.
Super well said.
Thanks Lucy!

do you consider figurine that we received as gift doesn't have as much value after sometime? cool video

Thanks for the comment. Usually i'll take a picture of the product using my phone. Or scanning it with a scanner if it's a letter
